► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is Sam, I am the host for my podcast Sounds Like SAM. I also do have alternating guest hosts as well. The most recurring guest hosts include fellow Fantasy Football enthusiasts Jason and Max.
My podcast is focused on Fantasy Football and football related topics. So we discuss everything from NFL news, Fantasy Football sleepers, Fantasy busts, Fantasy Football draft strategies and much more!
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started making podcasts because I don't always enjoy seeing my face in videos, so podcasting was a great and easy solution. And with sites like Anchor.fm making it so easy to start it was the best solution for me not only get my voice heard, but to still get to edit and create good content.
My initial goals of the podcast were to give people great Fantasy Football content they would be excited about listening to.
I started making podcasts about a year ago. I would do a very basic job, only record myself, and it was unscripted. Now, I have made it more streamlined and easier to listen to by scripting them, talking to guests on the show and just having alternative opinions to make the conversations more interesting.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I would do the podcasts at night when I first started and basically post immediately because the Anchor app made it really easy. I'd release one a week for about ten weeks. Then after the season was over I stopped, but got back into it once Covid 19 started again because I wanted to try to be more productive with my time. Recently, I've been making 2 a week.
I do fund the podcast myself. I use money I've made from previous jobs to buy equipment and some marketing. I try to market from free things like social media, but I've also used facebook ads which is cheap.
Overall, I've spent maybe $50 on equipment and marketing so far. So it's not too expensive.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I don't have sponsorship yet. I would love to have one, that is the main goal.
Podcasting has definitely helped my confidence and speaking ability. I'm very reserved, but hosting the podcast allows me to share my thoughts and work doing something I enjoy so that alone is great!
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I just use the basics, nothing fancy. Recently zoom has been a huge tool that lets me talk and record my conversations with others. Then I go on garageband and edit it.
To find guest interviews I've been asking people I know who I think would be interested in coming on and talking with me about football or their favorite team.
To prepare I send them a list of questions if I'm doing a fan interview or I give my cohost the topic so they can do research on who they want to talk about, then I schedule the podcast date usually a week later to give each of us time to get ready. Then afterwards I record my intro and ending separately.
► How do you market your show?
To market my show I post on all my social media sites, ask my cohosts to share it with their friends and family, as well as utilize email marketing from my blog website. My biggest audience comes from the apple podcast or anchor app which is about 30% each. I would say word of mouth is best, that is why I always try and get as many people to come on my show as possible, but I would also say it makes the episode much more fun as well.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
I would say the best advice I could share with an aspiring new podcaster is to be yourself on your podcast, prepare good work everytime, and don't be afraid to ask for help or recommendations from others.
The best resource for me has been just listening to other podcasts and seeing how successful ones run their shows. Not only does it inspire you, but it helps you recognize what you could do better.
