► Tell us about you and your podcast
How Do You Drew is a Drew Barrymore podcast from Anne & Ashley, the fans and friends behind The Drewseum! We met online as teenagers in the 90s on a Drew Barrymore fan message board. Now we’re using our 25 years of Drewbie experience to discuss both Drew’s personal life and professional career, covering a wide variety of episode topics. Also on every episode we update you on What’s New with Drew and toss in fun segments like our selected Drewism of the Week and This Week in Drew Barrymore History. Our listeners tend to be Drew fans both longtime and new, but we also appeal to those with 80s/90s nostalgia and film historians.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
With our physical archives and encyclopedic knowledge on all things Drew Barrymore, plus having hosted a fansite dedicated to her since 2006, a podcast seemed the natural next step. We also have a longtime friendship that makes listening an enjoyable and fun experience of listening in on besties chatting. We got serious about creating the podcast in spring 2022 and debuted our premiere episode in August that same year.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We are an independent podcast, 100% researched, produced, edited, and marketed by just the two of us. Time can be a struggle as we both have full time jobs, but we have such a passion for the podcast that we always manage to squeeze it in. Currently we are sponsored by a company that hosts our website in exchange for advertising for them.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
As mentioned above, we are able to have our website hosted in exchange for advertising for the company. We would love to obtain new sponsorship opportunities from companies that are well suited to match us. However we mainly do this because we enjoy it so much and love spreading the sunshine that is Drew Barrymore.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We live on separate sides of the country, so we conduct all recordings (including guests) via Zoom. We reach out to potential guests if they have worked with Drew Barrymore or have done something relevant to a topic we are preparing to discuss.
Each episode's preparation entails research from our physical archive of Drew Barrymore materials and compiling notes and comments in a shared Google document.
► How do you market your show?
Our website thedrewseum.com has been online since 2006, so we have a built-in following thanks to that. We mainly market via Instagram (although we also use other socials like TikTok and Threads). We try to network with other podcasters who focus on similar topics.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Definitely don't let perfection get in the way of just starting. Just start! As long as you have a microphone and some free time, you can get it going and figure out the rest along the way. There are lots of free hosting options out there to get your podcast on the air. We also recommend having a website and a social media presence.
