Ep. 133: Alejandro Amenábar's "The Others" (2001)

WEBVTT
00:00:00.719 --> 00:00:02.879
What have you done with my daughter?
00:00:05.040 --> 00:00:06.719
I am your daughter.
00:00:07.200 --> 00:00:08.320
I had to choose that one.
00:00:08.480 --> 00:00:08.720
Yeah.
00:00:08.880 --> 00:00:09.119
Yeah.
00:00:09.519 --> 00:00:10.560
Well, I like that scene.
00:00:10.720 --> 00:00:10.880
Yeah.
00:00:11.199 --> 00:00:12.160
The seance scene.
00:00:12.400 --> 00:00:15.839
I was gonna keep it longer, but then it starts with the screaming and it's like, when do you cut the screaming?
00:00:16.320 --> 00:00:16.800
Yeah, yeah.
00:00:16.879 --> 00:00:17.039
Yeah.
00:00:17.199 --> 00:00:17.839
All right.

00:00:47.439 --> 00:00:50.640
Today we are looking at a film suggested to us by a listener.
00:00:50.799 --> 00:00:55.439
It is Alejandro Amenabar's 2001 film, The Others.
00:00:55.600 --> 00:00:58.399
It scored 84% on Rotten Tomatoes.
00:00:58.560 --> 00:00:59.600
Let's get into it.
00:00:59.840 --> 00:01:01.679
Chad, could we get a summary, please?
00:01:01.920 --> 00:01:16.959
In 1945, immediately following the end of the Second World War, a woman who lives with her two photosensitive children on her darkened old family estate in the Channel Islands becomes convinced that the home is haunted.
00:01:17.200 --> 00:01:17.439
Yeah.
00:01:17.920 --> 00:01:18.239
Yep.
00:01:18.480 --> 00:01:24.319
There are several, and lots of them are a lot longer than that, but I think that kind of gives us the gist.
00:01:24.560 --> 00:01:26.719
Yeah, and I like that it doesn't give away the twist.
00:01:26.879 --> 00:01:27.040
Yeah.
00:01:27.120 --> 00:01:27.280
Yeah.
00:01:27.439 --> 00:01:27.760
All right.
00:01:27.840 --> 00:01:28.319
Thank you.
00:01:28.480 --> 00:01:34.640
Now our sinister sip for this eerie film is the ghost sip from the haunted wall.
00:01:34.959 --> 00:01:35.200
Okay.
00:01:35.920 --> 00:01:36.400
Cheers.
00:01:36.640 --> 00:01:37.599
Cheers, everybody.
00:01:41.359 --> 00:01:42.319
Oh my god.
00:01:42.719 --> 00:01:44.879
I could smell it and I knew I wasn't gonna like it.
00:01:45.120 --> 00:01:46.319
These are stiff ones.
00:01:46.560 --> 00:01:47.120
Yeah.
00:01:47.439 --> 00:01:50.480
This is whiskey, vermouth, and gin.
00:01:50.879 --> 00:01:53.120
Oh man, that's double on the gin, right?
00:01:53.359 --> 00:01:54.480
Like the other one was a gin.
00:01:54.560 --> 00:01:55.200
This is a gin.
00:01:55.280 --> 00:01:57.120
I don't know if whiskey and gin really go together.
00:01:57.359 --> 00:01:59.680
Not with vermouth as the mixer.
00:02:00.799 --> 00:02:01.519
I hate that.
00:02:01.680 --> 00:02:03.519
If anyone wants it, it's a programs.
00:02:03.920 --> 00:02:04.079
Sure.
00:02:05.280 --> 00:02:05.680
There you go.
00:02:05.920 --> 00:02:07.120
Let's let's split it.
00:02:07.280 --> 00:02:07.519
Yeah.
00:02:07.599 --> 00:02:10.240
I was like, I'm not waiting for a few drink on that.
00:02:10.560 --> 00:02:16.479
I taste the whiskey first, and then afterwards the other stuff comes in, but I actually don't mind the whiskey.
00:02:16.960 --> 00:02:19.360
I don't like whiskey, so it's very whiskey forward.
00:02:19.439 --> 00:02:20.800
And then I like gin.
00:02:21.039 --> 00:02:23.520
Oh, that's it's a sipper as well.
00:02:23.599 --> 00:02:24.879
Just take little little sips.
00:02:25.039 --> 00:02:25.439
Little sips.
00:02:25.680 --> 00:02:26.159
And it's good.
00:02:26.319 --> 00:02:28.240
I'll just keep finishing the one from the last episode.
00:02:28.719 --> 00:02:30.479
That was also a little sipper.
00:02:31.280 --> 00:02:34.560
Oh not wasting my calories on that yet.
00:02:34.960 --> 00:02:35.919
Oh, I forgot the sugar.
00:02:36.080 --> 00:02:36.960
No, just kidding.
00:02:40.479 --> 00:02:41.759
No sweetness whatsoever.
00:02:43.439 --> 00:02:44.080
All right.
00:02:44.560 --> 00:02:50.159
Well, I'm sure this isn't the first time we've seen this film, but let's get into our first or current impressions of it.
00:02:50.400 --> 00:02:52.159
Chad, what did you think of the others?
00:02:52.479 --> 00:02:57.280
I have seen this film before in the theater when it came out, and I like this film a lot.
00:02:57.439 --> 00:02:58.400
I thought it was good.
00:02:58.479 --> 00:02:59.280
I love the twist.
00:02:59.360 --> 00:03:05.280
I think Nicole Kidman is a great actress, and I like the way the kids acted with her.
00:03:05.520 --> 00:03:10.400
They weren't annoying, I didn't find, and I enjoyed the story.
00:03:10.560 --> 00:03:12.800
So I really enjoy this film.
00:03:13.039 --> 00:03:25.840
On a second watching, I think it reminds me a little bit of Sixth Sense, where once the thing is revealed, you're just kind of sitting through a movie until if you already know what's gonna happen, then it's the payoff just isn't there.
00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:26.319
Yeah.
00:03:26.479 --> 00:03:30.000
So to me, it's more of a a one and done type deal.
00:03:30.080 --> 00:03:35.919
Like you really don't need to revisit it more than because once you get that whole thing, then you're you're like, what?
00:03:36.240 --> 00:03:36.479
Yeah.
00:03:37.039 --> 00:03:38.080
But I still enjoyed it.
00:03:38.159 --> 00:03:38.879
I thought it was good.
00:03:39.039 --> 00:03:40.960
Obviously, not as much as I enjoyed it the first time.
00:03:41.120 --> 00:03:44.400
When I watched it the first time, I remember remember being like, Oh, that was awesome.
00:03:44.639 --> 00:03:45.280
Like, yeah.
00:03:45.439 --> 00:03:46.000
Yeah, for sure.
00:03:46.159 --> 00:03:46.400
Thanks.
00:03:46.479 --> 00:03:46.639
Sam?
00:03:46.879 --> 00:03:47.039
Yep.
00:03:47.199 --> 00:03:48.319
I would say probably the same.
00:03:48.560 --> 00:03:49.759
I I really enjoyed the movie.
00:03:49.840 --> 00:03:50.560
I thought it was good.
00:03:50.719 --> 00:03:51.120
Same thing.
00:03:51.199 --> 00:03:52.560
Nicole Kidman was great.
00:03:52.800 --> 00:03:59.439
Some things I picked out this time, um, that I that yeah, that I but I see I I didn't mind rewatching it.
00:03:59.599 --> 00:04:05.360
So even though I knew the twist, I couldn't remember how it came to fruition, like how it was revealed.
00:04:06.560 --> 00:04:08.080
So but I knew the twist.
00:04:08.240 --> 00:04:09.360
So I knew what it was.
00:04:09.599 --> 00:04:16.240
And I found similar with the Sixth Sense where I'm looking for clues to what yeah.
00:04:16.480 --> 00:04:19.680
And I didn't find it as obvious as Sixth Sense was.
00:04:19.839 --> 00:04:23.360
But maybe it's because I saw Sixth Sense a few times as well.
00:04:23.519 --> 00:04:25.439
So I didn't find it as drawing.
00:04:25.759 --> 00:04:30.480
Obviously, there's some things that you're like, okay, those people are creepy and they're pale and whatever it might be.
00:04:30.639 --> 00:04:32.879
Um, but I still liked it.
00:04:32.959 --> 00:04:35.360
I think it still holds up, even if you've seen it before.
00:04:35.439 --> 00:04:38.399
So this is not the first time that I've watched this.
00:04:38.480 --> 00:04:47.040
I've talked about it on a previous episode that the first time I watched this was at an old theater in Taiwan, and I had to drive home at night through rice patties.
00:04:47.360 --> 00:04:48.720
Oh, that that was this movie.
00:04:48.879 --> 00:04:49.040
Okay.
00:04:49.360 --> 00:04:49.519
Yeah.
00:04:49.600 --> 00:04:53.439
And this movie creeped me out so much the first time I watched it.
00:04:53.680 --> 00:04:55.920
Yeah, it was just so unsettling, so unnerving.
00:04:56.079 --> 00:04:58.240
And I had seen it a couple times since then.
00:04:58.399 --> 00:05:01.199
And every time I still liked it, watching it again this time.
00:05:01.360 --> 00:05:07.120
It was funny because like all my one-liners are the sort of like, here's the twist, foreshadowed.
00:05:07.279 --> 00:05:08.720
Like it's yeah, yeah.
00:05:08.959 --> 00:05:16.399
I don't think it's as obvious as Sixth Sense, but like when you're look if you're looking for the reveal, there's a lot of lines that it's like, oh, okay.
00:05:16.560 --> 00:05:18.560
Oh yeah, yeah.
00:05:18.800 --> 00:05:23.040
But I still liked it, even knowing the twist, I still enjoy this movie.
00:05:23.199 --> 00:05:26.800
The audio in it, I'll get into that, but like, yeah, it just it pulled me in again.
00:05:26.879 --> 00:05:27.759
So I quite liked it.
00:05:27.839 --> 00:05:28.480
Yeah, nice.
00:05:28.560 --> 00:05:30.480
Yeah, I think it would have been a good one to see in theaters.
00:05:30.560 --> 00:05:32.639
So I'm jealous that you guys saw it in theaters the first time.
00:05:32.800 --> 00:05:34.000
Yeah, it it's definitely a theater.
