► Tell us about you and your podcast
How did a small town, ranch kid from Wyoming become an award winning Acupuncture Expert with his own podcast? When I was 17, my mother was diagnosed with fibromyalgia – a chronic and painful autoimmune disease. After supper, she’d ask my brother, my dad, or me to rub her aching shoulders. According to my mom, Dad would rub too hard, and my brother just couldn’t do it right. So, I became the designated “shoulder-rubber.” One night she said, “maybe you should think about doing this professionally.” That struck a huge chord with me. And that led me to graduate from Utah College of Massage Therapy School in 1999.
In 2000, I helped start the first hospital based massage therapy program in Wyoming. When the hospital program ended in 2003, I decided to make the leap into Acupuncture. Because of my passion, I earned my Master’s Degree in three years from the Colorado School of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Since then, I’ve founded Artesian Spring Oriental Medicine and served as Secretary for the Acupuncture Association of Colorado. In 2015 and 2016, I was named Best Acupuncturist by the Experience Pros radio show in Denver, CO.
And in 2017, I was inspired to produce my own podcast geared towards women, The Get Foxy Show. We talk Holistic Health, Natural Beauty, and Passionate Living so that you can cultivate and amplify your "inner fox."
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I had never intended on getting into podcasting. However, I won a door prize from a man who ran a podcasting network. He offered to help me create a show and produce three episodes. So, it didn't take me long to get things off the ground. I did have to learn a little bit about GarageBand. But that was fun.
The toughest thing was deciding who the audience of the podcast was going to be. I knew I wasn't the only guy out there who had a service to help women get healthier and feel better. So, why not talk to others who have the same mission? And thus, The Get Foxy Show was born!
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Just like anything you want to do in life, if you really want to do it, you'll find the time. For me, I dedicate a three hour block each week on my day off to putting episodes together. In the beginning, it took longer - five or six hours. But now that I've gotten experience in interviewing and producing, it's much easier. There's still a lot for me to learn. Especially about Marketing.
The show is mostly funded by my Acupuncture business. However, I do have some small patronage from Patreon.com and a couple of Affiliate Marketing links on the site. As the show continues to grow, I'm anticipating that it will start paying for itself soon.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
Financially, I'm still working on getting The Get Foxy Show to where it pays for itself. But, I'm optimistic that that will happen soon. I'm certainly open to sponsorship. Right now, I have "sponsors" that have provided me with affiliate links to their programs. These are programs that I have personally participated in and am happy with the results I received. So, I'm glad to promote them on my platform.
I think the main benefit that I currently receive from podcasting is this: I get to meet amazing people that I would have never had the chance to meet otherwise. I learn from them. And they learn from me.
My network expands with each guest. And, I enjoy connecting people. I've been able to introduce different guests to one another and then they go on to collaborate with each other. And that's pretty cool!
► How does your podcasting process look like?
My process is pretty simple. A USB mic, a MacBook Pro with GarageBand, and Zoom to record interviews.
To find guests, I started with people I knew. And then I asked them who they knew that might be a good fit for the show. Word of mouth referrals have provided me most of my guests. However, I have found great guests on Facebook groups dedicated to finding podcast guests. And occasionally, a guesting service will reach out to recommend someone to be on my show. I've also just stumbled across people on Instagram that I thought would make a great guest and simply DMed them with an offer to be on the show. Sometimes, you just have to have the cojones to ask. You never know. They might just say yes.
Once the interview is complete, I upload the mp4 file into GarageBand for editing. Once the editing is done, I'll make a show page for the episode on TheGetFoxyShow.com. Then, I'll upload the episode to my audio host. And voila, a show is born!
► How do you market your show?
I still have a lot to learn regarding marketing. Currently listeners can find The Get Foxy Show on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Deezer, Stitcher, TuneIn, Spotify, Pandora, iHeart Radio, and Amazon Music. I also post links to each episode on my own Facebook page and various podcast promotion groups.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
One of the big things I learned as a fledgling podcaster: if you decide to join a podcast network, read the contract throughly. Make certain that you're not signing the ownership of your show away to someone else. You put in the work. So, make sure you own your brand!
