► Tell us about you and your podcast
I am Scott and I am the host of a very unique podcast!
The You Run Podcast is a horror movie review show with a twist... The listeners run the show. They select the movies each week, offer their 3 word reviews and facts. They even score the movies. I welcome people to reach out to me on every social media platform to ask questions that I will answer on the show. I even have a call in section where people can leave voicemails I will play on the air.
I have created something that is not juts mine it belongs to everyone who listens and gets involved.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I have watched and loved horror movies for years. I wanted an outlet for my passion but never really found what I was looking for. It was originally my wife who suggested a podcast. I started to listen to other shows and see what was already being done with the goal to be unique and different.
After struggling with a concept for the show I made the leap and recorder my first few episodes. To my surprise i got a really good reception and had people messaging me across social media requesting movies and asking questions.
Then it hit me, I was going to create something where others, not only me could voice their opinions on the movie and even pick what movie that was. So this is when the you run podcast was born.
The show has changed and improved as I progressed adding guests and most recently guest co hosts that change each week. We have a quiz that the co host takes on and general fun and games. But the soul of the show is and will always be the show that the listeners run.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I release weekly episodes in seasons of 10 with a few weeks break between each season. This gives me time to rest and bring something fresh and new. The episode production started really easily, recording from my phone 25-30 minute episodes with no editing... That has changed now with episodes running for 1-1.5 hrs with lots of edits.
As I record with Guest co hosts each week the show can be quite time consuming booking the guests and then recording at times that fit their schedule but it has just become part of my daily life now (Late night editing is not uncommon).
The podcast is completely funded by me and I look at it as an expensive hobby. With a family I am not spending lots of money at weekends going out and even if I could I probably wouldn't. I am my happiest watching and reviewing horror movies and even though it takes up 30 hrs a week i wouldn't change it.
This is my passion and luckily one i share with my wife who often helps with editing and ideas for the show.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I don't take any sponsorship for the show, I had a period early on when I partnered with a company but the financial benefit was not worth the air time on the show. I know as a podcast listener I will often skip the ads and I felt that having them took away from the show and broke the flow of the episode.
I think what I get from the show is so much better than any sponsorship money. Throughout the run of the show I have met and interviewed some incredible people, some of which I would now consider close friends.
The podcast for me is not about how big its going to get or how many listeners I have each week or month its about building a community where people can voice their opinions on a movie, be part of something without having to start their own show.
If there was a show like mine when I was looking at starting I probably wouldn't have started at all juts used that show as my outlet.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
The process is fairly simple but does happen over quite a long period of time. Around 3 weeks before the episode is released I put up the movie poll on Instagram where people can vote for the movie that would like reviewed. Guests are booked months in advance and these are a mixture of people from all walks of life that I approach as I feel that will add something to she show.
Once the guest and the movie are in place I arrange a recording time and record the episode remotely using Zoom. Following the interview I will use audacity to edit the episode and our intro music and other sound bites before final listen and review.
The episodes are all recorded and ready to go around 7 days before release date.
► How do you market your show?
Honestly wherever I can... I know this sounds like a bit of a silly answer but it is literally wherever I have an opportunity... Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok in conversation with friends or strangers, or anyone for that matter...
If I am being hones with myself I think that most of my listeners are through word of mouth, the listeners I have to the show are fantastic and they share the show and talk to other people. They really are my marketing department!
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Don't listen to advice from other people. This is my advice, if you have an idea or a concept that you want to share just do it. Find a platform that works for you, whether that is a free one or one you want to pay for, it really doesn't matter. What matters is your passion for something that makes you want to release a show.
As for software to edit on this can be as complicated or as simple as you want it to be look around for what is right for you. I will see people saying you need the best mic, you need this paid editing software and you need to distribute here etc etc.
The truth is you don't need any of that, you need a passion for you subject, a way of recording (Even a phone is fine) and somewhere to distribute the show and that is it.
Don't wait till you get everything right, just start talking and be yourself.