00:05:34.240 --> 00:05:37.519
Like it's it's gotta be loud and yeah, like have space.
00:05:37.680 --> 00:05:38.079
Yeah, yeah.
00:05:38.240 --> 00:05:40.480
Yeah, it's definitely not a laptop or a cell phone movie.
00:05:42.240 --> 00:05:45.120
You really need the the sound effects and stuff for it.
00:05:45.360 --> 00:05:45.920
Yeah, yeah.
00:05:46.079 --> 00:05:46.879
Yeah, all right.
00:05:46.959 --> 00:05:49.279
Let's get into our tropes hall of shame.
00:05:49.519 --> 00:05:51.040
Sam, kick us off, please.
00:05:51.360 --> 00:05:52.160
Creepy house.
00:05:52.319 --> 00:05:52.800
Yep, yep.
00:05:53.040 --> 00:05:55.839
Doors shutting and opening and creaking.
00:05:56.000 --> 00:05:57.439
Yes, those are my first two.
00:05:57.759 --> 00:05:58.800
All right, thank you.
00:05:59.040 --> 00:06:03.120
My first one is the hired help that shows up without explanation.
00:06:04.480 --> 00:06:05.519
You see, you have some.
00:06:05.839 --> 00:06:07.120
You made me think of the change language.
00:06:07.279 --> 00:06:09.920
Like, I would I was waiting for them to say, like, we were sent by the agency.
00:06:10.160 --> 00:06:10.959
Right, yeah.
00:06:11.199 --> 00:06:13.040
Uh, and my other one is the fog.
00:06:13.439 --> 00:06:14.480
Yes, so much fog.
00:06:15.519 --> 00:06:30.560
So, my question, uh, I had the fog as well, but my question about that is like the fog is uh almost a character, like yeah, so I wouldn't really classify it as a trope because there is an abundance of it, but it keeps them locked in that area, right?
00:06:30.720 --> 00:06:33.279
So it needs to be there to it's like a gateway.
00:06:33.439 --> 00:06:36.160
Yeah, it's purposeful, it's not just like we're out on the moors at the end.
00:06:36.319 --> 00:06:41.759
Yeah, because like there are times where you're in a you're in a cemetery and there's just like a shit ton of fog.
00:06:41.839 --> 00:06:42.160
Yeah, yeah.
00:06:42.319 --> 00:06:43.120
It's like, well, why?
00:06:43.199 --> 00:06:45.920
Yeah, but this is there and it has a purpose.
00:06:46.240 --> 00:06:51.839
So that's why I wasn't like sure if I would classify it as a trope because it's almost its own thing.
00:06:52.319 --> 00:06:53.600
Yeah, for I I agree.
00:06:53.680 --> 00:06:54.319
Yeah, good point.
00:06:54.480 --> 00:06:57.680
Uh Chad, uh, so uh what tropes did you have then?
00:06:57.920 --> 00:06:59.839
Well, I did have the oversized mansion.
00:06:59.920 --> 00:07:00.160
Yep.
00:07:00.399 --> 00:07:03.439
Like it seems I don't know why they have to be so large.
00:07:03.600 --> 00:07:07.680
Like with that, with three kids in that huge estate.
00:07:07.920 --> 00:07:08.319
Two kids.
00:07:08.480 --> 00:07:09.360
Oh, two kids, yeah.
00:07:09.519 --> 00:07:10.000
Two kids.
00:07:10.240 --> 00:07:14.160
Well, so four of them, like because the husband, if he's around, right?
00:07:14.319 --> 00:07:15.439
That's just massive.
00:07:15.519 --> 00:07:18.560
I think and there's always a room that's covered in sheets.
00:07:19.360 --> 00:07:24.399
Like, I don't know why it's just like get rid of the room or like and change it into a play pen or something.
00:07:24.560 --> 00:07:25.040
I don't know.
00:07:25.600 --> 00:07:27.279
Move the furniture elsewhere.
00:07:27.519 --> 00:07:28.160
Yeah.
00:07:29.360 --> 00:07:30.480
Those were my two.
00:07:30.560 --> 00:07:31.120
All right, thank you.
00:07:31.279 --> 00:07:32.240
Sam, did you have some others?
00:07:32.399 --> 00:07:32.959
Yeah, I did.
00:07:33.040 --> 00:07:35.439
Uh sneaking out of the house, hanging onto a drain pipe.
00:07:35.600 --> 00:07:35.759
Yep.
00:07:35.839 --> 00:07:36.160
Oh, yeah.
00:07:36.639 --> 00:07:39.120
Seems specific, but it happens in every spooky hole.
00:07:39.279 --> 00:07:40.079
It does, yeah.
00:07:40.399 --> 00:07:42.639
And then the kids see something and they're not believed.
00:07:42.800 --> 00:07:43.040
Right.
00:07:43.199 --> 00:07:43.439
Okay.
00:07:43.600 --> 00:07:43.839
Yeah.
00:07:44.079 --> 00:07:44.480
Thank you.
00:07:44.639 --> 00:07:47.279
I also had a piano plays, but no one is there.
00:07:48.079 --> 00:07:48.240
Yep.
00:07:48.399 --> 00:07:49.680
And then Chad, did you have any others?
00:07:49.759 --> 00:07:50.240
No, I'm done.
00:07:50.399 --> 00:07:50.800
All right, Sam.
00:07:51.439 --> 00:07:52.720
I just had the seance.
00:07:52.879 --> 00:07:53.040
Yeah.
00:07:53.120 --> 00:07:53.279
Yeah.
00:07:53.439 --> 00:07:54.079
That's my last one.
00:07:54.240 --> 00:07:55.120
Oh, I guess, yeah.
00:07:55.279 --> 00:07:58.079
There's always a seance in a ghost dome, it seems.
00:07:58.319 --> 00:07:58.720
All right.
00:07:58.879 --> 00:07:59.279
Thank you.
00:07:59.360 --> 00:08:03.759
We're gonna get into the don't go back in the house and what could have prevented them going through this.
00:08:03.920 --> 00:08:05.439
And I didn't have one.
00:08:05.519 --> 00:08:09.600
I put I just said like my don't go back in the house comment is I don't die?
00:08:09.680 --> 00:08:10.079
I don't know.
00:08:10.240 --> 00:08:10.879
Yeah.
00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:15.519
It would have been pre her going crazy, right?
00:08:15.680 --> 00:08:16.000
Yeah.
00:08:16.160 --> 00:08:18.160
So you would have to like get therapy.
00:08:18.560 --> 00:08:21.040
Deal with the grief of your dead husband better.
00:08:21.439 --> 00:08:22.639
Yes, I don't know.
00:08:22.800 --> 00:08:23.040
Yeah.
00:08:23.199 --> 00:08:23.360
Yeah.
00:08:23.600 --> 00:08:25.839
Chad, is is that your don't go back in the house?
00:08:26.079 --> 00:08:33.919
Yeah, like I didn't know what to what to put because they're already dead and they're in this thing, and I I was like, like, how do you prevent that?
00:08:34.080 --> 00:08:36.720
She went crazy and yeah and did this to her kids.
00:08:36.799 --> 00:08:40.399
So I guess it would be, yeah, pre-madness.
00:08:40.799 --> 00:08:42.639
Go go seek help.
00:08:42.799 --> 00:08:44.960
Like get the doctor, talk to somebody.
00:08:45.039 --> 00:08:46.879
I I guess that's all I got.
00:08:46.960 --> 00:08:47.200
Yeah.
00:08:47.440 --> 00:08:48.559
I I don't really have much.
00:08:48.799 --> 00:08:49.919
Yeah, no, it's it was a tough one.
00:08:50.080 --> 00:08:50.639
Sam, did you?
00:08:50.960 --> 00:08:52.399
I just said don't murder your children.
00:08:52.639 --> 00:08:52.799
Yeah.
00:08:55.039 --> 00:08:56.240
That's her PSA today.
00:08:56.960 --> 00:08:58.080
Lock up the pillows.
00:09:00.639 --> 00:09:02.960
Everything else is locked in the house.
00:09:06.399 --> 00:09:07.039
All right.
00:09:07.279 --> 00:09:08.240
Thank you for that.
00:09:08.320 --> 00:09:10.320
Uh let's get into our one-liners.
00:09:10.399 --> 00:09:12.159
What stuck out from the film for you, Chad?
00:09:12.399 --> 00:09:21.120
I had when she asks the daughter, it was like she's on her like three days of punishment reading the Bible or whatever.
00:09:21.440 --> 00:09:30.159
And she comes in there and and Nicole Kidman's character is questioning the daughter, and she's like, I told you there was someone in the house and you punished me.
00:09:30.240 --> 00:09:31.440
Now I don't know what to say.
00:09:33.279 --> 00:09:35.039
She was a great sassy daughter.
00:09:35.279 --> 00:09:35.919
She was, yeah.
00:09:36.240 --> 00:09:37.039
I really liked her.
00:09:37.120 --> 00:09:38.879
I even put there, I really like the daughter.
00:09:38.960 --> 00:09:39.200
Yeah.
00:09:39.360 --> 00:09:41.519
And then I said, I like this line.
00:09:41.840 --> 00:09:45.200
Uh she says all this stuff about ghosts is rubbish.
00:09:45.360 --> 00:09:48.080
And then she expects us to believe everything in the Bible.
00:09:48.399 --> 00:09:48.879
Oh, yes.
00:09:48.960 --> 00:09:50.879
That I think that might have been my test of time.
00:09:51.120 --> 00:09:51.440
Oh.
00:09:52.480 --> 00:09:53.039
Sorry.
00:09:53.200 --> 00:09:53.840
No, no, no.
00:09:54.159 --> 00:09:56.159
I was just like, I love that, like pointing out the irony.
00:09:56.320 --> 00:09:56.559
Yeah.
00:09:56.799 --> 00:09:58.320
Anne was great for questioning that.
00:09:58.399 --> 00:09:59.840
Uh, Sam, what lines did you have?
00:10:00.159 --> 00:10:04.720
I had when the husband comes back, uh, Charles, and she goes, Charles, you look so different.
00:10:04.799 --> 00:10:06.720
And then he just says, Sometimes I bleed.
00:10:06.879 --> 00:10:12.240
And it just like the line delivery on that, and just how yeah, yeah, sad it is.
00:10:12.879 --> 00:10:20.559
And then I also had the like when Grace admits to what she did, like her delivery of that, and like how she's like looking off into the distance.
