What if your dental appointment felt less like a procedure and more like a reset?
In this episode of Wellness Dentistry: Oral Health for Longevity, Dr. Katie To sits down with Dr. Kelly J. Blodgett, a biological and holistic dentist based in Oregon whose approach to patient care is quietly changing what people believe is possible inside a dental practice. His patients fly in from across the country and around the world, and after hearing this conversation, it's easy to understand why.
4 KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Feeling heard is part of the healing. Dr. Blodgett's new patients spend their first visit in a dedicated wellness wing, complete with zero-gravity chairs, PEMF therapy, and red light beds, before any dental conversation begins. The goal is simple: get to know the whole person first. When people feel genuinely understood, hope follows. And hope, he explains, is a healing state.
- Informed consent should include all your options. Most providers are only legally required to present options they consider reasonable, which often leaves patients in the dark about alternatives. Dr. Blodgett and Dr. Katie believe every patient deserves the full picture so they can make choices that are right for their body and their life.
- Your emotional state affects your healing outcomes. Operating from fear, shame, or anger keeps the nervous system in a stress response. Dr. Blodgett shares how his practice is intentionally designed to move patients out of that state and into one where real healing can happen.
- A great team is the real magic. Dr. Blodgett flew his entire team to a training retreat nine years ago, and he credits that single investment as a turning point for his practice. Culture, shared mission, and team wellness aren't extras. They're the foundation.

Welcome to the Wellness Dentist Podcast.
00:00:30.640 --> 00:00:31.039
I'm Dr.
00:00:31.120 --> 00:00:34.479
Katie Toe, and today I have a special guest.
00:00:34.640 --> 00:00:35.359
Super special.
00:00:35.439 --> 00:00:41.759
Not because I fangered him for a long time, but because he's inspired me to do things and share things on social.
00:00:42.079 --> 00:00:43.920
Because you know, we are a healthcare provider.
00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:47.200
We don't like to be on social on camera, but because of what Dr.
00:00:47.280 --> 00:00:53.439
Kelly Blochett have done and how he can help so many people spread the word, share the knowledge.
00:00:53.520 --> 00:00:54.960
And so I have him on today.
00:00:55.039 --> 00:01:01.119
It's a lot of coordination to get this happening because he's all the way from Oregon and we're here in Texas.
00:01:01.280 --> 00:01:02.240
But welcome to the show.
00:01:02.799 --> 00:01:03.439
Thank you, Katie.
00:01:03.679 --> 00:01:06.159
I man, I'm a I'm so glad to be here.
00:01:06.480 --> 00:01:07.200
Yes, thank you.
00:01:07.359 --> 00:01:10.239
And we're both at this conference with biological dentists.
00:01:10.480 --> 00:01:10.640
Yes.
00:01:10.879 --> 00:01:12.319
What is a better way to reconnect?
00:01:12.879 --> 00:01:13.359
I love it.
00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:21.280
I this is the third year in a row I've come to the IABDM conference, and the energy here is really good.
00:01:21.840 --> 00:01:26.879
And thank you for contributing because you were giving lecture yesterday to your classroom was full.
00:01:27.040 --> 00:01:29.040
People were just It was packed, yes.
00:01:29.599 --> 00:01:31.599
Simplifying ceramic implants.
00:01:31.680 --> 00:01:31.840
Yeah.
00:01:32.879 --> 00:01:47.920
It was a ton of fun, and I think that it it resonated with a lot of providers who either are new to it or wanted to have some uh simplified approaches, or people who aren't doing it at all but they're interested, you know.
00:01:48.400 --> 00:01:51.840
And what is what is a better way to learn from someone doing it daily?
00:01:52.159 --> 00:01:52.480
Yes.
00:01:52.719 --> 00:01:53.040
Yes.
00:01:53.280 --> 00:02:01.040
You have one of the most sought-after practice in the country or in the world, I would say, people flying from everywhere to see you for this procedure.
00:02:01.200 --> 00:02:05.200
So can you share with us what is how is the patient come in the first appointment?
00:02:05.359 --> 00:02:09.280
What are you sharing with them that people were surprised or shocked to hear?
00:02:10.240 --> 00:02:11.520
Good question.
00:02:11.840 --> 00:02:25.439
Um I should I should preface it by saying that I have a phenomenal team who just became certified uh as the whole team with the IABDM as biological dental practice.
00:02:25.599 --> 00:02:27.280
Uh very proud of them.
00:02:27.759 --> 00:02:42.319
They help ensure that the people who come through our front doors resonate with us and that we resonate with them to the best degree that we can before they arrive.
00:02:42.560 --> 00:02:53.599
Um I think part of what makes the experience at my practice really unique is that our new patients come on Mondays.
00:02:53.919 --> 00:03:01.759
It's a specific day of the week that we don't do anything on Mondays except meet new patients.
00:03:01.919 --> 00:03:05.199
Typically it's five new patients every Monday.
00:03:05.439 --> 00:03:15.840
And I have four team members who are, I guess you would consider them like the concierge for that two to two and a half hour experience.
00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:21.439
So they're that new patient coming in is handheld through the whole experience.
00:03:21.680 --> 00:03:33.680
Part of what makes it so unique, outside of the fact that like there's no dental stuff going on, it's you know, it's they're just there for us to get to know them and them to get to know us, is that we have a dedicated wing of our practice.
00:03:33.840 --> 00:03:35.680
We call it the wellness wing.
00:03:35.919 --> 00:03:37.840
And it's more like a spa.
00:03:38.080 --> 00:03:40.319
There's nothing dental on that side of the office.
00:03:40.400 --> 00:03:48.400
It's all like zero gravity chairs and our pulsed electromagnetic field bed and a full-body red light, infrared light bed.
00:03:48.560 --> 00:03:51.680
And that's where the new patient experience starts.
00:03:52.080 --> 00:03:58.000
So they get to go to an environment that's very settling and the colors and sounds and smells and everything.
00:03:58.080 --> 00:04:00.000
It's very spot-like.
00:04:00.319 --> 00:04:14.319
Um, and the whole point of having it start there is that we want to get to know that human being as a person, not as like a set of dental uh things to do, fillings, crowns, whatever.
00:04:14.560 --> 00:04:18.399
Um we want to know like why did they choose us?
