WEBVTT
00:00:01.097 -->
00:00:07.997Well, hello my valued listeners, and welcome back to another episode of Living in Your Power.
00:00:08.257 -->
00:00:10.537I'm your host, Dr. Marilyn Greenlee,
00:00:10.777 -->
00:00:15.357and I'm truly grateful that you're spending this time with me today.
00:00:15.977 -->
00:00:21.777Now, before we move forward, I want to acknowledge something meaningful about this week.
00:00:22.517 -->
00:00:29.717Just a few days ago, many celebrated Valentine's Day, a time often centered around love.
00:00:30.017 -->
00:00:35.917And today, we observe President's Day, a time set aside to reflect on leadership,
00:00:36.537 -->
00:00:38.717legacy, and responsibility.
00:00:39.817 -->
00:00:46.997And when you think about it, both love and leadership require something deeply important.
00:00:49.092 -->
00:00:55.332Integrity. So Valentine's Day may highlight affection and connection,
00:00:55.712 -->
00:01:01.292but real love, whether in relationships, families, or communities,
00:01:02.072 -->
00:01:06.632requires healthy boundaries and emotional maturity.
00:01:07.532 -->
00:01:13.912And President's Day invites us to reflect on those who have led before us,
00:01:13.912 -->
00:01:21.192reminding us that leadership is not just about position or power but about character,
00:01:21.592 -->
00:01:23.632courage, and accountability.
00:01:24.692 -->
00:01:34.092So both love and leadership ask us to show up fully with empathy, clarity, and wisdom.
00:01:34.092 -->
00:01:41.432Which brings us directly into today's conversation as we continue our February
00:01:41.432 -->
00:01:46.612series exploring what it truly means to lead with heart.
00:01:46.892 -->
00:01:52.592Not from exhaustion, guilt, or overextension, but from wisdom,
00:01:53.332 -->
00:01:55.292faith, and emotional integrity.
00:01:56.672 -->
00:02:04.032We remain grounded in our theme, leading with heart, compassion,
00:02:04.772 -->
00:02:06.732courage, and connection.
00:02:07.692 -->
00:02:14.692And today's episode, the third in our February series, is entitled Boundaries,
00:02:15.372 -->
00:02:18.852Empathy, and Emotional Integrity.
00:02:19.912 -->
00:02:21.632So let's get started.
00:02:23.238 -->
00:02:30.258Now, for many leaders, especially those who care deeply, boundaries can feel uncomfortable.
00:02:31.478 -->
00:02:35.818I mean, we worry that setting limits will make us appear uncaring.
00:02:36.238 -->
00:02:39.718We fear disappointing others.
00:02:40.698 -->
00:02:44.838And we tell ourselves that saying yes is just part of leadership.
00:02:46.338 -->
00:02:55.598But here's the truth. Boundaries are not barriers. They are expressions of integrity.
00:02:57.758 -->
00:03:05.658When you lack boundaries, you begin to lead from depletion instead of discernment.
00:03:06.698 -->
00:03:12.178You start responding out of obligation rather than alignment.
00:03:13.918 -->
00:03:21.578Now Jesus modeled boundaries clearly. He withdrew some crowds. He rested.
00:03:22.458 -->
00:03:28.938He prayed? He said no, even when needs were present?
00:03:30.138 -->
00:03:38.718So think on this. Now Mark 1.35 tells us, Very early in the morning, while it was still dark,
00:03:39.138 -->
00:03:46.318Jesus got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place where he prayed.
00:03:46.318 -->
00:03:55.998Now if Jesus in all his compassion honored boundaries we are not exempt boundaries
00:03:55.998 -->
00:03:59.958protect your capacity to lead well.
00:04:02.479 -->
00:04:06.239Empathy allows us to feel with others.
00:04:06.539 -->
00:04:11.399It helps us connect, understand, and respond with care.
00:04:12.459 -->
00:04:18.639But empathy without boundaries becomes emotional over-identification.
00:04:19.119 -->
00:04:25.879And when we carry what was never meant for us to hold, burnout follows.
00:04:27.239 -->
00:04:34.039In my own leadership journey, I've learned that being emphatic does not mean
00:04:34.039 -->
00:04:40.739absorbing everyone else's emotions, struggles, or expectations.
