00:00:48.479 --> 00:00:49.600
Hello everybody.
00:00:49.759 --> 00:00:51.759
Welcome back to the Club Nurse Podcast.
00:00:51.840 --> 00:00:59.520
My name is Colton Lord, your host, and today we are going to dive into some nurse news, some things happening in healthcare.
00:00:59.679 --> 00:01:12.239
If you're new to the Club Nurse Podcast, uh, we really cover a lot of news and current events that are happening in healthcare, mostly centered around nursing, because this is on the nurse.org platform.
00:01:12.480 --> 00:01:20.879
Uh, you can find this podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, you can find it at nurse.org, uh, embedded in any of the news articles.
00:01:21.120 --> 00:01:33.359
Um, and yeah, we try to keep you up to date with the most breaking news and things that hopefully um will be beneficial to you as the nurse or just person who is listening to this.
00:01:33.599 --> 00:01:37.680
So the first thing I wanted to just chat about, kind of give a little just a brief update on.
00:01:37.840 --> 00:01:46.319
I know I'm sure anybody listening to this has been uh maybe not even necessarily following the Lindsay Clancy trial, but has been, you know, paying attention.
00:01:46.400 --> 00:01:47.439
You know what's happening.
00:01:47.680 --> 00:01:50.959
If you don't know what's happening, just give you a very brief overview.
00:01:51.040 --> 00:01:53.040
I'm not going to go too deep into this.
00:01:53.120 --> 00:02:03.519
Um, but Lindsay Clancy, a I believe labor and delivery nurse in Massachusetts, um, is currently on trial for allegedly, and trigger warning here.
00:02:03.599 --> 00:02:05.439
I'm sorry, it kind of does get a little bit graphic.
00:02:05.519 --> 00:02:06.400
It's very sad.
00:02:06.719 --> 00:02:12.080
She is on trial for the murder of her children.
00:02:12.240 --> 00:02:19.039
Uh, she was basically was a was suffering from postpartum uh depression, psychosis.
00:02:19.120 --> 00:02:30.240
She was having a lot of uh mental health crises during this time, had seeked help for these things, had made it very well known that she was having these dark thoughts and she was really struggling.
00:02:30.560 --> 00:02:40.639
And the tragedy did happen where she did murder her children and subsequently did try to take her own life, uh, which she was not successful at.
00:02:40.719 --> 00:02:46.560
She ended up going to the ICU at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, and now is currently on trial.
00:02:46.719 --> 00:02:49.759
Um, this they have still not come to a verdict.
00:02:49.840 --> 00:02:52.560
They are still deliberating as of September 1st.
00:02:52.639 --> 00:02:57.759
Um, when I am recording this, they are still waiting for a verdict on this trial.
00:02:57.919 --> 00:02:59.280
Um, it's very sad.
00:02:59.520 --> 00:03:04.080
Um, regardless of your, you know, your opinions on this or what you really think happened.
00:03:04.240 --> 00:03:21.919
I think it's just it's safe to say that we can all agree that it's so tragic and that there needs to be more awareness and more uh a better plan for women who are seeking help who are struggling with postpartum depression or having these thoughts or are having any kind of psychosis postpartum.
00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:24.240
So it's impossible to even put into words.
00:03:24.479 --> 00:03:30.479
I can't imagine the agony that she was in, the things that she was experiencing in her own mind.
00:03:30.639 --> 00:03:33.599
It must have felt like worse than even a prison.
00:03:33.759 --> 00:03:47.759
But on in the most up-to-date, most recent uh article on nurse.org, which you can find at nurse.org slash news, the title of it is uh nurses and other health experts say some facts in Lindsay Clancy's case don't make sense.
00:03:47.919 --> 00:03:49.439
So there's a lot of speculation.
00:03:49.520 --> 00:03:51.919
You can go on social media as with anything.
00:03:52.080 --> 00:03:53.840
Um, there's always so much speculation.
00:03:53.919 --> 00:04:01.199
Everyone has an opinion, everyone, you know, will take information and do what they think is most appropriate with that information and formulate their own opinion.
