559. Chop wood, carry water. | The cadence I use to clear my mind and get out of my slump.
ABOUT THIS EPISODE
In 2002, right after Shawn Green signed a $14 million Major League Baseball contract he found himself in the worst slump of his professional career.
It was so bad in fact, that the fans were calling for his head and the rumor mill began to churn that Green should be benched, sent down to the minors, or traded all together-and that was the outside voices. Imagine the voices that were banging around inside of Green's mind.
With every at-bat, the baseball seemed to get smaller and smaller.
How did Green get out of his slump? The same way you'll get out of yours.
Today's episode will show you how to clear your mind and get out of your slump
The inspiration for today's episode comes from, Stillness is the Key," by Ryan Holiday. Check out Ryan's work and grab a copy of his book in the links in the show notes.

00:00:00.049 --> 00:00:01.548
This is the sales life.
00:00:01.548 --> 00:00:06.049
I'm your host marsh BICE, and the sales life is just not a sales podcast.
00:00:06.049 --> 00:00:08.569
Although we do talk about sales from time to time.
00:00:08.989 --> 00:00:10.218
It's a selling podcast.
00:00:10.499 --> 00:00:11.038
, think about it.
00:00:11.069 --> 00:00:19.480
Everything that you've achieved in life is because you sold your way there and everything that you haven't accomplished in life is because you settled and you stopped selling.
00:00:20.129 --> 00:00:28.094
Selling requires five skills, communication, curiosity, creativity, continuous learning, and also productive confrontation.
00:00:28.173 --> 00:00:32.164
So that way, no matter what comes up in your life, you'll never settle.
00:00:32.375 --> 00:00:33.244
And you keep selling.
00:00:33.823 --> 00:00:37.304
If this is your first time here subscribed to it, you'll get a ton of value.
00:00:37.514 --> 00:00:43.603
And if you've been here a time or 10 share it, don't keep the sales life secret, stick around to the end of the episode.
00:00:43.603 --> 00:00:49.124
That way you can learn how to connect to me one on one, and also where I hang out on all the socials.
00:00:49.274 --> 00:00:51.524
I got a great episode for you, so let's get it.
00:00:52.534 --> 00:00:54.034
Today, , we're going to work out of the book.
00:00:54.125 --> 00:01:02.414
Stillness is the key by Ryan holiday there's a chapter that he talks about major league baseball players, Sean Green.
00:01:03.075 --> 00:01:05.114
And this was in 2002.
00:01:05.114 --> 00:01:08.594
And green was having the worst slump of his professional career.
00:01:10.349 --> 00:01:13.829
And Greene had recently signed a $14 million a year contract.
00:01:13.879 --> 00:01:18.129
So obviously the rumor mill just churned up, , is green going to be traded?
00:01:18.129 --> 00:01:19.120
Is he going to be benched?
00:01:19.120 --> 00:01:20.909
Is he going to be sent down to the minors?
00:01:21.415 --> 00:01:24.685
And that's the outside voices let alone be inside demons.
00:01:24.685 --> 00:01:31.155
The great, big voices inside of green, where it was reminding him that maybe you've lost your touch.
00:01:31.665 --> 00:01:32.954
You're never going to get out of this.
00:01:34.915 --> 00:01:39.525
In baseball, you have 400 milliseconds to connect your bat with the ball.
00:01:41.174 --> 00:01:52.094
And it seemed like every time green was at bat, the ball kept getting smaller and smaller and just felt like there was no way out of this slump.
00:01:54.301 --> 00:01:58.051
So what was, Green's answer it.
00:01:58.051 --> 00:01:59.490
Wasn't changing his swing.
00:01:59.490 --> 00:02:01.891
It wasn't, uh, changing his stance.
00:02:01.921 --> 00:02:06.450
When any of that, it was the art of self forgiveness.
00:02:09.256 --> 00:02:12.975
And self forgetfulness is the freedom from the rumination.
00:02:13.406 --> 00:02:15.376
The rumination is the negative feedback loop.
