► Tell us about you and your podcast
My background is in the trades in building construction. I owned and sold that company and ventured into real estate. After several years discovered that in order to actually make any money I had to go into commercial real estate.
My podcast is about interviewing great guests and asking them how they did it, what they would do differently and what led to their success. Also I interview everyone from industry partners such as lenders, brokers, investors, data analysts and more to get a comprehensive view of the markets today.
My listeners are business owners, passive investors, and other investors looking to grow their portfolios.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started this podcast to connect with others in the Commercial Real Estate (CRE) industry and to grow my status as an industry thought leader. I did listen to a lot of podcasts, but as a daily show I have begun to listen to them less as hosting a daily CRE show is a lot of work. There are a couple I still tune into occasionally.
I launched this podcast on Dec 1st 2020 and have published a daily episode ever since.
I prelaunched by recording nearly 60 eps beforehand. I started around the 2nd week of October 2020 and recorded 60 eps by Dec 1st launch time.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
As stated above, this is a daily show. I have great systems in place that allow me to record only, and the rest of the backend team makes sure that it gets handled.
My podcast is part of my day job. This allows me to build my network and buy CRE. It's all part of the plan.
I do self fund, and will spend around 60k this year on marketing and production.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I would love to be sponsored and it is on my 2022 goals list. No revenue as of yet.
I have about 10-12k downloads per month right now, aiming to move that closer to 100k by year end with a lot of promotion and planning.
As stated earlier, it benefits me by growing my network in leaps and bounds. We closed over 30mm in CRE last year simply bc of my podcast.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
Calendly to book, which dumps into activecampaign, which dumps into a google drive and posts simultaneously all the answer to my guest questions to my calendar for easy reference when jumping on the interview. Some days I will have 8 interviews back to back, so being able to seamlessly switch from one guest to the next is imperative.
I find guests two ways: poach from other shows when they have a guest on I find interesting, and ask each guest for 3 referrals to other guests.
Zoom.
► How do you market your show?
Going forward, all episodes, plus audiograms/youtube video/graphics with quotes etc are posted to social channels. This is a work in progress and we've failed miserably on this front. We have switched hosting platforms 2x now and service providers for production 2x now, which has made tracking difficult. What I do know is that it is close to 49% apple.
I find instagram most useful at the moment.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Get ready to work, especially as a daily show. This will require 10x more effort than you think. Also, if you want to speed network, podcast. You'll never grow a faster network than by podcasting.
