The Language of Bromance: Comedy Podcast Featured on Smodcast SmodCo Pod U and BBC Radio
►Tell us about you and your podcast
Shawn, with co-host Richard, star in the "Language of Bromance Comedy Podcast". Shawn is also the co-host of the Podcastica Podcast "Strange Indeed". The first episode was released on June 21st, 2014. Since then, the guys have released an episode every Sunday for 180+ straight weeks. Each week the content they produce grows stronger.
Some annual episodes are “Hall LOB” which discusses Comic Con, “Brolloween” which comes out the week of Halloween, “Bro Huddle” at the end of the year to prep for the upcoming year of entertainment, and all episodes that end in 3 or 8 the “Bros become Foes” and have a draft episode. The guys thought a bit of competition would be fun, so they created the Draft episode. Draft episodes are NFL-style drafts of 7 rounds where the guys flip flop picks on a specific topic. Past topics include: Villain draft, Zombie Apocalypse Draft, Scary Moment Draft, and most recently, the Thankful for Stuff draft.
Being featured as a SmodCo PodU podcast in February was one of the Language of Bromance’s achievements for 2016.
The Language of Bromance is the best example of an Audial Voyeurism podcast, giving listeners the opportunity to tune into a conversation that two friends would have with or without mics. Richard and Shawn are both extremely proud of this show, and they hope you enjoy the Bromance.
►Why & how did you start this podcast?
Language of Bromance started because a friendship was slowly disappearing. Richard and Shawn had been friends for close to 10 years but their changing lives caused phone calls to become less and less. So in 2014 Shawn took the idea of the two friends creating a podcast and made it happen.
►How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Lots of planning on ensuring we have time to release a show every Sunday. We pay for website hosting, podcast file hosting, equipment, and ads all through self funding.
►What do you gain from podcasting?
We have a couple Sponsors and Ads. First ad came from a headphone company.
►How does your podcasting process look like?
First we find show topics (stories on reddit, personal experience stories, have on a guest for interview or to join in the conversation). If the episode is set to end in a 3 or 8 (Example: Episode 43 and Episode 78), we prep for a draft episode by adding the show idea to a Trello board so ideas do not get lost (if the idea is a story we post the link to the story).
We create the show schedule at the start of the month (schedule what the next four shows will be at the start of the month to avoid not having a topic). If show topics become more pertinent or timely they will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The topics are reviewed and notes are taken by Shawn and Richard (this is a rough outline of points or jokes to make). Shawn and Richard then meet over Skype and record the episode. We always make sure to record a backup file using Call Recorder. Richard finally uploads his audio to Google Drive for editing.
The Language of Bromance releases an episode on Sundays ranging from 45 mins to an 1 hour 30 mins (This is not a specific duration range but an average duration). Each episode is hosted through Libsyn and featured on The Language of Bromance Website (LanguageofBromance.com) and Podbros Website (Podbros.com).
The Tuesday after releasing a new episode an email will be sent to the Language of Bromance email list. The email will contain a link and description to the newest released episode. This is a way to keep contact with listeners on the email list reminding them of the newest email. Once we have finished editing and releasing an episode I login to MailChimp and use the MailChimp weekly email template to schedule to send the email the Tuesday after the released episode.
