Growth Marketing Toolbox
Landing Page School Podcast
►Tell us about you and your podcast
Hi, I'm Nicholas, and I have 2 marketing podcasts. The first one is called Growth Marketing Toolbox and it's all about helping marketers find the best marketing tools and technology.
The second one is brand new and it's called the Landing Page School Podcast, and it's about helping you turn more website visitors into leads and customers using landing pages, A/B testing, and conversion optimization.
►Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started Growth Marketing Toolbox over 2 years ago because I noticed there were a lot of marketing podcasts that talked about tactics, but very few covered the tools you should use to implement them. My initial goals were to just get 1 episode out a week and not to worry too much about the numbers.
It took me forever to launch because I wanted everything to be perfect. But eventually I just decided to launch with something rather than keep waiting. It was the best decision I made. Just ship something!
►How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I try to release 1 new episode every week, usually on a Monday or Tuesday. I view my podcast as part of my job, as it sometimes leads to new connections and business opportunities, since I run a marketing consultancy.
It takes about 30 minutes of prep time for each episode, researching questions, setting up the interviews, etc. Then, the recording time takes about 45 minutes. And my wife and business partner does an amazing job editing the episodes. That takes about 30 minutes. Lastly, it takes about 30 minutes publishing and sharing the episodes online.
►What do you gain from podcasting?
I don't take sponsorships at the moment, because I want to make sure all the tools I recommend are authentic, and only mentioned because I believe in them, not because I'm getting paid. However, as the show gets bigger and takes up more of my time, I will obviously have to revisit this decision in the future. For now though, I like the freedom of not having any sponsorships and choosing what I can say. I'm not an affiliate for any of the tools I mention either. I only share the tools I use and really believe in.
►How does your podcasting process look like?
I use an ATR2100 mic. To record interviews, I use Skype and Audio Hijack on my Macbook Pro. The editing is done in Audacity. Hosting is on Libsyn, and then I use a cool podcast widget called Smart Podcast Player on my site.
In the early days, I reached out to the companies that make the marketing tools I use, and asked for interviews. Many said yes. And these days, many folks reach out to me, so booking guests has become much easier.
I always send the questions to my guests in advance. I love to set them up for success. I am not a fan of surprises on the air.
►How do you market your show?
I haven't done as much promotion as I should. Twitter and Facebook posts of course for each new episode. For Landing Page School Podcast, I also email it to my list each week. This is an area I really plan on focusing on this year.
►What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Just get started. You'll never have the "perfect" setup. The quicker you get through your first episode, the easier everything else becomes. Also, I recall someone saying you have about 100 hours of bad audio in you that you need to get out. Listening to my early episodes, this is so true! Just get through it and eventually you'll find a cadence that works for you.
