►Tell us about you and your podcast
Shawn "Chia Pet" Seabaugh, Ordained by the Church of Latter-Day Dude, and Kayak Fishing Expert.
Kayak Flyer is where we have long form discussion with the "Craft Brewers" of the fishing industry and interesting conversations with friends about fishing in Missouri and beyond. We might ramble or get off topic, but you are sure to hear of a product or place you want to fish.
►Why & how did you start this podcast?
I work in marketing and communications, but I never get to go back to my first love of Radio. I enjoy a lot of different podcasts and meeting new people. Kayak Flyer gives me the opportunity to start a bar conversation with "So, what do you do for a living?"
Learn new things and meet new people as I take a 45 minute conversation with interesting folks that is mostly about fishing.
The podcast is rather new and we started on a free site, it was not long to realize I needed to make the change to a hosting platform that is allows for more control, I also made the jump and moved from a phone to an actual recorder and decent microphones.
►How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I spend a few hours a week working on the podcast. I pay for everything out of my pocket, but one of the companies that has been on the show has helped me out by sending me some goodies. I don't ask for products, and don't promote based on what I get. That being said, feel free to send me some cash or merch! This is a good time for me but my wife would like it more if it paid!
►What do you gain from podcasting?
Other than a few soft plastics, I have gained community and the opportunity to meet and talk to some pretty cool folks. I would be a lot happier if I had a handful of products or sponsorship dollars to keep the cast going, but for now we are just chugging along. We will see what happens by 2020.
►How does your podcasting process look like?
I use a Zoom h4n, and an small computer for Skype. I am getting ready to build a Raspberry Pi system for editing and Skype as it seems to be an effective way to achieve my goal for less. I have a few cheap microphones and it shows. I am always looking to upgrade. The mics and cords were the only things I purchased new as I am on a budget with getting this going. I do have a few of the cheaper action cameras that I have used for my Youtube Channel (KayakFlyer) and often take advantage of the equipment other friends have to help offset price. I am looking to by a small DJI Spark or Mavic, so if you want to donate, that would be GREAT!
►How do you market your show?
I really do not like what Facebook (Kayak Flyer Podcast) has become with all the trolling and hate. I am using it via my Instagram (Kayak Flyer), other than that I am on Youtube at Kayak Flyer, and [email protected]. I simply# the crap out of everything I can think of and try to gain followers. I do ask those that come on the show for stickers or small items to give out as prizes, but that has yet to happen. I have been averaging 50 new listens in the first week of a show being dropped and last week had over 50 in the first 24 hours. I ask those on the show to share it as well. After all, if we are talking about your product, you need to get it out there too.
►What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Listen to my show. I am new to this. I was on a morning top 40 zoo college show in a medium market for several years. I do my best to maintain FCC clean content, but that is not always the case. I cuss, drink and fondly remember smoking. I am a hippy at heart, but I need money and gear to travel and fish.
