► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is Steve Smith, I am the General Manager and Morning Show host of WCNL Country in Newport, NH. My Podcasts are recordings of my radio show interviews. Weekly I have very New Hampshire based, local guests. From State Reps, to the local car club, Newport's Police Chief, and local yokels....plus lots more.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started the podcast because I had a ton of people who would miss some of my content live and wanted to be able to listen on demand, on their time.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
The time is pretty easy, I see it as part of my job. I just record what I do normally live, save it, and upload. In regards to the funding, podcasts are ridiculously cheap to do. They cost me $75 a month. Chump change!
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I don't make a penny off podcasts, as I see it an extension of my on-air product. Podcasts are an added free benefit to my listeners. What I gain is more accessibility, portability, and on-demand access to my weekly content. Plus having the audio in recorded form has proven beneficial to some who want to agree or disagree with any one of my many guests, especially politically charged ones.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I record using an old program called Cool Edit Pro. Adobe has since bought it and made many upgrades. I like the old 2001 version of the program better, so I still use that. In regards to where I upload, I use Libsyn. They are great. Finding guests is easy, I have my weekly standards, and then others will contact me to get on the air as well. And how do I prepare? Meh....I just wing it. Seriously. It's more fun that way for me.
► How do you market your show?
I promo my podcasts on my radio station WCNL Country AM 1010 / FM 94.7 quite often.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
I have no advice to someone who wants to podcast exclusively, as that's not how I roll. I do think podcasts are the wave of the future. They will never fully kill broadcast radio, but they are an important addition to listener choice. I would say it's important to make sure your podcasts are compelling, entertaining, and worth listening to. If you just ramble, no one cares.
