► Tell us about you and your podcast
We are three hosts, I am Brad Connour and my partners in crime are Ken Brown and Nick Simpson.
Our podcast is called Rolling in the Geek, we are an actual play homebrew TTRPG podcast that currently runs two campaigns. Our weekly campaign that releases every friday is Riven the Shattered Continent which uses the Dungeons and dragons 5th edition ruleset, and our monthly which releases the last Monday of each month is Heroes : The New Breed which uses the Power Outage ruleset and we release voting options for the audience to help influence what happens each issue.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
We play D&D every Saturday in person with friends and family. We had talked a few times about how cool it would be to start a podcast but we never really pushed the thought. One day I (Brad) was having a terrible day at work and sent Ken and Nick a message about just making it happen and starting a podcast..because we all enjoy playing TTRPGs so adding an extra day of fun is gonna be good even if it doesn't go anywhere.
We made the decision to start 6/27/2019 and we released our first episode 10/11/2019. There was a ton of prep work we did and research for what gear we needed within our budgets.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We record every Friday because it's the only day that works for the three of us. We try and record at least two episodes at a time sometimes more if we have the time.
We release episodes every Friday and an extra one the last Monday of each month, we also release one shots for some of the holidays.
Nick has a background in radio and has spent ten years editing audio so he is our sound wizard, it doesn't take him long to edit an episode. That being said he puts a ton of detail into the episodes, background music, ambience, voice changes. He really puts his heart into it.
We spend $190 for podcast hosting/website and $14 for domain name yearly. We currently fund the podcast ourselves but hopefully one day maybe we won't have to lol.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
We have a Ko-fi and a patreon set up and we bring in a small bit of money each month, honestly we didn't start this to make money although it would be super cool to have that happen.
We don't have any sponsorship at the moment but that's definitely something we have looked into and it would be great to have happen.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We use discord to chat over the internet and the Craig bot to record as a backup, for our primary recording we use adobe audition on each of our own ends so Nick has all three audio files. When we are done we upload to Google drive so Nick can download them and begin working his sound magic.
We haven't had any guests on, we have talked about bringing in guests for one shots, but currently it hasn't worked out where we can.
As as prep goes, Ken plans ahead of time and has a ton of background story things happening and he find inspiration through different media such as music and art to plan out events in the story.I on the other hand have a loose idea if a beginning and end of the episode and that's about it. When Nick does a one shot he's about a medium between the two of us lol.
► How do you market your show?
We are on all major podcast platforms and we should be on all of them as far as we know lol. We have a twitter that we are very active on which is @rollinthegeek and we have a Facebook page that we post episodes to.
We mostly use social media for marketing though we do have a news letter that can be signed up for through our website and haven't paid for ads or anything.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Make connections! We have met so many amazing people since we started, artists, podcasters, content creators. Many that we call friends now and it's been such a wonderful experience because of them.
As far as resources...we use Google a ton for things but we don't have any official stuff we follow.
