► Tell us about you and your podcast
Mad Times with Madison is the break off podcast from the former Almost A True Crime Podcast. When my co-host decided to leave, I decided to take the show solo, rebrand, and give you all a crime podcast with no banter! I have listeners all over the world, getting thousands of downloads monthly, and consistently providing two episodes a week!
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
This was born from the phrase "hey have you ever heard about...". I love talking about weird stuff you see in the news, and of course love talking about the most infamous crimes. Back in 2019 it seemed natural to just make it into a podcast where me and my co host would tell each other about a crime that took place. That evolved into a love of research and giving cases and victims a voice, which really shines as a solo podcaster now.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I try to record my episodes ahead. I will try to get a month's worth of episodes recorded in one day, then every Monday I head to my local coffee shop and edit that week's episode before my real job! Research for cases greatly varies on the case, but I find somewhere around 4-8 hours for research, an hour to record, and two hours to edit! I am lucky enough to have enough financial supporters to fully fund all the costs associated with my glorified hobby!
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I am actually completely ad and sponsor free. I footed the bill for everything at the beginning and now I have just enough Patreon members that this venture is fully funded! And in return they get a bonus episode every week!
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I go down a rabbit hole with every case I do, spending hours perfecting my research and having it ready to present to all my listeners. I use Rode products to record the podcast (podmic and rodecaster pro), it makes it so easy. Just one machine for everything. Then I unload all the episodes from the memory card to my computer and edit it from there.
► How do you market your show?
The majority of my listeners come from Apple podcasts, but Youtube is a very sneaky tool to use. You would be surprised at how many people use Youtube for EVERYTHING. My podcast videos with just a static image get hundreds of views on Youtube.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Don't wait for the perfect time, name, theme, logo, anything. Just start doing it.
