►Tell us about you and your podcast

My name is Jonathan Rosario, I am Puerto Rican from Philadelphia. After joining the United States Marine Corps at 19 and getting stationed in San Diego I decided to get out of the Marines and stay on the West Coast. I started a podcast called “Limelight Highlight” to highlight groups, organizations, and individuals for the positive impacts they are making in their surroundings. So far my listeners consists of people that I have personally met and many I have yet to meet.

►Why & how did you start this podcast?

I chose to do a podcast because of all the other podcasts I enjoy listening to. They keep me motivated, educated and interested in various topics. In today’s political and social media climate, you mostly hear about all negative feedback from the news or just ramdom posts on social media. My initial goal is to start focusing on the positive things going on and getting people interested on how they can get involved and make a positive impact on their surroundings. I started my podcast towards the end of February 2018. It took me a couple days to release my first episode once I decided that this is the path i want to take.

►How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?

Ideally i would love to release an episode every two weeks. So far I’ve only been able to do an episode once a month due to finding people who are making a difference and finding the time to interview them. A typical episode after recording takes about a couple hours to edit and produce. Podcasting is something I truly enjoy so if I can find time to sit on a couch and watch tv while having a job I can prioritize my time to finding another guest and recording an episode. I fund the podcast myself. Right now I’m using Spreaker as my host sight and that costs me about $20 a month and i spent a good amount of money on the rest of my equipment. I do fund the podcast myself, as well as my own marketing and editing.

►What do you gain from podcasting?

I would love to take sponsorship but none have approached me about sponsoring anything yet. I’m still super new to the podcasting world so I’m not sure how to even get a sponsor but so far I average about 80-100 downloads a month. Podcasting benefits me by giving me a sense of purpose. Many people go through their lives not knowing or trying to figure out what they want to do in life. I am fortunate enough to have found a platform that I can use to speak my mind uninterrupted and freely with someone who is spreading a message of positivity. I honestly don’t get anything besides a sense of fulfillment through this podcast.

►How does your podcasting process look like?

I purchased some condeser mics along with mic stands that clamp to a desk on ebay. Each ranging from $20-$30. I record using a Behringer audio interface and a MacBook Pro. I use GarageBand for recording, editing and producing. My guests are people that I have previously known or complete strangers introduced to me by friends of mine. I honestly don’t do much preparation for my podcast. As soon as a guest comes in we go straight to talking. All my guests have been on my podcast in person, I feel as if it makes the conversation more genuine.

►How do you market your show?

My listeners have found my show through Facebook, instagram, twitter, and me getting the word out. So far 60.36% of my listeners are utilizing Apple Core Medi, 11.80% are using the Spreaker website. 6.01% utilizes iTunes, 5.79% use Stitcher, 2.90% use iHeart Radio. The rest use a multitude of different platforms. I find instagram to be most useful for when I market my podcast.

►What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?

If you have an idea make it a reality. Utilize YouTube for learning how to make a podcast. Don’t worry too much on perfecting a podcast it doesn’t have to be perfect. I try to be as transparent as possible for my audience so they know they are growing with me while I still his speed bumps and stumble over my words I still have listeners and not all of the feedback will be positive but nothing in life really is. Do not let that keep you from doing what you enjoy. I can’t think of any specific links to any videos because I’ve watched so many but a simple search will lead you to a ton of information.
