ABOUT THIS EPISODE
What if the “self-care” you reach for at 5 p.m. is the very thing stealing your sleep, peace, and energy? We dig into why alcohol and sugar feel soothing in the moment yet quietly disrupt dopamine, flatten motivation, inflame anxiety, and throw women’s hormones off balance. Ashlee shares what changed across 17 months alcohol-free—better cycles, calmer mornings, clearer joy—while Tabitha breaks down the functional medicine behind cravings, from microbiome shifts to estrogen clearance and why weekend binges still drive risk.
We don’t stop at science. Shame loses power when brought into the light, and sustainable change comes from pairing spiritual honesty with smart physiology. You’ll learn how to reset dopamine gently, use protein and healthy fats to stabilize blood sugar, and create friction for triggers with mocktails and simple swaps. We talk about why white knuckling fails, how to re-associate weddings, weekends, and summers with real joy, and the line that changed our approach: you can’t pray away a dopamine deficit and you can’t supplement your way out of spiritual avoidance.
If you’re tired of feeling puffy, wired, and stuck, this conversation offers a kinder path: one day at a time, one lever at a time, with community, Scripture, and practical tools that work. Freedom isn’t about restriction; it’s about restoration—body and soul in alignment so cravings finally quiet. Subscribe, share with a friend who needs hope, and leave a review telling us the one habit you’re ready to lay down this week.

00:00:00.239 --> 00:00:10.160
When you drink, you think you're doing it to enjoy people more, but what you're actually doing is you're tolerating people you wouldn't tolerate sober.
00:00:10.160 --> 00:00:13.199
I'm like, oh, that's so good.
00:00:13.199 --> 00:00:27.760
If you're tired of doing all the right things and still feeling exhausted, stuck in your body, and disconnected from God, this podcast is for you.
00:00:27.760 --> 00:00:28.559
I'm Dr.
00:00:28.559 --> 00:00:37.359
Tabitha, triple board certified functional medicine physician, and I help women stop fighting their bodies and start healing them God's way.
00:00:37.359 --> 00:00:40.479
This isn't about another diet or quick fix.
00:00:40.479 --> 00:00:48.640
This is about restoring your energy, your confidence, and your faith through fasting, functional medicine, and biblical truth.
00:00:48.640 --> 00:00:52.320
Welcome to Fast to Faith, where you don't just lose weight and feel great.
00:00:52.320 --> 00:00:55.119
You step into who God created you to be.
00:00:55.119 --> 00:00:56.880
So let's get into it.
00:00:56.880 --> 00:01:04.319
Welcome back to the Fast of Faith podcast.
00:01:04.319 --> 00:01:06.239
Thank you for coming in, Ashley.
00:01:06.239 --> 00:01:08.079
Absolutely happy to be here.
00:01:08.079 --> 00:01:09.519
It's insane outside.
00:01:09.519 --> 00:01:20.079
We just need to acknowledge in case you hear something in the background, it is like a little kid's snow globe, and the kid shook it off really bad, and it's wild out there.
00:01:20.079 --> 00:01:25.840
So I'm just grateful that we're actually in the studio because I don't know how we got here actually.
00:01:26.079 --> 00:01:28.159
I don't either, but I think it's really nice to be here.
00:01:28.159 --> 00:01:32.000
We're in that weird week between Christmas and New Year's, and here we are recording for you guys.
00:01:32.239 --> 00:01:34.959
Yes, and you are listening after the new year.
00:01:34.959 --> 00:01:39.359
So I have no doubt you made some kind of New Year's resolution.
00:01:39.359 --> 00:01:50.480
Hopefully, you listened to our episode last week about New Year's resolutions because the truth is a lot of us need to break up with some strongholds.
00:01:50.480 --> 00:01:53.280
Can we just be honest today?
00:01:53.599 --> 00:01:56.159
Yeah, two main two main things, I think.
00:01:56.159 --> 00:01:57.040
What are they?
00:01:57.040 --> 00:01:58.879
Sugar and alcohol.
00:01:59.200 --> 00:02:00.480
Ooh, okay.
00:02:00.480 --> 00:02:02.959
I I might get a lot of hate mail for this.
00:02:02.959 --> 00:02:03.840
All right.
00:02:03.840 --> 00:02:07.040
Maybe not the sugar, but definitely the alcohol.
00:02:07.040 --> 00:02:13.759
But if you partied hard and enjoyed the new year, um, then you're you may be ready to hear this.
00:02:13.759 --> 00:02:19.439
But maybe you went to bed at nine o'clock because you can't even tolerate alcohol anymore.
00:02:19.439 --> 00:02:22.800
So I think everybody needs to listen to this episode, right?
00:02:23.039 --> 00:02:23.280
Yeah.
00:02:23.280 --> 00:02:23.840
That's true.
00:02:23.840 --> 00:02:24.479
Because you know what?
00:02:24.479 --> 00:02:28.240
This is coming out that Monday after the everyone goes back to work.
00:02:28.240 --> 00:02:30.000
So this is the after work episode.
00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:32.400
Like everyone's back to reality today.
00:02:32.639 --> 00:02:34.560
Yes, we're back to reality.
00:02:34.560 --> 00:02:42.479
And let's just talk about the truth about alcohol and sugar, is they are a socially acceptable addiction.
00:02:42.479 --> 00:02:54.639
I know that some, you know, drug addicts, other addicts, they sometimes don't want us to put sugar and alcohol on the same level, but it hits the same chemistry.
00:02:54.639 --> 00:02:56.159
So we're gonna talk about that.
00:02:56.159 --> 00:03:08.800
We're gonna talk about why you are addicted to sugar and alcohol and what it does to your neurochemistry, to your hormones, and more importantly, how to break free from it.
00:03:08.800 --> 00:03:15.120
Because I think the new year is the perfect time to just give it one last chance.
00:03:15.120 --> 00:03:21.199
And I say last because I want this to be done and finished, right?
00:03:21.520 --> 00:03:22.560
Yes, exactly.
00:03:22.560 --> 00:03:28.000
And this is such an important conversation because women don't feel addicted.
00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:32.960
Um, I was there myself, they just feel stuck and then they blame themselves.
00:03:33.199 --> 00:03:33.759
Yeah.
00:03:33.759 --> 00:03:37.439
Tell me how long, when's the last time you had a drink?