00:04:01.439 --> 00:04:06.479
Some of them I think have um some validity to them, some of them I think are very um out there.
00:04:06.719 --> 00:04:09.520
Um, but again, that's not really for me to decide.
00:04:09.599 --> 00:04:13.919
Uh, there is a jury, there's a judge, there's that is why this is on a trial right now.
00:04:14.159 --> 00:04:24.639
You, I'm not, again, I'm not gonna go into the details uh of everything because there's a lot, and I don't want to give any false information or lead anybody astray.
00:04:24.800 --> 00:04:26.800
Uh, I think that you can you can go online.
00:04:26.879 --> 00:04:32.079
Again, nurse.org has been covering this as well with all of the updates, so it's a great place to get your information.
00:04:32.240 --> 00:04:37.759
All the information that I provide to you is directly from nurse.org and the news that we are reporting there.
00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:41.120
But yeah, there are definitely some discrepancies in the case.
00:04:41.279 --> 00:04:50.959
And sometimes, and you know, and some may say that it's just like the public's attempts uh to just kind of make make sense of what happened, and that at the end of the day, it's just a tragedy.
00:04:51.199 --> 00:04:55.360
And uh yeah, but you know, she's she's got the right to a fair trial.
00:04:55.439 --> 00:04:59.759
Um, that is her right as a um citizen of this country.
00:05:00.079 --> 00:05:02.800
And uh again, it's just it is so sad.
00:05:02.879 --> 00:05:09.360
And I think what makes it even harder for our community and and the nursing community is that she's also a labor and delivery nurse.
00:05:09.439 --> 00:05:11.040
Like she's one of us, you know what I mean?
00:05:11.279 --> 00:05:16.639
And she tried to get help, and unfortunately, it ended in in the worst possible way.
00:05:16.800 --> 00:05:19.360
Um, so everybody stand by for the verdict.
00:05:19.439 --> 00:05:24.399
Uh, hopefully we will have some answers soon, just for everybody's sake, for the families, for her sake.
00:05:24.480 --> 00:05:30.639
Um, so everybody can uh accept the the jury's uh verdict and move on from this case.
00:05:30.959 --> 00:05:40.560
All right, the next thing we're going to talk about, this is also not some great news, but um, nurses sound the alarm after pharmacy error paralyzes patient in a Nashville hospital.
00:05:40.879 --> 00:05:42.800
So this is actually coming fresh off.
00:05:42.879 --> 00:05:45.759
I just had a conversation with Redonda Vott a few weeks ago.
00:05:45.920 --> 00:05:48.959
If you want to catch that episode, everybody remembers Redonda.
00:05:49.199 --> 00:06:03.439
If you don't, she was a nurse at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville who had mistakenly gave uh Vecaronium instead of, I believe she was meaning to give Verset to a patient going to MRI that ultimately led to the death of a patient.
00:06:03.600 --> 00:06:06.560
Uh, Redonda is very outspoken about what happened.
00:06:06.639 --> 00:06:08.079
She's very honest about it.
00:06:08.240 --> 00:06:24.000
Uh, she is now using her voice, her platform, and this tragedy to really help people to educate nurses, to I think make facilities and organizations really reflect on themselves as well and their processes to ensure that these things don't happen.
00:06:24.160 --> 00:06:27.199
Um, but this case is also coming out of Nashville.
00:06:27.519 --> 00:06:33.920
Again, these uh patients had received a medication that they were not supposed to.
00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:38.480
Uh, so these patients were actually supposed to um actually let's go here.
00:06:38.560 --> 00:06:40.319
So four patients at Ascension St.
00:06:40.399 --> 00:06:53.839
Thomas Hospital, Midtown in Nashville were given potassium phosphate instead of the spinal anesthetic mepivacaine during routine joint replacement surgeries on August 14th, 2026, and at least two have been left paralyzed.
00:06:53.920 --> 00:06:57.360
And you may be wondering how, because of how the medication was given.
00:06:57.439 --> 00:07:00.959
Uh, the hospital has confirmed the mix-up began as a pharmacy error.
00:07:01.040 --> 00:07:08.240
A reminder that high alert medication safeguards protect every clinician in the chain, including the nurse or anesthesia provider who administers the dose.