00:02:15.376 --> 00:02:16.515
You play over and over again.
00:02:16.846 --> 00:02:18.855
It's freeing yourself of the worry.
00:02:19.366 --> 00:02:22.756
It's not thinking of your advantages nor your disadvantages.
00:02:24.015 --> 00:02:25.366
As a matter of fact, it's not thinking at all.
00:02:27.915 --> 00:02:30.586
And what green had to do is get rid of the toxic thinking.
00:02:30.885 --> 00:02:35.716
See the toxic thinking is this silent gas it's odorless.
00:02:35.776 --> 00:02:38.105
It's like carbon oxide, you can't see it.
00:02:38.556 --> 00:02:39.425
You can't smell it.
00:02:40.806 --> 00:02:45.786
And many times with this toxic thinking, it seems like it's just very, very small.
00:02:45.786 --> 00:02:56.876
It's just a little bit of gas . We keep pumping more and more gas into our minds and it overcrowds us and green was just trapped in this.
00:02:56.996 --> 00:03:07.165
So the first thing he had to do, man, he had to rid himself up the toxic thinking and also rid himself of the responsibility of having to live up to this $14 million a year contract.
00:03:07.466 --> 00:03:10.665
Everybody was reminding him of that, including himself.
00:03:11.205 --> 00:03:12.645
Maybe I'm overvalued.
00:03:12.945 --> 00:03:14.145
Maybe I'm just a bust.
00:03:15.436 --> 00:03:23.716
He had to push all of that out of his mind and let his training take over . Holiday writes, it started in the batting cage.
00:03:24.165 --> 00:03:33.567
Then the batting tee and green slowly and patiently cleared his mind with each swing of the bat.
00:03:34.106 --> 00:03:38.933
He focused on his mechanics many times we're not playing where our feet are.
00:03:39.593 --> 00:03:43.734
We're playing where our feet were, which was in the past.
00:03:44.334 --> 00:03:47.033
So we're not even playing present basketball.
00:03:47.033 --> 00:03:49.223
Coaches tell you that all the time play where your feet are.
00:03:49.584 --> 00:03:51.623
Don't think about the play that's already gone by.
00:03:51.924 --> 00:03:54.454
And don't think about the play that could be coming later on.
00:03:54.813 --> 00:03:56.283
You play where your feet are right now.
00:03:57.424 --> 00:03:58.443
And that's not what we do.
00:03:59.554 --> 00:04:06.373
We let our past play our present and our future play, where you feed are.
00:04:07.054 --> 00:04:12.183
Green had to clear his mind and thinking about the fans and what they'd say, what they think and all the sports reporters.
00:04:12.813 --> 00:04:14.213
As a matter of fact, he couldn't think at all.
00:04:16.048 --> 00:04:19.658
In his mind, he had a cadence, chop wood, carry water.
00:04:19.838 --> 00:04:20.499
Do the work.
00:04:20.858 --> 00:04:28.718
Don't think hit his first at bat two pitches, two strikes.
00:04:29.439 --> 00:04:29.889
Of course.
00:04:29.889 --> 00:04:31.149
What does your mind do now?
00:04:32.379 --> 00:04:33.908
It reminds you up.
00:04:33.939 --> 00:04:34.778
Here we go again.
00:04:36.528 --> 00:04:38.389
Green emptied his mind.
00:04:38.418 --> 00:04:39.468
He didn't clear as mine.
00:04:39.499 --> 00:04:43.202
He emptied his mind and got to work.
00:04:44.288 --> 00:04:55.038
The next pitch connected the second inning, he connected again, drove three runs in fourth and fifth inning home runs green went , five for five.
00:04:55.668 --> 00:04:58.233
But then this is where your mind swings in a whole different direction.
00:04:59.713 --> 00:05:08.024
Now this is where you start feeling that you're Bulletproof, you feel, oh, I'm rid of this as if you're going to go undefeated for the rest of your life.
00:05:08.504 --> 00:05:15.274
And I think the problem with that is, when we play too full of ourselves or too doubtful of ourselves.
