► Tell us about you and your podcast
This is a history podcast about stories leading up to the Chinese Revolutions.
It tells the stories about the fall of the Qing Dynasty, the founding of the Republic of China, its challenges and then its loss to the Chinese Communist Party and the founding of the Peoples Republic of China.
I'm not Chinese, I'm Canadian. But I have travelled in China multiple times and love its history.
Western audiences would benefit from better understanding China and its history. The stories Chinese tell themselves about their history and their relations with other countries is highly relevant.
So, listeners would include those interested in history, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and current affairs.
I think listeners of Mike Duncan's Revolutions podcast series will also appreciate the stories of this fascinating series of revolutions.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I love podcasts and listen to them almost every day. I was a huge fan of Mike Duncan's Revolutions podcast and was saddened when he ended his series after the Russian Revolution.
I thought it would be a shame to not have the story of the Chinese Revolution told. So I started this podcast to tell the stories about the fall of the Qing Dynasty, the beginning of the Republic of China and then the People's Republic of China.
I think western audiences would benefit from understanding China now. So many of the tensions with China mentioned in the news today can be better understood with an understanding of the Chinese Revolution and of Chinese history. It's especially important that we understand the stories that the Chinese teach themselves and their children.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I do have a day job and this is my passion project. I don't have children, so that does allow me some more time for reading up on the history, writing up the stories and then recording and editing. Right now, I'm releasing an episode per week and collaborating with others to tell the stories in an engaging way.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
This has been a passion project. I really enjoyed Mike Duncan's Revolutions series and was saddened when he retired from that series.
I want to carry it on by sharing the stories of the subsequent great revolution, the Chinese Revolution.
First I want to help people find the podcast and deliver interesting stories about Chinese history. I have begun exploring affiliate marketing campaigns.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I read a variety of books for content, then I write the story, edit it into episodes and use Audacity to record and edit. When I interview guests, I use Zoom and I like editing out filler words to make a better listening experience.
► How do you market your show?
I'm a new podcaster and still learning about marketing. Right now, I'm trying social media, including Facebook and Facebook groups, as well as Instagram, Reddit and more.
I also send out some emails and am hoping to bring more value to other podcasters with Chinese history content for their podcasts if that helps.
I have begun interviewing guests, especially those with their own podcasts, to help spread this podcast to new audiences.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
I found it helpful talking with other podcasters before launching. I learned about Audacity that way and find it to be a very helpful recording and editing system.
► Where can we learn more about you & your podcasts?
