► Tell us about you and your podcast
We're Pete and Howell, two friends who love dissecting politics and government with a healthy dose of sarcasm. Our podcast, Politics & Brose, is like a therapy session, but instead of a couch, we have microphones. We're not experts in everything we discuss but we did work in politics and government, we are basically just two guys sharing our informed opinions and trying to make sense of the chaos. Our listeners are probably people who enjoy politics, but don't take themselves too seriously.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
We started podcasting because, well, why not? We were regularly meeting up for lunch in the Loop in Chicago and found ourselves always talking about our old lives and politics, since people only want to talk about the Cubs or Bears here. We're both podcast enthusiasts, and it seemed like a great way to share our thoughts and opinions with the world. Our initial goal was to create a space where we could discuss politics without getting too worked up and scratch the itch that remains after moving from DC to Chicago. We released our first episode in 2020, and it's been a wild ride ever since. Let's just say the editing process took longer than expected – who knew talking politics could be so time-consuming?
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We release episodes biweekly, and it takes us around a few hours to produce each one. We usually record at night, but we often get delayed or have to postpone b/c...life. We're both fathers in our 40s with multiple kids and we're not exactly podcasting moguls, so we juggle our day jobs with recording and editing. As for funding, we're currently bootstrapping it, which means we're spending our own money on hosting, editing, and marketing. We're not getting rich off this podcast (yet!). We've always maintained this should be fun first and if anything comes of it, great, but we want to be true to who we are.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
Honestly? We gained a lot of laughs and some great discussions. We're still working on getting sponsorships, but we're hopeful that our charming banter will win over some advertisers. Podcasting has helped us develop our communication skills, and we've met some great people along the way. Who knows, maybe one day we'll be podcasting millionaires?
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We use a mix of hardware and software to record and edit our episodes. We use LaunchPad for our hosting and we use Zencaster to record. We have had guests occasionally, a mix of our friends and specialists...but mostly our friends. We prepare for each episode by researching current events and hashing out our opinions. It's a pretty relaxed process, except when we get technical difficulties – then it gets real.
► How do you market your show?
We're still figuring it out! We're active on Twitter, and we try to engage with our listeners. We've got a presence on Apple Podcasts and other platforms, but we're not sure what works best yet. If you have any marketing tips, hit us up!
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Don't be afraid to be yourself, even if you're not perfect (newsflash: nobody is). Podcasting is a journey, and you'll learn as you go. Invest in good recording equipment, and don't be afraid to ask for help. Oh, and have fun – it's supposed to be enjoyable!
► Where can we learn more about you & your podcasts?
You can find us on Apple Podcasts, Podcast Republic, or by searching for "Politics & Brose" online. We don't have a Patreon or donate link yet, but if you want to support us, share our podcast with your friends and family – that's the best support we could ask for. Also, we would love to chat or hear from you, so do reach out!