00:07:08.480 --> 00:07:13.439
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has opened a case after a referral from state regulators.
00:07:13.600 --> 00:07:16.560
No charges have been filed and no allegations have been proven.
00:07:16.639 --> 00:07:23.759
But the criminal referral is already drawing comparisons to the Redonda VOT prosecution in the same city as I was just speaking about.
00:07:24.240 --> 00:07:31.040
So, what happened was all four of these patients experienced adverse health reactions and received immediate medical care.
00:07:31.279 --> 00:07:37.600
That's a quote from the hospital, adding that a comprehensive review found no other patients were affected.
00:07:37.759 --> 00:07:39.199
Um, and so this is what went wrong.
00:07:39.360 --> 00:07:42.560
All four surgeries were scheduled uh as routine joint replacements.
00:07:42.720 --> 00:07:48.319
One of the patients was a 72-year-old Glenda Dorton of Centerville, Tennessee, who came in for a knee replacement.
00:07:48.480 --> 00:07:55.040
Her attorney, Mark Walwin, said she remains hospitalized and is facing a long and uncertain recovery.
00:07:55.199 --> 00:07:55.680
Uh, Dr.
00:07:55.759 --> 00:08:08.399
Matthew Burns, a surgeon at Catalina Island Health in California, uh, with no connection to the case, told WSMV that infusing it straight into the spine, you can imagine it destroying the spinal cord.
00:08:08.560 --> 00:08:11.839
He also named the problem every nurse recognizes from the medrooms.
00:08:11.920 --> 00:08:16.560
If you don't have it labeled, you wouldn't know the difference between 95% of the medications.
00:08:16.720 --> 00:08:27.199
So from me reading this, it sounds like maybe pharmacy had pulled up the medication and handed it to the uh provider.
00:08:27.439 --> 00:08:39.120
And, you know, if they're just handing you a syringe or whatever, however they're administering it, it's just gonna look, you know, the same unless it's something like propofol uh or something that's very obviously not the medication that you're looking for.
00:08:39.440 --> 00:08:41.519
Uh so yes, very tragic.
00:08:41.679 --> 00:08:45.279
Sounds like this is not going to go well for these patients.
00:08:45.360 --> 00:08:49.840
And I hope that they can regain some kind of uh movement back from this.
00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:56.799
But again, just another reminder that uh medication errors are real, to always double-check things.
00:08:56.960 --> 00:09:01.440
Uh, as the nurse, this is why uh we are so hounded to scan things.
00:09:01.519 --> 00:09:05.840
I know it is very annoying at times, especially in emergencies, but there's a reason for it.
00:09:05.919 --> 00:09:10.960
And I think at the end of the day, it really is uh just a safeguard for everybody involved.
00:09:11.200 --> 00:09:14.159
Hey nurses, looking for exclusive discounts?
00:09:14.399 --> 00:09:17.279

Don't miss out.
00:09:21.679 --> 00:09:26.720
Visit nurse.org backslash discounts for the latest discounts made just for you.
00:09:27.039 --> 00:09:33.679
Okay, so this next story says nursing graduates blocked from NCLEX as Nightingale College sues California boards.
00:09:33.759 --> 00:09:34.799
So this sounds like a nightmare.
00:09:34.879 --> 00:09:38.639
I was reading through this and I was like, oh my God, this is a nursing student's nightmare.
00:09:38.879 --> 00:09:43.759
I remember being in nursing school and they we had like the I don't know what you would call them.
00:09:43.919 --> 00:10:01.840
I went to a nursing school in Arizona, but it was like the the people came who were like the accreditors for the nursing program, like they come and they basically investigate everything and make sure that your school is like in compliance and gives them the accreditation to uh because you can go to nursing school and get a degree.
00:10:01.919 --> 00:10:06.879
And if like that school doesn't have the appropriate accreditation, then you can't take the NCLEX.
00:10:06.960 --> 00:10:11.919
So you have a degree, but you're not technically not qualified to take the NCLEX and become a nurse.