00:03:37.759 --> 00:03:42.319
Man, we are when you're watching this episode, we will have hit 17 months.
00:03:42.319 --> 00:03:45.759
So 17 months ago, I had my last drink.
00:03:45.759 --> 00:03:47.599
I remember it like it was yesterday.
00:03:47.599 --> 00:03:49.919
And was that on purpose?
00:03:49.919 --> 00:03:52.080
Um, a little bit.
00:03:52.080 --> 00:03:53.840
I woke up feeling like crap.
00:03:53.840 --> 00:03:57.680
I think every year you it gets harder and harder to recover.
00:03:57.680 --> 00:04:03.439
Um, and then there also was that point of like, I didn't think I had a problem.
00:04:03.439 --> 00:04:11.360
Um, it got to the point where I needed a drink every day and I needed a little bit more every day to feel better.
00:04:11.360 --> 00:04:19.519
So um I look back now and I can say I was relying on alcohol more than I would like to admit that I was at the time.
00:04:19.839 --> 00:04:20.240
Yeah.
00:04:20.240 --> 00:04:24.879
Unfortunately, we see this every day with our clients and our patients, right?
00:04:24.879 --> 00:04:28.959
So it's the I just need to unwind.
00:04:28.959 --> 00:04:30.079
I deserve this.
00:04:30.079 --> 00:04:31.519
I worked hard today.
00:04:31.519 --> 00:04:35.439
Or why else would I get together with my girlfriends?
00:04:35.439 --> 00:04:37.120
We just we go out for drinks.
00:04:37.120 --> 00:04:38.160
That's what we do.
00:04:38.160 --> 00:04:41.439
And so it's very socially acceptable.
00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:44.079
Oh, it's totally socially acceptable.
00:04:44.079 --> 00:04:53.040
And I will say that it is starting to become more socially acceptable to have a mock tail instead of a cocktail, which is a really cool thing to see.
00:04:53.360 --> 00:04:54.319
Thankfully, yes.
00:04:54.319 --> 00:05:00.319
But can I even say I think it it's not just socially acceptable, it's almost mandatory.
00:05:00.319 --> 00:05:00.639
Yeah.
00:05:00.639 --> 00:05:10.319
I hear from patients and clients that I can't not drink because my girlfriends will question me about it and they'll think I'm judging them.
00:05:10.319 --> 00:05:17.199
And so it's like you're stuck in this situation where you can't stop drinking even if you want to.
00:05:17.199 --> 00:05:25.839
So I'm so excited about the mocktails that have come out, and now they're like in cans and sparkling adaptogens and all these different options.
00:05:25.839 --> 00:05:34.240
Um, but for so long, women just felt this peer pressure to fit in and belong.
00:05:34.240 --> 00:05:42.879
So if that is you, I really want you to know that it doesn't have to be that way, and your friends probably secretly feel like crap too.
00:05:42.879 --> 00:05:43.120
Yeah.
00:05:43.120 --> 00:05:49.199
And so you gotta just be the leader and get on board and be like, this is what we're doing.
00:05:49.199 --> 00:05:50.879
Let's try something new.
00:05:50.879 --> 00:05:53.199
Cause we can learn to have fun.
00:05:53.439 --> 00:05:59.839
Yeah, learn to have fun without alcohol and us and not associate every outing with alcohol because that's what it is.
00:05:59.839 --> 00:06:05.839
Like weddings, and for me, it was summer and boating, and I just instantly thought I gotta have a drink.
00:06:05.839 --> 00:06:25.360
And so every day that has gone by over the last 17 months, that's what that's what's happened, is I've been able to now reassociate those activities with joy and actually see the joy in them instead of having to find the joy through alcohol.
00:06:25.600 --> 00:06:26.639
Oh my goodness.
00:06:26.639 --> 00:06:29.600
Okay, so how did you do that?
00:06:30.399 --> 00:06:31.920
Well, it took a while.
00:06:31.920 --> 00:06:46.240
And it took, it took the I remember like the first wedding, and I remember going to the all-inclusive and like every day at the all-inclusive being like, okay, today we're not gonna have a drink, and we're only gonna worry about today, and then living in the moment.
00:06:46.240 --> 00:07:05.519
Um, at first, um, it was kind of switching, and I remember like I would have a little bit more sweets, or I would have a lot more CBD and different things, and so it does sometimes take switching to something that is better for you than the alcohol, but still not great, and then dialing that back.
00:07:05.519 --> 00:07:07.439
Uh, so I did that first.
00:07:07.920 --> 00:07:12.800
I think that's really important, and I've shared this many times with my sugar addiction.
00:07:12.800 --> 00:07:17.360
Like the the sugar and the gluten, it would talk to me from the break room.
00:07:17.360 --> 00:07:20.800
I just had to have everything I could get my hands on.
00:07:20.800 --> 00:07:30.560
And I replaced it with fruit, even though fruit didn't taste as sweet because my taste buds were so hyper palatable at that point from all the sugar.
00:07:30.560 --> 00:07:33.680
I ate fruit like it was nobody's business.
00:07:33.680 --> 00:07:43.600
Like the amount of blueberries and strawberries and watermelon I ate, those are probably the three best things to start with because they have the lowest amount of sugar.
00:07:43.600 --> 00:07:50.240
Um, but a lot of times we need to have some kind of replacement as we're transitioning.
00:07:50.240 --> 00:07:59.199
Because as we're going to talk about, there's chemistry going on that is sending these cravings and these addictive feelings, right?
00:07:59.439 --> 00:08:02.560
So being prepared, always making sure I had a mock tail.
00:08:02.560 --> 00:08:04.240
Now I can go places and I feel confident.
00:08:04.240 --> 00:08:07.839
Like if they don't have something I can drink, I just drink water and that's completely fine.
00:08:07.839 --> 00:08:14.480
But at the time, I would literally think ahead like, what do I need to have so that I don't feel left out?
00:08:14.480 --> 00:08:16.160
And that's that's what I did.
00:08:16.160 --> 00:08:19.439
I always made sure that there was something I could have when I was there.
00:08:19.680 --> 00:08:20.079
Yeah.
00:08:20.079 --> 00:08:24.000
And okay, maybe you're listening and you're like, what is the big deal?