00:04:18.639 --> 00:04:34.560
Generally, we have some sense of that before they've arrived, but we want to go deeper and get to know about the feeling and emotion side of what they've experienced that had them choose a unique practice like ours when they could go to any practice they want, you know?
00:04:35.199 --> 00:04:52.240
Um and that usually takes 20 to 40 minutes per person, where they're that oral health specialist who's guiding that experience, um is is trying to tease out the the what's and the whys for theirs their health journey.
00:04:52.800 --> 00:05:02.399
Um and that's well, and I should then say, then they come over to the dental side where we're gathering the information, you know, all the objective kind of things.
00:05:03.279 --> 00:05:19.519
When that oral health specialist transitions their story to me in 90 to 120 seconds, you know, like they're they're distilling it down to here's why they're here, you know, here's who they are, this is what they want to do, this is what we discovered in our our process together.
00:05:20.160 --> 00:05:27.680
This aha moment of like, wow, you know, you really heard me.
00:05:28.480 --> 00:05:34.720
And that's just such a unique thing in healthcare because most people are not accustomed to feeling heard.
00:05:34.959 --> 00:05:41.519
More more often than not, I would say people's experience is they are talked to, you know.
00:05:42.399 --> 00:05:46.800
Um so that's probably the biggest aha that I see.
00:05:47.120 --> 00:06:09.120
And the second thing I would share is um it's kind of a funny thing that people often say after at the end of their new patient experience before I leave, they say something to this effect, like, I can't believe that I'm like excited to go through this, you know, oral surgery protocol and getting my teeth removed and ceramic implants placed, but I feel hopeful.
00:06:09.680 --> 00:06:16.079
And you know, you and I appreciate energy and seeing the world through that lens.
00:06:16.240 --> 00:06:28.800
The value of feeling hope being an energy creating state means their body actually can heal as opposed to feeling anger or fear or shame.
00:06:28.959 --> 00:06:31.040
You cannot heal from that state of energy.
00:06:31.759 --> 00:06:36.000
So it's a very intentionally designed process.
00:06:36.480 --> 00:06:46.480
Um, now that I'm kind of stepping into the coaching world and helping practices do this, it's been really cool to see other teams that are implementing it in their own style.
00:06:46.639 --> 00:06:51.839
Uh, some of those people I've coached are here actually, and I've been able to catch up on how things are going.
00:06:51.920 --> 00:07:01.839
And it's just so I mean, I literally got chills today talking to two hygienists about the changes they've made in their practice in the past year as a result of what the work we did a year ago.
00:07:02.079 --> 00:07:08.959
And it's like I'm getting chills because it's just thrilling for me to hear that they're impacting lives more positively.
00:07:09.040 --> 00:07:10.480
You know, it's super cool.
00:07:10.800 --> 00:07:21.199
What I noticed that you asked me that, and you actually answered the quick next question I'm about to ask you is you're actually now giving back to the community a professional by teaching and coaching.
00:07:21.439 --> 00:07:26.800
And obviously, every time that you go somewhere and people see your name, they're like, I want to learn from Dr.
00:07:26.879 --> 00:07:27.360
Kelly.
00:07:27.759 --> 00:07:32.160
Here's what I noticed: people didn't know how long it took you to get here.
00:07:32.319 --> 00:07:36.959
Yeah, it's not an overnight journey, it's not a short journey, it's years or decades.
00:07:37.120 --> 00:07:39.680
So when did you start a journey to begin with?
00:07:40.560 --> 00:07:43.839
Yeah, so I'll give you a little back little background.
00:07:44.079 --> 00:07:59.759
Um, my professionally, I was like, I, you know, in college, I was so clear, I'm gonna become a psychologist, I'm gonna sit in my office in my comfy chair, you know, and talk with people about things that they want to change in their life.
00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:10.639
And, you know, I came to Christ uh April of my senior year of college, and I then two weeks later heard God call me to become a dentist and reverse the negative stereotype of dentistry.
00:08:10.800 --> 00:08:14.560
And I'm like, what on earth is this that I'm hearing in my head?
00:08:14.879 --> 00:08:17.600
And uh that's where it started.
00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:40.399
So then I had to get into dental school and do all that, but as I came out of dental school and went into residency, and and still to this day, I continue to think about how do I create more positive experiences for people, which really means they have to become owners of their own health journey.
00:08:40.480 --> 00:08:43.759
And that means we have to be present to listen to their stories.
00:08:43.919 --> 00:08:46.240
And that evolution has taken it.
00:08:46.320 --> 00:08:56.320
Well, it took me 20 years from when I started my practice to when we actually slowed down enough that we could be present and listen.
00:08:56.399 --> 00:09:14.080
And that's when we started doing those new patient experiences on Mondays only, you know, because we were trying to see new patients on any day of the week and it was chaotic, and um it has since way slowed down the pace of my practice and allowed us to be way more productive.
00:09:14.799 --> 00:09:20.000
Help people, I mean, a lot of times on my Tuesdays, I see one person, and that's it.
00:09:20.240 --> 00:09:24.399
But they make massive shifts in their health as a result of our work together.
00:09:24.720 --> 00:09:28.320
Um so that's yeah, it's been a long journey.
00:09:28.399 --> 00:09:51.840
And I mean, as it relates to communication and social media, quite frankly, like I was really opposed to starting an Instagram account, but I had team members who kept hounding me because they were watching people feel better, you know, like their achy knee got better, or you know, their brain fog cleared up or whatever, and they're like, gosh, why don't you start sharing these stories on social media?
00:09:51.919 --> 00:09:54.879
And like, okay, I'll I'll I'll I'll start it.
00:09:55.120 --> 00:09:57.120
And it really took off, you know.
00:09:57.279 --> 00:10:00.320
And I will say the first two years were tough.
00:10:01.120 --> 00:10:24.639
Because, you know, when I was presenting information about, let's say, hey, I extracted this root canal, I sent the roots in, uh, we found all these microbes in the roots, and this is that's you know, on the objective side, on the subjective side, this is what the patient shared uh between when it happened and two weeks later at their post-op visit, this is what they shared.
00:10:24.799 --> 00:10:28.000
And you know, thankfully, you can't negate either of those things.
