► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is Will, and together with my wife, Linda, we created the Magnetic Mismatch Podcast.
Our show is focused on having real, meaningful and oftentimes hilarious conversations about all things relationships!
Each episode is centered around a specific topic where we share our own unique stories, experiences and thoughts in a format where we want our listeners to feel like they’re just hanging out with their friends over coffee. At the end of each podcast, we reflect on our takeaways and lessons learned from our discussions.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
OUR WHY
We started our own podcast with 2 main goals in mind:
First, we wanted to have a project that we could share together that would be fun and allow us to spend more quality time with each other.
We are both working professionals and business owners, so we keep pretty busy during the week and by the end of the workday we’re usually exhausted. We realized that if we wanted to strengthen and grow our marriage, we would have to deliberately carve out time each week that was dedicated just for us.
Another major reason we decided to start our podcast is because we feel a deep burning need to share our journey, both the good and the bad, so that hopefully someone listening can use what we’ve learned to improve and grow their own relationships as well whether that be with their spouse, family, friends or people in general.
Finally, we want to openly and honestly talk about the mistakes we’ve made, and the lessons we’ve learned that have made us stronger. We also want to celebrate our victories together with a community of people who understand and relate to our conversations.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We release new episodes every Thursday. Every weekend, we devote about a few hours to brainstorming topics, recording, and producing an episode.
Since this is a passion project for us, it is entirely bootstrapped. We have been growing our podcast organically so we haven't paid for any marketing.
However, as the show continues to grow and gain popularity we may consider it in the future.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
We really enjoy podcasting because it gives us a space to channel our creative energies through voicing our thoughts and opinions that allows us to be heard.
It has been an amazing journey so far and we've grown a lot both as individuals and as a married couple. We have both become better communicators, learned to break out of our comfort zone, and stay disciplined and consistent to a task.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We decided to use a video podcast format for our show, so it's available both on YouTube and all audio platforms.
Our creative process usually starts with brainstorming topic ideas. Most of these ideas are inspired by things happening in our own lives or things we've heard and seen throughout the week as we go about our days.
After we settle on a topic, we'll usually develop a rough outline of things we want to talk about in the episode. Since we want to keep our conversations as natural and organic as possible, we don't go over any of the details of any talking point.
Finally, we just jump in and start recording. Thankfully, we usually only need 1 take to complete an episode. I think it's because we are just being ourselves and just having a conversation like we normally would even without a microphone.
We do very minimal editing and currently use Adobe Premiere Pro.
► How do you market your show?
Currently, we are only using social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook to promote our show (non-paid).
We also list our podcast on as many podcast directories as possible for greater exposure.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Our best advice for new or aspiring podcasters is to really spend some time thinking about WHY you want to podcast in the first place and clearly DEFINE what a successful podcast means to you.
We also dealt with a lot of mindset obstacles like self doubt, fear of being judged or sounding weird/stupid, what if no one listens, etc. To save yourself from all of that, we would advise someone that the best thing to do is to just START! Like everything else in life, experience will be your best teacher. It's so easy to get paralyzed by information overload or worried about getting everything perfect, so just start by taking 1 step even if it's a baby step!