00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:27.600
Women in Italy drink a glass of wine every night.
00:08:27.600 --> 00:08:31.120
They have forever, and they have, you know, one of the best lifespans.
00:08:31.120 --> 00:08:42.320
Um, Italians live completely different lives, they walk probably four to six hours a day up and down hills carrying their groceries.
00:08:42.320 --> 00:08:46.559
They do not have pesticide-laden wine like we do.
00:08:46.559 --> 00:08:48.320
Our wine is so toxic.
00:08:48.320 --> 00:08:53.120
If you drink California wine, I'm sorry, it's very toxic and bad for you.
00:08:53.120 --> 00:08:55.840
And so there's all kinds of issues.
00:08:55.840 --> 00:08:57.759
And then we eat the standard American diet.
00:08:57.759 --> 00:09:00.480
So we already have blood sugar dysregulation.
00:09:00.480 --> 00:09:11.120
And one of the biggest reasons women struggle with sleep and perimenopause and beyond is because of alcohol, because of that blood sugar dysregulation.
00:09:11.120 --> 00:09:21.360
And I I would be remiss if I didn't mention alcohol is the number one modifiable risk factor for developing breast cancer.
00:09:21.360 --> 00:09:26.159
Estrogen is not the enemy, alcohol is, unfortunately.
00:09:26.159 --> 00:09:27.600
Yeah.
00:09:28.159 --> 00:09:29.039
People need to know that.
00:09:29.600 --> 00:09:31.679
They do, and nobody tells them.
00:09:31.679 --> 00:09:34.720
The doctors don't tell them, the oncologists don't tell them.
00:09:34.720 --> 00:09:37.039
It like it drives me crazy.
00:09:37.039 --> 00:09:41.120
Why is the oncologist not telling you to stop drinking alcohol?
00:09:41.120 --> 00:09:43.519
It's the number one modifiable risk factor.
00:09:43.519 --> 00:09:50.000
Like it doubles and triples your chance of developing breast cancer and recurrence dependent.
00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:51.519
It's dose dependent.
00:09:51.519 --> 00:09:54.720
So the more you drink, the higher your risk.
00:09:54.720 --> 00:09:56.639
And that includes binge drinking.
00:09:56.639 --> 00:10:04.000
So you could be good all week, but if you're partying on the weekends, that is just as bad as two glasses every single night.
00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:07.200
So we cannot drink the way men drink.
00:10:07.200 --> 00:10:08.159
We just can't.
00:10:08.159 --> 00:10:08.720
Yeah.
00:10:09.200 --> 00:10:15.679
And I that was where that was the first sign for me, too, was I was like, okay, I'm gonna get through Monday through Thursday, and Thursday night, I'm gonna be able to have a drink.
00:10:15.679 --> 00:10:18.639
And I literally I got to the point where I couldn't wait for Thursday.
00:10:18.639 --> 00:10:25.360
And then it would be like four o'clock, and then it'd be three o'clock, and be two o'clock, and then it'd be noon on Thursday, and I'm like, okay, this is where you know you have a problem.
00:10:25.360 --> 00:10:30.080
You're addicted to you're addicted to that dopamine hit that you're getting.
00:10:30.320 --> 00:10:35.039
Yeah, so let's talk about that because there really is no shame here.
00:10:35.039 --> 00:10:39.679
This is a chemical situation that's happening in your body.
00:10:39.679 --> 00:10:51.440
Your body is missing certain things, and alcohol gives you that temporary relief because it numbs certain nerves and emotions, it dulls things down.
00:10:51.440 --> 00:10:55.120
That's why it feels good to have the cocktail at 5 p.m.
00:10:55.120 --> 00:11:06.240
But long term it kills off your good microbiome, which is creating your neurotransmitters, your dopamine and serotonin and GABA.
00:11:06.240 --> 00:11:10.960
And so long term, you're missing these essential neurotransmitters.
00:11:10.960 --> 00:11:17.600
And so, short term you keep going for that relief, but long term you're making it worse.
00:11:17.600 --> 00:11:19.919
It's a terrible vicious cycle.
00:11:20.080 --> 00:11:25.600
Yeah, I usually wake up with anxiety the next day, and I would cope with that anxiety by having a drink later on that night.
00:11:25.600 --> 00:11:29.679
And then I'd be like, oh, the anxiety's gone, but then it's back again the next day.
00:11:29.679 --> 00:11:32.879
So you just have to pay attention to what it's doing to your body.
00:11:32.879 --> 00:11:36.799
A lot of times it's crappy sleep, you just feel puffy and gross.
00:11:37.200 --> 00:11:38.000
Yeah, yeah.
00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:40.240
And we don't talk about dopamine enough.
00:11:40.240 --> 00:11:49.519
I think everybody understands serotonin because of antidepressants, they make you feel happy and you know, motivated to do things.
00:11:49.519 --> 00:11:57.840
GABA is our calming neurotransmitter, but dopamine is essential for motivation and reward.
00:11:57.840 --> 00:12:01.519
We do a lot of things based on a dopamine hit.
00:12:01.519 --> 00:12:05.440
And the truth of it is scrolling on our phones.
00:12:05.440 --> 00:12:14.000
Yes, since social media really came into our daily existence, like it is it's part of our daily lives at this point.
00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:16.080
We can't even check your email.
00:12:16.080 --> 00:12:16.879
Right.
00:12:16.879 --> 00:12:29.120
So you get little dopamine hits every time you like something when you're scrolling, every time you hit that heart or that thumbs up, it's a dopamine hit.
00:12:29.120 --> 00:12:34.879
And unfortunately, what happens is the dopamine receptors they get saturated.
00:12:34.879 --> 00:12:41.360
And so then you no longer feel that good feeling when you continue to scroll.
00:12:41.360 --> 00:12:44.320
And so you keep scrolling because you want that feeling back.
00:12:44.320 --> 00:12:45.919
You're like, where's the dopamine hit?
00:12:45.919 --> 00:12:46.960
Where's the dopamine hit?
00:12:46.960 --> 00:12:54.159
Yeah, and you have to wait for those hormone receptors to become unsaturated again and to feel that again.
00:12:54.159 --> 00:12:57.360
And so that can be a chase that happens.
00:12:57.360 --> 00:13:05.679
And the same thing happens with alcohol and sugar, like you mentioned earlier, you needed more to have that same feeling.