00:10:28.159 --> 00:10:31.679
A person's truth is their truth, and objective information is what it is.
00:10:32.320 --> 00:10:34.240
And I just kept at it.
00:10:34.399 --> 00:10:46.240
So I'm like, well, it's you know, no matter whether you feel like you think root canals is the best thing ever, um, that's a fine feeling to have, but these facts are what they are.
00:10:46.399 --> 00:10:46.720
That's right.
00:10:46.960 --> 00:10:56.799
And at the very least, my opinion is uh human beings deserve to be properly informed, not only of the benefits, but also of the risks.
00:10:57.600 --> 00:10:59.679
So that then they can make an informed choice.
00:10:59.840 --> 00:11:03.039
Otherwise, the idea of informed consent is is foolish.
00:11:03.200 --> 00:11:06.559
It doesn't exist because we're not actually giving them all of the information.
00:11:07.039 --> 00:11:11.679
In a lot of places, we know informed consent is just protecting in terms of legal issues.
00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:17.120
It's not really giving the patient the information that they can make the best decision for themselves.
00:11:17.519 --> 00:11:18.240
Right, right.
00:11:18.639 --> 00:11:29.679
Well, and I did some research on this probably five years ago because I wanted to write a post about it, um, looking at what is the acceptable standard of care for informed consent.
00:11:30.080 --> 00:11:41.279
And what I found was that providers are only legally required to offer options that they consider reasonable and acceptable.
00:11:41.759 --> 00:11:51.840
So, you know, let's say uh, well, like one of the things I was using as an example is women who are pursuing breast augmentation.
00:11:52.000 --> 00:11:55.679
And like they pretty much get the option of do you want saline or do you want silicone?
00:11:55.919 --> 00:11:58.399
Nobody talks about you could do fat transfer.
00:11:59.600 --> 00:12:00.080
Why?
00:12:00.320 --> 00:12:02.159
And is it legal for them to not share that?
00:12:02.320 --> 00:12:04.480
Well, apparently it is legal for them to not share that.
00:12:04.639 --> 00:12:06.639
In my opinion, is that ethical?
00:12:06.879 --> 00:12:07.840
I don't think so.
00:12:08.159 --> 00:12:10.639
I think that you know, all options should be considered.
00:12:10.720 --> 00:12:26.240
So when a person has a tooth that's bombed out, it's abscessed, not only is the insert inside of the tooth infused with microbes, but now the the outer portion is too in the jawbone and the immune system's activated.
00:12:26.480 --> 00:12:29.519
I mean, we were trained in dental school, like, oh, do a root canal.
00:12:29.600 --> 00:12:31.679
You know, if it's restorable, do a root canal.
00:12:31.840 --> 00:12:40.639
It's like, well, have we considered and shared with the patient what the long-term ramifications are of keeping that diseased tooth that will never get better.
00:12:40.799 --> 00:12:40.960
Yeah.
00:12:41.120 --> 00:12:44.480
And we don't know what that person in five, ten years, what the health condition looked like.
00:12:44.720 --> 00:12:45.039
Totally.
00:12:45.279 --> 00:12:45.519
Right?
00:12:45.600 --> 00:12:50.639
And we don't follow up with that because to be honest, people in in America do move around.
00:12:50.799 --> 00:12:50.960
Yeah.
00:12:51.279 --> 00:12:54.799
They also don't see the same provider for a long time, like in the past.
00:12:54.960 --> 00:12:57.440
In the past, you could have the same dentist for 20 years, 30 years.
00:12:57.679 --> 00:13:00.399
And now people, because a job and opportunity move around.
00:13:00.559 --> 00:13:06.159
And so you actually didn't know the consequences or the impact of that service on their body.
00:13:06.480 --> 00:13:06.639
Right.
00:13:06.960 --> 00:13:16.879
I mean, you you and I, I'm sure, b both meet people every week where it's like, boy, I wish I could see through the lens of what things were going, what was going on 10 years ago.
00:13:17.279 --> 00:13:17.440
Yeah.
00:13:17.759 --> 00:13:22.799
And and that's not that it's impossible to collect the data, it's just very challenging a lot of times.
00:13:23.039 --> 00:13:23.120
Yeah.
00:13:23.360 --> 00:13:26.799
And every provider does different things and it's not on the same page.
00:13:26.960 --> 00:13:38.080
And this is why we love that you're sharing your knowledge, because the more people know how you practice and how you reflect on those practices, it's helped them to say, I'm gonna start out and make sure I talk about everything.
00:13:38.240 --> 00:13:38.399
Right.
00:13:38.639 --> 00:13:40.159
The patient deserves to know that.
00:13:40.399 --> 00:13:44.159
And I I can see why people coming to you because your experience is so unique.
00:13:44.320 --> 00:13:49.360
Like, to be honest, I hear so I visit so many practices, not just in the US, but like around the world.
00:13:49.440 --> 00:13:49.600
Yeah.
00:13:49.759 --> 00:13:55.840
But the wellness wing for the new patient, only see new patients on Monday, so they get your full attention.
00:13:55.919 --> 00:14:04.080
Because when I talk to my friend in medical, they're like, what do you mean you're doing a hygiene check, an exam, and then you jump in to do your surgery, and you jump in to do your new patient.
00:14:04.240 --> 00:14:05.279
Like, how do you do that?
00:14:05.440 --> 00:14:06.879
Like, they could not imagine that, right?
00:14:06.960 --> 00:14:09.759
Because they have a hospital day and they have the office day.
00:14:09.840 --> 00:14:18.159
But as a dentist, we're a surgeon, and we're also seeing the hygiene exam when a patient comes in for recare, and then we also do a new patient.
00:14:18.240 --> 00:14:20.000
I'm like, no wonder we're so stressed.
00:14:20.320 --> 00:14:22.000
It's so much present.
00:14:22.320 --> 00:14:25.840
It's so, I mean, I still remember it was trying to keep it straight.
00:14:26.240 --> 00:14:35.039
2019, you know, at that time, I had four full-time hygienists, I had an associate dentist, and then me, and then five assistants.
00:14:35.279 --> 00:14:41.679
And, you know, we had a full recare program, and we were seeing new patients every day of the week, and it was so chaotic.
