Your Financial Coach Is Here To Help

►Tell us about you and your podcast

Hey, I'm Stephen Newland and I live in Atlanta, GA with my wife and two puppies, Mackenzie and Maxwell.

The name of my podcast is the "Find Your Money Path Show". The goal of the show is to help make it easier for people to stay on track with money. I mainly cover topics like budgeting, saving, debt and the emotions behind money.

My listeners range from college students to someone in their 50's and 60's who are trying to pay off some debt or get on a budget as they are nearing retirement.

►Why & how did you start this podcast?

Ever since I was five years old, I have fallen asleep to the radio, podcast or music nearly every night of my life. I'm afraid to count just how much audio content that I consume on a daily basis. Safe to say that I'm a big fan of podcasting!

The Find Your Money Path Show was born out of my own lack of confidence in handling money coming out of college. I came out of school with $55k in debt and making just above $40k a year as a financial analyst. I want this content to be helpful to anyone who has a tough time staying on track with money or even identifying what "staying on track" even means.

►How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?

I love this question! My favorite part about podcasting is that all you need is a good idea and a computer or cell phone. People will come back for the content so don't use lack of funds or equipment be what stops you from starting!

I aim to release two episodes a week, typically on Monday's and Thursday's, but since I do have a day job I admittedly don't always hit that mark. Most weeks it is two though. I try to keep my podcasts to 10 minutes or less so it's usually a topic that has come up with one of my financial coaching clients that week. My thought is that if someone is asking me about a topic in a coaching session that there are hundreds more people that are curious about the same thing!

►What do you gain from podcasting?

Podcasting is my way of building value with my audience. I don't advertise (yet) and don't have any sponsorships (although would be open to it). My theory is that if I can give good value through free content that I will create fans of my Find Your Money Path brand.

It also keeps me honest on my facts and what's new in the financial coaching industry.

►How does your podcasting process look like?

I typically record through a lapel mic that I bought from Amazon. Honestly, I'm pretty sure it cost me less than $20. I then edit it using iMovie (yes, iMovie). I'm just so familiar with the user interface that it just works for me.

I proactively reach out to guests that I think would add value to my clients. For example, I was doing a series on how to save money on travel/vacations so I reached out to my personal travel agent. I typically use Zoom to interview, which is a great free resource.

►How do you market your show?

Right now, I primarily market through my website, my own personal social media and Anchor. You know what's also interesting is that I put a link in my e-mail signature linking directly to iTunes and Google Play. This has seemed to work well in at least getting some initial interest - it's such a good marketing tool. Think about how many e-mails we send every day!

As of right now, about 75% of my listeners come through iTunes. I'm hoping to spread that out some more in the coming months.

►What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?

Just start! Seriously, your first episode won't be the best one or even near it, but it's moving you forward more than not recording and posting will ever do. If you're concerned about it, then record a few and send it out to some friends. Send it to the friends that will be honest with you though, not the ones who will just tell you what you want to hear.

You may realize as you start posting that your audience may want you to focus on topics that you initially didn't think about. Listen to the market!