00:13:05.679 --> 00:13:09.039
So you you need more and you need more and you need more.
00:13:09.039 --> 00:13:12.320
And at some point, we have to say enough is enough.
00:13:12.320 --> 00:13:13.759
Like this is crazy.
00:13:13.759 --> 00:13:20.399
It is time to reset our dopamine receptors and have some sensitivity again, right?
00:13:20.639 --> 00:13:20.879
Yeah.
00:13:20.879 --> 00:13:25.919
And I if you're listening to this and you're like, well, I feel great, but I drink every day.
00:13:25.919 --> 00:13:31.039
It also, another thing that it did for me was it really helped my cycles.
00:13:31.039 --> 00:13:35.519
Like every month I saw my cycle improve, improve, improve.
00:13:35.519 --> 00:13:41.279
Um, and here we are, you know, 17 months later, and I my cycle is at the best that it's ever been.
00:13:41.279 --> 00:13:43.840
It actually comes every 28 days like it's supposed to.
00:13:43.840 --> 00:13:47.840
And it was down to like 22, between 22 and 24 days for a while.
00:13:47.840 --> 00:13:49.600
So it does really make a difference.
00:13:49.600 --> 00:13:55.519
So if you're listening to this and you're like, I don't need to give up alcohol because I feel great mentally, awesome for you.
00:13:55.519 --> 00:13:57.200
But there's probably some other things.
00:13:57.200 --> 00:14:00.159
You're asleep, you're probably tired, your cycle's probably messed up.
00:14:00.159 --> 00:14:02.639
Some things you don't want to admit are not right.
00:14:02.639 --> 00:14:08.399
So if you're not tracking your cycle, we talked about this last week, track your cycle because then you're gonna start to notice.
00:14:08.399 --> 00:14:17.440
And you'll hold on to those little things because that's what I did too was I would go to weddings and I would go to parties and different things, and I would wake up the next day feeling really good.
00:14:17.440 --> 00:14:23.279
And I would hold on to that at the next event that I went to or the next book club that I skipped the drink.
00:14:23.279 --> 00:14:30.080
And I was able to be like, Well, I'm gonna go to bed tonight without anxiety, and I'm gonna wake up tomorrow without anxiety and I'm gonna feel good.
00:14:30.080 --> 00:14:32.080
And so that was what I held on to.
00:14:32.080 --> 00:14:37.600
And I would literally talk to God at places, and I still do, but I did it a lot heavier.
00:14:37.600 --> 00:14:42.879
I relied on him a lot more in the beginning, and I would just literally say, like, please, Holy Spirit, get me through this.
00:14:42.879 --> 00:14:48.240
Like, just help me through it, get the little devil off my shoulder that's gonna try to get me to get alcohol in my drink today.
00:14:49.039 --> 00:14:51.440
Oh my gosh, you hit on so many important points.
00:14:51.600 --> 00:14:53.440
I know, sorry, I kind of went on a tangent there.
00:14:53.759 --> 00:14:56.159
No, that is a really important point.
00:14:56.159 --> 00:15:16.639
Some women they don't feel the mood changes that are happening, but they're suffering from heavy periods or really painful periods or fibroids or endometriosis, and now they're on all the drugs for that and having surgery for those things, and literally it could be your alcohol intake.
00:15:16.639 --> 00:15:22.000
So let me just break that down because some women are like, that doesn't even make any sense.
00:15:22.000 --> 00:15:24.639
How does alcohol affect my uterus?
00:15:24.639 --> 00:15:26.240
I promise you it does.
00:15:26.240 --> 00:15:36.960
So the liver is very much responsible for alcohol metabolism, it's also responsible for estrogen metabolism.
00:15:36.960 --> 00:15:44.639
So our body will break down anything exogenous before anything endogenous.
00:15:44.639 --> 00:15:45.840
What does that mean?
00:15:45.840 --> 00:16:02.399
It means if you are bringing something into your body, especially toxins, alcohol, medications, drugs, your liver is gonna prefer to metabolize those first because it wants to protect you and it will put estrogen on the back burner.
00:16:02.399 --> 00:16:04.320
It will say, we can't deal with you right now.
00:16:04.320 --> 00:16:22.559
And your estrogen levels will start to rise and build up, and you will get crazy high estrogen levels, which feeds too much growth in the endometrium and in those fibroids and in the endometriosis, and then you can start to have these symptoms, you know, from the uterus.
00:16:22.559 --> 00:16:26.720
And most women are not putting two to two together.
00:16:26.720 --> 00:16:29.679
I did not learn this as an OBGYN, you guys.
00:16:29.679 --> 00:16:34.399
I had to go on and study at the Cleveland Clinic Institute for Functional Medicine.
00:16:34.399 --> 00:16:41.360
And the day I learned this, I just I can still remember being in that conference room going, What?
00:16:41.360 --> 00:16:43.200
Why don't I know this?
00:16:43.200 --> 00:16:45.919
Why don't I know this as a gynecologist?
00:16:45.919 --> 00:16:48.879
This is so wrong that I wasn't taught this.
00:16:48.879 --> 00:16:58.639
So, like I'm on a mission to share it with everybody because you need to understand that what you're putting in your body affects your hormone levels.
00:16:58.639 --> 00:17:03.200
It affects how your hormone levels, you know, come or go.
00:17:03.200 --> 00:17:07.519
It's not just about how much you're taking in or how much you're making.
00:17:07.519 --> 00:17:09.680
It's are you breaking it down properly?
00:17:09.680 --> 00:17:12.000
Are you accumulating it?
00:17:12.000 --> 00:17:17.119
And you have way more say in it than the doctors tell you.
00:17:17.119 --> 00:17:19.680
So that's just a really important point.
00:17:19.680 --> 00:17:31.680
I'm really glad you brought that out because that's one of the first things we see with our clients is we get them to go 30 days without alcohol, and they're like, oh my gosh, my period wasn't painful.
00:17:31.680 --> 00:17:33.680
Like, I didn't have raging PMS.
00:17:33.680 --> 00:17:35.039
I didn't hate my husband.
00:17:35.039 --> 00:17:36.400
What's that about?
00:17:36.559 --> 00:17:39.680
I'm like, oh, because he got rid of sugar and alcohol.