00:14:41.759 --> 00:14:52.960
You know, I I I can still see, like, a uh, let's say one of the hygienists has a new patient with her, and she's like, hey, you know, I'm ready for uh the new patient exam over here, and Dr.
00:14:53.120 --> 00:14:58.480
Niche was busy doing something, I was busy doing something, and it's like this this does not work.
00:14:58.639 --> 00:15:14.799
I totally appreciate the medical model, by the way, of like we're in to do office care today, consultations and follow-ups, and you're in that energetic space of let's hope, of being present, surgery day totally different, very focused.
00:15:15.039 --> 00:15:16.000
That's right, you know.
00:15:16.159 --> 00:15:17.279
Um you're kind of in charge.
00:15:17.519 --> 00:15:18.720
And we're doing microsurgery.
00:15:18.799 --> 00:15:18.960
Yes.
00:15:19.279 --> 00:15:21.600
Because we need loops and microscope to do things.
00:15:21.840 --> 00:15:22.320
Absolutely.
00:15:22.559 --> 00:15:26.559
And so it took like at least the studies show 20 minutes to get back into zone.
00:15:26.720 --> 00:15:26.879
Yeah.
00:15:27.200 --> 00:15:28.480
So can you imagine?
00:15:28.720 --> 00:15:30.240
Sit down and be like, where am I?
00:15:30.320 --> 00:15:31.039
Like what surgery?
00:15:31.200 --> 00:15:33.039
Like, which part of the tooth line did you focus on?
00:15:33.360 --> 00:15:43.919
I used to hate the like, you know what, uh, I just need to step out for 15 minutes while you know, we're gonna let that uh that bleach in your root canal just you know ruminate for a while, like ridiculous.
00:15:44.159 --> 00:15:44.639
Ridiculous.
00:15:44.960 --> 00:15:59.360
But it's not, we talk about wellness, it's not healthy for the provider because we start wearing CGM and bio track, and we're like, why our heart rate and why is our glucose elevated doing even though we're not eating anything, right?
00:15:59.519 --> 00:16:00.879
But because we're so stressed.
00:16:01.120 --> 00:16:01.440
Totally.
00:16:01.759 --> 00:16:05.279
And that also as a healer, as a provider, is not good for the patient.
00:16:05.519 --> 00:16:09.600
Because you are not giving them the good energy because you didn't have it to begin with.
00:16:09.759 --> 00:16:09.919
Yeah.
00:16:10.159 --> 00:16:15.279
So I love the way that you designed the practice because that's truly in alignment with wellness and your philosophy.
00:16:15.519 --> 00:16:18.080
And you just mentioned your secret sausage team.
00:16:19.120 --> 00:16:20.080
They're the magic.
00:16:20.320 --> 00:16:23.840
I met them, and oh my gosh, they all on the same mission.
00:16:24.080 --> 00:16:28.960
They love each other, they support each other, and I I think a lot of biological dentists.
00:16:29.039 --> 00:16:33.840
We have a lot of dentists listen to the show, and they want to learn more CE.
00:16:34.000 --> 00:16:45.039
They want to go to more conferences and more courses, but they didn't realize that the person and the team, the team, yeah, the people on the team are what contributed the most to the success.
00:16:45.360 --> 00:16:46.159
Absolutely.
00:16:46.399 --> 00:17:13.200
You know, part of what helped my practice become like a leading, like a beaming light of what biological dentistry can look like was that when I decided to start pursuing this approach, I took my whole, this is nine years ago, I took my whole team, flew him to Utah to Judson Wall's office, and we were the weekend was the cavitations and ceramic implants weekend that he does.
00:17:13.519 --> 00:17:20.559
But I took the whole team, it was 10 of us, and you know, it was a huge expense compared to just taking myself.
00:17:21.200 --> 00:17:26.079
Uh, but by the end of the weekend, every team member's head was nodding.
00:17:26.240 --> 00:17:29.039
They're like, I I yep, I get this.
00:17:29.200 --> 00:17:31.759
This is the direction I'm in, I'm on board.
00:17:32.400 --> 00:17:35.519
And it was a total turning point for us.
00:17:35.759 --> 00:17:41.119
Um, and I think about like had I just gone by myself, nothing would have changed.
00:17:41.359 --> 00:17:41.759
That's right.
00:17:41.920 --> 00:17:44.000
Um, and I do appreciate like it's an investment.
00:17:44.160 --> 00:17:54.160
For me to bring the whole team here, fly them to Austin, there's 11 of us, you know, put them up in hotels, buy meals, it's you know, tens of thousands of dollars and a lot of our time.
00:17:54.319 --> 00:18:06.640
However, what I know is we will go back and be more synergized as a team, be more uplifted by being, you know, in the company of other people who love doing this, and have built our community.
00:18:06.799 --> 00:18:14.720
Um, it's it only has positives, you know, we can always make more money, but how we're investing our time together really matters.
00:18:15.119 --> 00:18:17.440
And uh we cannot stress that enough.
00:18:17.519 --> 00:18:25.519
And I know that's why your trainings focus a lot on team, a lot on business knowledge, which is to be honest, dentists don't get many.
00:18:25.759 --> 00:18:35.359
Then then dental business courses or how to take care of the patient experience and how to be a leader for the team, even though they that they said, I'm not a good leader.
00:18:35.440 --> 00:18:37.039
Yes, then do something about it.
00:18:37.359 --> 00:18:38.160
Yeah, yeah.
00:18:38.319 --> 00:18:48.480
I mean, most the the reality is that almost every dentist I've ever met are very coachable, um, they're very bright, they're very hardworking.
00:18:48.799 --> 00:19:02.400
So the you know, reality is too, we like when the requirements to get into and graduate from a dental program or medicine or nursing requires little to no humanistic studies.
00:19:03.200 --> 00:19:08.240
There the irony is we are uh charged with caring for human beings, you know?
00:19:08.799 --> 00:19:17.759
So that's where I feel like, or I believe, you know, why did God choose me to play this role in the human experience?
00:19:18.000 --> 00:19:49.759
Uh I think because I see through a very different lens, you know, uh I think I'm a pretty good clinician, but I think where I my heart shines in connecting with other human beings as as patients and connecting with other professionals, helping them to like grow what's possible, decrease their stress levels, help them become better leaders and see how simple that can actually be, um, and make time for their team because they weren't trained to do that.
