► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is Jeff Revilla and I host the Stuff I Never Knew Trivia Game Show Podcast. Each week players from around the world call in and battle it out over 3 rounds of trivia. The whole show happens live and we play anything from trivia games, word play, and some just plain silly games. I just recorded my 100th episode at the first ever Indie Pods United. I have listeners from all over the world but my listenership is primarily focused in the United States, Canada, and Australia, India and the U.K.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started this show in 2015 after tossing around a few ideas. Initially the podcast was going to be themed each week. This is why the name of the show is called "Stuff I Never Knew". Each each week the name of the show would be based on the topic. For example, Stuff I Never Knew about Apples or Stuff I Never Knew about Canada. If you go back to the early episodes you will see I gave it a fair run, but quickly ran out of topics to write 60+ questions per week.
Another thing that happened that made my podcast possible at the beginning was the launch of a live streaming platform called Blab. This enabled me to go live and instantly have 30-40 people watching the show. I used to run the show with 8 people, but after blab folded that almost became impossible.
I still live stream my show, and almost all of my guests now are other podcasters. The goal is to promote other podcasts while they play trivia. It is a win win for both shows. I need warm bodies to fill seats and play trivia and podcasters need an audience to promote their show! I firmly believe that a rising tide lifts all ships!
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
When I am in the middle of running a season, I will release an episode every week. Each episode takes about 8 hours per week to produce from booking guests, writing questions, recording, editing, posting and social media. I do it all in my spare time and all out of pocket. I just recorded my 100th episode and couldn't be happier of show I am able to produce from a live stream.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I currently do not have a sponsor for the show. My goal is to build up my hosting credits and then start to seek bigger guests. With 100 episodes under my belt, I'm just getting ready to pull that throttle and take off! I think I understand how to host a game show, entertain my guests and allow them to plug their shows in a way that suits them.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
Each week I create a live stream event and invite my guests to appear on the show. We'll go live and play 3 rounds of trivia on Facebook and You Tube. My guests are all other podcasts that are recommended to me or I've sources through different channels. In order to run a show live, I need to make sure the guests have everything they need, the questions are written and the live streams are set up.
► How do you market your show?
All of my promotion comes from Social Media and good old fashioned podcast SEO! My hosting provider does an amazing job of tracking stats and can show me a pretty good breakdown of my traffic.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Get started! I promise you that you will get past all of the things that hang up. People are too focused on their own lives to care about the way your voice sounds, how you pronounce words or what content you want to produce. If those things are holding you back, just know that it is only you who is hung up on them. No one else cares, until you make them care and they can't care unless you get out there and get in front of them!