00:17:39.680 --> 00:17:40.720
Yeah, exactly.
00:17:40.720 --> 00:17:50.480
And it's okay um to have support and to celebrate the fact that every day, I mean, maybe you've only been one week alcohol free, but that is okay.
00:17:50.480 --> 00:17:55.519
And it took me, I announced that 11 months uh that I had been alcohol free for 11 months.
00:17:55.519 --> 00:18:00.079
So for 11 months, I had a support system behind the scenes, but I didn't put it out there on social media.
00:18:00.079 --> 00:18:03.200
I think it was one of those things where like I needed to figure out what it was gonna be.
00:18:03.200 --> 00:18:07.920
And I remember when I made the post, I put very frankly, I don't know if alcohol is gone for me forever.
00:18:07.920 --> 00:18:11.200
You know, you can't, you know, I can't look into the future.
00:18:11.200 --> 00:18:14.720
Um, but I know that I just feel better without it.
00:18:14.720 --> 00:18:18.000
So here we are, we just continue on and I'm okay with it.
00:18:18.000 --> 00:18:25.279
I went, um, there's been a couple of times in the last couple of months where I've been at stuff and you just realize that you you don't even think about it.
00:18:25.279 --> 00:18:29.200
Like I used to really have to pump myself up and now I don't have to do that anymore.
00:18:29.200 --> 00:18:30.880
And that's what's nice about it.
00:18:31.119 --> 00:18:32.160
It's freedom, right?
00:18:32.319 --> 00:18:33.839
Yeah, it's total freedom.
00:18:33.839 --> 00:18:35.759
Yeah, it feels really good.
00:18:36.000 --> 00:18:36.720
It does.
00:18:36.720 --> 00:18:43.200
And I used to think freedom was drinking whatever I wanted, eating whatever I wanted.
00:18:43.200 --> 00:18:52.720
And I felt so deprived and like I didn't have freedom because I couldn't eat gluten, I couldn't have a cocktail because I was on call or whatever.
00:18:52.720 --> 00:18:56.960
And I just I had to reframe what I was saying to myself.
00:18:56.960 --> 00:19:06.240
Instead of um, instead of saying like I can't have this, I choose not to have it because I actually feel better.
00:19:06.240 --> 00:19:12.640
And there's so much freedom in choosing something that is good for your body.
00:19:12.640 --> 00:19:13.119
Yep.
00:19:13.200 --> 00:19:16.559
And now we have freedom to have joy without having a substance.
00:19:16.880 --> 00:19:17.359
Yes.
00:19:17.359 --> 00:19:24.000
And, you know, trying to follow our notes today, but the Holy Spirit is guiding our conversation.
00:19:24.000 --> 00:19:24.880
I know.
00:19:24.880 --> 00:19:40.079
I love, I always love that, but um, something that we had written in here, I just want to read because it's we wrote, alcohol is often framed as self-care, but biologically and spiritually, it's a counterfeit comfort.
00:19:40.079 --> 00:19:45.599
So I want to talk about these counterfeits because they show up a lot in our lives.
00:19:45.599 --> 00:19:52.240
We talked about this, how we feel like we're getting relaxed and relief and comforted.
00:19:52.240 --> 00:19:59.039
But really, all we're getting is poor sleep, hormone imbalance, anxiety, inflammation throughout our body.
00:19:59.039 --> 00:19:59.680
We feel terribly.
00:19:59.680 --> 00:20:04.400
Puffy in the mornings, and we get emotionally numb.
00:20:04.400 --> 00:20:09.119
I I put a story up recently because I just I had to reshare it.
00:20:09.119 --> 00:20:10.079
It was so good.
00:20:10.079 --> 00:20:21.599
It was like when you drink, you think you're doing it to um enjoy people more, but what you're actually doing is you're tolerating people you wouldn't tolerate sober.
00:20:21.680 --> 00:20:24.640
I'm like, oh, that's so good.
00:20:24.960 --> 00:20:25.279
Right?
00:20:25.279 --> 00:20:28.880
Like, let's call the truth the truth.
00:20:28.880 --> 00:20:29.119
Yeah.
00:20:29.279 --> 00:20:38.640
So I also think it that kind of leads to quantity over quality because sometimes we look at like we need to have this huge friend circle.
00:20:38.640 --> 00:20:53.359
And now that my friend circle is a lot smaller, they're much more qualified, like quantity-based relationships, or and I get so much more from them, and they're all God-given relationships.
00:20:53.359 --> 00:20:57.920
And I know I can go to them anytime I'm feeling spiritually attacked.
00:20:57.920 --> 00:21:04.960
And when I pull away from those relationships, those people should know that I am probably getting spiritually attacked and I don't want to tell them.
00:21:04.960 --> 00:21:08.640
Um, and so it's important to have those relationships in your life.
00:21:08.960 --> 00:21:09.359
Yeah.
00:21:09.359 --> 00:21:28.000
I just reading that post just pointed out to me that alcohol blunts our discernment and our sensitivity and our ability to spiritually uh read another person's spirit, like it really does cloud your judgment, right?
00:21:28.000 --> 00:21:34.079
So, and it replaces the dependence on God with dependence on a substance.
00:21:34.079 --> 00:21:42.480
So, what we see in our clients is they they're ashamed, they pray less, they don't want to admit.
00:21:42.480 --> 00:21:57.279
And anytime you are living in that shame of darkness and not wanting to admit anything, you're gonna retreat, you're going to be alone, and that is where the devil really comes in and starts working.
00:21:57.279 --> 00:22:00.160
So, like, we have to bring it to the light.
00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:05.440
We have to just say, like, oh, I think I'm, you know, drinking too much at this point.
00:22:05.440 --> 00:22:09.200
I think I'm using it as a comfort or as a replacement.
00:22:09.200 --> 00:22:14.720
And like, God, will you help me figure this out and come in and deliver me from this?
00:22:14.720 --> 00:22:23.279
And just get really honest about that because the more that we can shine the light on this, the more freedom that we're gonna have.
00:22:23.279 --> 00:22:24.319
Absolutely.
00:22:24.319 --> 00:22:25.519
Yeah, 100%.
00:22:25.519 --> 00:22:32.319
So the the last thing we wanted to talk about is why white knuckling never works.