00:19:50.079 --> 00:19:50.640
They're not.
00:19:50.880 --> 00:19:51.200
Yeah.
00:19:51.359 --> 00:19:57.359
And we meet dentists where they give their team everything and no boundary, and then they get hurt.
00:19:57.519 --> 00:20:00.720
And now they said, Oh, I don't believe in building the team because they leave these.
00:20:01.039 --> 00:20:01.440
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:20:01.599 --> 00:20:01.759
Right.
00:20:01.839 --> 00:20:02.559
You hear that all the time.
00:20:02.799 --> 00:20:09.359
And then there's t there the dentist is like, well, you know, I'm gonna I'm gonna play defense and I'm gonna see how much they dedicated.
00:20:09.839 --> 00:20:11.599
Boat, I think vote approach is wrong.
00:20:11.759 --> 00:20:18.480
You communication, you mentioned that, and the resonate and then the energies and how you live your life too.
00:20:18.640 --> 00:20:18.880
Yep.
00:20:19.039 --> 00:20:19.279
Right?
00:20:19.359 --> 00:20:23.279
They watch you, no matter how you you want to show them and teach them.
00:20:23.359 --> 00:20:27.839
They watch every move, how you be in your practice, how you're outside living your life.
00:20:28.000 --> 00:20:31.519
Yeah, you know, because you can preach all day long about wellness, but you don't practice it.
00:20:31.680 --> 00:20:32.799
Nobody's gonna believe that.
00:20:33.119 --> 00:20:34.000
True, yes.
00:20:34.160 --> 00:20:42.240
It's funny, I I was at a meeting, I guess it was last August, uh, with a bunch of other like-minded biological dentists in LA.
00:20:42.480 --> 00:20:46.640
And we all went and got in-body scans before the meeting.
00:20:47.359 --> 00:20:48.400
And uh Dr.
00:20:48.480 --> 00:20:58.559
Dominic Nischwitz went over each of our in-body scans, and it was such an aha for me to see objectively.
00:20:58.720 --> 00:21:12.799
Here's some health data that I hadn't previously appreciated, uh, and then know that I had community and support buddies who we're all gonna help each other make better lifestyle choices, nutritional choices, physical fitness choices.
00:21:12.960 --> 00:21:16.559
And then we brought it, bought an in-body and put it into my practice.
00:21:16.720 --> 00:21:28.400
Now I'm seeing the same thing with my team, where you know, people used to go out and get a Subway sandwich for lunch are now bringing in, you know, a roasted chicken breast and some sauteed vegetables and like routinely.
00:21:28.720 --> 00:21:39.039
And it's really been a cool cultural shift as a team that, you know, as I'm starting to practice this and implement it and give them the tools, then they start to do it as well.
00:21:39.200 --> 00:21:42.319
Uh it's been a really cool cultural shift for our practice.
00:21:42.640 --> 00:21:50.240
I love it when you mentioned that because our team just went to uh uh the upgrade lap by uh Dave Aspie here in town.
00:21:50.319 --> 00:21:52.400
He has a lap and we did the in body.
00:21:52.559 --> 00:21:52.799
Oh, cool.
00:21:53.039 --> 00:21:55.680
And one of our team members was like, I think I need to get back in the gym.
00:21:56.079 --> 00:21:57.440
You know, it is so powerful.
00:21:57.599 --> 00:21:59.440
Like you know, but now we see the number.
00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:00.880
And you have a goal.
00:22:00.960 --> 00:22:04.160
She's like, oh, this is my visceral fat, this is my body fat percent.
00:22:04.480 --> 00:22:05.359
I need to work on that.
00:22:05.519 --> 00:22:08.559
So I love that you mention it and you do so much for your team.
00:22:09.279 --> 00:22:11.519
Mention the wellness because the team watching us.
00:22:11.680 --> 00:22:16.160
What are the three non-negotiable daily wellness practice?
00:22:16.319 --> 00:22:21.920
Because I'm now I know everyone out there, including the patients and the provider, was like, what is Dr.
00:22:22.000 --> 00:22:24.400
Clay Blogget doing every day for himself?
00:22:24.640 --> 00:22:26.240
And it doesn't have to be three.
00:22:26.400 --> 00:22:30.319
I know it's more than three that you're doing, but what is the top three that are non-negotiable for you?
00:22:30.720 --> 00:22:32.240
Um, okay.
00:22:33.680 --> 00:22:37.680
Number one for me is playing music.
00:22:37.920 --> 00:22:42.880
So I don't have a day where I don't pick up a guitar or a bass or get on my piano or play my drums.
00:22:43.039 --> 00:22:46.240
It's like that's been a part of my life since I was five.
00:22:46.400 --> 00:22:49.519
And geez Louise, I've been playing music 50 years now.
00:22:49.680 --> 00:22:50.160
You know?
00:22:50.400 --> 00:22:52.160
It just I get into this state of like.
00:22:53.039 --> 00:22:54.079
Yes, like I love it.
00:22:54.720 --> 00:22:56.480
Mostly I pick up an electric guitar.
00:22:56.640 --> 00:23:02.640
But uh, two for me is pulsed electromagnetic field therapy.
00:23:02.880 --> 00:23:07.359
Um, I had an issue three years ago, actually three and a half years ago.
00:23:07.599 --> 00:23:13.279
I seriously thought I was gonna have to give up the practice of dentistry because I had so much neck pain.
00:23:13.440 --> 00:23:23.680
You know, I had a bike wreck maybe 15 years ago that really screwed up my neck, and it just all the years of leaning over people was adding up, and it's so, oh my gosh, it was so bad.
00:23:23.920 --> 00:23:34.799
And I discovered PEMF, uh, decided to try a unit, and the next thing you know, I'm you know buying one and using it within a month of using that thing on the daily.
00:23:35.599 --> 00:23:43.440
Uh so I bought it for the practice, but kept it at home for a month, and you know, next thing I know, it's like three, four weeks later.
00:23:43.519 --> 00:23:45.519
I'm moving my head around, no problem.
00:23:45.599 --> 00:23:47.920
And I'm like, oh my gosh, I have zero pain.
