►Tell us about you and your podcast

I am Volker Ballueder, and I have been writing about all sorts of things on my blog for over 10 years. One passion of mine is personal development, I wrote a book on productivity, and decided to launch a podcast instead of writing another column.

So Stories of Success is all about successful Europeans or successful people in Europe, telling us how they got successful, why, e.g. background, upbringing, habits etc. The episodes are published on average every 10 days and are about 60 minutes long.

The idea is to uncover hidden tips and tricks for the listeners to become more successful. From season 2 (H2/2018) I experiment with topics and different formats. Stay tuned. My listeners are anyone 16+ I'd say who wants to learn more about habits of successful people.

►Why & how did you start this podcast?

I have been listening to podcast and 'radio shows' since I was a kid. So instead of writing another blog column, I decided on a podcast format. It only took me a couple of weeks from my first recording to launch. It is so much fun!

►How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?

Funding isn't difficult. A friend helped me set up and I got all equipment for under £300. You don't need a lot of stuff: Skype recorder, Yeti microphone and a Zoom recorder with two small microphones. Just make sure you have a good laptop that supports Audacity; you can find free tunes too.

Since I don't have a day job but consult, I easily carve out the time. However, often I record after hours or evenings via Skype.

►What do you gain from podcasting?

I don't make money of it yet. The download figures aren't big enough, and it is more difficult in Europe to get to the 'magic download numbers'. But it is on the cards of course; next I launch more content around the podcast (some do a manifesto), and will try to run meet-ups or seminars.

I am not sure how it benefits me. It is like anything, it draws attention to you but also it is just a lot of FUN!

►How does your podcasting process look like?

I usually use Zoom or Skype to record or my Zoom recorder for face to face recordings. My guests are all recommendations, starting within my own network. I prepare each episode with a short intro and then hope for an engaging conversation around topics of success.

►How do you market your show?

I mainly market my show via podcast outlets, social media (Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn). Most listeners come via iTunes or WOM.

►What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?

Go and do it. It is easy to do, try things out and don't hesitate to ask others for help and advice. There is loads of advice out there, like blogs etc., but essentially it is easy: find a topic, and then go for it.