00:22:32.319 --> 00:22:46.880
So we talk about this with our clients because we meet as a team and we want our clients to be so successful, and time and time again, and I'm completely um oh, what's the word?
00:22:46.880 --> 00:22:48.240
Guilty of this.
00:22:48.559 --> 00:22:49.039
Yeah.
00:22:49.279 --> 00:22:51.200
Look at me trying to block it out.
00:22:51.200 --> 00:22:57.200
This all or nothing mentality of like, I can't cut it out, I can't just get rid of it.
00:22:57.200 --> 00:23:01.279
If it's in the house, I have to eat it all, so I can't even have it.
00:23:01.279 --> 00:23:04.880
And so I think we've talked about this before.
00:23:04.880 --> 00:23:06.960
There's two types of personalities.
00:23:06.960 --> 00:23:14.960
There's the people who can have alcohol around and they won't drink it, but then there are people who are like, if it's around, I'm gonna drink it.
00:23:14.960 --> 00:23:24.319
So we need to stop white knuckling and trying to like just willpower our way through it and really invite God in, don't we?
00:23:24.319 --> 00:23:25.279
Yeah, we do.
00:23:25.440 --> 00:23:32.960
And I think you have to um learn to take it one step at a time and one day at a time.
00:23:32.960 --> 00:23:37.680
So something that you and I have been working on over the last year is just focusing on today.
00:23:37.680 --> 00:23:41.119
Like tomorrow's problems are gonna be there, whether we want them or not.
00:23:41.119 --> 00:23:47.440
And so um we've gotten really good at calling each other out, like we're worrying about you know, next week and it doesn't really matter.
00:23:47.440 --> 00:23:54.240
We just gotta do we have everything we need to do today, and just doing one thing at a time.
00:23:54.240 --> 00:23:58.079
And so if it's alcohol, stick with alcohol until you feel really comfortable.
00:23:58.079 --> 00:23:59.279
If it's gluten, stick with that.
00:23:59.279 --> 00:24:00.799
If it's sugar, stick with that.
00:24:00.799 --> 00:24:07.359
I would not recommend um this is just personal, uh, doing alcohol and sugar all at the same time.
00:24:07.359 --> 00:24:11.119
Like you will, you will probably fail.
00:24:11.119 --> 00:24:12.799
Like it will be really hard.
00:24:12.799 --> 00:24:17.200
So, because you're like, well, I can't have the alcohol, I can't have the cookie, I can't have like anything.
00:24:17.200 --> 00:24:18.960
So doing one thing at a time.
00:24:18.960 --> 00:24:20.240
That is my recommendation.
00:24:20.480 --> 00:24:21.440
Yeah, it's hard.
00:24:21.440 --> 00:24:28.480
You have to get to know your personality and get to know your triggers and how you handle things.
00:24:28.480 --> 00:24:35.039
And so it takes some self-reflection and like looking at past decisions and behaviors.
00:24:35.039 --> 00:24:37.920
And oh my gosh, I'm so excited we got Dr.
00:24:37.920 --> 00:24:44.079
Russ Irwin coming because he is the trauma expert in the Christian space.
00:24:44.079 --> 00:25:12.640
Oh my gosh, you guys, I cannot wait for this conversation because I know I wanted to talk about trauma on a deeper level and how it affects our neurochemistry and our hormones and our ability to make decisions, but I needed it to have a biblical perspective because that piece, if we're not nurturing the soul and recognizing that the spirit sometimes can be broken and detached, then we're not actually gonna heal, right?
00:25:12.640 --> 00:25:19.519
Like it's more than just the body keeping the score and reprocessing the stuff that happened to you as a child.
00:25:19.519 --> 00:25:25.759
Like it is repairing your spirit and nurturing your soul.
00:25:25.759 --> 00:25:38.880
And so I'm really excited for that conversation because that is a deeper piece of why we continue to reach for the sugar or the alcohol or the organic, gluten-free Cheetos.
00:25:38.880 --> 00:25:41.359
Hello, I was on that kick last week.
00:25:41.359 --> 00:25:44.880
Like we justify in our head, oh my gosh, it's gluten-free.
00:25:44.880 --> 00:25:46.319
Oh my gosh, it's organic.
00:25:46.319 --> 00:25:48.319
So let me eat a whole bag of Cheetos.
00:25:48.319 --> 00:25:49.200
Like, what?
00:25:49.200 --> 00:25:50.240
For real?
00:25:50.240 --> 00:25:50.799
I know.
00:25:50.799 --> 00:25:53.680
But our mind plays these tricks on us.
00:25:53.680 --> 00:26:01.839
And the reality is you have to forgive yourself and not have shame around that.
00:26:01.839 --> 00:26:05.680
You're like, oh, that was a curious choice, what I did last week.
00:26:05.680 --> 00:26:07.200
It was the holidays.
00:26:07.200 --> 00:26:08.720
I was a little lonely.
00:26:08.720 --> 00:26:11.680
I have a lot of trauma around December.
00:26:11.680 --> 00:26:15.359
And so I just gave myself grace and I moved on.
00:26:15.519 --> 00:26:16.480
But you got back on track.
00:26:16.480 --> 00:26:18.640
So actually, when I was talking, I was thinking about that.
00:26:18.640 --> 00:26:19.359
Like, it's okay.
00:26:19.359 --> 00:26:31.279
So let's say, you know, you make it six months, even or even six days, whatever it is, and you don't have sugar, alcohol, whatever you get out of this conversation, and you have sugar or you have alcohol, that's okay.
00:26:31.279 --> 00:26:33.680
Like, have it and move on.
00:26:33.680 --> 00:26:35.839
Like, we say this so much.
00:26:35.839 --> 00:26:41.119
Um, our nutritionist Morgan and I are constantly preaching this to the patients, like, move on.
00:26:41.119 --> 00:26:43.359
Like, that's okay that you screwed up yesterday.
00:26:43.359 --> 00:26:44.960
Today's a new day, move on.
00:26:45.200 --> 00:26:45.599
Yes.
00:26:45.599 --> 00:26:54.400
When you vociverate on the past and just like you chew on it and you just, oh my gosh, you can't get over it.
00:26:54.400 --> 00:26:55.839
That is shame.
