marine cloud brightening (MCB), also known as marine cloud seeding or marine cloud engineering, may be a way to make stratocumulus clouds over the sea brighter, thus reflecting more sunlight back into space in order to limit global warming. It is one of two such methods that might feasibly have a substantial climate impact, but is lower in the atmosphere than stratospheric aerosol injection. It may be able to keep local areas from overheating.
C2GDiscuss: Governing Solar Radiation Modification Research: Insights from Marine Cloud Brightening and the Great Barrier Reef
In response to climate change risks, scientists are considering the viability of developing and deploying marine cloud brightening (MCB), which seeks to whiten clouds over the ocean to reflect solar radiation back into space in order to achieve cooling. MCB is still largely theoretical, but if ever…
Audio long-read: Can artificially altered clouds save the Great Barrier Reef?
Australian scientists are developing new technologies to help protect coral from climate change.
Earlier this year, a team of researchers used a mist-machine to artificially brighten clouds in order to block sunlight above Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The project is the world’s first field trial…
Darth Vader On Geoengineering
The Dark Lord takes a break from singing 80s parodies outside the gates of COP26 to talk to us about his love for geoengineering. For an argument against Marine Cloud Brightening, here's a briefing from Geoengineering Monitor: www.geoengineeringmonitor.org/2021/04/marine_cloud_brightening/

Episode 233: “An Idea Born of Desperation”: Simon Nicholson on Solar Radiation Management
“If solar radiation management were done well—that is, the science is right, the engineering is right, and the policy and governance frameworks around all of the stuff work—then solar radiation management could be a really important, positive contribution to humanity’s responding to climate change,…
#28 Technology and Climate Change - The Next Frontier - Kelly Wanser
Kelly Wanser is a technologist and entrepreneur, Executive Director of SilverLining, a not for profit climate research organization. Previously she was Principle Director of the The Marine Cloud Brightening Project, a program focused on research in reflecting sunlight to reduce heat in climate. Sh…
COP26 Special: Marine Cloud Brightening with Professor Stephen Salter
In this episode of the Enlighten Science Podcast, we spoke to Professor Stephen Salter, Emeritus Professor at the University of Edinburgh about how geoengineering can be used to reverse the effects of climate change. Stephen provides an in-depth discussion of marine cloud brightening, a technique u…
