► Tell us about you and your podcast
The Post Shift Podcast started out as a way to pass on knowledge to the next generation of hospitality workers coming through the ranks. During the pandemic, it was my goal to do more interviews to connect the right people with operators and help guide them during the difficult time our industry faced. I do an episode once a week about advice and personal struggles and then an interview once a week with fellow hospitality entrepreneurs. My listener-ship is varied from young new industry people to older operators.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I think it was a little cathartic to start, explaining and transferring my hospitality entrepreneur life and experience to my followers. I started in Jan 2019, I saw a few hospitality podcasts but not my style, a mix of personal advice with interviewees that align with my goals and feelings towards the industry.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I do 2 episodes a week, a short 10 minute episode where I give my weekly take on things and then a longer interview with someone on Fridays. I am self funded, recorded and edited myself.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
It's only been in the last 6 months that I have considered sponsorship, it took me a long time to not see this as a value add to my consulting business. But I had a small company come to me and ask to sponsor it with a few bucks as well my other content creation (videos and cocktail tutorials), it's more of a validation of what I am doing over the money, for me it's not about the money. I do it because I learn as much as the value I bring to the listeners.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I have a classic Behringer Podcast Setup but most of my podcasts start out as live streams through Restream, then I scrap the audio and post. I believe that individuals will absorb information how they feel comfortable, so I try and get rid of the barriers of entry, whether that is video on multiple platforms or audio, just try and make it as easy as possible. I have never pre-interviewed, I prefer it to be raw as possible and let the guest feel as comfortable as possible.
► How do you market your show?
I focus heavily on social media to market the podcast with links again to everything from video to audio. I also post it as a blog on my website.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
A couple of things
- Quality is Subjective, don't overdo your audio thinking you are making it "perfect"
- The worst someone is going to say is no, ask them to be a guest
- Be yourself, everyone else is taken
- Just start, it's the hardest thing to do is just get started
