juan chavez (1966 – September 9, 1999) was a Mexican serial killer who, between 1986 and 1990, killed at least six gay men in three cities in Los Angeles County, California, luring them in with sexual encounters. While fully admitting his guilt, Chavez claimed the murders were an attempt to terminate the sexually transmitted AIDS epidemic, which received worldwide panic in the 1980s. Nevertheless, he was sentenced to life imprisonment on June 22, 1999, but committed suicide by hanging in his cell at Folsom State Prison just three months later.