00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:17.840
And I mean, there's not much, I mean, you know, there, I guess there's something you could do with a bachelor's or whatever, some kind of degree in nursing.
00:10:17.919 --> 00:10:21.679
But if you don't have the license, you can't be really, you know, you can't work as a nurse.
00:10:22.399 --> 00:10:33.120
So um, Nightingale College has sued the California Board of Nursing on August 24th, challenging a 500-hour direct patient care threshold and an undefined concurrency standard.
00:10:33.279 --> 00:10:36.240
It says were never lawfully adopted for out-of-state graduates.
00:10:36.399 --> 00:10:41.600
Uh, 873 graduates have California licensure applications on hold per the board.
00:10:41.759 --> 00:11:00.720
The complaint says about 536 of the college's 561 spring graduates have been unable to test, and about 70 have lost job offers, which is a big bummer because from I and I know as a new grad in California, not that I was a new grad here, but I've I know I know this now for being here that new grads have a really hard time finding jobs.
00:11:00.799 --> 00:11:03.440
It's like a super competitive and saturated market.
00:11:03.600 --> 00:11:07.919
So it's a big bummer if you're having to get your you know, your job offers being rescinded.
00:11:08.159 --> 00:11:11.840
So California treats nursing programs differently depending on where they are based.
00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:20.879
Schools located in California are approved by the Board of Nursing and meet must meet state curriculum rules, including minimum direct patient care hours.
00:11:21.039 --> 00:11:29.519
Graduates of out-of-state schools apply individually, and the board decides whether their education is equivalent to what California requires of its own programs.
00:11:29.759 --> 00:11:33.279
Nightingale is not to be confused with Florence Nightingale.
00:11:33.360 --> 00:11:34.480
This is just what the college is called.
00:11:34.639 --> 00:11:36.399
Nightingale is on the second track.
00:11:36.480 --> 00:11:38.080
It is headquartered in Utah.
00:11:38.159 --> 00:11:46.159
Its BSN program is accredited by the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education, and many of its students live in California and study remotely.
00:11:46.399 --> 00:11:47.919
The fight is over.
00:11:48.399 --> 00:11:52.320
Which rules the board can use when judging their education.
00:11:52.559 --> 00:12:03.759
So it sounds like this has to do with the hour of direct patient care requirement that they must not have met based on California requirements, but the college is in base in Utah.
00:12:03.919 --> 00:12:04.559
So I don't know.
00:12:04.799 --> 00:12:06.000
Sounds very complicated.
00:12:06.240 --> 00:12:19.600
If you are a graduate that is being affected right now, what you can do is just to continue to monitor your Breeze account, um, just watch for application changes, continue your NCLEX preparation, which nurse.org has resources.
00:12:19.759 --> 00:12:21.039
There's a link in the article.
00:12:21.200 --> 00:12:24.960
Um you can also just search NCLEX resources on the nurse.org page.
00:12:25.120 --> 00:12:31.919
Um, and then rely on verified communications from Nightingale and the Board of Nursing rather than rumors in the student groups.
00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:35.840
Uh, Nightingale posts case updates on its California update page.
00:12:35.919 --> 00:12:45.120
And just keep documentation and paper trail because when you apply for jobs, they're gonna ask for why were there gaps in your work yesterday or why did it take you so long to get a job after you graduated?
00:12:45.279 --> 00:12:46.399
They want to know all those things.
00:12:46.480 --> 00:12:48.159
So make sure you just keep paper trail.
00:12:48.320 --> 00:12:49.840
Always get to document things.
00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:54.639
You should you should know this now that your nurse says documentation uh is huge.
00:12:54.879 --> 00:13:04.159
So yeah, and I guess there's you know, there's there's a nice little debate, good question on if clinical simulation hours should count towards direct patient care requirements for licensure.
00:13:04.399 --> 00:13:05.519
I don't know what your thoughts are.
00:13:05.679 --> 00:13:09.759
I think that's a very uh interesting uh question.
00:13:10.159 --> 00:13:13.360
Uh I'm not sure what my opinion is on that.
00:13:13.519 --> 00:13:20.399
I think that uh it maybe depends because I think some simulations are a little bit better than others.