00:04:42.499 -->
00:04:46.979God calls us to be compassionate, not consumed.
00:04:48.019 -->
00:04:55.619And Galatians 6.5 reminds us, For each one should carry their own load.
00:04:56.739 -->
00:05:03.619There's a difference between helping someone carry their burden and taking it on as your own.
00:05:04.139 -->
00:05:11.239Emotional integrity means knowing where you end and someone else begins.
00:05:13.939 -->
00:05:18.899So now, if you decide to leave your heart while protecting your well-being,
00:05:19.739 -->
00:05:25.299here are three ways to practice emotional integrity.
00:05:26.839 -->
00:05:31.259First, know your limits and honor them.
00:05:31.959 -->
00:05:36.139I'm going to say that again. Know your limits and honor them.
00:05:36.639 -->
00:05:44.259Your limits are not flaws. They are, in fact, guides. And when you ignore them, resentment builds.
00:05:44.579 -->
00:05:48.979And when you honor them, clarity increases.
00:05:50.819 -->
00:05:55.319Second, respond with compassion, not rescue.
00:05:56.039 -->
00:05:58.939Not every struggle requires you to fix it.
00:05:59.979 -->
00:06:02.479You're not the fixer. And sometimes
00:06:02.479 -->
00:06:07.559the most compassionate response is presence, not problem solving.
00:06:08.519 -->
00:06:13.179And third, practice honest communication.
00:06:14.399 -->
00:06:20.719Boundaries are most effective when communicated with clarity and kindness.
00:06:21.819 -->
00:06:27.259You can say no without guilt. And you can be firm without being harsh.
00:06:27.719 -->
00:06:32.139And you can also lead with heart and still protect your peace.
00:06:36.138 -->
00:06:42.998So let's reflect on Proverbs 25, 28, which says, Like a city whose walls are
00:06:42.998 -->
00:06:48.298broken through is a person who lacks self-control.
00:06:50.458 -->
00:06:56.298Boundaries are the walls that protect your emotional and spiritual health.
00:06:59.178 -->
00:07:04.918So here's your empowerment prompt for this week. I want you to take time to
00:07:04.918 -->
00:07:06.658reflect on these questions.
00:07:08.818 -->
00:07:15.978Where am I overextending myself emotionally? What boundary is God inviting me
00:07:15.978 -->
00:07:17.758to strengthen or establish?
00:07:19.078 -->
00:07:24.478And how can I practice empathy without abandoning myself?
00:07:25.618 -->
00:07:28.298I'm going to repeat those on three questions.
00:07:29.718 -->
00:07:33.458Now I want you to take time again to reflect on these questions.
00:07:34.118 -->
00:07:37.158Where am I overextending myself emotionally?
00:07:38.018 -->
00:07:43.338What boundary is God inviting me to strengthen or establish?
00:07:43.898 -->
00:07:48.898And how can I practice empathy without abandoning myself?
00:07:51.397 -->
00:07:58.077And be honest with your answers, because boundaries begin with self-awareness.
00:07:59.577 -->
00:08:04.697So in closing today, my friends, I want you to remember that leading with heart
00:08:04.697 -->
00:08:07.257does not mean leading without limits.
00:08:08.057 -->
00:08:13.937Emotional integrity allows you to show up fully without losing yourself in the
00:08:13.937 -->
00:08:22.277process. When your boundaries are clear, your compassion becomes sustainable.
00:08:23.337 -->
00:08:30.597So I want to thank you again for joining me today on episode 3 in our February
00:08:30.597 -->
00:08:35.677series, Leading with Heart, Compassion, Courage, and Connection.
00:08:35.957 -->
00:08:38.697And next week, we'll close out this month.
00:08:43.757 -->
00:08:51.357With a powerful conversation entitled Courageous Leadership that honors the whole person.
00:08:52.677 -->
00:08:56.337So you've been listening to Living in Your Power.
00:08:56.577 -->
00:09:00.497And again, I am Dr. Marlene Greenlee. So until next time, dear listeners,
00:09:00.997 -->
00:09:04.637I want you to continue to live boldly in your power today.
00:09:04.997 -->
00:09:08.537And if it gets tough, just breathe.
00:09:11.617 -->
00:09:14.637You've still got the strength to rise.
00:09:14.937 -->
00:09:21.917So until next time, continue to live in your power.