00:10:20.639 --> 00:10:22.240
I could read the whole thing, but it's kind of long.
00:10:22.399 --> 00:10:22.639
Right.
00:10:22.799 --> 00:10:33.600
Um, but when she is she just starts with like, at first I couldn't understand what the pillows were doing in my hands, and then it just goes on, and the the delivery was awesome, the way she says it, the camera, everything about that.
00:10:34.080 --> 00:10:35.600
Holding the two children, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:10:35.919 --> 00:10:38.720
As she's explaining what she did to them, and yeah, oh yeah.
00:10:39.039 --> 00:10:39.440
So good.
00:10:39.679 --> 00:10:40.399
That's true, yeah.
00:10:40.639 --> 00:10:44.240
I had silence is something we prize very highly in the house.
00:10:44.399 --> 00:10:44.799
Oh, yeah.
00:10:44.960 --> 00:10:49.440
Just there's a lot of good lines, and then the main housekeeper, I don't remember her name.
00:10:49.600 --> 00:10:50.720
Oh, the the woman.
00:10:50.879 --> 00:10:51.360
The woman.
00:10:51.519 --> 00:10:56.240
Yeah, that's um Miss Mills says the only thing that moves here is the light.
00:10:56.399 --> 00:10:57.120
Oh, I had that one.
00:10:57.519 --> 00:10:58.159
I had that one, too.
00:10:58.480 --> 00:10:59.840
Because nobody else is moving.
00:11:00.159 --> 00:11:01.120
Yeah, yeah.
00:11:01.360 --> 00:11:04.399
Uh Chad, what's another couple lines you had?
00:11:04.639 --> 00:11:06.720
I had doves are anything but holy.
00:11:06.960 --> 00:11:08.080
They poop on our windows.
00:11:08.320 --> 00:11:08.879
That was my laugh.
00:11:10.399 --> 00:11:13.039
Just the way you said, they poop on our windows.
00:11:14.879 --> 00:11:21.679
Then I had I think sometimes the world of the living gets mixed up with the world of the dead.
00:11:21.919 --> 00:11:22.080
Yeah.
00:11:22.320 --> 00:11:23.600
Yeah, that was a good one too.
00:11:23.759 --> 00:11:28.000
I also had Anne saying, like, she won't stop until she kills us.
00:11:28.240 --> 00:11:28.399
Yeah.
00:11:28.559 --> 00:11:28.799
Right?
00:11:28.879 --> 00:11:28.960
Yeah.
00:11:29.519 --> 00:11:30.240
That's what happened.
00:11:30.399 --> 00:11:35.360
And then I just liked, I think it's when she's closing the curtains, but I'm not 100% sure.
00:11:35.440 --> 00:11:37.360
But she's my name's Anne, and I'm walking.
00:11:37.519 --> 00:11:39.120
I'm walking, and my name's Anne.
00:11:39.279 --> 00:11:42.960
Like a scared child just talking to themselves to calm down.
00:11:43.360 --> 00:11:45.120
Like, say something, but what do you want me to say?
00:11:45.279 --> 00:11:46.480
And then she goes into that.
00:11:46.559 --> 00:11:46.799
Yeah.
00:11:47.120 --> 00:11:47.279
Yeah.
00:11:47.440 --> 00:11:48.799
Uh Chad, any others?
00:11:49.039 --> 00:11:53.039
I love the fact that they bring up, but they don't really address it.
00:11:53.120 --> 00:11:54.960
But when they always say that day.
00:11:55.200 --> 00:11:55.519
Yes.
00:11:55.759 --> 00:12:02.240
Like when it when that day happened or when mom did that day, or what or whatever.
00:12:02.320 --> 00:12:09.440
But they bring it up lots, and then throughout the movie, you don't know what that day was until the end and it's revealed.
00:12:09.519 --> 00:12:10.480
So I really like that.
00:12:10.639 --> 00:12:12.559
Yeah, the hints of like what the fuck happened.
00:12:12.879 --> 00:12:13.120
Yeah.
00:12:13.200 --> 00:12:13.519
Yeah.
00:12:13.679 --> 00:12:14.879
So and and that's it.
00:12:14.960 --> 00:12:15.440
That's all I have.
00:12:15.600 --> 00:12:19.440
And that segues well to my last one where it's again Anne's delivery.
00:12:19.519 --> 00:12:20.240
She was so good.
00:12:20.960 --> 00:12:22.960
But she's just like, Mommy went mad.
00:12:23.200 --> 00:12:23.519
Yes.
00:12:24.639 --> 00:12:25.600
So so well done.
00:12:25.759 --> 00:12:26.080
Yeah.
00:12:26.480 --> 00:12:26.799
All right.
00:12:26.960 --> 00:12:31.440
Well, we we've all said we like this film, but some things did not hold up for Sam.
00:12:32.320 --> 00:12:34.159
I I wrote, okay, I wrote two.
00:12:34.320 --> 00:12:35.200
And then Sam.
00:12:35.600 --> 00:12:37.039
Well, Chad and I both had none.
00:12:37.120 --> 00:12:37.279
Yeah.
00:12:37.759 --> 00:12:38.720
Sam, what didn't hold up for you?
00:12:38.879 --> 00:12:39.919
Um, so I said I had two.
00:12:40.000 --> 00:12:40.879
I actually only have one.
00:12:41.039 --> 00:12:41.200
Okay.
00:12:41.440 --> 00:12:51.200
And it's really silly, but when the two kids are out in the house or out of the house and Nicole Kidman's looking for them and she yells children instead of their names.
00:12:51.279 --> 00:12:52.240
It's just so stupid.
00:12:52.399 --> 00:12:54.799
Like I would never be like, children, come in.
00:12:55.120 --> 00:12:55.759
Like, you know what I mean?
00:12:55.840 --> 00:12:57.759
I don't know if it's somebody help the children.
00:12:57.919 --> 00:12:58.080
Yeah.
00:12:58.960 --> 00:13:00.000
Children, children.
00:13:00.159 --> 00:13:01.600
And it's like you would yell their names.
00:13:01.840 --> 00:13:02.639
Why would you be like, Anne?
00:13:03.919 --> 00:13:04.960
Yeah, it's just so weird.
00:13:05.039 --> 00:13:08.559
And that's like what you would call like a group of kids that you don't know.
00:13:08.799 --> 00:13:11.759
Like you would be screaming, you'd be like, Anne, Anne, right?
00:13:11.919 --> 00:13:13.600
Like you wouldn't children.
00:13:13.919 --> 00:13:16.480
Is it a posh British thing where like the parents are removed?
00:13:16.559 --> 00:13:17.919
But she was not a removed parent.
00:13:18.240 --> 00:13:20.080
No, she stayed at home with them entirely.
00:13:20.399 --> 00:13:20.960
She was locked.
00:13:21.360 --> 00:13:24.240
So for me, that didn't hold up, like just because it's like, yeah.
00:13:24.320 --> 00:13:27.120
I like the nanny could say, children, come with me, kind of thing.
00:13:27.200 --> 00:13:29.039
But she was like with her kids all the time.
00:13:29.279 --> 00:13:30.480
She would have yelled her kids' names.
00:13:30.559 --> 00:13:30.720
Yeah.
00:13:30.879 --> 00:13:31.279
All right.
00:13:31.519 --> 00:13:31.840
That's it.
00:13:32.000 --> 00:13:32.240
I think.
00:13:32.480 --> 00:13:32.559
Okay.
00:13:32.799 --> 00:13:32.960
Yeah.
00:13:33.039 --> 00:13:34.559
So nothing too scathing.
00:13:34.639 --> 00:13:35.360
That's good.
00:13:36.159 --> 00:13:37.919
I'm not a scathing person.
00:13:38.159 --> 00:13:38.879
Come on.
00:13:39.120 --> 00:13:43.039
Only when it comes to like alien space movies.
00:13:43.120 --> 00:13:43.360
Yeah.
00:13:43.519 --> 00:13:44.559
Alien vampire movies.
00:13:44.799 --> 00:13:45.840
Alien truck movies.
00:13:46.559 --> 00:13:46.639
Yeah.
00:13:46.960 --> 00:13:48.399
Alien truck vampires.
00:13:49.039 --> 00:13:49.840
That's our next one.
00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:50.480
That's our next one.
00:13:50.799 --> 00:13:52.879
We need to find an alien truck vampire movie.
00:13:54.639 --> 00:13:56.320
That's our decade break.
00:13:56.720 --> 00:14:00.000
Oh, things to piss off Sam is the theme.
00:14:00.080 --> 00:14:02.480
And it's just absolutely.
00:14:02.720 --> 00:14:04.000
Oh, can you imagine?
00:14:04.080 --> 00:14:04.480
Yeah.
00:14:04.720 --> 00:14:11.039
One whole uh like podcast is dedicated to the movie that just rips Sam apart.
00:14:11.759 --> 00:14:12.720
Just kills me.
00:14:12.799 --> 00:14:13.519
I quit.
00:14:14.720 --> 00:14:15.759
This is not okay.
00:14:15.919 --> 00:14:17.759
I have a life other than this.
00:14:18.960 --> 00:14:20.080
We're back to two hosts.
00:14:24.639 --> 00:14:25.200
All right.
00:14:25.360 --> 00:14:27.039
So that was what didn't hold up.
00:14:27.279 --> 00:14:29.679
And gratuitous, most gratuitous scene.
00:14:30.000 --> 00:14:30.879
None of us had anything.
00:14:31.039 --> 00:14:33.279
Thinking back, did anything come up to you guys?
00:14:33.519 --> 00:14:41.679
I guess the locking of the doors, like it happens so much, but I mean it needs like she feels like those kids need to be locked in all the time.
00:14:41.840 --> 00:14:44.399
Like every every door needs to be closed as you leave.
00:14:44.559 --> 00:14:44.799
Yeah.
00:14:45.120 --> 00:14:46.320
And that's to keep the light out, right?
00:14:46.720 --> 00:14:46.879
Yeah.
00:14:47.360 --> 00:14:49.919
I understand the doors need to close, but why lock them?
00:14:50.000 --> 00:14:53.360
Like, does she not think that Nicholas is old enough to not open the door?
00:14:53.600 --> 00:14:54.080
Open the door?
00:14:54.399 --> 00:14:56.159
Because the kids know their condition.
