► Tell us about you and your podcast
I am a survivor of the Community of Jesus, a high-control religious group in Orleans, MA. I co-founded Rock Harbor Truth with a fellow survivor, a non-profit organization formed to educate and support cult survivors. We work to educate the public about high control, coercive groups, support and amplify survivors' voices through truth-telling and advocate for system changes. This podcast is part of our mission to enable survivors to share their stories. To date our podcast is about cult survivors sharing their stories, not just of their time inside a cult, put their lives afterwards. Media has been very focused on parts of the cult I grew up in, but those articles don't tell the full story of who we are. Listeners are other survivors, their family and friends, townspeople from the towns where these cults are located, and people who consume true crime and cult media.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
The Cult on the Cape began just a few months ago. It was to be just a limited series about 3 cult survivors who wrote books about their lives. Doing a podcast seemed to be a great venue for having a discussion with all three at once. But when other survivors started reaching out, wanting to tell their stories, the Cult on the Cape took shape as a survivor-led podcast. Our goal now is to continue this story-telling and also interview experts in cults and mental health to provide some concrete resources for survivors. Our first episode aired on November 17, 2025. I started working on the first episode in August so it took several months. Weirdly, I had never listened to a podcast prior to launching The Cult on the Cape and since the launch I've only listened to a few others.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Our episodes are released weekly, at 6 am on Tuesdays. I'm still learning so it probably takes me longer than most, but I usually have a 30-minute chat with a guest before we record, then up to 2 hours recording, then probably 3 hours editing. Plus I create clips and post those on our social media platforms. I work on episodes evenings and weekends. I pay for Zoom and one editing platform. Sometimes I pay to boost a post on social media. But I don't spend much and I do fund it myself.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I would very much love to have a sponsor or two. We would like to raise money to help survivors with the podcast. I have no idea how to get a sponsor and we do need more downloads. Honestly, as a cult-survivor, I gain tremendous fulfillment in enabling people to share their stories and assist in facilitating the healing journey for all of us.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I record with guests whenever they are available and right now have a library of recordings still to edit and air. Our guests to date are finding us, but I do reach out to cult experts and mental health professionals and ask if they will be a guest. I arrange a short zoom a week or so before we record as just a "get to know you" Then I record via Zoom. I edit using AudioMass and MixPad.
► How do you market your show?
Our podcast is on iTunes, Spotify and Amazon. We have a small newsletter and use social media to market the podcast. We are trying geofencing now. None of the marketing platforms seem to expand the reach the way we would like to.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
I think that having decent equipment is important. The biggest learning for me what how time consuming the process is. Talking to other podcasters has really been the most helpful to me.
► Where can we learn more about you & your podcasts?
You can follow us on Facebook, IG and TikTok. We have pages for both Rock Harbor Truth and The Cult on the Cape. Our podcast episodes are also located on our website at www.rockharbortruth.org.
