► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is Mick Manhattan and I have been podcasting for 10 years. Currently I host The Scene Snobs with my co-host "The Mad-Man" Casey Plott. Casey has also been podcasting since 2011. We started on a show called Mystery Elephant Podcast together.
The Scene Snobs is a weekly live show we broadcast at 9PM EST on our own channel on The Scene Snobs Network. We are a comedy podcast that covers various absurd topics centered around the entertainment industry.
We actually have a wide base of listeners because we cater to people of all kinds.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
After our previous show was abruptly ended by our producer at the time, I set out to create my own network of shows that cover all different genres and topics. TheSceneSnobs.com Network is the main hub for many shows but it all started with our flagship show The Scene Snobs Podcast. The Scene Snobs was originally a movie review blog that started on January 1, 2013. After our previous podcast ended my vision and goal grew into something more.
The Concept for the network started in 2017 when I went to Casey with the idea. It wasn't until October 6, 2019 that the first episode would air. My goal was for it to always be a live show. In February of 2020 before the quarantine was discussed I launched a Live version of the show on Facebook Live. Now we broadcast The Scene Snobs Podcast every Tuesday night on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, YouTube, and Twitch. All 34 of our other shows on the network are either broadcast Live or recorded broadcast everyday of the wee with at least 3 shows a day.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I personally host or produce 5 shows which are broadcast every week on the channel. I handle the topic research with help from co-hosts. But personally I handle all of the editing, writing, direction, producing, guest booking, and social media for my shows and the entire network.
This is my full time job. It has to be with all of the work that goes into it. I left my day job in May of 2019 and made this and my family the priority. I put some of my savings towards the expenses for equipment and programs I needed to make to work. Every day and night I researched how to do as much as I could at no cost. Once we picked up our first sponsor it helped alleviate a lot of the expenses. Now we have two sponsors and are currently upgrading. But I still cut costs when I can.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
We do have two sponsors, Kimball's Cookies and Manscaped. Our revenue is kind to our cause and that is with thanks to our amazing and supportive listeners. We also have a Patreon channel where our supporters can sign up for $5 a month for perks.
Our first sponsor came at around 1,000 downloads a month. Currently we are at about 1,000 per week which helped in obtaining the support of our second sponsor. I found sponsors by doing the research. What companies were sponsoring like minded shows that fit our narrative and reaching out to them.
Podcasting benefits me because its fulfilling. I'm great at it. I don't mean that as ego. I've worked very hard to be able to do this. I am always evolving. I'm not the same podcast I was 10 years ago, or any year since. I am not even the same podcaster I was when I started The Scene Snobs.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
The tools I use besides the hardware of XLR mics, mixing board, etc. I use Streamyard as my broadcasting and recording program. I edit the video on Filmora 9 and edit the audio on Audacity. I will use Zoom for some guests if its all they know but for the most part I use Streamyard.
I prepare each episode with research and talking with my co-hosts on each show. Communication and the research is the most important factor in my opinion. Know what you are talking about so you can come up with engaging topics. The topics being posted on our social media definitely lure the audience in but it gives us time to get in the mindset a few days before the show. Engaging with the audience on social media is important as well. But no matter how much we prepare, we are adaptable in the moment Live. You need to be, dead air is the worst.
► How do you market your show?
I make it very easy. We are on all platforms of their choosing. TheSceneSnobs.com is our one stop shop to find all of our shows everywhere. We are on all forms of social media with updates multiple times a day. I make it pretty impossible for potential new listeners not to find us. SoundCloud, Spotify, Amazon and iTunes are our most popular sources.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
The advice I would give to new and aspiring podcasters is that they need to clarify within themselves what they are doing this for, is it a business or for fun. That's the most basic breakdown of why a person chooses to do this. If its for fun and you have no expectations or goals to make this more then that then just have fun with it. But if you are starting this as a business venture then firstly, make sure you enjoy doing it and secondly, make sure you do the work because you'll never get anywhere with one post a week about your new podcast and no one will listen. Also, if you don't enjoy doing it with all of the other work it takes, then anyone who listens to an episode will be able to tell.
The most helpful resource is listening to good to great podcasts. Do the research from there and ask questions in forums and groups.
► Where can we learn more about you & your podcasts?