00:14:56.320 --> 00:14:56.559
Yeah.
00:14:56.720 --> 00:14:56.879
Yeah.
00:14:57.039 --> 00:15:00.480
So you think that they would because at the end they're like, it doesn't hurt anymore, right?
00:15:00.639 --> 00:15:00.720
Yeah.
00:15:01.120 --> 00:15:04.240
So they know what it feels like to be hit by the sun.
00:15:04.559 --> 00:15:04.879
Yeah.
00:15:05.120 --> 00:15:10.639
So I just don't um yeah, because she constantly and the dungeon master key set.
00:15:10.879 --> 00:15:12.480
Like she's got the bigger ring.
00:15:12.799 --> 00:15:14.799
Yeah, that's another trope I guess I missed.
00:15:14.960 --> 00:15:19.440
But she also has copies to the that she gives to the maid.
00:15:19.519 --> 00:15:21.039
And it and what does she say?
00:15:21.200 --> 00:15:30.399
Fifteen fifteen different keys for all the 50 doors that is it because okay, I'm wondering, is it because they keep opening randomly?
00:15:30.480 --> 00:15:31.600
So she like you know what I mean?
00:15:32.000 --> 00:15:33.200
So she locks them so they can't.
00:15:33.679 --> 00:15:37.279
Oh, because the people are she wants them.
00:15:37.519 --> 00:15:37.679
Yeah.
00:15:37.840 --> 00:15:38.240
Yeah, yeah.
00:15:38.559 --> 00:15:40.159
That that must probably it, yeah.
00:15:40.240 --> 00:15:40.639
Yeah, yeah.
00:15:40.879 --> 00:15:43.759
Because I remember her like how pissed she was when the one door opened.
00:15:44.480 --> 00:15:45.519
She's like, Who's doing this?
00:15:45.679 --> 00:15:46.639
Yeah, she meant to be.
00:15:47.840 --> 00:15:48.159
Yeah.
00:15:48.240 --> 00:15:48.559
Yeah.
00:15:48.960 --> 00:15:49.600
All right.
00:15:49.759 --> 00:15:56.399
Well, not much for the gratuitous, but maybe some things were terrifying or titillating, and I'm gonna go first.
00:15:56.639 --> 00:16:13.840
I didn't find anything titillating, but for me, at the end of the movie, especially if you don't know the twist that's coming, when Nicholas is at the gravestone and the three employees are walking towards him, like just still creeps me out when Anne sees them and she's like, run, Nicholas, Nicholas.
00:16:14.000 --> 00:16:17.519
Yeah, they they seem really menacing when they're just kind of plodding towards them.
00:16:17.600 --> 00:16:18.240
Yeah, yeah.
00:16:18.399 --> 00:16:20.240
So that terrified that was my terrifying moment.
00:16:20.320 --> 00:16:27.519
There's other things in this movie that creep me out, but that was like that was the like note that hit and then carried over till like I got home, basically.
00:16:27.840 --> 00:16:30.639
Yeah, uh Chad, what was terrifying or titillating to you?
00:16:30.879 --> 00:16:33.200
Well, I had where she's playing with the Marionette.
00:16:33.279 --> 00:16:33.600
Oh, yeah.
00:16:34.080 --> 00:16:42.159
And when I remember when I saw that first, and it's in the trailer too, but I remember when I saw that first, and you see the old lady's hand, and I was what the hell is that?
00:16:42.320 --> 00:16:50.559
And then she comes around and she's laughing, and you have that young kid's voice with the old woman's face, yeah.
00:16:50.799 --> 00:16:52.720
And like, mommy, I am your daughter.
00:16:54.000 --> 00:16:55.919
Yeah, it's it's super creepy.
00:16:56.080 --> 00:16:56.960
So that one got me.
00:16:57.120 --> 00:17:00.320
Yeah, and that's why I chose that clip for the opening because it is perfect.
00:17:00.559 --> 00:17:00.960
Yeah, right.
00:17:01.200 --> 00:17:03.279
And it was it was great, and other things were too.
00:17:03.360 --> 00:17:05.440
So let's get into our test of time.
00:17:05.680 --> 00:17:07.519
Chad, what was your test of time?
00:17:07.759 --> 00:17:12.960
Well, I thought the acting still holds up, like it's it's really well done.
00:17:13.039 --> 00:17:14.480
Yeah, and that's and the story.
00:17:14.640 --> 00:17:19.839
Like I I like the story and I like the the way it was brought to life on the screen.
00:17:20.000 --> 00:17:20.400
Yeah, yeah.
00:17:20.640 --> 00:17:22.880
Especially like they say don't do movies with children.
00:17:23.119 --> 00:17:23.759
And pets.
00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:27.039
And pets, but Nicholas and Anne were spot on.
00:17:27.279 --> 00:17:27.599
Awesome.
00:17:27.680 --> 00:17:27.839
Yeah.
00:17:28.000 --> 00:17:28.240
Yeah.
00:17:28.799 --> 00:17:29.119
Yeah.
00:17:29.599 --> 00:17:38.480
Anne was the like the the bitchy little daughter that uh and she wasn't that bad, but she was just calling to question, like like a daughter would do as they get to a certain age.
00:17:38.559 --> 00:17:40.319
Like she's just like, well, why are we doing this?
00:17:40.480 --> 00:17:42.160
And why like why is this?
00:17:42.240 --> 00:17:44.000
What why do you believe this blindly?
00:17:44.720 --> 00:17:47.200
And uh, so I really, really did like the kids.
00:17:47.279 --> 00:17:47.519
Yeah.
00:17:47.920 --> 00:17:49.680
Sam, what were your some of your tested times?
00:17:50.000 --> 00:17:51.599
I think a lot of these kind of like overlap.
00:17:51.839 --> 00:17:57.359
I know Chad, you kind of said, I just I think just the film in general, like in here.
00:17:57.440 --> 00:18:02.000
I have I really liked the twist because you don't like the first time I remember not seeing it coming at all.
00:18:02.240 --> 00:18:02.960
Yeah, I didn't see it.
00:18:03.440 --> 00:18:05.839
Um, I thought the acting was really good in it.
00:18:06.000 --> 00:18:07.200
I liked the outfits picked.
00:18:07.279 --> 00:18:08.880
I liked Nicole Kidman's outfit.
00:18:09.039 --> 00:18:09.279
Yeah.
00:18:09.440 --> 00:18:12.400
The tension that was built in the film um as a whole.
00:18:12.559 --> 00:18:13.440
I liked the vibes.
00:18:13.599 --> 00:18:15.359
I liked that it was like kind of like gothic-y.
00:18:15.599 --> 00:18:15.759
Yeah.
00:18:16.000 --> 00:18:18.799
I liked, yeah, I liked the how saturated colors, right?
00:18:19.039 --> 00:18:21.039
Yeah, like it was just bright and green.
00:18:21.119 --> 00:18:23.200
It was it was all kind of dead.
00:18:23.359 --> 00:18:24.240
It was diffused light.
00:18:24.319 --> 00:18:24.799
It was so good.
00:18:24.880 --> 00:18:24.960
Yeah.
00:18:25.200 --> 00:18:27.599
So I just think like the like they did a really good job.
00:18:27.680 --> 00:18:31.680
I think it's well written, I think it's well acted, and I think it's the setting and the cuts are good.
00:18:31.839 --> 00:18:33.599
The film, the videography as a whole is good.
00:18:33.759 --> 00:18:35.920
So yeah, I think just the film is itself.
00:18:36.000 --> 00:18:36.480
Yeah, yeah.
00:18:36.640 --> 00:18:36.960
All right.
00:18:37.039 --> 00:18:42.240
Uh, a couple for me, I love the way it starts almost like a bedtime story where it's it's the black story.
00:18:42.480 --> 00:18:44.160
She starts talking and she yeah.
00:18:44.480 --> 00:18:46.240
Now, children, are you sitting comfortably?
00:18:46.400 --> 00:18:50.960
Yeah, and then she starts to tell the story, and it's like and it lulls you into comfort.
00:18:51.039 --> 00:18:53.680
It's like, oh, it's a bedtime story or it's a fairy tale.
00:18:53.839 --> 00:18:59.519
And then my second test of time is it cuts to harsh light and Nicole Kidman screaming.
00:18:59.759 --> 00:19:03.200
Yes, and I remember that in the theater, just being like, Oh fuck.
00:19:03.279 --> 00:19:06.240
Yeah, because it just comes out of nowhere, it's so good.
00:19:06.400 --> 00:19:06.720
Yeah.
00:19:06.960 --> 00:19:14.880
Well, and it's one of the things that I I actually did have another test of time, and I said, All the jump scares still work, like they still got me.
00:19:14.960 --> 00:19:15.440
Yes.
00:19:15.599 --> 00:19:20.559
And maybe because I hadn't seen it, like I'd only seen it one other time when I went to it in the theater.
00:19:20.640 --> 00:19:23.359
And then when I watched it this time, I was like, Oh fuck.
00:19:23.519 --> 00:19:24.079
Oh, geez.
00:19:25.119 --> 00:19:29.440
It just got me when the piano room door slams in my face and knocked her back.
00:19:29.599 --> 00:19:31.039
Yeah, I was like, Whoa.
00:19:31.279 --> 00:19:31.759
Yeah, yeah.
00:19:32.000 --> 00:19:33.200
Did you have any other tests of time?
00:19:33.359 --> 00:19:34.160
No, that's it now.
00:19:34.319 --> 00:19:34.400
Sam?
00:19:34.799 --> 00:19:35.839
Really, this time, I'm done.
00:19:36.000 --> 00:19:37.200
Yeah, for real.
00:19:37.759 --> 00:19:43.119
No, but just to kind of on what you said with the bedtime story kind of thing, usually that's something we criticize.
00:19:43.200 --> 00:19:47.920
So in all the movies we've seen before where they've done like a voiceover or like some type it's not been done well.
00:19:48.079 --> 00:19:52.319
Yeah, well, usually it's like like I'm thinking about Jack Frost, like, call me a bedtime.
00:19:53.039 --> 00:19:53.680
Yeah, yeah.
00:19:53.920 --> 00:19:55.839
Just like this one doesn't great.
00:19:56.319 --> 00:19:57.759
Yeah, it goes well with it.
