D'Ontae Sylvertooth (an avid podcast listener, lawyer by day and podcaster by all the other free time that I have). My podcast is Peeps' Creek: the Café. The premise behind my podcast is that libations (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) bring people together, and once we are at the table, we can discuss all types of issues. Drinking initiates the organic conversation. So we discuss various topics - love, dating, politics, crime, and etc. My listeners are a cross-sect of individuals (because the Café is hopping). But mainly people who like to drink, attend a happy hour, and just discuss great topics.

I found myself always talking back to the podcasts that I listened to and thought there was a void of podcasters who look like and sound like me. Because my friends and I would go out for happy hour and engage in great conversations, I figured, why not bring that to the table for others to hear. I began podcasting in December 2018. It took me 3 months to research, buy equipment, and come up with a theme. Then, I set in my living room, invited folks over, and started recording. I have been going ever since.

Self-funding, although, I would love to get some donations (some I have received) or sponsorships. But, it is a passion of mine. We are on break until February 2020. I normally released every two weeks, but now I am moving to weekly. It normally takes about 1.5 hours to record, maybe 2-3 hours of editing the audio and video (for youtube). I find the time because I am passionate about having a platform to have voices like mine heard. I spend approximately $2000 (maybe more sometimes) a year (all self-funded).

I am currently looking for sponsorships. Podcasting allows me to break through difficult topics in a non-adversarial way -- mainly because we are drinking (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) beverages, which creates the buffer. It makes us similar for that moment. So when our opinions diverge, we can do so amicably. It gives me the satisfaction of knowing that people are listening / watching who may have their own opinions on the topic we are discussing for that moment. I would love to be able to make some money from this passion.

I use Audio-Technica microphones, a sony a6400 camera and iPhone 12 for recording, restream video service for capturing remote guests/cohosts. I use garageband to capture the audio on separate tracks and then edit using Ferrite Studio. I normally have 2 regular co-hosts, but find other guests through social media, my friend network, or reaching out to folks via email.

Word of mouth, Ads on Facebook, Instagram, and Google, coming across the Video on Youtube. I am in the process of creating a monthly email newsletter. Definitely using tags on Instagram and etc.

You need to know why you are doing it. Your message, your theme, your delivery just might not be for everyone -- but when you are sincere and passionate -- the audience will come. Be prepared to have frustrations.