00:26:55.839 --> 00:27:07.119
You are stuck in a downward spiral, and you have to learn how to pull yourself out of that or get some friends that you can be fully honest with to help pull you out of that.
00:27:07.119 --> 00:27:07.279
Yeah.
00:27:07.279 --> 00:27:11.039
Because there's just there's no condemnation in Christ.
00:27:11.039 --> 00:27:16.720
He forgives us, he took away our sins and he continues to.
00:27:16.720 --> 00:27:18.079
That's what I had to learn.
00:27:18.079 --> 00:27:27.359
It's like if he didn't just wash away my past, he knows all the crap I'm gonna do now and in the future, and he's already paid the price for that.
00:27:27.359 --> 00:27:30.799
So give yourself some grace and move on.
00:27:30.799 --> 00:27:31.759
Yeah, exactly.
00:27:31.920 --> 00:27:36.720
Okay, I want to read something because um he wrote it in here and I don't want to miss it because it's a really good point.
00:27:36.720 --> 00:27:37.119
Okay.
00:27:37.119 --> 00:27:43.680
You can't pray away a dopamine deficit and you can't supplement your way out of a spiritual avoidance.
00:27:43.680 --> 00:27:45.119
I feel like that's so good.
00:27:45.839 --> 00:27:47.920
Isn't that important to understand?
00:27:47.920 --> 00:28:11.680
Like, we need Jesus, we need to pray, we need to trust and rely on his strength, but we also are a physical body with physiology happening all of the time that God created, and there are deficits, there are things, there are dysfunctions that need to be addressed, or you will actually feel a certain way.
00:28:11.680 --> 00:28:24.880
So you can pray for the depression spirit to be lifted, but literally, if you're not making any serotonin, or if you have a major B vitamin deficiency, the depression is gonna stay.
00:28:24.880 --> 00:28:25.200
Yeah.
00:28:25.200 --> 00:28:32.000
Like you need your vitamin D, you need your B12, you need your exercise in your serotonin production.
00:28:32.000 --> 00:28:34.079
You need all those things to happen.
00:28:34.079 --> 00:28:36.240
So did you drink water today?
00:28:36.240 --> 00:28:39.440
You know, I know it can be so simple.
00:28:39.440 --> 00:28:39.920
Yeah.
00:28:39.920 --> 00:28:42.480
You have to check off those foundations.
00:28:42.480 --> 00:29:04.160
So that's why I love testing and really just seeing exactly where your body is at this point, because here's some things that you need to think about while you're praying, and in addition to praying, we need to think about our metabolic flexibility, our ability to burn sugar or fat for fuel.
00:29:04.160 --> 00:29:06.960
We need to think about our neurochemistry.
00:29:06.960 --> 00:29:13.440
Is our microbiome healthy enough that it's making our neurotransmitters, our dopamine, our serotonin, our GABA?
00:29:13.440 --> 00:29:17.119
Are our hormones functioning properly?
00:29:17.119 --> 00:29:19.200
Do we have insulin sensitivity?
00:29:19.200 --> 00:29:22.559
Do we have estrogen dominance or issues like that?
00:29:22.559 --> 00:29:29.039
And then we can go, okay, spiritually, am I connected with other people?
00:29:29.039 --> 00:29:35.119
And am I going for that counterfeit comfort or am I really addressing it?
00:29:35.119 --> 00:29:51.519
And lastly, like we need to be in community because if you don't have someone showing up for you and holding you accountable and helping you through it, you it's easy to slide back into the darkness and into the shame.
00:29:51.839 --> 00:29:52.079
Yeah.
00:29:52.079 --> 00:29:54.160
And this is where Fast of Faith looks different.
00:29:54.160 --> 00:29:57.279
And this is why Fast of Faith is different for women.
00:29:57.279 --> 00:30:04.720
And as coaches, um, we often are shocked by how quickly cravings quiet when the body is nourished properly.
00:30:04.720 --> 00:30:12.160
And so that's super important to make sure you're getting enough protein and healthy fat, but also connecting to God at the same time.
00:30:12.960 --> 00:30:27.759
Yeah, I'll tell you, freedom feels so effortless when you're in alignment, when you you really have figured out what your body needs, you have nourished it and fueled it properly.
00:30:27.759 --> 00:30:33.759
All these bad habits and decisions, they they kind of start to go away.
00:30:33.759 --> 00:30:39.440
Like I fell off the wagon hard in Jamaica last year, or was that earlier this year?
00:30:39.440 --> 00:30:40.400
It's all a blur.
00:30:40.400 --> 00:30:42.559
Yeah, it was eight months ago.
00:30:42.559 --> 00:30:52.720
And I had to day by day just focus on giving my body what it needed to break up with the sugar and the alcohol.
00:30:52.720 --> 00:30:54.880
And that is what I've been doing for eight months.
00:30:54.880 --> 00:31:01.279
I'm like, let me just lead with healthy fats and protein, let me lead with scripture and meditation.
00:31:01.279 --> 00:31:06.480
And at some point, you're like, oh, I'm free.
00:31:06.480 --> 00:31:08.319
I don't even think about it anymore.
00:31:08.559 --> 00:31:12.319
Yeah, because freedom isn't about restriction, it's about restoration.
00:31:13.200 --> 00:31:14.720
I love that so much.
00:31:14.720 --> 00:31:15.359
Okay.
00:31:15.359 --> 00:31:20.640
So we what else do we need to talk about here?
00:31:22.319 --> 00:31:23.519
Let me give All right.
00:31:23.519 --> 00:31:24.640
So here's what I'm gonna ask you.
00:31:24.640 --> 00:31:26.160
That's how we're gonna wrap it up today.
00:31:26.160 --> 00:31:30.880
If a woman is listening right now and thinking, this is me, what would you say to her?
00:31:34.000 --> 00:31:43.680
Cravings will go away when your body feels safe and supported, and when you get your physiology back in alignment.
00:31:43.680 --> 00:31:45.680
I always have to pull in the medical piece.
00:31:45.680 --> 00:31:47.119
I'm a doctor, right?
00:31:47.119 --> 00:31:49.920
So we have to have both pieces of it.
00:31:49.920 --> 00:31:59.759
You have to get your body functioning efficiently, get things in alignment, get balanced, and then you also have to nourish the spirit.
