► Tell us about you and your podcast
I started the Retro Podcast Massacre as a way of connecting with horror fans, and talking about horror gems that sometimes get overlooked.
But after 25 episodes, I decided to branch out. I love stories - especially the stories on how films are made and the drama behind the drama. The Big Screen Biograph focusses on the making of my favourite films with my favourite stars and film makers.
Every episode is like a story, with music and movie clips, humour and tears.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I had just emigrated to New Zealand when I started podcasting - it's a nice way to stay in touch with old friends and a great way to make new ones. I love talking to people who listen in, and love to hear their ideas.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Both are really difficult! I try to fit in podcasting around a demanding job. As for the cost - this is a budget operation! I try to make the podcast sound great with copious use of music and clips but I'm sure alert listeners will be able to pick up the sounds of birds chirping and cats meowing. Fortunately listeners are either very forgiving (or they love that stuff).
► What do you gain from podcasting?
Oh how adorable.
No. No-one would pay me for this stuff and I make not a penny from it! Both of my podcasts are just for fun and friendship, and I think people who listen realise that.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
Basically the process starts with me obsessing over and actor, director, writer or producer. I'll watch and re-watch their movies and then start writing.
Typically I'll also start recording/editing/producing right away as well because my enthusiasm carries me away. Consequently there's a lot of re-work. Oftentimes I'll re-do the same episode about three times over before I'm happy with it.
Consequently it takes about 3 weeks to make an episode.
► How do you market your show?
I suck at marketing. Basically it all comes down to pleading with listeners to spread the word.
I find that people who like the show REALLY like the show and I get lovely feedback from my new friends, but getting the word out there? So difficult.
What I'm saying is, that if you are reading this RIGHT NOW then please in the name of all that is holy, tell your friends, email your local representative and FFS drop a review on iTunes.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Make the show you want to hear and [very bad word] everyone else. If you compromise, you'll end up hating your own show.
Don't sweat the mistakes. People love you for them.
If you're not building an audience, don't be afraid to try a different approach.
