Nigel Goldenfeld on the Genetic Code
In this episode, I speak with Prof. Nigel Goldenfeld. Nigel is a Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has tackled some fundamental questions in biology, and he provides some very unique thoughts on how he thinks about biological problems from the perspective of…
Physics Behind Evolution - Mar 2021 Quanta Magazine
Nigel Goldenfeld applied condensed matter physics to show evolution was blazingly fast for the earliest life and then slowed down.
University of Illinois hitting low COVID rates compared to state averages
The University of Illinois is experiencing a 0.1% infection rate on campus. Researchers attribute the low case numbers to their saliva tests they developed months ago at the university. The campus has been allowed to stay open due to their small COVID-19 rates. University of Illinois Advanced Stud…
COVID-19 won’t peak in Illinois until mid-June according to U of I physicists
University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign physicists Nigel Goldenfeld & Sergei Maslov join The Roe Conn Show to explain why modeling shows that Illinois won’t hit its peak of COVID-19 cases until mid-June. They also explain how they come up with these models.

Episode 4: Tech it or Leave It
Host Gwen Macsai breaks down some of the technology that the University of Illinois System is using to implement its COVID-19 mitigation plan. She takes a tour of the Veterinary Diagnostic Lab to follow saliva samples through the full process, then talks with Nigel Goldenfeld about the computer mod…
163 | Nigel Goldenfeld on Phase Transitions, Criticality, and Biology
Physics is extremely good at describing simple systems with relatively few moving parts. Sadly, the world is not like that; many phenomena of interest are complex, with multiple interacting parts and interesting things happening at multiple scales of length and time. One area where the techniques o…
51 | Nigel Goldenfeld and the jazz of impossible problems
Nigel Goldenfeld is the Chancellor's Distinguished Professor in Physics at the University of California at San Diego. In this episode, he talks with us about how research is an art form, and how he tries to help graduate students make the transition from being a “classical musician”, where the goal…
How Is Science Even Possible?
The universe seems like it should be unfathomably complex. How then is science able to crack fundamental questions about nature and life? Scientists and philosophers alike have often commented on the “unreasonable” success of mathematics at describing the universe. That success has helped science p…
The Physics Reason AI Works When It Shouldn’t
The same mathematics that explains why a fridge magnet sticks to your refrigerator also explains why neural networks work when they have no right to. His group did the calculation. Nobody else had. Subscribe if you want science with evidence, not speculation.
Goldenfeld is a Professor of Physics a…