00:31:59.759 --> 00:32:10.559
So at Fast of Faith, we always say, you know, we we fast the body, but we feast or nourish the soul because that piece is absolutely essential.
00:32:10.559 --> 00:32:16.480
Your soul is crying out for more, and you may or may not realize it.
00:32:16.480 --> 00:32:23.119
You may completely have numbed it down from alcohol, and so you can't even hear anything.
00:32:23.119 --> 00:32:36.480
Um, that's something we hear from our clients all the time, and it was a huge epiphany I had a decade ago was when you feel like crap all the time, you don't even know what good feels like.
00:32:36.480 --> 00:32:44.480
No, and then when you clean up the landscape and you try to put something bad back in, it's so much more obvious.
00:32:44.480 --> 00:32:56.799
Like when I lived on pizza and alcohol and you know, candy and Mountain Dew, like eating Taco Bell didn't make me feel any different because I already felt like crap.
00:32:56.799 --> 00:32:59.519
But I thought that was my standard, my norm.
00:32:59.519 --> 00:33:04.960
So now if I eat Taco Bell, like I'm feeling it for 24 hours.
00:33:04.960 --> 00:33:07.440
It is so much more obvious.
00:33:07.680 --> 00:33:08.319
Yeah.
00:33:08.319 --> 00:33:10.240
Um, isn't that right?
00:33:10.240 --> 00:33:11.359
Yeah, it is.
00:33:11.359 --> 00:33:15.039
Um, so sugar and alcohol don't have power over you.
00:33:15.039 --> 00:33:20.319
If that if you get anything out of this um episode today, that's what we want you to get out of it.
00:33:20.319 --> 00:33:23.839
And they've just been filling a gap that God wants to heal.
00:33:24.880 --> 00:33:25.279
Yes.
00:33:25.279 --> 00:33:27.519
I we need to make that declaration.
00:33:27.519 --> 00:33:32.640
Like Jesus has the power and the authority, he's given it to us.
00:33:32.640 --> 00:33:39.200
So we don't have to have strongholds in our lives, we don't have to have sugar addictions, alcohol addictions.
00:33:39.200 --> 00:33:45.519
And even if you don't think that they're an addiction, you don't have to have a go-to that you feel pulled toward.
00:33:45.519 --> 00:33:48.079
Like you can literally have freedom from all of that.
00:33:48.079 --> 00:33:56.960
So if this conversation hit you at all, if you're feeling a little uncomfortable or even a little mad at us, like screw off.
00:33:56.960 --> 00:33:58.960
I don't like anything that you said.
00:33:58.960 --> 00:34:04.880
You just might need to be in the Fast of Faith sisterhood.
00:34:04.880 --> 00:34:13.199
You might need to wrap your brain around this a little bit more because we need to go deeper.
00:34:13.199 --> 00:34:16.639
Like, I don't want you to struggle another year.
00:34:16.639 --> 00:34:20.079
I don't want you to have another failed New Year's resolution.
00:34:20.079 --> 00:34:29.519
I don't want you to drop 20 pounds and then gain 30 back and end 2026 frustrated, like my body failed me again.
00:34:29.519 --> 00:34:31.519
It's it sucks.
00:34:31.519 --> 00:34:35.840
Like it doesn't have to be that way, but you do have to make a decision.
00:34:35.840 --> 00:34:39.199
You have to make different choices.
00:34:39.199 --> 00:34:50.079
And those different choices do come from um breaking through those strongholds and figuring out what you believe about yourself and sometimes renewing that and changing it.
00:34:50.079 --> 00:34:56.239
So, like, literally, I think this episode is dropping the first day of our five-day challenge.
00:34:56.239 --> 00:34:59.440
So it's literally not too late to jump in.
00:34:59.440 --> 00:35:15.199
It is five days of a live challenge where we are renewing your mind, we are figuring out what's holding you back, and maybe it's not sugar and alcohol, maybe it's trauma, maybe it's just your current situation that you're in, maybe it is a gut you need to heal.
00:35:15.199 --> 00:35:18.800
Like we unpack all the things, so jump in there.
00:35:18.800 --> 00:35:38.079
It is not too late, but literally, I want you to just meditate on this scripture the rest of the day and see what God says to you because there is so much power in connecting with women doing the same thing that you're doing, not just going through what you're going through.
00:35:38.079 --> 00:35:40.559
This is not an AA meeting, right?
00:35:40.559 --> 00:35:43.760
You know, this is freedom.
00:35:43.760 --> 00:35:52.000
Like we have figured it out, we've cracked the code, we have broken through, we've and we're on the other side, and we want you there with us.
00:35:52.000 --> 00:35:54.960
So, 1 Corinthians 10, 23.
00:35:54.960 --> 00:36:00.400
Everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial.
00:36:00.400 --> 00:36:02.800
God gives us free will.
00:36:02.800 --> 00:36:09.039
You can eat the sugar, you can drink the wine and the cocktail and the shot, whatever you want.
00:36:09.039 --> 00:36:13.840
It doesn't mean it's good for you, it doesn't mean your body's gonna behave properly.
00:36:13.840 --> 00:36:17.039
Um so think about that today.
00:36:17.039 --> 00:36:26.239
Think about the fact that your free will got you where you are, but your free will can also bring you to Christ and bring true freedom.
00:36:26.400 --> 00:36:28.719
So that was so good.
00:36:28.719 --> 00:36:41.519
And if you're listening to this and you're like, I don't, I don't even drink alcohol, whatever it is that you're struggling with, put that in this conversation because this can be relatable to anything that you're addicted to and you don't even know it.
00:36:42.000 --> 00:36:44.800
Oh, yes, shopping, right?
00:36:44.800 --> 00:36:46.079
Yeah, it's bad decisions.
00:36:46.559 --> 00:36:47.679
Endless scrolling.
00:36:47.679 --> 00:36:50.000
I mean, we could go on, so yes.
00:36:50.239 --> 00:36:50.960
Oh my gosh.
00:36:50.960 --> 00:36:51.280
Okay.
00:36:51.280 --> 00:36:53.280
All right, ladies, we love you.
00:36:53.280 --> 00:36:54.719
Have an amazing week.
00:36:54.719 --> 00:36:56.320
Go be Christ hands to serve.
00:36:56.320 --> 00:36:57.440
Yep, bye, guys.
