► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is DeShaun Williams, and I am a Certified Life Coach, Motivational Speaker, and Author. The Mindset Impact is my second podcast that I have ever hosted after I decided to end my very first podcast in June 2021. I am what I would describe a the product of the information that I provide each week for the listeners, because I have either already gone through it, and learned from it, or I am currently going through it, and working it out as I go forward. My listeners, I originally thought would be mostly males, but to my surprise the audience is 50% male, and 50% female, with majority of them being in the 23-27 years old range.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started podcasting in 2018, and have been rolling forward since that day in 2018, and the reason behind me podcasting is based on the reality, and belief that even though I am only in my mid 20's, I can still contribute what I have learned from the thing that we call life, in order to inspire others to keep going. Do I listen to a lot of podcasts? surprisingly I don't actually, because in order for me to listen to it, I have to be truly intrigued with the topic, however, there have been times when new podcast hosts have sent me their shows to get my honest opinion on them. My initial goal of podcasting was to just let out emotions that I had been holding on for so long, however the motivation of doing a podcast came after an attempted suicide in September 2018.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I often release an episode every week, unless we're on a brief break, and to be honest after recording, and putting everything together, it takes me about 30 minutes to put the episode together, but if we're counting the time of recording the episode as well, then it's about a hour, hour and a half.
Finding time to record the podcast while having a day job wasn't always hard, but it wasn't always easy either, so what I would, and still do pre-record episodes, that way I can just schedule them to come out in case something happens where I am not able to record at a later date.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I am open to having new sponsors however at this point the podcast does not have an official sponsor, so that means that everything is paid for out of my pocket which is no big deal, but we all know that the required equipment can get expensive at times. As for what I benefit from when it comes to podcasting, that would be to see, and hear how others have been able to change their lives based on the information, and motivation that comes from the podcast.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
Because my podcast is based on anchor.fm, I can use their software to record, and edit, however when I'm doing an interview, I will use zoom, and then extract the video from there, and use another software to rip the audio from the video, and then edit it from there. Each episode has very little preparation, it's most of the time whatever is on the mind at that time, and then it's recorded with ways to break it down, and steps to improve from it.
► How do you market your show?
Listeners normally find my show through the web search on google, and itunes with them both being tied for first place at 38%. When it comes to marketing the podcast, I have found out that the channels that are most useful for me are social media outlets, with facebook, and twitter being the top two, and then instagram, and snapchat tied at 3rd place.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Advice that I would share with aspiring and new podcasters is that it doesn't have to be this perfect, top-notch episode, be okay with the flaws, and the miscues, that shows that you're human, and when the audience catches it, which is highly unlikely most times, they will love your content even more. I would also say that if you're on the fence of creating a podcast, go ahead, and get off the fence, and make that podcast, because there's someone out there that needs to hear your story.
