► Tell us about you and your podcast
We are Caitlin Boddy and Hilary Wadsworth, your hosts and investigators. We are true crime enthusiasts and felt it was our place to tell this particular story.
Complicit follows the active investigation of 29 year old Lauren Dumolo. She vanished from her home in Cape Coral, FL, on June 19, 2020 and has not been seen or heard from since. Foul play is suspected, and veteran detectives are at a loss as to what happened to this young mother. Surprises and other tragedies surround this case - coincidences or not? The community rallies to search for this beautiful missing woman, but certain people close to Lauren are keeping their distance...the question is: why? Someone knows something; someone is complicit.
We will walk you through Lauren's case as we learned about it: through her family, through her friends, and through others who have firsthand knowledge. As the story evolves, and details unfold, we will do our best to present you with a full picture surrounding Lauren's disappearance and the notable events leading up to that fateful day.
Our listeners are followers of Lauren's story, Cape Coral area residents, even the suspects themselves have confirmed they listen...oh, and of course, true crime fans from around the world.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
We love true crime and happened to hear about this story from the very beginning - well, even before it happened; this will make more sense when you get to episode 5. We would tell our friends and family about the case as we learned more and more, and each time we told the story, inevitably someone would respond, "This is a movie!" or "This is a book!" ...and then we said, "No, this is a PODCAST." We both love podcasts and have been hooked since everyone else - since Serial was released.
The motivation behind turning the story into a podcast was because it was (and still is) and open and unsolved case. We didn't want to wait to retell the story in its entirety, we wanted to help be a part of the brain trust finding answers to this mystery. We wanted to get Lauren's story out in an accessible, free, and on-demand way.
We started the podcast writing in October, 2020, and launched in early February 2021. Within the first two months, we had over 20,000 downloads. This case seems to draw people in and capture their attention; Lauren somehow compels people to want to find her, and the people we interview for the podcast are characters in and of themselves. We are working hand in hand with Lauren's family and friends to tell the story, so we truly have an insiders perspective on the case.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We released our first two episodes simultaneously, then went to a weekly release from there until episode 7. This is because we had the content and facts and sources to support that kind of roll out. Because this is an active investigation, and we don't have answers quite yet, we had a natural pause after episode 7. We are planning to do audience Q and A Bonus episodes and perhaps have some experts weigh in, just to keep the momentum going on the case. Because we are so close to the case itself, we are aware of additional evidence and suspects, but we are unable to share it, as we don't want to harm the investigation in any way. There will be future episodes and there will be answers. This case will be solved.
Our turnaround time is about a week, and we are always two episodes ahead, since we have the "On the Next Complicit" section; we needed to know what the episode after the current one would be, so generally we were writing two in advance.
We both have full time jobs, so this was done on breaks, but mostly at night, on weekends. We are self-funded; it has cost around $10k all in between lawyers (we have a lawyer review every single word before we record, yes, we are scripted) and production and marketing, music, etc. We really hope to attract sponsors at this point, now that we have attracted an audience so quickly.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
With this particular podcast, the main goal was to assist in finding answers as to what happened to Lauren.
Now that we've gotten our feet wet in podcasting in general, we plan to continue with more cases, with the help of sponsors. We do not currently have any sponsors.
Podcasting has benefitted us by giving us a purpose - this case, while extremely interesting and compelling, is a real case, with real people and real suffering. It's been a privilege to see how our podcast has inspired the local community to do more about finding answers.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We record using Audacity, then send our files to Resonate Recordings to piece together. This is the part where we needed professionals because we don't have the time nor the expertise. Our expertise is in the storytelling and arranging each show as we would want to hear and experience it - with music, buildup, sound texture, etc.
We interview via Zoom and Zencastr. Then we get a transcript of each interview, and the narration script and the interview segments are put together to form the story. We generally know what we want to communicate in each episode, since we went through the story chronologically. It was an easier way and map to tell the story. We only broke with it in episodes 4 and 5 because we had to go back in time to explain the next part in a more relevant way.
► How do you market your show?
We have used social media mostly: Facebook organic, Facebook Ads, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok. We've also run Google Ads, released a press release with PRWire.com, and posted in Reddit groups.
We see a correlation in downloads when we release Facebook posts and Ads, primarily.
We do have a breakdown of listeners: 48% Apple Podcasts, 23% Spotify, 8% Google, 6% Castbox, and the remaining are dispersed between Stitcher, TuneIn, PodcastAddict, and more.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
If you can, do get help: help with whatever you need to be successful, whatever you are less than thrilled about doing. It will make your experience more fun and less of a chore. Outsource editing, cover art, whatever it is that you need, and you focus on what your gold is.
