► Tell us about you and your podcast
I grew up in San Diego, CA and currently residing in Los Angeles where I perform stand up comedy regularly; some notable venues include The Comedy Store, The Ice House, and The Improv.
Before moving to LA I skateboarded from Oregon to New York and then from Santa Cruz, CA to San Diego, CA stopping and performing stand up along the way. My Podcast Unlicensed Therapy has been featured on SoundCloud and iTunes with over 500,000 subscribers.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I have listened to podcasts since 2006, back when I had to transfer them via a USB cable from my computer. I listen to tech podcasts, history, comedy, science. I think it's a great way to geek out and get specific on topics. I started my podcast in 2014 but didn't start taking it seriously until the last few years.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Podcasting is really a part time job for me, I put in anywhere from 5-20 hours a week doing it. I enjoy it and just treat it as something I have to do. You can make all the excuses in the world not to do something but at the end of the day do you want to have content that is your creation or do you want to be a lazy piglet like everyone else? I funded it all myself and if you want something bad enough you can save to make it happen.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I do get sponsorships here and there anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand but definitely cannot rely on them as a means of income. With the amount of time and money I have put into the podcast I would definitely say I have lost overall. The biggest gain I get from podcasting is meeting people and getting to learn about them. I also get really funny moments sometimes to post on my social media.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I am a real tech nerd and I personally do not like remote interviews so I only do it in person. I use a 32 bit float audio recorder made by sound devices and three different 4k Panasonic cameras to record video. I edit it all using Adobe Premiere. I do all the editing myself and most of the booking so it is definitely a process and always more work than it even sounds like.
► How do you market your show?
I post my podcast on every podcast listing I could find. Google, Apple, Spotify, Amazon, etc.. because I have been doing it for so long most of my audience uses apple podcasts however I do it see it moving more and more towards Spotify. I post video clips on my social media and the full episodes on youtube as well.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
You will get the same advice from most people and that includes me. First off who am I to be giving advice, I am a nobody... That being said, be consistent, create clips for social media, do video as well, try to limit remote interviews. Provide value and info along with entertainment. Think to yourself how can you make your podcast better than a comparable one.
