► Tell us about you and your podcast
I'm a fulltime educator, I love it, I live for it. So I took my passion for learning and education and combined it with my passion for history. I figure most people have had a positive experience growing up with the mythologies that still very much influence popular media and culture. Everyone knows a little something about a particular god, or a story from a certain culture etc. so my listeners are those that wish to know more about the history of the legends they love and to also uncover their hidden meanings.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I do this podcast because I enjoy both learning and teaching, doing a podcast is the best of both worlds. The "Understanding" in the title is progressive in the fact I am also learning as the podcasts continue. It is my promise that in my capacity of being an educator that I will never stop learning myself. It is the goal of this podcast to preserve and celebrate global mythologies, while also delving deep into their history and meaning.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I generally finish episodes in 2-4 weeks. The script is understandably the longest part and I do not hasten looking and applying my sources. I don't generally have time to do my podcasts but it is a labor of love, so I find time whenever I can.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I'm not in this for the money. I am in it for the satisfaction I get for entertaining and educating people. I have not had a sponsor yet, the only thing I want out of a sponsor is to diffuse my podcast so more people can enjoy it.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I generally start with a topic, as I am writing this I am into season 2 which is all about mythemes. The topic pretty much chooses itself based on the flow and topic of the last episode however. Next comes script writing where I look for stories that match the theme I am going for, I put a lot of effort into finding stories people haven't heard of before. Next comes the research, the skulking through all the modern sources to help me make an argument that sticks. From there, it is time to record. I have a nice home studio with pretty good gear also. I edit in music and sound effects to make for a nice listening experience - all of which is done on Adobe Audition. Then, hey presto all done.
► How do you market your show?
I have a presence on Twitter and Instagram, so I generally promote there. I'd say most my listeners are on Spotify but the podcast itself is on all popular hosting websites.
Social media works the best to contact me, I have made a lot of friends on SM and we all help each other out.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Your first podcast is gonna suck, but that doesn't mean it isn't going to be of quality. It is an oxymoron but hear me out, the first step is the hardest and you are only going to get better as you continue along. Keep working at it, I am no where near perfect but I have what matters, the spark, the passion. Find it in yourself, hold it tight.
