► Tell us about you and your podcast
I am Peter Andrisani, my Co-hosts name is Matthew Garber, we are born from Queens, New York, born and raised! The name of our Podcast/Youtube channel is "Take This L Sports." Believe it our not, our Podcast is about Sports! The one thing that I believe that truly makes us special, and apart from the rest is we talk about ALL sports, and we go in depth with all of our discussions and takes. Matthew and I always talked sports, for as long as we've been friends, it's just something we have always done, and hold close to our hearts, because so many people near and dear to us love sports.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
Our show has kind of a funny story, actually. Once Matthew went away to college, our friendship wasn't as strong as it was, but that's expected, life gets in the way of a lot of things! I was at work one night, and Matthew called me to talk about the upcoming NFL Playoffs, and I told him I had an idea about starting a podcast, because why not? I couldn't have talked to a better person, not only does Matthew go to school for production and media, he has access to a professional studio and professional equipment! So after I got out of work that night, we met up, and talked out all the details right then and there. Within a week of talking, which was just before January of 2020, we had our very first video out. It all seemed very surreal, talking about sports has always been a favorite thing to do of ours, but to do it on global platforms, where anybody and everybody can potentially see it, that's incredible. Our initial goals were very plain and simple, just keep pushing content, and be different. Honestly almost a year on now, we still have the same goals. In today's world, where anyone can grab a mic and talk in front of a camera, you are a dime a dozen. You have to find something that separates you from the pack, and once you find that 'something' keep pushing it. That has been our mentality since day 1, and I truly believe it is the best mentality to have, especially if you have fun doing it!
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
With anything else in life, if you love to do something, you will find, and make time to do it. We have always had fun doing our show, and we love doing it, so there is always time to hop on the mic and talk some sports for us! I've always told Matthew, we have been gifted an advantage in starting our show. Who else has had the opportunity to have virtually no Podcasting experience and still have the access to professional equipment, and professional advice like we've had, all without paying for it, (If you don't count Matthew's college tuition) we are truly blessed! Few minor expenses have come along here and there, but nothing that would cause us to call it quits due to lack of funding. We do all of our Marketing, Editing, Hosting, filming, etc. all between the two of us. I am forever grateful for Matthew because he has taught me so much valuable information about editing, media, filming, etc. I truly couldn't ask for a better co-host!
► What do you gain from podcasting?
For us, there has been very little financial gain to this point. Anchor.fm sponsors us, but other than that, sponsors are tough to find when your show is as young as ours is. We are always looking, and always open to sponsors, but that is not what keeps us going. It is not about the money for us. (although we would never say no to some cash!) We want to put a product out there that we could be proud of, that people love, that we could look back on 20 years from now and say, "wow, WE did that!" The prospect of being remembered for something great that we have done, is more than enough payment for us at this point and time. We have met/interviewed/worked with some amazing people, and we have gained some amazing relationships and friendships from our experiences so far, and it's really only the beginning, it's so exciting to think about all the people we could work with as we contiune to expand and grow!
► How does your podcasting process look like?
Oh boy, it was a little bit of a mess at first! Sometimes we would get in the studio and discuss right then and there what we were going to talk about! We have a very goo system going right now that works perfectly for us. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have not been able to utilize the studio, so we use Zoom. We record our episodes over zoom primarily on Sunday's, unless we have a guest, then we try to cater more to their schedule to make it easier for them. I prepare a topic list throughout the course of the week, to monitor all the news in the sports world, and sift through what topics are worth discussing. That is during regular episodes, when we have a guest, the process is a little different, it mostly consists of Matthew and I coming up with talking points and questions we, and our listeners, would like to know about the guest. As many people know, or could imagine, it is quite difficult to get guests on. We contact athletes, and athletes agents, through social media and email. Most of the time, we will not receive an answer, but that is okay! We have come to learn, and accept that we are not going to get every athlete or media personality we inquire about. If it was that easy, everyone would do it! We just keep our eye on the prize, and have a short memory, because it only takes one huge guest to provide you an opportunity of a lifetime.
► How do you market your show?
We are extremely proud to say that you can find our show on mostly every major listening platform out there! (iTunes, Spotify, Google Podcast, etc.) We promote our show though almost every major social media outlet, you can find us on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Tik Tok, and YouTube. We get most of our listeners through iTunes, about 35% of our listeners come from there. But for us, Whether we get 1 play, or 100, from a certain platform, we value them all the same, they all provide us with an oppertunity to grow.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
The first piece of advice I would offer, is make sure you are having fun, the topic you talk about is very enjoyable right? That's why you started a podcast to begin with! I would also say try to be as original as possible, it's extremely tough now to be completely original nowadays, here and there you are going to have an idea that you think is original that someone did ages ago. But try to make your product as different and original as possible, people get bored, they are always looking for something new, and if you offer them something different, it's automatically appealing! There are so many helpful tools out there but Anchor, our sponsor, is definitely one of the easiest to use. Listen Notes is also helpful, it lets us gauge how truly popular your product is. Also, just networking, reaching out, talking to other people that are in the same position as you are, those are the individuals that offer some of the best advice you can get!