00:19:57.839 --> 00:20:03.759
Yeah, well, it really sounds like a mother telling her kids, yeah, like trying to get them to sleep, right?
00:20:03.920 --> 00:20:04.960
It doesn't, yeah.
00:20:05.200 --> 00:20:05.519
I don't know.
00:20:05.599 --> 00:20:14.400
I bought I bought it this time, whereas you're right, that because I have been heavily critical of voiceovers that in other movies, but this one worked.
00:20:14.559 --> 00:20:15.200
Yeah, yeah.
00:20:15.440 --> 00:20:17.200
I'll just finish off with a few more of mine.
00:20:17.359 --> 00:20:24.799
When Victor wakes up and the curtains are open, like so many other movies, and we the scared acting does not work.
00:20:25.440 --> 00:20:29.440
This little kid, like you could hear the terror, and they played it perfectly.
00:20:29.599 --> 00:20:30.240
Yeah, yeah.
00:20:30.400 --> 00:20:31.119
So well done.
00:20:31.359 --> 00:20:35.200
I loved the camera angles, the camera movement, the use of space in that house.
00:20:35.279 --> 00:20:42.559
Like it was very disorienting to understand the layout and the number of doors and movement, like, but that made you feel lost as well.
00:20:42.720 --> 00:20:43.759
It was it was well done.
00:20:43.839 --> 00:20:50.480
It wasn't it wasn't like the ginger snaps basement that like it was like they've turned like eight corners in a sub basement.
00:20:51.119 --> 00:20:51.839
Where are they?
00:20:52.000 --> 00:20:55.519
Yeah, like the the geography of the house was well used, I thought.
00:20:55.599 --> 00:20:59.279
Yeah, and I think like the mom knowing the rooms that don't get light, that kind of stuff.
00:20:59.519 --> 00:21:12.400
Yeah, because like at the end, of course, when she's like, This is our house, this is our house, like that kind of thing, you could see how people who freshly moved in, yeah, how terrifying it would be to like have these locked doors and not know the layout yet.
00:21:12.480 --> 00:21:16.079
So they're still learning that and how much creepier it would have been for them, right?
00:21:16.240 --> 00:21:16.640
Yeah, yeah.
00:21:16.799 --> 00:21:18.640
And I loved uh oh no, go ahead.
00:21:18.720 --> 00:21:18.880
Go ahead.
00:21:19.039 --> 00:21:24.799
I I loved when they're opening up the curtains or and it's like each room the camera spins and lights up.
00:21:24.960 --> 00:21:29.279
Yes, and it's almost like a doll's house set, but they it was just so cool.
00:21:29.519 --> 00:21:51.200
One of the things that uh just through talking, I didn't write this down, but the thing I loved, and I hope you guys don't have this in another category, but was the final shot where she is with her kids and she does say this is our house, and and the kid Victor is looking at them, and then they just fade away and he's staring at them, and the guy's like, Come on, Victor, let's go.
00:21:51.440 --> 00:21:55.759
They get into the into the car and and he's still looking back and driving up.
00:21:55.839 --> 00:21:59.519
But that that image of them in the house as it fades.
00:22:00.319 --> 00:22:00.480
Yeah.
00:22:00.640 --> 00:22:01.519
I thought was really cool.
00:22:01.759 --> 00:22:01.920
Yeah.
00:22:02.000 --> 00:22:02.400
Oh yeah.
00:22:02.480 --> 00:22:06.559
I realized I said Victor in the curtains, but it's Nicholas that wakes up because Victor was opening the curtains.
00:22:06.640 --> 00:22:06.799
Yeah.
00:22:07.359 --> 00:22:11.119
Well, and then there's that like touch his cheek to let let him know he's real.
00:22:11.200 --> 00:22:15.039
And then he t touches him and he's like, ah, he just like loses his mind.
00:22:15.119 --> 00:22:15.359
Yeah.
00:22:15.519 --> 00:22:17.920
It was very well done for such a young actor.
00:22:18.079 --> 00:22:18.240
Yeah.
00:22:18.480 --> 00:22:22.319
And it's it's very subtle because she's wearing an elasticated cuff.
00:22:22.400 --> 00:22:22.559
Yeah.
00:22:22.720 --> 00:22:25.359
And it's a blue like shirt cuff that touches him.
00:22:25.440 --> 00:22:27.279
So it is a different person in the room.
00:22:27.680 --> 00:22:30.799
So that's the first time that if you don't know, you think you're seeing the ghost.
00:22:30.960 --> 00:22:31.119
Yeah.
00:22:31.519 --> 00:22:37.359
And you never notice, or I never really put this together, but they never get out of their jammies, right?
00:22:37.440 --> 00:22:37.599
Yeah.
00:22:37.759 --> 00:22:41.839
But they're always in what I'm assuming she killed them in.
00:22:42.000 --> 00:22:42.240
Yeah.
00:22:42.559 --> 00:22:44.400
And is and they're always in that.
00:22:44.559 --> 00:22:49.599
No matter what time of the day it is, when they're doing their lessons, they're always in their their nightclothes.
00:22:49.680 --> 00:22:49.759
Yeah.
00:22:49.920 --> 00:22:52.640
And there was part of me that thought, like, are the kids still in the bed too?
00:22:52.720 --> 00:22:57.599
Because there's this scene where Grace is apologizing to Anne and Anne is sleeping.
00:22:57.839 --> 00:23:03.759
And Anne does not move or wake up, even though she's being, I'm like, kids sleep really deeply.
00:23:04.079 --> 00:23:08.480
But then as Grace leaves, Anne opens her eyes to show that she was feigning sleep.
00:23:08.559 --> 00:23:08.799
Right.
00:23:08.960 --> 00:23:12.319
But I was like, oh my God, is that that's the positions they died in, maybe?
00:23:12.559 --> 00:23:12.960
Yeah.
00:23:13.119 --> 00:23:13.359
Yeah.
00:23:13.599 --> 00:23:14.000
Ugh.
00:23:14.160 --> 00:23:14.400
Yeah.
00:23:14.720 --> 00:23:19.039
My last test of time, just because it was an interesting kind of twist on the trope of the seance.
00:23:19.200 --> 00:23:28.319
But I loved, especially as it's being revealed that holy shit, they're dead, and you see the seance, and the woman's doing the writing, and you hear Ant like, yeah, I'll be like, That's my daughter.
00:23:28.559 --> 00:23:30.160
She's saying that's her daughter or whatever.
00:23:30.240 --> 00:23:30.480
Yeah.
00:23:30.640 --> 00:23:36.480
And then Nicole Kimbinn out of frustration is like like shaking the table, like, look at me, look at me, because she doesn't realize she's dead yet.
00:23:36.559 --> 00:23:36.720
Yeah.
00:23:36.960 --> 00:23:38.960
And then it cuts to like the table shaking on its own.
00:23:39.039 --> 00:23:40.640
Like, I just thought that was so well done.
00:23:40.880 --> 00:23:42.880
The cut of that scene was really well done, too.
00:23:43.039 --> 00:23:48.000
Like, well, on the paper, when she's ripping up, picks some pick rips up the paper and like throws it away.
00:23:48.160 --> 00:23:51.279
Like, could you imagine being in that and seeing that happen?
00:23:51.440 --> 00:23:53.920
Like that would just be insane.
00:23:54.400 --> 00:23:55.920
And the fact they're like, oh fuck.
00:23:56.160 --> 00:23:58.240
They're like, Well, oh, yeah, we'll leave in the morning.
00:23:58.319 --> 00:24:00.079
And it's like in the morning.
00:24:00.559 --> 00:24:01.519
I am leaving right now.
00:24:02.000 --> 00:24:03.039
No, I'm already gone.
00:24:03.200 --> 00:24:03.759
I'm out.
00:24:04.079 --> 00:24:05.519
Victor's traumatized.
00:24:05.680 --> 00:24:10.559
We've just seen paper get ripped in front of us by a being that's not here.
00:24:11.200 --> 00:24:12.720
There's a big shape hole in the wall.
00:24:14.000 --> 00:24:15.119
Maybe they don't want us here.
00:24:15.359 --> 00:24:19.519
It's like that Eddie Murphy scene where he's like, you know, you walk in and he's like, get out.
00:24:19.599 --> 00:24:21.119
Oh, fucking see you later.
00:24:24.720 --> 00:24:26.799
Yeah, they were so non-plussed.
00:24:26.960 --> 00:24:27.200
No.
00:24:27.680 --> 00:24:29.200
Oh, thank you for the lovely time.
00:24:29.359 --> 00:24:29.680
Yeah.
00:24:30.000 --> 00:24:33.039
Like you could see a bit of fear in the in the mom, right?
00:24:33.200 --> 00:24:33.279
Yeah.
00:24:34.160 --> 00:24:38.319
But the father was just like, no, no, let's investigate this further.
00:24:40.000 --> 00:24:41.200
Oh, I'd be so pissed.
00:24:41.359 --> 00:24:43.200
I'd be that's where I'm waiting in the car.
00:24:43.440 --> 00:24:44.960
Like already there.
00:24:47.039 --> 00:24:47.440
Have fun.
00:24:47.599 --> 00:24:48.160
I'll be out there.
00:24:48.880 --> 00:24:50.799
This place, like you wouldn't even get to sleep.
00:24:50.880 --> 00:24:51.920
I would never get to sleep.
00:24:52.319 --> 00:24:52.480
No.
00:24:52.799 --> 00:24:53.839
There's no way.
00:24:55.839 --> 00:24:58.079
I would ask the like seance people to take me with them.
00:24:58.400 --> 00:24:58.640
That's right.
00:24:58.720 --> 00:24:58.799
Yeah.
00:24:59.200 --> 00:25:00.240
Okay, have fun here.
00:25:00.319 --> 00:25:00.559
Yeah.
00:25:00.720 --> 00:25:02.880
I'm sure there's a hotel just down the road.
00:25:02.960 --> 00:25:03.680
I can I can go.
00:25:04.000 --> 00:25:04.480
Anywhere else.
00:25:04.640 --> 00:25:04.799
Yeah.
00:25:05.119 --> 00:25:06.000
Anywhere else but here.
00:25:07.839 --> 00:25:10.960
Well, their reaction was hilarious, and some other things were as well.
00:25:11.279 --> 00:25:12.960
Sam, did you have anything for laugh out loud?
00:25:13.039 --> 00:25:13.200
No.
