► Tell us about you and your podcast
I'm a 32 year old single mom and I've wondered for a long time if people are born with the inclination to do good or bad. I've always been interested in psychology and why people do the things they do. I was beyond apprehensive about launching a podcast, but I can honestly say that once I started working on it, I felt at home.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I absolutely LOVE listening to podcasts, so I decided to create my own. I mostly listen to true crime podcasts, mainly because I like to hear about the psychology behind it all. What makes people act the way they do, especially when those things are uniquely laudable or unimaginably reprehensible. I figured there might be a few people out there that are equally interested in the human psyche and what makes us tick.
I co-host a family friendly podcast with my daughter (Glitter, Horns and Unicorns), but the idea of hosting my own scared me. I finally decided to go for it at the end of 2020 and I've spent the last 6 months making a website, soliciting interviews and topic ideas, researching and recording. I just dropped my first episode in the wee hours of this morning (6/17/21) and I couldn't be more excited.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Luckily, podcasting can be pretty simple and inexpensive for beginners. I use a free podcast making app right now and my microphone only cast $150 on amazon. My goal right now is to release new episodes every two weeks. Recording is easy because I just have to make sure I have about 90 minutes free to record interviews. Editing is the time consuming part for me, but when you're passionate about it, you find time, even if it means staying up late or waking up early... or both most days.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
The only revenue I can earn right now is from ads set up by the podcasting app. In the future, I'd love it if I could make a few bucks on it, but I'm happy either way. The main benefit I get from podcasting is the ability to research a topic I'm genuinely interested. I have an excuse to talk about human nature and what it's all about. I've interviewed some really interesting, smart, insightful people that I never would've met if it weren't for the podcast. At the very least, I have a cool icebreaker at parties now.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
The app I use is anchor. I can record from my phone if I want, but I usually record in my laundry room or my bedroom if it's quiet enough. I use a USB mic I ordered from Amazon when I'm recording on my own. I use calendly to schedule interviews and Zoom to record them. It's pretty low maintenance. Once the audio is uploaded to Anchor, I can edit it, add music or sound effects and publish in relatively little time.
► How do you market your show?
The podcast is available on 7 different platforms, including apple, spotify and google. The anchor app also helps with that. Most of my listeners are on apple, but since it's so new, I'm not entirely sure what the real breakdown looks like yet.
I use social media and word of mouth to grow my audience. Instagram, Facebook and twitter are great ways to connect with other podcasters and use hashtags to find people that are interested in topics that I cover. Even my website was free. I used wix to create it and I plan to buy a domain.
I've interviewed several podcasters, they have helped promote the episodes they're on, so I'm excited to see what listeners stick around.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Do it! If you're thinking about it, just go for it. You can google any info you need to know and it's incredibly easy to do once you find a process/schedule/topic that works for you.
One tip that I've found is try to record the episode in one piece, or as few chunks as possible. I used to stop every time I made a mistake, but that makes the editing process more difficult, at least for me.
