► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is Anna and I'm very new to being a podcast host. I got interested in True Crime Podcasts about two years ago, I became inthralled in learning about the psychology behind why killers do what they do. I remember the first true crime podcast I listened to was Criminal, the Angela Samota episode really began my fascination with true crime. I want Crimeable to be a very heavy research based show that goes into the psychology behind any type of crime. Getting people interested in unsolved cases as well as ways to stay safe is the ideal end goal.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started Crimeable because I always thought it'd be fun to have a podcast. True Crime is a very popular subject, with plenty of different podcasts submitted on Spotify, iTunes, etc. With that being said, how is Crimeable any different to the countless others? My main goal of Crimeable is getting people interested in psychology and the actual cases. I don't want to sugar coat it with comedy or lose respect for the victims and their families in telling their stories. I pride myself on culminating very reliable and interesting research for each episode so that listeners can really get all of the information. I would love to grow my listeners so that I can help educate people on these victims, often times the killer is the only one getting the attention, and most want that, so I try and focus on the victims and their families. I started this podcast about two months ago on a whim; I had bought a microphone for other purposes but thought I could also use it for podcasting. My first episode was the disappearance and murder of Dorothy Jane Scott. After getting the initial idea to make a podcast, signing up on Anchor, and creating cover art, it took about a week or so. I am a very determined (sometimes too determined) person, when I have an idea I really like acting on it as fast as I can.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Of right now, I am trying to be releasing episodes once every week, but I would like to get to the point where it is a larger episode and a smaller episode every week. Production can take anywhere between 5-10 hours, it really depends on what the case is and how much research I feel is needed to accurately relay the events. I am currently a student and research episodes whenever I have time, school is my number one priority, but I will spend time working on episodes during lunch, after classes, etc. I spend a decent amount of time on my podcast as a whole, again, research probably takes up the most time. I am not currently funding my podcast, but once I get a stable amount of listeners, I would like to add in more sponsorships and maybe a Patreon.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
Currently I am not making enough revenue for it to even be useable for myself, I got my first sponsorship from Anchor. I use Anchor to truly establish my podcast and upload episodes. Of right now, I have around 47 streams off of my Spotify Analytics while using my Anchor Sponsorship. I haven't found a solid way to find sponsors yet, as of now I'm really looking for assistance in that area of podcasting. Podcasting has benefited me in the way that I feel like I can be passionate about something, and the listeners understand that. It's like a community of people who can relate to the things you also "geek out" over.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
For editing my episodes I use Garage Band and Anchor, I will say with pride that I am by no means great at technology, these have both worked pretty well for me and add to the episodes having a pretty clear sound. I can also thank my mic for the sound quality. In preparation for each episode I create a script based off of the research I've obtained. This is sometimes 4 pages, and other times 10 pages, it really just depends on the case and what information I find necessary. I am about to have a guest in an episode I'm working on, and we think we'll use Zoom. He also has a podcasting mic, which will make it much easier for the sound quality to stay consistent.
► How do you market your show?
Listeners can find my show on Spotify, Anchor, iTunes, Google Podcasts, Castbox, Breaker, Overcast, Radio Public, and Pocket Casts. As well as my Instagram @crimeable.podcast and website @crimeableatruecrimepodcast.wordpress.com
Anchor provides me with Listener Acquisition; 55% Spotify, 11% Apple Podcasts, 9% Google Podcasts, 4% Anchor, and 21% Other
I find social media quite useful in finding other podcasters who have similar content as mine, although it hasn't been as helpful in growing my audience as I would've wished.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
I feel a bit hypocritical giving advice to new podcasters when in fact I am a new podcaster, but I would say that just remember that these things take time. It isn't very often a podcast will rocket to fame overnight. Stick with content you know you're confident about and can deliver well to listeners. Sources I've found helpful when researching include documentaries, government cites, court transcripts, and newspaper archives. Archives are especially helpful if the case isn't as recent.