00:25:13.359 --> 00:25:13.599
Nope.
00:25:13.680 --> 00:25:13.920
All right.
00:25:14.079 --> 00:25:15.759
Chad, what was your laugh out loud?
00:25:16.000 --> 00:25:22.319
Well, it wasn't really like a gaffar or anything, but the only thing I that I thought was hilarious was they poop on our windows.
00:25:22.400 --> 00:25:24.880
So I I kind of chuckled at that line.
00:25:24.960 --> 00:25:38.720
Everything else was pretty serious, so I just didn't find uh a lot of humor in this script, which is, you know, usually you can find some dark humor in a in a horror movie or something that you can kind of laugh about.
00:25:38.799 --> 00:25:42.559
But this I was engaged, but I didn't find anything super funny about it.
00:25:42.880 --> 00:25:43.920
No, no, not at all.
00:25:44.079 --> 00:25:45.920
Infanticide is not humorous.
00:25:47.759 --> 00:25:49.599
And neither is World War II.
00:25:49.920 --> 00:25:50.720
Yeah, yeah, I know.
00:25:53.279 --> 00:25:56.079
Where can we find the comic button in this?
00:26:00.000 --> 00:26:03.279
And yeah, my laugh out loud was taken with the poop on the window as well.
00:26:03.359 --> 00:26:04.079
So nice.
00:26:04.319 --> 00:26:05.839
Poop on the window's funny.
00:26:07.920 --> 00:26:09.039
I didn't find it funny.
00:26:09.200 --> 00:26:11.039
I didn't write it down or even remember it.
00:26:14.480 --> 00:26:14.880
All right.
00:26:15.039 --> 00:26:20.720
We've talked about the sound a bit already, but let's get into what was eerie or ear splitting in this film.
00:26:20.880 --> 00:26:26.079
And for me, I loved the house noises and like Victor's thumping feet and that.
00:26:26.640 --> 00:26:27.359
That's what I had too.
00:26:27.440 --> 00:26:27.599
Yeah.
00:26:27.680 --> 00:26:27.839
Yeah.
00:26:28.240 --> 00:26:28.720
Very well done.
00:26:28.880 --> 00:26:30.240
The sound effects were very well done.
00:26:30.319 --> 00:26:30.480
Yeah.
00:26:30.559 --> 00:26:30.720
Yeah.
00:26:30.880 --> 00:26:32.960
Sam, did you have something else for eerie ear splitting?
00:26:33.200 --> 00:26:36.559
I found that at times the sound was too much.
00:26:36.880 --> 00:26:41.279
So like they really had a lot of like suspense music and those types of things.
00:26:41.440 --> 00:26:51.920
And one of the things, and I don't know if it's just the version I had or if it's like my speaker setup, but I found that there was a huge discrepancy between the voices and the music.
00:26:52.079 --> 00:26:55.599
So I felt that it was really loud compared to the music was very loud.
00:26:55.759 --> 00:26:56.000
Yeah.
00:26:56.079 --> 00:27:00.559
And so I don't know, like I said, if it was just my version, but it was too like it was very noticeable for me.
00:27:00.720 --> 00:27:03.599
And there's like pretty much no silence in the movie.
00:27:03.839 --> 00:27:09.599
Like the music fit, but it's constantly playing that suspense music constantly through the whole thing.
00:27:09.759 --> 00:27:10.559
And it was loud.
00:27:10.640 --> 00:27:14.319
I found I had to turn it down a little bit and then turn it back up to hear the speaking as well.
00:27:14.400 --> 00:27:14.640
Right.
00:27:15.039 --> 00:27:18.960
I found like Nicole Kidman's character or Grace whispers a lot.
00:27:19.119 --> 00:27:19.279
Yeah.
00:27:19.440 --> 00:27:21.039
And so I had to turn it up for that.
00:27:21.200 --> 00:27:25.200
But then I just sort of lived in the loudness of the music and the house noise.
00:27:25.440 --> 00:27:25.599
Yeah.
00:27:25.920 --> 00:27:26.160
Yeah.
00:27:26.319 --> 00:27:29.519
I had to turn it down a couple of times too because it was pretty loud.
00:27:29.599 --> 00:27:33.519
However, I remember seeing it in the theater and where you don't get that option.
00:27:34.319 --> 00:27:38.720
And with the stomping and the it really accentuates those effects.
00:27:38.960 --> 00:27:43.359
So you do when that first thing stomps and he pulls the curtains back.
00:27:43.519 --> 00:27:45.119
I remember being super freaked out.
00:27:47.599 --> 00:27:48.960
And you're like, ah, yeah.
00:27:49.279 --> 00:27:53.759
So I think it sells it in the theater, but it's the same as Avengers, too, right?
00:27:53.839 --> 00:28:01.279
Like all the explosions and stuff are super and the music is super loud, but then the the audio when they're talking, you're like, what's he saying?
00:28:01.440 --> 00:28:02.160
Like yeah.
00:28:02.799 --> 00:28:03.119
All right.
00:28:03.200 --> 00:28:05.519
Now we're gonna move into our what the fuck moments.
00:28:05.599 --> 00:28:07.359
Chad, you're the only one that had something.
00:28:07.440 --> 00:28:08.960
What made you say what the fuck?
00:28:09.200 --> 00:28:12.559
So mine is going back to when I first watched it.
00:28:12.640 --> 00:28:14.160
There was no what the fuck this time.
00:28:14.400 --> 00:28:15.119
It's the reveal.
00:28:15.200 --> 00:28:15.440
Yeah.
00:28:15.759 --> 00:28:21.200
When I first watched this film and it all came out that they were the ghost, I was like, holy shit.
00:28:21.359 --> 00:28:22.960
Yeah, that is mind-blowing.
00:28:23.839 --> 00:28:25.920
And so that really that really got me.
00:28:26.000 --> 00:28:30.960
So that was my what the fuck looking back as a young Chad watching this the first time.
00:28:31.119 --> 00:28:32.880
So that's yeah, that's what I see.
00:28:33.119 --> 00:28:35.119
This is one that I would like, just like with the Sixth Sense.
00:28:35.359 --> 00:28:45.039
I want someone who has never seen this movie before, who like never has like, and obviously our listeners uh know the twists, but I want someone who goes into this blind today, like in 2026.
00:28:45.279 --> 00:28:48.000
If you've never seen it, I want you to and does it hold up?
00:28:48.079 --> 00:28:48.880
Like, does it yeah?
00:28:49.279 --> 00:28:51.359
So Louise watched this with me.
00:28:51.440 --> 00:28:58.720
Yeah, and I swear she has seen it, because I could have sworn I would have made her watch it in Taiwan on DVD, but she she's like, nope, don't remember it.
00:28:58.799 --> 00:29:00.559
And I'm like, you don't remember, you don't remember.
00:29:00.640 --> 00:29:01.039
She's like, no.
00:29:01.279 --> 00:29:05.599
So I'm like, okay, I'm gonna stop asking because if you keep asking that, she's like, okay, I'm gonna start looking for it.
00:29:05.759 --> 00:29:09.680
Yeah, and then yeah, with like half an hour left in the film, she's like, Oh, they're dead.
00:29:09.839 --> 00:29:12.559
And I was just like, Oh, like you've ruined it for yourself.
00:29:12.880 --> 00:29:21.680
So yeah, I never asked her what keyed her into it, but like she called Nicole Kidman and the kids being dead, like way before I clued in when I watched it the first time.
00:29:22.079 --> 00:29:22.319
Right.
00:29:22.559 --> 00:29:30.400
So then when Anne yells they're dead, or when you see that when she finds the book of the dead picture in the house, yeah, like Louise is just like, okay.
00:29:30.640 --> 00:29:32.480
Oh, so there was no like moment.
00:29:32.960 --> 00:29:34.640
Oh, and I was like, Oh my god, wasn't that so good?
00:29:34.720 --> 00:29:36.079
She's like, eh, it was okay.
00:29:36.319 --> 00:29:38.960
Oh, yeah, but that's because like she gets it.
00:29:39.039 --> 00:29:43.119
But I guess it like, I mean, if you watch the Sixth Sense and like 15 minutes in, you're like, Oh, he's dead.
00:29:43.359 --> 00:29:43.839
Yeah.
00:29:45.440 --> 00:29:48.640
So yeah, it it it stole the what the fuck moment from her.
00:29:48.799 --> 00:29:49.039
Yeah.
00:29:49.279 --> 00:29:50.079
Oh, that's too bad.
00:29:50.319 --> 00:29:53.119
Because I also watched this with Justin, who hadn't seen it.
00:29:53.359 --> 00:29:56.319
But with like 40 minutes left, he's like, All right, I'm going to bed.
00:29:56.400 --> 00:29:57.279
And I was like, What?
00:29:57.599 --> 00:30:00.160
No, you can't, but you need to stay for this.
00:30:00.640 --> 00:30:07.279
But I didn't want to like, I was like, Oh, okay, maybe we'll watch the rest tomorrow, and then we never can like I just watched it by myself after that.
00:30:07.519 --> 00:30:08.079
That's too bad.
00:30:08.240 --> 00:30:10.799
And so maybe I'll make him watch it and I'll report back.
00:30:11.039 --> 00:30:11.599
But I don't know.
00:30:11.759 --> 00:30:12.559
He was really okay.
00:30:12.640 --> 00:30:17.680
Because he's not really like super into horror movies, so like he'll sometimes watch them with me and be on his phone or be whatever.
00:30:17.759 --> 00:30:19.759
And yeah, this is very atmospheric.
00:30:20.240 --> 00:30:30.160
Yeah, and I yeah, I remember watching this because I went to this with Cathy and she liked it because I when I said, Oh, we're doing the other, she's like, Oh, I've seen that.
00:30:30.240 --> 00:30:34.400
And I say, Yeah, we went to it to the theater, and she's like, Yes, yes, I remember.
00:30:34.480 --> 00:30:43.119
And and then we started talking about she's like, Yeah, I really like that film, and she's not a horror movie person at all, but she liked that one and she liked the grudge.
00:30:43.359 --> 00:30:46.480
Those are the two that she that she bought into.
00:30:46.640 --> 00:30:47.839
Yeah, she bought into some good ones.
00:30:48.000 --> 00:30:48.480
Yeah, yeah.
00:30:48.640 --> 00:30:52.319
I'm glad to hear it wasn't like she really liked Leprechaun in the Hood.