00:23:48.160 --> 00:23:51.279
I can still feel where the injury is, it just doesn't hurt.
00:23:51.759 --> 00:23:56.160
Um, so I took that one to the office and and hence bought a second one to have at the house.
00:23:56.559 --> 00:23:58.880
So I do that on the daily.
00:23:59.279 --> 00:24:08.799
Um and probably the other third practice is maintaining a positive loving relationship with my wife.
00:24:09.119 --> 00:24:15.039
We have been together and supporting each other through this entire journey since we were 20 years old.
00:24:15.200 --> 00:24:19.039
Uh, we've, you know, built our lives together.
00:24:19.359 --> 00:24:26.240
Um and it's funny, I was mentioning to you, she's been away for the last month helping her care for her father.
00:24:26.400 --> 00:24:32.160
And I'm realizing like how our spirits and energies are entwined.
00:24:32.640 --> 00:24:43.200
Um and I'm very blessed and grateful to have her in my life and have have the opportunities to constantly practice patience and acceptance too.
00:24:43.279 --> 00:25:03.359
You know, like that's part of a good marriage, is you know, it's not you're not always going to get your way, you know, of figuring out like how do we cohabitate in a way that is uh spirit lifting and God honoring, and uh that's definitely a part of my daily wellness, is being married to a wonderful, wonderful woman.
00:25:03.680 --> 00:25:11.039
We have so many guests on the show, and I always ask this questions, and we always hear very different perspectives and different practices.
00:25:11.200 --> 00:25:19.359
But the first time I I hear someone speak so lovely and wholeheartedly about this vow, and this doesn't mean other guests didn't love this vow.
00:25:19.599 --> 00:25:22.160
It's just so nice to hear that from you.
00:25:22.960 --> 00:25:29.440
And my husband and I we actually just went to a couple retreat a couple months ago, and they were talking about the quantum union.
00:25:29.839 --> 00:25:37.599
That how you know you are taken care of and you're here for a reason, and you there to support each other unconditionally.
00:25:37.759 --> 00:25:37.920
Yeah.
00:25:38.079 --> 00:25:44.640
And you know, it's not you against me or you and me against the world, it's us together, yeah, and then we can help others.
00:25:44.799 --> 00:25:47.599
So I love that you you mentioned that about your wife, it's so beautiful.
00:25:47.839 --> 00:25:51.920
It's we we were blessed, oh golly, almost a little more than five years ago.
00:25:52.160 --> 00:25:55.519
Julie was not a part of of my practice for 20 years.
00:25:56.240 --> 00:26:09.440
And uh, we had an opportunity for a uh business manager position uh five years ago, and she came in and oh my gosh, it's it you know, the first couple years we had a lot of speed bumps to go over and to calibrate.
00:26:09.839 --> 00:26:28.559
Yeah, and it was and it's been awesome because we now she appreciates so much more about what I do and how I see the world and where I have strengths and where I have weaknesses, and and it's the same for me, and it's been really cool, you know, not to just have our personal life together, but to help run this business and elevate it.
00:26:28.720 --> 00:26:38.400
Like, God's honest truth, since she came in, the functionality in our practice and the systems and the accountability has gone through the roof.
00:26:38.559 --> 00:26:40.400
She's amazing at that stuff.
00:26:40.720 --> 00:26:42.160
Oh she's incredible.
00:26:42.319 --> 00:26:44.079
Yeah, grateful for that too.
00:26:44.319 --> 00:26:48.640
That we're very blessed where we have the support, not just from the team, but family.
00:26:48.720 --> 00:26:49.839
And you absolutely right.
00:26:50.000 --> 00:26:54.400
No matter how much you share when they in the practice with us, it's very different.
00:26:54.640 --> 00:26:55.119
Very different.
00:26:55.599 --> 00:26:55.759
Right?
00:26:55.839 --> 00:26:59.359
Because every day, I don't know any dentist would have the same day happen twice.
00:26:59.599 --> 00:26:59.920
Right.
00:27:00.160 --> 00:27:07.359
Every single day is this a new thing, and I'm actually love that because I love the variety, and I'm like, I'm ready for challenge.
00:27:07.599 --> 00:27:10.079
And every new patient walk in is like a new story.
00:27:10.240 --> 00:27:10.400
Right.
00:27:10.640 --> 00:27:14.000
And we really want to crack the case, we really want to help them and get them journey.
00:27:14.240 --> 00:27:18.240
And I love the fact that you mentioned about the PEMF because I love that unit too.
00:27:18.400 --> 00:27:27.359
Um, but a lot of people don't realize that biological dentists, we testing out on ourselves before we said, okay, this is gonna help our patient.
00:27:27.599 --> 00:27:32.319
We may not know exactly how it helped each person, but we know it's gonna beneficial.
00:27:32.480 --> 00:27:34.799
And that's why we have so many toys.
00:27:35.279 --> 00:27:36.720
I know many technology.
00:27:37.039 --> 00:27:40.000
I I love that first talk today about photobiomodulation.
00:27:40.079 --> 00:27:49.759
I mean, I bought my first lasers in 2002, and we started doing, you know, cleaving the fibers and stepping back a couple feet, doing photobiomodulation back then.
00:27:49.920 --> 00:27:52.799
I mean, now we've got a Nova Thorbed in the wellness wing.
00:27:52.880 --> 00:27:55.839
It is like it's heaven over there, you know?
00:27:56.240 --> 00:27:58.160
And you can use it on your cell on your team too.
00:27:58.240 --> 00:28:02.079
So it's my strongest encouragement to my team members to do so for sure.
00:28:02.480 --> 00:28:07.519
That's definitely a wellness part, because a lot of people are asking us, like, as a wellness practice, like, what are you doing for your team?
00:28:07.599 --> 00:28:08.880
I said, wellness part.
00:28:09.119 --> 00:28:16.160
You know, all of the things that they have access to and all the knowledge that not only for them, they bring home and helping their family and their friends.
00:28:16.319 --> 00:28:17.440
So we love that.
00:28:17.759 --> 00:28:20.480
You have something coming that everyone needs to know about.
00:28:20.640 --> 00:28:22.880
I've been actually anticipated since last year.
00:28:23.039 --> 00:28:24.400
Because we had this conversation.