00:13:20.559 --> 00:13:28.240
And I think some, I don't think that you should be, I think I think maybe simulation hours should count up to a certain amount.
00:13:28.399 --> 00:13:32.960
Like I don't think that you can get through your whole school with just simulation and call it a day.
00:13:33.120 --> 00:13:35.200
But I do think that there are some benefit.
00:13:35.360 --> 00:13:38.320
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I do believe that there are some benefits.
00:13:38.480 --> 00:13:46.000
I think there are also a lot of cons to simulation, but I do see that there are some benefits to certain simulation centers and how they're ran.
00:13:46.320 --> 00:13:53.759
And I could see how maybe uh clinical simulation could give you maybe some hours up to a certain amount.
00:13:53.840 --> 00:13:56.960
That would be my personal opinion, but who am I to say?
00:13:57.200 --> 00:13:58.559
Um, all right, moving on.
00:13:58.639 --> 00:14:06.000
I hope that these uh graduates from um this college, Nightingale College, eventually can just get their license and get to work, girl.
00:14:06.240 --> 00:14:09.919
We need you, and I think I think that we uh I think we can just move on from this.
00:14:10.000 --> 00:14:12.080
Let's just give them, let them go take their tests.
00:14:12.240 --> 00:14:20.639
I mean, the State Board of Nursing for California did say like the the public and the patients or the the public safety is priority, and I I do understand that.
00:14:20.960 --> 00:14:21.840
Okay, let's move on.
00:14:22.000 --> 00:14:25.360
Oh my gosh, we had a tragedy this last week, girl.
00:14:25.600 --> 00:14:27.360
Dolly Parton has died.
00:14:27.600 --> 00:14:31.600
Ugh, nurses say goodbye to Dolly Parton, whose giving reached all the way to the bedside.
00:14:31.679 --> 00:14:32.480
She is amazing.
00:14:32.639 --> 00:14:38.559
I'm sorry, if you are a rich human being, you are a celebrity, and you have just made a fortune.
00:14:38.879 --> 00:14:47.759
Let Dolly Parton be, let her be the blueprint on how on how this should work, uh how money should be uh shared once you've got enough.
00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:48.559
Amazing.
00:14:48.720 --> 00:14:55.600
I couldn't believe, like, I mean, of course, everyone knows Dolly Parton, but as she's died, and I've kind of like, you know, read things about her, watched some documentaries on her.
00:14:55.759 --> 00:14:57.519
I can't believe how much she gives.
00:14:57.600 --> 00:15:01.679
She just gives and gives and how much she worked, and just she just continued to just give back.
00:15:01.840 --> 00:15:05.679
She never had kids, but she impacted and affected so many people.
00:15:05.840 --> 00:15:14.159
Um, but she did die on August 25th at Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center um after a short uh brief battle with cancer.
00:15:14.320 --> 00:15:22.320
Uh, she did give a million dollars to Vanderbilt in April of 2020, which helped fund early research connected to the Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine.
00:15:22.480 --> 00:15:23.519
Of course she did.
00:15:23.759 --> 00:15:33.600
So her name lives on where nurses work from the Dolly Parton birthing unit at LaConte Medical Center in her hometown to the newly renamed Dolly Parton's Children's Hospital in Knoxville.
00:15:33.759 --> 00:15:34.559
Um, amazing.
00:15:34.720 --> 00:15:36.960
Her legacy is going to live on forever.
00:15:37.120 --> 00:15:40.080
And so many nurses went to social media to talk about it.
00:15:40.240 --> 00:15:44.080
I think someone who put a great video up was Hospice Nurse Julie.
00:15:44.320 --> 00:15:47.919
My girl, go watch her TikTok or her Instagram about Dolly Parton.
00:15:48.080 --> 00:15:49.200
Just what it what a person.
00:15:49.279 --> 00:15:51.919
I mean, there's nobody who will ever be like Dolly Parton.
00:15:52.080 --> 00:15:52.960
Ugh, I just I just can't.
00:15:53.200 --> 00:15:57.519
I was watching something that was like, who an interview with like some country music people?