00:30:52.559 --> 00:30:53.119
Oh my god.
00:30:55.039 --> 00:30:57.359
It's like, I don't know if we can be together.
00:30:59.119 --> 00:31:01.680
It's the anniversary of Leprechaun in the Hood.
00:31:01.759 --> 00:31:03.920
Let's get in the hood.
00:31:04.799 --> 00:31:07.839
Sometimes she'll creep through the produce section, leopard hood, left.
00:31:12.559 --> 00:31:22.720
Oh my god, the it's the children of the film could not go into the light, and some other things may have stayed in the shadows as we watched the film.
00:31:22.960 --> 00:31:24.880
Sam, what did you have hiding in the shadows?
00:31:25.039 --> 00:31:28.799
Uh, we already kind of talked about it, but Anne was low-key a bitch and was good at it.
00:31:28.960 --> 00:31:32.559
Like she just those like she you're right, Chad.
00:31:32.640 --> 00:31:34.319
It's just like she's like, Well, what the fuck?
00:31:34.400 --> 00:31:37.359
Like, she just called people out on their shit and I liked it and I appreciated it.
00:31:37.599 --> 00:31:39.200
Yeah, she was a great voice of common sense.
00:31:39.359 --> 00:31:39.599
Yes.
00:31:39.680 --> 00:31:40.160
Yeah, yes.
00:31:40.319 --> 00:31:40.480
Yeah.
00:31:40.640 --> 00:31:42.240
Chad, what did you have hiding in the shadows?
00:31:42.559 --> 00:31:51.359
So I just had a question about so there's what, two or three scenes where Nicole Kidman gets a shotgun and just walks around.
00:31:51.519 --> 00:31:56.160
And then do the others see the lanterns that they bring out?
00:31:56.319 --> 00:31:59.039
Like, are they just floating shit around all the time?
00:31:59.440 --> 00:32:02.400
Because if they're not there, we saw the paper get ripped, right?
00:32:02.640 --> 00:32:04.160
And we saw the table move.
00:32:04.319 --> 00:32:08.880
So obviously they can see what these ghosts are doing.
00:32:09.119 --> 00:32:13.759
So then do they see them walking through the hallways with the with the lanterns?
00:32:13.920 --> 00:32:17.039
Do they see the shotgun just like coming down the hallway?
00:32:17.519 --> 00:32:18.160
It's so scary.
00:32:18.400 --> 00:32:18.880
What do you imagine?
00:32:19.119 --> 00:32:20.240
What is happening here?
00:32:22.160 --> 00:32:31.119
And do they see the well, they obviously see the curtains being drawn and being like they don't open them, but they see the curtains being drawn.
00:32:31.200 --> 00:32:31.440
Yeah.
00:32:31.759 --> 00:32:33.440
Because the kid runs and draws them.
00:32:33.599 --> 00:32:39.599
So I just find it a little inconsistent, and I'm wondering what the others can see and what they can't.
00:32:39.920 --> 00:32:45.920
I love the fact that it's like because Nicole Kidman, like they keep closing the curtains and the family the like the others keep opening it.
00:32:46.319 --> 00:32:49.119
Their solution is well, we'll just get rid of the curtains.
00:32:49.599 --> 00:32:50.640
Yeah, no curtains.
00:32:50.960 --> 00:32:51.519
Pull them all down.
00:32:51.599 --> 00:32:52.400
Yeah, there we go.
00:32:52.480 --> 00:32:53.680
Now they'll never be closed again.
00:32:53.839 --> 00:32:54.079
Yeah.
00:32:54.240 --> 00:32:55.440
Um I don't know.
00:32:55.519 --> 00:32:56.160
That's a good question.
00:32:56.240 --> 00:33:00.799
Because like the in the piano room, she closes the piano, but then when she comes back, it's open.
00:33:00.960 --> 00:33:01.599
It's open again.
00:33:01.759 --> 00:33:05.279
There's part of me that I thought, like, does that mean she's not affecting reality?
00:33:05.440 --> 00:33:10.799
So she thinks she closed it, but then or they like, yeah, are they are the doors actually being locked?
00:33:11.039 --> 00:33:18.000
Or is that just something in her her world or her world that she thinks is happening, but it's not actually happening?
00:33:18.240 --> 00:33:18.799
I don't know.
00:33:19.359 --> 00:33:20.880
So that was my question.
00:33:21.039 --> 00:33:22.559
Is what do the others see?
00:33:22.720 --> 00:33:24.400
Yeah, what do they not see?
00:33:24.960 --> 00:33:34.960
Because there's a lot of stuff going on in there that I was like, man, if I was in a house and I saw a double barrel shotgun just coming down the hallway, I wouldn't be calling a seance.
00:33:35.039 --> 00:33:36.640
I would be getting the fuck out of Dodge.
00:33:37.200 --> 00:33:39.839
It's like I am not staying here another night.
00:33:40.160 --> 00:33:44.319
Victor's being touched by ghosts, like and a shotgun is zooming down.
00:33:44.720 --> 00:33:46.880
A shotgun is walking down the hallway.
00:33:47.279 --> 00:33:55.680
And if I was in the room where she had all the sheets and she was flicking those sheets off at the moment, that would freak the shit out of me.
00:33:56.240 --> 00:33:57.359
I would not be staying.
00:33:57.519 --> 00:34:03.119
So my question is do you see that, or is that something in her mind that's happening?
00:34:03.359 --> 00:34:04.559
I think it's something in the ghost.
00:34:04.960 --> 00:34:11.679
Like, I think that's like the two like because like you don't see them, you don't see a spoon being lifted up as they're eating the peas at dinner.
00:34:12.159 --> 00:34:14.719
And like you don't so I think it's just like their own world.
00:34:14.800 --> 00:34:18.639
And I think at some points they cross over because like I think it's like the line you said, yeah.
00:34:18.880 --> 00:34:22.239
Yeah, sometimes the world of the living gets mixed up with the world of the dead.
00:34:22.400 --> 00:34:22.639
Yeah.
00:34:22.800 --> 00:34:26.159
And she does say the like the maid does say, what's her name again?
00:34:26.320 --> 00:34:26.559
Mrs.
00:34:26.719 --> 00:34:27.599
Mills Mills.
00:34:27.920 --> 00:34:30.960
She does say sometimes we'll see them, sometimes we won't.
00:34:31.119 --> 00:34:31.360
Right.
00:34:31.440 --> 00:34:31.679
Yeah.
00:34:31.840 --> 00:34:33.519
Like, so is that the same with the ghosts?
00:34:33.599 --> 00:34:37.039
Sometimes they sometimes they see what's happening, and sometimes they don't.
00:34:37.280 --> 00:34:37.840
I think so.
00:34:37.920 --> 00:34:38.239
Yeah.
00:34:38.400 --> 00:34:40.320
So, anyways, just an interesting thing.
00:34:40.400 --> 00:34:42.159
I thought I was like, well, what can they see?
00:34:42.320 --> 00:34:43.039
What can't they see?
00:34:43.199 --> 00:34:49.440
And it's not really explained, but they just kind of in a throwaway line, just kind of say, Yeah, this could happen or it couldn't.
00:34:49.519 --> 00:34:49.679
Right.
00:34:50.000 --> 00:34:53.280
And it's like, and it's interesting with this one because we see it from the flipped side.
00:34:53.360 --> 00:34:53.599
Yeah.
00:34:53.760 --> 00:34:54.000
Right?
00:34:54.079 --> 00:35:00.159
Like any other ghost movie, you're like, you see what you see, and the ball is rolling down the hallway, or like you hear what you see, but this one we don't know what they see.
00:35:08.880 --> 00:35:10.400
It's like Jesus Christ.
00:35:12.320 --> 00:35:13.440
That was so good.
00:35:14.239 --> 00:35:19.840
Okay, we love this movie, and something might have done it better, or this was the one that did it the best.
00:35:20.000 --> 00:35:21.679
Let's get into our freight done right.
00:35:22.000 --> 00:35:25.039
And my comment is this is the fright done right.
00:35:25.280 --> 00:35:27.840
As far as like from the ghost perspective, right?
00:35:28.079 --> 00:35:28.800
This movie did it.
00:35:28.880 --> 00:35:30.079
This movie creeped me out.
00:35:30.239 --> 00:35:30.880
Very well done.
00:35:31.039 --> 00:35:31.280
Yeah.
00:35:31.440 --> 00:35:31.679
Yeah.
00:35:31.920 --> 00:35:32.239
Chad.
00:35:32.400 --> 00:35:33.519
Yeah, that was my point too.
00:35:33.840 --> 00:35:46.400
I just thought this one for the genre and what it what it did, and then when it came out, it was kind of other than the sixth sense that has that big reveal, this one has kind of a different reveal, but I I liked it.
00:35:46.960 --> 00:35:47.199
Sam?
00:35:47.360 --> 00:35:48.400
Yeah, I said the same thing.
00:35:48.480 --> 00:35:49.599
I said it's so good.
00:35:49.760 --> 00:35:55.760
I said it's comparable to like the shining and sixth sense, um, in terms of like kind of that twist or whatever.
00:35:56.000 --> 00:35:57.840
But yeah, and all really good movies.
00:35:57.920 --> 00:35:58.800
So absolutely.
00:35:58.960 --> 00:35:59.599
All right, thank you.
00:35:59.760 --> 00:36:04.159
Now let's get into the research that we did to find out more about the film.
00:36:04.320 --> 00:36:06.079
Chad, what did you have for research?
00:36:06.480 --> 00:36:15.840
The disease the children have is an actual disease known as xeroderma pigmentosum, which is basically an extreme sensitivity to sunlight.
00:36:16.000 --> 00:36:19.920
It is very rare with roughly a thousand people in the world who have it.
00:36:20.400 --> 00:36:26.000
And to get the kids worked up, Alejandro would play scary music when they weren't expecting it.
00:36:26.239 --> 00:36:27.360
Yeah, that's so cool.
00:36:27.599 --> 00:36:28.960
Yeah, we kind of I don't know.
00:36:29.440 --> 00:36:37.199
I think I think kids uh and in 2001 there would have been more things, but I think kids really got a bum deal when they're working on films.
00:36:37.440 --> 00:36:40.480
It's like you're supposed to be scared or you're supposed to be crying.