00:28:24.559 --> 00:28:25.039
Yes.
00:28:25.279 --> 00:28:27.440
And telling us about what's coming.
00:28:27.599 --> 00:28:27.839
Yes.
00:28:28.000 --> 00:28:29.119
It's a very big release.
00:28:29.599 --> 00:28:29.920
Thank you.
00:28:30.000 --> 00:28:33.200
Yes, I just recently released my first book.
00:28:33.279 --> 00:28:37.839
It's called Feel Whole Again, Your Humanistic Guide to Healthcare.
00:28:38.160 --> 00:28:49.680
And certainly the stories in the book are through my lens as a biological dentist, but really the theme of the story is a couple things.
00:28:49.839 --> 00:28:57.680
One is that there is so much value in the intuition and experience and thoughts and feelings of our patients.
00:28:58.240 --> 00:29:01.519
Have you ever thought about when you write a soap note?
00:29:02.000 --> 00:29:11.440
You know, that the there is supposed to be value in the subjective information, and there's so much that most practitioners don't really tap into.
00:29:11.519 --> 00:29:13.519
It's like patients said they had a tooth that hurt, you know.
00:29:13.759 --> 00:29:14.720
Yeah, which are like a robot.
00:29:15.039 --> 00:29:18.480
Yes, it's not how has this impacted your life?
00:29:18.880 --> 00:29:22.640
You know, how have you felt as a result of the dental experiences you've had in the past?
00:29:22.720 --> 00:29:23.839
And write those things down.
00:29:24.559 --> 00:29:38.960
Um because the the reason that's so important to look at, as I was mentioning earlier, if somebody is functioning from a state of shame or a state of fear in your setting, they can't heal.
00:29:39.519 --> 00:29:45.440
They are stuck in an energy stealing state, and you can expect that results will not be great.
00:29:46.319 --> 00:30:03.680
So as human beings, when people feel acknowledged, heard, valued, um, connected, these are all chapters that I write about looking at like feeling states and how they impact health.
00:30:03.920 --> 00:30:06.160
Um I encourage people to get a copy.
00:30:06.319 --> 00:30:08.079
I've had many dentists who read it.
00:30:08.240 --> 00:30:10.640
Yes, and they're like, how can I get a hundred copies?
00:30:10.720 --> 00:30:12.880
You know, and I'm happy to help all dentists do that.
00:30:12.960 --> 00:30:15.519
So we need to have more dental books in our library.
00:30:15.599 --> 00:30:27.839
We have library in the practice, and we have all the books about health and uh whole body and malbody connections, but we want books for more biological dentists, and we're encouraging them to start documenting and start writing.
00:30:28.160 --> 00:30:29.039
It starts here.
00:30:29.200 --> 00:30:35.200
For me, it starts in the heart, it starts in connecting with one human being to another.
00:30:35.359 --> 00:30:38.720
Um, you know, I looked at like what kind of a book was I wanting to write.
00:30:38.799 --> 00:30:47.119
I mean, you know, look at like uh Mark Briner's book, Whole Body Dentistry, Dominic Nishwitz's book, uh, Stephen Lynn's book about you know dental diet.
00:30:47.359 --> 00:30:48.559
Great, great books.
00:30:48.640 --> 00:31:10.240
Like we didn't need another one of those, but I wanted to tap into something that, in my experience and opinion, is greatly ignored in all healthcare, which is actually being present for people and hearing their story, much like a psychologist would, so that we can better be present and empathetic for those people that we serve.
00:31:10.480 --> 00:31:10.640
Yeah.
00:31:10.880 --> 00:31:19.440
And patients already trust us because the mouth is such an intimate space that they already trust us, and that's why we're always joking around us, so we're like, hey, we're like a therapist.
00:31:19.599 --> 00:31:19.680
Yeah.
00:31:19.920 --> 00:31:24.480
They're sharing a lot of things and they they want to get better and they're willing to do it.
00:31:24.559 --> 00:31:26.400
It's just nobody really took the time to listen.
00:31:26.559 --> 00:31:26.720
Yeah.
00:31:26.880 --> 00:31:27.440
So I love that.
00:31:27.759 --> 00:31:29.039
That's the flip side, is it takes time.
00:31:29.200 --> 00:31:29.680
It takes time.
00:31:29.759 --> 00:31:31.839
That's why you only see one patient a day.
00:31:32.160 --> 00:31:32.480
That's it.
00:31:32.720 --> 00:31:32.880
Yeah.
00:31:33.039 --> 00:31:35.200
So the next thing would be where can they get the book?
00:31:35.279 --> 00:31:36.400
Where can I get the book?
00:31:37.279 --> 00:31:37.920
Thank you for asking.
00:31:38.000 --> 00:31:39.839
So it's it's on Amazon.
00:31:40.319 --> 00:31:45.759
Um you can get uh Kindle version, you can get a paperback, you can get a hardback.
00:31:45.839 --> 00:31:50.640
And I just a month ago uh loaded up to um Audible.
00:31:51.279 --> 00:31:54.319
So they can hear my my voice.
00:31:56.079 --> 00:31:57.680
You know, narrating the book.
00:31:57.839 --> 00:32:00.000
Um a lot of people learn uh with that.
00:32:00.400 --> 00:32:01.519
Yes, the auditory for sure.
00:32:01.920 --> 00:32:07.599
Yes, I know a lot of people visual, but a lot of my team members are actually loading up things and listen to podcasts and they learn much better that way.
00:32:07.920 --> 00:32:08.000
Yeah.
00:32:08.160 --> 00:32:09.119
So they can get a copy.
00:32:09.519 --> 00:32:10.160
Awesome.
00:32:10.319 --> 00:32:10.880
All right.
00:32:11.119 --> 00:32:20.480
So if they want to reach out to you, Shay, I know that you're super famous, but share with everyone again your Instagram handle, your how do they get in touch with you?
00:32:20.880 --> 00:32:22.400
Yeah, so uh thank you.
00:32:22.559 --> 00:32:25.839
Um my Instagram is at blodgettdental care.
00:32:26.240 --> 00:32:29.039
Um, my website is blodgettdentalcare.com.
00:32:29.200 --> 00:32:35.359
I have a separate site uh that lists all of my coaching things that I do for practices.
