► Tell us about you and your podcast
Spencer Wright is a 12 year Army veteran with experience in fabrication and mechanics. Spencer Parkinson is a graduate of Utah State University with a BS in business and marketing. Our podcast is about the emerging technologies of electric aviation. Our listeners are primarily people within the aerospace industry but we are branching out to the world so everyone can learn about the future of electric flight and how it will change the world for the better.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
Both Spencer and I are avid podcast listeners. We both enjoy the format of a podcast. We started recording our podcast in March of 2022. We decided that the best course of action would be to record 10 episodes before we released. Our first 10 episodes were released on April 15th of 2022. Our initial goal with the podcast was to showcase the talented people that are working in our industry of aerospace.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We release episodes every Wednesday with bonus content on Sundays. We are growing so fast that we will start releasing multiple times a week to keep our growing audience engaged. Fortunately, our company allows us the time to record during the day. They also funded the entire thing to include consultation fees, equipment, and travel. We spend on average 5 hours a week with our podcast. That includes recording, editing, social media engagement, and finding new guests to have on the show.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
We currently don't have any sponsor besides the company we work for. We are looking for the right kind of sponsors so we can work together to get the word out about what we are doing. We enjoy giving people a platform to talk about themselves and the awesome things they are accomplishing in what seems like an impossible task of making electric planes, eVTOLs, helicopters, and whatnot. We have made connections to people in the aerospace industry that we would've otherwise never met.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We use a Rodecaster Pro audio interface with dynamic microphones and headphones so guests feel like they are really a part of it. The studio is at Spencer Wright's house in his office. Our preparations for episodes includes doing background research on our guests. We also do a prerecording session to go over what topics we would like to talk about. We don't do live podcasts so we have the ability to edit if a guest says something that might be proprietary to their company. The majority of our podcasts are in person but we do have the ability to podcast over Zoom.
► How do you market your show?
Our podcast is hosted by Anchor.fm. We have a Facebook page, LinkedIn, Instagram, and company website that people can find us on. Anchor.fm gives us all of our analytics. Apple Podcast also provides us with demographics and analytics about what audience is listening. We use those to adjust our marketing so we can reach a wider target.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
My advice would be to find others that are successful at podcasting and engage with them about the lessons they have learned. I would also recommend recording 10 episodes before releasing. We live in a binge society now (Netflix, Prime Video. and other streaming services) so if you give an audience the ability to binge then most likely you will get them hooked on your show. I would also recommend that you invest in good audio equipment from the start. It really makes a difference.
