A trip through time to see not just how history has affected food but how food has affected history

This podcast focuses on how history, whether large swaths or a single event, was somehow directly affected by history. We range from topics such as how the Salem Witch Trials were possibly caused to spoiled rye grain to how the Japanese Empire was able to grow once it understood the effects of polishing rice.

In general, our listeners are obviously going to be history buffs, but also people who love food and are curious in general. We've gotten amazing feedback from people that you would never expect to have an interest in these sorts of topics and share it with their friends.
 

Personally, I listen to quite a few podcasts and watch Youtube channels that discuss historical topics. The main reason why I started this channel was that I found that while I love to know about food history, I always found the effects of food ON history to be more interesting. The more research I did, the more information I found out there on this topic. I love to hear from listeners that are always amazed to see just where I could have found the information for these episodes!

I started in early September of 2021. I had the idea for this show for a few months but I actually recorded the trailer in August. I've seen tons of other podcasters put out a trailer and never actually go any further, so I made sure to drop the first episode within less than a week after I submitted the trailer and made the announcement.
 

I release episodes every Wendsday. Posting on a regular basis is very important for me since there are so many podcasters out there (some quite good) who become lax and eventually just give up. I don't publish more often because I take a lot of time to do research for my episodes to make sure that they are top quality.

My job is pretty low stress and leaves me a lot of spare time. Also, I do podcasting with them, so my process was already streamlined before I even began.

For regular hosting costs, I pay $9/month. However, I have my equipment that I am always upgrading, so I'm not sure how to factor that in. As of now, I do all my own editing and marketing.
 

As of yet, I do not have any sponsors, but that is the goal. I've been approached by a few companies but their products didn't align with the types of listeners I have.

While I am certainly open to sponsorship and would love to discuss this with any interested companies, my main benefit at this point is having a release. I adore research and this helps me from boring my wife to death! The people that tune in are the type of people that actually want to hear what I have to say.
 

When I do a solo show, I use a Rode NT-1 condenser microphone that I connect to a Focusrite 2i2 3rd generation or a Zoom H8 recorder. When I have guests, I typically use an ATR2100X dynamic mic with a Fethead and connect in the same way. When editing, I either use Adobe Audition or Audacity depending on what kind of effects I want to do.

I am constantly reading/listening to books on the topic of food and history. For inspiration, I will sometimes watch certain Youtube channels, but I do most of the research on my own.

When I interview a guest, I try to get the highest quality audio. So, if they have a decent microphone, I have them record locally and send me to a WAV file for me to edit. Otherwise, I have them call me and I patch it into my audio setup.
 

As of the moment, the breakdown is as follows: 22.9% Stitcher, 11.7% Audible, 8.3% Apple Podcast. 4.4% Google Chrome, 4.39% IHeartRadio, 4.39% Podbean, 4.39% TuneIn, 3.41% Spotify, and the rest are via other channels.

For marketing, I primarily use Facebook and Instagram, though I find Instagram to be much more effective.
 

It's important to ask for feedback and don't get offended. It's better to have your feelings hurt and make good changes than to do a bad job and no one listens.