00:32:35.599 --> 00:32:39.920
Um, that is drkellijblodgett.com.
00:32:40.240 --> 00:32:42.319
We're gonna put everything that's showing up for people to learn.
00:32:42.720 --> 00:32:43.519
Perfect, perfect.
00:32:44.079 --> 00:32:46.319
Uh I love going to practices.
00:32:46.480 --> 00:32:54.559
I've done quite a bit of going to practices for a third uh sorry, a Friday, Saturday, powwow, and helping teams.
00:32:54.720 --> 00:32:56.079
This is not a doctor thing.
00:32:56.240 --> 00:32:58.720
Yeah, it is a team thing to be clear.
00:32:58.960 --> 00:32:59.119
Yeah.
00:33:00.240 --> 00:33:11.200
Helping the doctor to clarify their vision, helping the team to understand that vision, and then allowing the team to support the dentist in the how are we going to accomplish that?
00:33:11.359 --> 00:33:19.759
Because a lot of, I was just before our talk here, I was talking with a dentist friend of mine, and she's like, you know, I want to do all these things, but I don't know how.
00:33:19.920 --> 00:33:21.920
And I'm like, You're that's why you have a team.
00:33:22.160 --> 00:33:22.400
That's right.
00:33:22.640 --> 00:33:27.279
They're gonna have ideas you don't have to think of, and they'll help support you and uplift you to it.
00:33:27.440 --> 00:33:28.799
It's like, oh, that's kind of nice.
00:33:28.960 --> 00:33:30.720
Like, I don't have to bear all the burden.
00:33:30.880 --> 00:33:41.279
Um and then learn better from another instructor or some mentor, because a lot of times dentists thinking, I'm gonna go learn, I'm gonna go back and explain everything to my team.
00:33:41.519 --> 00:33:41.920
Yes.
00:33:42.160 --> 00:33:48.480
And then some of us maybe not follow through, some of us maybe not experienced enough to show the team, and then we thinking like my team didn't get it.
00:33:48.640 --> 00:33:50.960
And then they bring you in and they're like, oh my God, what happened?
00:33:51.279 --> 00:33:53.359
Yes, the the Uncle John effect, right?
00:33:53.599 --> 00:33:58.240
Like dad said it, and they're like, whatever, dad, but then Uncle John tells you, and you're like, Oh, I'm in, you know?
00:33:58.559 --> 00:33:59.519
We see that all the time.
00:33:59.680 --> 00:34:05.599
So yeah, I think I think dentists have to remember that because they may come to the conclusion that my team didn't get it.
00:34:05.680 --> 00:34:10.559
I show them everything, I come back from the conference, I set up all this thing, and they didn't follow through.
00:34:10.639 --> 00:34:12.159
I'm like, they need to hear from someone else.
00:34:12.239 --> 00:34:17.119
So take them to the conference, so take him to the course, or having someone like you come into the office and train.
00:34:17.360 --> 00:34:19.599
Yeah, and I would love to share with the listeners, Dr.
00:34:19.679 --> 00:34:25.119
Judson Wall and I are doing a course together in November at his office.
00:34:25.280 --> 00:34:29.760
Uh, and it's it's about building your best biological practice.
00:34:30.079 --> 00:34:35.599
And, you know, he and I are polar opposites in terms of how we share information.
00:34:36.079 --> 00:34:41.199
We did our first one last year, and people said it was just so enriching because it was out too.
00:34:41.440 --> 00:34:42.960
Yeah, it was it was packed.
00:34:43.119 --> 00:34:43.280
Yeah.
00:34:43.679 --> 00:34:46.559
And uh we we hope it's the same case this year.
00:34:46.719 --> 00:35:04.239
I I love nothing more than seeing other peers, colleagues who want to have less stress in their life, have more joy in their life, you know, uh make more money, you know, helping more people in in more meaningful ways.
00:35:04.320 --> 00:35:07.360
And that's what we see coming out of these classes.
00:35:07.440 --> 00:35:08.880
So it's very exciting.
00:35:09.039 --> 00:35:11.039
Uh, I'm so blessed to get to do this.
00:35:11.360 --> 00:35:28.159
And I love that so many biological dentists here that like on the same page that we want to, you know, further the mission of serving the public, but also educating the upcoming or the people that know nothing about biological industry and only think what they hear on social is a full pictures.
00:35:28.480 --> 00:35:37.679
Like they don't research or they don't investigate, they don't take CE on that topic and they just assume that oh, that's just a terrible idea instead of investigate further.
00:35:37.840 --> 00:35:50.800
So I love that we're all gathering here at this conference and learn together, and then the patient would love that because like CE continued education is an indication of that provider growing, yeah, because information is changing so fast.
00:35:50.960 --> 00:35:54.079
So thank you again for you know giving us your precious time today.
00:35:54.320 --> 00:36:00.000
Oh, it's my boy without the time limit, we'd be like here until morning, we just keep sharing.
00:36:00.239 --> 00:36:03.599
So I love that, and so nice to meet your team in person.
00:36:03.840 --> 00:36:04.320
Thank you.
00:36:04.480 --> 00:36:13.760
And we would love to have you back and share more journey because I know you have so many practices you transform, and people would love to hear those stories and especially your book.
00:36:13.920 --> 00:36:15.039
We can't wait to have it.
00:36:15.119 --> 00:36:17.039
I can't wait to have it in my hand and get your autograph.
00:36:17.360 --> 00:36:18.159
Oh, absolutely.
00:36:18.320 --> 00:36:19.039
I'll be sending you.
00:36:19.440 --> 00:36:19.920
Yeah, yeah.
00:36:20.079 --> 00:36:20.800
Thank you so much.
00:36:20.960 --> 00:36:22.239
We were looking forward to have Dr.
00:36:22.320 --> 00:36:28.239
Kelly Bloggett come back to our show to give us an update on his transformations and his the practices he's helping.
00:36:28.400 --> 00:36:30.559
In the meantime, everything will be in the show note for you.
00:36:30.639 --> 00:36:37.280
So make sure you follow Blotchett General Care on Instagram and then reach out to him and his team if you have any questions.
00:36:37.519 --> 00:36:38.000
Thank you again.
00:36:38.159 --> 00:36:39.119
See you next time.
