► Tell us about you and your podcast
I'm Reegs, one of the co-hosts of the Bad Dads Film Review podcast. We're a bunch of film junkies who had to go cold turkey from our favourite past-time when we became fathers so we decided to put out a weekly podcast where we catch up on movies we missed while our kids were young. As Dads we're also subjected to the things our children watch so we decided to review those programmes too, just for laughs. Only you can judge whether we met that brief. It means we end up with bizarre genre mashup episodes such as 'Midsommar & My Little Pony' or 'Palm Springs & Adventure Time'. We also compile a weekly Top 5, which might cover topics as diverse as the acting and directing work of Clint Eastwood through to the most memorable movie hat.
Our listeners are just like us: movie fans with a terrific sense of humour and a body to die for. Oh and they may well enjoy cheese.

► Why & how did you start this podcast?
Bad Dads Film Review was really the brain child of co-host Sidey in October 2019. Really the whole thing is an elaborate excuse to watch a few more movies and meet up with some friends once a week although as film enthusiasts we have been delighted to be able to bring guests on to the show including 'Coherence' director James Ward-Byrkit,'Bait' director Mark Jenkins and 'Star Wars' actor Jamie Chambers and understand a little bit more about how the movies we loved were made.
We recorded and launched our show basically straight away, without a clue or a strategy in November 2019 and our early shows are an absolute gold mine, if what you love is bad audio quality. We pretty much just recorded the episode and released it straight away!

► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We've consistently published a weekly episode since then and a bonus shorter mid-week episode for about the last year or so. We record on a single night, usually a Tuesday if you're interested, in co-host Dan's man-cave. Sidey is an absolute hero and does all of the editing and organises the social media posts to release our shorter episode on Wednesday and our main episode on Friday. Reegs does some of the website stuff when he can bothered and the episode show notes. But on recording night everyone brings their A-game, are usually well researched and in Dan's case, ready to mangle the English language beyond recognition.
Between watching the movies, researching and show notes it's probably an 11 to 14 hour commitment a week from me and more from Sidey. It can be difficult sometimes to cram real life and podcast into life but it's definitely worth it if you love what you do. The podcast is funded by us, so at no cost to the public we represent half decent value for money.

► What do you gain from podcasting?
We haven't taken sponsorship but I think I speak for us all when I say we'd sell out in a heartbeat for the right offer. In actuality we have looked at sponsorship but monetising the podcast is not really something we're interested in right now.
Podcasting has been a great creative outlet and strengthened friendships.

► How does your podcasting process look like?
Sidey does all of the editing and I'm ashamed to say I don't know all of the process, save for the fact that Audacity was at some point involved as was Descript. We have a squadcaster account for remote interviews which was of course invaluable during lockdown where we managed to maintain our weekly output.
► How do you market your show?
We use social media to promote our episodes, primarily Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Twitter is probably our favourite because of the immediacy of the interaction and we often feature listener suggestions or comments from Twitter in our shows. About a third of our listeners use iTunes although that is trending downwards as our Spotify, Overcast and Castbox audiences grow. One of our episodes outperforms our others by about 3 to 1 and despite my best efforts I haven't been able to work out why!
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Podcasting is a lot of work to provide even something half decent! The time commitment is probably a lot more than you think. The best advice I can give is just jump right in and provide something. If you're passionate which is probably why you're doing your podcast in the first place, you will find an audience.