00:36:40.559 --> 00:36:48.000
I'm gonna slap you in the face and then cry, and then we'll film it, and then you know, here's a lollipop.
00:36:48.880 --> 00:36:57.360
Sorry, at least occasional or unexpected scary sounds or music is better than like, well, I can't remember what film was, but the director liked to make the kid cry.
00:36:57.440 --> 00:36:59.440
It's like you're a horrible actor and nobody likes you.
00:36:59.840 --> 00:37:01.840
Yeah, I do remember that action.
00:37:02.079 --> 00:37:03.440
Yeah, Jesus.
00:37:03.679 --> 00:37:04.559
Like awesome.
00:37:05.280 --> 00:37:07.280
Sam, what did you have for bonus features?
00:37:07.599 --> 00:37:10.880
About 5,000 different kids additioned for the role of Anne and Nicholas.
00:37:11.199 --> 00:37:11.760
Wow, wow.
00:37:11.920 --> 00:37:18.559
Um, Nicholas's the actor James Bentley was cast right away, but Anne's position took a lot longer, which makes sense.
00:37:18.639 --> 00:37:23.280
You really have to have a really good kid in that role, and I think she did great.
00:37:23.440 --> 00:37:30.880
And then Nicole Kidman actually tried to convince Alejandro Amnabar to find another actress for the part.
00:37:31.039 --> 00:37:36.079
She had just come off of filming in Moulin Rouge, and she didn't want to take on a film that explored such dark places.
00:37:36.880 --> 00:37:38.719
This movie is a juggernaut.
00:37:39.519 --> 00:37:43.920
Budget 17 million, box office 210.
00:37:44.239 --> 00:37:44.639
Whoa.
00:37:44.880 --> 00:37:45.679
Yeah, worldwide.
00:37:45.760 --> 00:37:48.000
It's one of the highest-grossing horror films of all time.
00:37:48.559 --> 00:37:48.960
Awesome.
00:37:49.119 --> 00:37:49.440
Yeah.
00:37:49.679 --> 00:37:55.920
And this one I found interesting, just Nicole Kidman quit briefly during rehearsals because playing Grace gave her nightmares.
00:37:56.000 --> 00:38:00.719
And she the quote is like, at one point, I didn't want to make the film because I couldn't even go there emotionally.
00:38:00.880 --> 00:38:03.519
It was still very difficult to exist in that state.
00:38:03.679 --> 00:38:06.639
When you're doing an intense film, the boundaries blur.
00:38:06.719 --> 00:38:06.960
Yeah.
00:38:07.199 --> 00:38:11.280
And then fortunately, a Minabar and his team were able to convince her to return to the film.
00:38:11.440 --> 00:38:14.480
And then she said, I was so glad to step out of her in the end.
00:38:14.639 --> 00:38:20.000
So and I think she was like dealing with separation from Tom Cruise at the same time, and he was a producer on the film.
00:38:20.079 --> 00:38:21.920
So, like, she had a lot of shit in the background.
00:38:22.559 --> 00:38:23.199
Yeah, that's too bad.
00:38:23.280 --> 00:38:23.440
Yeah.
00:38:23.519 --> 00:38:24.559
Chad, what else did you have?
00:38:24.800 --> 00:38:26.239
I thought this was kind of interesting.
00:38:26.480 --> 00:38:27.840
This is to speak to yours.
00:38:28.000 --> 00:38:30.079
I think stood the test of time with the voiceover.
00:38:30.239 --> 00:38:33.280
The movie opens with Nicole Kidman in a voiceover reading a story.
00:38:33.360 --> 00:38:36.719
She begins with words, now children, are you sitting comfortably?
00:38:36.800 --> 00:38:37.599
Then I'll begin.
00:38:37.760 --> 00:38:47.039
The BBC radio program, Listen with Mother, broadcast in the UK between 1950 and 1982, always began, Are you sitting comfortably?
00:38:47.199 --> 00:38:48.000
Then I'll begin.
00:38:48.159 --> 00:38:48.400
Ooh.
00:38:48.960 --> 00:38:49.840
Ooh, that gave me chills.
00:38:50.000 --> 00:38:50.719
Yeah, me too.
00:38:53.039 --> 00:39:04.159
And then this was the first ever to receive the best film award at the Goyas, Spain's National Film Awards, with not a single word of Spanish spoken in it.
00:39:04.320 --> 00:39:04.559
Yeah.
00:39:04.960 --> 00:39:06.480
It earned eight awards.
00:39:06.719 --> 00:39:07.199
Crazy.
00:39:07.440 --> 00:39:07.760
That year.
00:39:07.840 --> 00:39:08.000
Yeah.
00:39:08.079 --> 00:39:08.320
Yeah.
00:39:08.800 --> 00:39:10.079
Sam, what else did you have for research?
00:39:10.320 --> 00:39:11.760
Well, you kind of took mine away from me.
00:39:11.840 --> 00:39:12.800
Um when you're sorry.
00:39:12.880 --> 00:39:13.920
No, no, not you, Mike.
00:39:14.159 --> 00:39:14.559
Um sorry.
00:39:14.719 --> 00:39:16.079
Oh, I'm I'm not sorry.
00:39:16.400 --> 00:39:16.960
Good.
00:39:17.280 --> 00:39:27.519
Um so they were in the middle of divorcing the same week, actually, that the others was released, um, was when Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise actually finalized their divorce.
00:39:27.679 --> 00:39:28.079
Wow.
00:39:28.320 --> 00:39:33.920
And uh, of course, it Tom Cruise executive produced, like you mentioned, and it was the last collaboration between the two of them.
00:39:34.159 --> 00:39:40.079
But I'm curious because they have two adopted kids together that would have been similar ages, like they would have been kind of young.
00:39:40.159 --> 00:39:48.000
I think they were like mid-90s or early 90s, if that had anything to do with her having difficulty playing the part, like if that kind of hit it a different way, too.
00:39:48.239 --> 00:39:50.320
Yeah, and then of course they're killing their yeah.
00:39:50.400 --> 00:39:55.199
So I'm wondering if that like because that would for me be like oh yeah absolutely Jesus.
00:39:55.519 --> 00:39:56.079
That's it for me.
00:39:56.239 --> 00:40:05.920
All right, I just have that the blind medium is a reference to Don't Look Now, which is a film that we've done on this podcast, and international titles, nothing great.
00:40:06.079 --> 00:40:09.199
Croatia get in, which I don't know.
00:40:09.440 --> 00:40:13.679
What that doesn't yeah, get in the house, like what or get out of the house.
00:40:13.920 --> 00:40:18.719
I was just picturing like a cocking guy, like get in, like see that girl over there.
00:40:18.880 --> 00:40:20.000
Oh, yeah, get in.
00:40:20.239 --> 00:40:21.199
Just doesn't work.
00:40:21.519 --> 00:40:25.920
No, no, Serbia spirits within us, Taiwan.
00:40:26.079 --> 00:40:36.159
Weirdly, sixth sense was the translation of their yeah, and like I thought, like, well, maybe this is a mistranslation, but yeah, the Mandarin characters translate to sixth sense.
00:40:36.400 --> 00:40:36.800
Crazy.
00:40:36.960 --> 00:40:40.719
Yeah, and then Vietnam, I love this house full of ghosts.
00:40:41.280 --> 00:40:43.199
Yeah, that's on the nose, isn't it?
00:40:43.280 --> 00:40:46.960
Yeah, which I mean it kind of gives away, but then that spoils it, right?
00:40:47.039 --> 00:40:54.559
Like that that reveal I guess it does and it doesn't because like is it Nicole Kidman's experiencing a house full of ghosts, or they're the ghosts in the house?
00:40:54.800 --> 00:40:55.519
I guess, yeah, yeah.
00:40:55.599 --> 00:40:58.159
But yeah, it's a bit more of a giveaway.
00:40:58.320 --> 00:40:58.639
Yeah.
00:40:59.119 --> 00:41:04.000
All right, it's time to figure out where this movie sits on our watchability scale.
00:41:04.159 --> 00:41:05.440
I will go first.
00:41:06.079 --> 00:41:16.239
And for me, I know that we've said this is kind of a one and done, or once you know the twist, it doesn't hit as hard, but it still is a very enjoyable film.
00:41:16.400 --> 00:41:19.679
Yeah, I think if you haven't seen it, it's an eight.
00:41:19.840 --> 00:41:21.360
If you have, it's a seven.
00:41:21.599 --> 00:41:23.360
So I think I'm gonna give it the seven.
00:41:23.440 --> 00:41:30.480
I think it is a very good film, it is very well done, but suffers for the rewatch, the ability to rewatch it or view it again.
00:41:31.119 --> 00:41:32.000
Sam, what about you?
00:41:32.239 --> 00:41:33.679
I'm gonna go a little bit higher.
00:41:33.920 --> 00:41:34.960
I'm gonna give it an eight.
00:41:35.119 --> 00:41:35.760
I think it's really good.
00:41:36.239 --> 00:41:36.480
Excellent.
00:41:36.559 --> 00:41:36.719
Thanks.
00:41:36.800 --> 00:41:37.119
Chad.
00:41:37.280 --> 00:41:40.239
So mine I'm gonna I'm gonna kind of take your.
00:41:40.320 --> 00:41:42.480
If you haven't seen it, I think it's a nine.
00:41:42.639 --> 00:41:44.079
If you have, it's an eight.
00:41:44.480 --> 00:41:44.800
Yeah.
00:41:44.960 --> 00:41:48.719
So I remember loving this film when I first watched it.
00:41:49.119 --> 00:41:50.960
So I I think, yeah.
00:41:51.119 --> 00:41:53.519
If you haven't seen it, definitely seek it out.
00:41:53.679 --> 00:41:56.000
If you have, it is a good rewatch.
00:41:56.159 --> 00:42:02.159
Yeah, because I was engaged the whole time, even though the I knew the reveal, I still really, really enjoyed watching it again.
00:42:02.239 --> 00:42:04.239
Yeah, so are you gonna go nine or eight?
00:42:04.320 --> 00:42:04.559
Nine?
00:42:04.719 --> 00:42:05.280
I'll go nine.
00:42:05.440 --> 00:42:05.679
Nine?
00:42:05.760 --> 00:42:05.840
Okay.
00:42:06.400 --> 00:42:07.199
All right, awesome.
00:42:07.360 --> 00:42:10.480
Thank you, and thank all of you very much for listening to us.