00:15:57.679 --> 00:16:00.399
Who do you think is the the modern day Dolly Parton?
00:16:00.559 --> 00:16:01.440
Like, girl, nobody.
00:16:01.519 --> 00:16:03.440
Like, you can't compare absolutely nobody.
00:16:03.600 --> 00:16:08.480
I can't even begin to try to compare her to anybody else because she was literally one of one.
00:16:08.960 --> 00:16:10.080
So R.I.P.
00:16:10.240 --> 00:16:11.120
Dolly Parton.
00:16:11.279 --> 00:16:15.519
All right, to round this week's news out, I know we don't have very much good news this week, and I'm very sorry.
00:16:15.759 --> 00:16:21.679
But this is a article New Grad nurse pleads guilty in nursing home hypothermia death avoids prison.
00:16:21.840 --> 00:16:24.639
So this actually seems like this has been kind of ongoing.
00:16:24.720 --> 00:16:38.799
Um, this is an update from March of 2025, but this new grad nurse pleaded guilty on August 25th, the same day Dolly died, uh, to two misdemeanors, negligent homicide, and patient neglect, and was sentenced to two years of community control.
00:16:39.120 --> 00:16:42.159
Now, the story basically was this was at a nursing home.
00:16:42.240 --> 00:16:43.600
It was a new grad nurse.
00:16:43.919 --> 00:16:46.480
A patient was found dead.
00:16:46.559 --> 00:16:53.919
It's like they had somehow gotten locked outside on the patio to a door that was unlocked on the inside, but locked on the outside, I believe.
00:16:54.080 --> 00:16:55.440
Um, got locked outside.
00:16:55.519 --> 00:16:57.279
It was December and died.
00:16:57.519 --> 00:16:58.399
Very, very sad.
00:16:58.639 --> 00:17:02.960
Uh, but it sounds like the the nurse had falsely documented some things.
00:17:03.039 --> 00:17:11.680
They're supposed to document every two hours on the patient and that they had falsified documentation showing that there were completed tasks, even though they had not actually seen the patient.
00:17:11.759 --> 00:17:14.079
Uh the timeline went uh 8 40 p.m.
00:17:14.240 --> 00:17:19.359
The staff last observed this patient in her room during routine medications at 9 30.
00:17:19.519 --> 00:17:24.400
Um, the nurse who was assigned uh noticed that the patient was missing, but assumed she was with her brother.
00:17:24.480 --> 00:17:26.160
No immediate report was made.
00:17:26.319 --> 00:17:38.559
And at 6:30 the next morning, that's when they had called uh Code Purple, alerting that the patient was missing, was found unresponsive on an outdoor patio, and attempt to revive were um unsuccessful.
00:17:38.799 --> 00:17:39.599
Super sad.
00:17:39.920 --> 00:17:44.240
Also, just points to nursing homes and the staffing issues that they have.
00:17:44.400 --> 00:17:47.519
Um, I am not here to judge because I can't even imagine.
00:17:47.599 --> 00:17:55.680
I've worked in a nursing home before as a CNA, and the amount of patients that each person is responsible for is should be absolutely illegal.
00:17:55.920 --> 00:17:57.519
But what can you do?
00:17:57.599 --> 00:18:01.759
We don't have enough nurses, and especially not enough who want to work in nursing homes.
00:18:01.920 --> 00:18:09.119
Um, I give so much credit to those nurses and those CNAs and those LPNs and anybody, anybody there who is caring for these patients.
00:18:09.200 --> 00:18:10.480
It is hard work.
00:18:10.640 --> 00:18:11.599
It's very sad.
00:18:11.839 --> 00:18:14.799
But that nurse is not going to have to face prison time.
00:18:15.039 --> 00:18:15.839
All right, everybody.
00:18:15.920 --> 00:18:20.240
So that's the end of our nurse news segment for this week.
00:18:20.480 --> 00:18:21.519
Happy September.
00:18:21.680 --> 00:18:23.279
Fall is on the way, girl.
00:18:23.440 --> 00:18:25.599
Cooler temperatures are on the horizon.
00:18:25.759 --> 00:18:27.839
I hope everybody has a beautiful week.
