► Tell us about you and your podcast
Hey! We are Andrew, Ross and Amie from "I Read It Online Somewhere" here every week to discuss what we have read online and answer your strange and wonderful questions you probably should have asked your science teachers at school.
Amie did not do this but luckily for her, Andrew and Ross are Science teachers and are here to help!
Each week we will look at an article one of us has read online and then Amie tries to answer some of our questions that have been sent in, if she gets stuck Andrew and Ross are on had to give further explanations!
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
We started the podcast in August 2020. Amie had been asking Ross and Andrew questions that she had over the lockdown and thought that others might have similar thoughts. This led to use discussing if we should make a podcast and then a couple of weeks later we had recorded three episodes! We talked a long time about the format and have changed it over the three seasons as we work out what "works" for us.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Andrew and ross are both full time teachers so can be busy doing their work after school most evenings.
We normally can manage to meet one evening and record an episode or two. We can take about an hour to record an episode and then this can get cut down to around 20mins. Ross and Amie have young children so we have to make sure that they are able to make it in the evenings. Andrew is involved in a number of things in the local community so needs to juggle the schedule to make it.
We normally pay for the use of PODBEAN hosting, this gives us a bit of freedom with the episodes and distribution.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I think we all gain different things from the podcast. Mostly its just about doing something together each week, and this was very important in lockdown but we have decided to keep it going!
As yet we don't have sponsors and still looking, so if you know anyone, get them to drop us an email: ireaditos@gmail.com
► How does your podcasting process look like?
Our process is pretty decent since we are actually miles away from each other: Andrew is up in north west Scotland and Ross and Amie are near Edinburgh.
So we normally do a facetime and record our bits of the podcast separately. Once we have recorded our sections (unless Andrew forgets his part again!) then we put them together and cut out any of the long pauses or bits we think are just us talking too much.
We normally use Garageband to record on and edit, it is very easy to use. We have a group Google account so that we can write a loose script to follow and put the questions in for Amie to answer.
► How do you market your show?
We post a lot of content on Instagram (@ireaditos) and Tiktok as well as mentioning our socials in every episode. This can make it easier to promote the show.
We use Podbean as our host so they are really good at sending it out to all the different places to listen.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
It's not easy, but it is fun!
There is more to podcasting than just talking about stuff. There is a lot of background stuff that goes on and sometimes a lot of content can be cut for time or its just not as good as it sounded in the recording session.
But really what is important is that you "take your audience with you" - when you are close with the other members of the team it can be easy to forget that listeners wont always get your jokes or comments - watch out for that!
