A Podcast About The Seedier Side Of The City Of Love

We are two Americans (Mollie Laylin and Jennifer Fox Geraghty) who come from different parts of the country, with different backgrounds, and have found ourselves in the same place at the same time: Paris, France. We decided to create The Faux Pas-Cast to explore the taboos surrounding the French and American cultures. Our listeners are francophiles, expats, and anyone interested in the seedier side of the City of Love.

Over a couple of glasses of rosé, we discovered that we both listen to a lot of podcasts, and that the podcasts we were most attracted to were the ones that created a sense of familiarity between the listeners and the hosts, where the guests feel comfortable having open and candid conversations. We are pretty open and candid ourselves, and we thought having a place where we could explore the sexual, cultural and social taboos that the French have and Americans don't (and vice versa) would be enlightening, fun, and interesting.

We came up with the idea for The Faux Pas-Cast in August 2017, interviewed a burlesque dancer, a French playboy, and a lingerie expert in September, and officially launched our podcast with the first three episodes on October 3, 2017.

We release a full episode every other Tuesday, and a bonus or mini-sode on the Tuesdays in between. We are continuously producing content and juggling multiple episodes at once, so it's hard to say how long each an individual episode takes to produce. Luckily, there are two of us, so we are able to find the balance between the podcasting work, our day jobs, and our social lives. We currently fund the podcast ourselves, but are exploring sponsorship opportunites (hint, hint.)

As we mentioned, we are currently exploring sponsorship options, but most of what we gain from the podcast is intangible. We have met some real characters who we might never have been able to meet otherwise, and been shocked by how much we've learned. And get to see a whole different side of the city we live in. We are both artists, and the podcast also gives us a way to be creative and share our other creative projects with our audience.

We record using a Focusrite Scarlett sound card and Garageband, and sound mix through Audacity. Guests are French or expatriate friends, or interesting people recommended to us, or people we are fascinated by and reach out to. All of our guests are interviewed (as of now) in person, in our studio.

We have a significant presence on social media. (Don't forget to follow us on @thefauxpascast !) Our listeners can find us on most podcasting platforms, including iTunes, Google Play, SoundCloud, Stitcher, etc.

As artists, we were much more familiar with the creative side of podcasting than the technical side, when we started. Our advice would be to buy quality equipment (we went through many a cheap microphone!) and become comfortable with it before you start podcasting. Google and YouTube are your friends.

We're friends who have essentially created a start-up, and we've had to learn how to balance friendship, business, and creativity. We found that having a solid game plan with specific division of labor helps us to stay conflict-free and produce quality episodes we are both proud of.
