►Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is Rob Maurer and I host the Tesla Daily podcast. This is a daily tech news and investing podcast focused on the shift towards autonomous electric transportation and how Tesla is positioned in this space. I write, produce, edit, and record the show myself each morning before I leave for my unrelated full time job. I do not advertise on my podcast and am 100% funded by donations from listeners which are currently at $565/mo.
►Why & how did you start this podcast?
In the mainstream media, Tesla is often misreported on. I wanted to bring an authentic, reliable, and trusted voice into the media to help make sense of Tesla news. I began in August, 2017. I generated the idea and published my first episode in less than 2 weeks and have since published almost 150 episodes.
►How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
It is difficult to find time, but I am naturally interested in following Tesla and already dedicated a lot of time to the subject before starting the podcast. I would estimate that I spend at least 3 hours per day on the podcast in addition to my unrelated full time job. It is funded by listeners through Patreon. I spend $30-$40 per month at the moment on hosting and marketing, and I publish every weekday. Over time, I may use my funding to purchase more marketing to grow the listener base.
►What do you gain from podcasting?
I make about $520/mo in profit at the moment. This only comes out to about $8/hour, but I am developing other skills. I am improving my speaking as well as learning how to operate what is becoming a small business. I am also growing my network through my listener base which has already lead to interesting opportunities. I have over 50,000 downloads per month.
►How does your podcasting process look like?
I record on a Rode NT1-A microphone into a Tascam interface. I use GarageBand on my Macbook Air and host with Libsyn, and publish to my WordPress site. I interview on Skype with multi-track recording software I bought for $30. I find guests on Twitter and other online communities.
►How do you market your show?
I have paid for some advertising on Twitter and the rest of my growth has come through sharing content with online Tesla communities (Reddit, Tesla forums, etc.). I have also appeared on a couple other podcasts with sizeable listener bases.
I chose to advertise on Twitter to build credibility for my account because Twitter seems to be the best way to connect with prominent potential interviewees. Rather than focusing on gaining listeners, I wanted to gain follows to appear more reputable when reaching out to potential interviewees and show them there would be value for them appearing on my podcast.

Stay consistent, be authentic, don't give up.