00:05:15.514 --> 00:05:18.593
This is what leads to the slumps so you've got an empty your mind.
00:05:20.764 --> 00:05:33.843
Good.or bad play, empty minded, not absent-minded meaning no matter how good your situation is or how desperate your situation may seem empty it out.
00:05:34.824 --> 00:05:38.574
Focus on your mechanics, chop wood, carry water.
00:05:38.694 --> 00:05:39.384
Do the work.
00:05:39.954 --> 00:05:40.613
Don't think.
00:05:42.605 --> 00:05:47.206
Many times we play absent-minded and absentminded is where you go on autopilot.
00:05:47.846 --> 00:05:50.735
You gotta be empty minded.
00:05:52.026 --> 00:05:52.596
Empty it out.
00:05:54.266 --> 00:05:55.646
. And that's my challenge to you today.
00:05:55.966 --> 00:06:06.055
If you're having a great month, if you have a bad day, if you're having a terrible month, if it's been a terrible quarter, play empty minded play, where you feet are.
00:06:06.946 --> 00:06:18.576
Focus on your mechanics, chop wood carry water, because I think a large reason why we're in these slumps is because we're playing full minded.
00:06:19.305 --> 00:06:25.966
Instead of carrying the lessons over, we carry the losses over and they just keep compounding.
00:06:27.089 --> 00:06:34.930
Every time a customer tells us no, every time a similar situation of rejection comes up, we cluster it together saying.
00:06:35.795 --> 00:06:37.834
Here we go, there was no coming out of this.
00:06:38.074 --> 00:06:38.824
Oh my gosh.
00:06:39.035 --> 00:06:43.865
And this is where we feel like the victim and we don't want to be that way.
00:06:44.165 --> 00:06:45.694
It's just, that's what we do.
00:06:46.425 --> 00:07:03.415
We try to clump these things together because in an effort to, to try to deal with some sort of reasoning with this, we have a tendency to say, it's not our fault I'm just a victim here.
00:07:03.595 --> 00:07:08.689
It was out of my control, whether it was or wasn't in your control.
00:07:08.718 --> 00:07:09.588
Don't even think about it.
00:07:11.298 --> 00:07:12.019
Empty your mind.
00:07:12.319 --> 00:07:13.939
Chop wood, carry water.
00:07:13.999 --> 00:07:15.249
Don't think hit.
00:07:15.829 --> 00:07:17.209
Focus on your mechanics.
00:07:19.218 --> 00:07:22.218
And this is where you also have to pay attention to your rate of speed.
00:07:22.759 --> 00:07:24.608
I know many times when I get on a slick spot.
00:07:25.168 --> 00:07:31.348
I tend to speed up my presentation because I want to hurry up and get the loss over with.
00:07:32.249 --> 00:07:38.098
And it's in these situations that I have to remind myself chop wood, carry water.
00:07:38.548 --> 00:07:40.499
See, when you say that right there, that's a cadence.
00:07:40.499 --> 00:07:41.668
You don't say chop wood carry water.
00:07:41.968 --> 00:07:45.928
You say chop wood, carry water, chop wood, carry water.
00:07:47.699 --> 00:07:50.639
That's the cadence that your offering needs to be also.
00:07:51.119 --> 00:07:53.038
So you have to pay attention to your rate of speed.
00:07:54.689 --> 00:07:57.298
And also this is really important.
00:07:57.389 --> 00:07:59.158
Pay attention to what you say out loud.
00:08:00.329 --> 00:08:04.259
Stop saying stupid stuff out loud.
00:08:06.358 --> 00:08:07.468
You think it's no big deal?
00:08:07.499 --> 00:08:07.949
It is.
00:08:07.978 --> 00:08:08.668
It's huge.
00:08:09.449 --> 00:08:10.918
Even if you think it don't say it.
00:08:12.238 --> 00:08:20.069
Chop wood carry water because empty hands are due to full minds.
00:08:22.505 --> 00:08:24.036
