00:00:01.217 --> 00:00:16.812
Hello, and welcome to the latest episode of Inside Out.
00:00:17.173 --> 00:00:23.039
My name is Ian Wilkes, and I'm here with my podcast partner, partner in crime, Mr.
00:00:23.239 --> 00:00:25.242
Jim Bennett, the logical Mr.
00:00:25.301 --> 00:00:25.762
Jim Bennett.
00:00:26.682 --> 00:00:27.303
Logical.
00:00:27.524 --> 00:00:27.943
Okay.
00:00:28.144 --> 00:00:29.326
I'm a Vulcan here.
00:00:30.850 --> 00:00:32.411
Yes,
00:00:32.712 --> 00:00:34.654
peace and prosper, Kim, peace and prosper.
00:00:34.673 --> 00:00:35.695
Live long and prosper.
00:00:36.496 --> 00:00:51.790
And Jim, I'm really excited about this week's podcast because I have two of our favorite people on the podcast, two people that myself and my family love dearly, and two people in the family that we've known for quite some time.
00:00:51.810 --> 00:00:57.335
We have Andy and Caroline Patterson, all the way from Dalkeith, Edinburgh, Scotland.
00:00:57.655 --> 00:00:59.357
Welcome, Andy, Caroline.
00:01:00.289 --> 00:01:01.350
Nicely welcomed.
00:01:01.972 --> 00:01:03.594
It's good to have you here.
00:01:03.615 --> 00:01:24.042
And so when we were talking about this podcast and preparing it, we talked about you coming on the podcast and sharing things that you feel comfortable with, including your experience in the church, you know, when you were coming into the church and what brought you into the church.
00:01:24.683 --> 00:01:29.549
And we talked about you sharing your thoughts and experiences on what life was like in the church.
00:01:30.402 --> 00:01:46.664
And just for our listeners, by the way, I've known Annie and Caroline for quite some time, since 1999, because my family, we moved from Yorkshire, Huddersfield State, to your ward, Dalkeith Ward, in 1999.
00:01:46.924 --> 00:01:50.528
I think Alan Campbell was the bishop at the time.
00:01:50.549 --> 00:01:51.370
Yep.
00:01:51.938 --> 00:01:52.218
I think.
00:01:53.159 --> 00:02:00.284
And, uh, and so we moved there and that's how we got to know Carl and Andy and just a wonderful couple that we just fell in love with.
00:02:00.766 --> 00:02:05.650
So we loved our time in Al-Qaeda and we served together actually, um, in different callings.
00:02:06.250 --> 00:02:07.411
Uh, and that's how I know.
00:02:07.471 --> 00:02:10.554
And my family knows Andy and Caroline over that length of time.
00:02:11.254 --> 00:02:22.745
And so, um, Andy, Caroline, if you, uh, are okay, if you could share with us, uh, your experience about, you know, how you came into the church, uh, even talk about how you met, uh, if you want to, you You came into the church.
00:02:23.645 --> 00:02:26.489
A little bit about your family would be great.
00:02:27.030 --> 00:02:29.431
And then you came to the church.
00:02:29.491 --> 00:02:30.432
You served in the church.
00:02:31.014 --> 00:02:32.276
You had experiences.
00:02:32.316 --> 00:02:33.637
You served different callings, et cetera.
00:02:34.138 --> 00:02:41.705
And then at some point, something happened at some point in time, and then you left the church, if you could talk about that.
00:02:42.247 --> 00:02:48.894
And then talk about what life is like since you left.
00:02:49.186 --> 00:02:52.030
Because if I understand, you've both left the church.
00:02:52.471 --> 00:02:52.891
Yeah, we have.
00:02:53.132 --> 00:03:00.582
And if you could share that experience and share with us what life is like, you know, post leaving the church.
00:03:00.603 --> 00:03:05.289
And then Jim and I, throughout the conversation, will interact with you and may ask you a couple of questions.
00:03:05.950 --> 00:03:09.295
But again, we want you to feel very comfortable with the conversation.
00:03:11.278 --> 00:03:18.248
She was a member of the church long before she met me, so I'll hand over to her first.
00:03:18.368 --> 00:03:23.657
So, I kind of had the whole Joseph Smith thing going on about which church to join.
00:03:24.137 --> 00:03:31.006
My mum had sent me to local Baptist Sunday School because it happened to be in our local primary school and she wanted a couple of hours peace and a fun.
00:03:31.727 --> 00:03:33.810
So I was sent there and I loved it.
00:03:34.450 --> 00:03:36.274
My sister hated that, didn't stick with it.
00:03:36.633 --> 00:03:37.354
I loved it.
00:03:37.514 --> 00:03:38.276
Went all the time.
00:03:38.316 --> 00:03:44.485
They eventually tried as a teenager wanted me to become a teacher for them but by that time I was like I'm not sure about this.
00:03:45.366 --> 00:03:54.391
So had that background and then I really wanted to know, like I say, the Joseph Smith type story of which church was true.
00:03:54.412 --> 00:04:04.288
So I actually had Jehovah's Witnesses teaching me at the same time as going to the Protestant church, Church of Scotland.
00:04:06.032 --> 00:04:08.597
And wasn't quite gelling with that.
00:04:08.676 --> 00:04:10.920
And so I was doing the whole praying, praying, praying.
00:04:11.020 --> 00:04:13.224
Like, I really want to know which church is yours.
00:04:13.425 --> 00:04:14.045
I need to know.
00:04:14.689 --> 00:04:16.913
I just need to know I want to join your church.
00:04:16.932 --> 00:04:18.093
I want to be in the right church.
00:04:18.113 --> 00:04:20.798
Whatever one it was, if it had been the Jehovah's Witnesses, I'd have done.
00:04:21.117 --> 00:04:22.139
That's where I'd have went.
00:04:22.480 --> 00:04:27.867
However, I worked in Edinburgh.
00:04:28.307 --> 00:04:36.437
There was a snow day and I couldn't go because the buses were only running to Edinburgh because we live on the outskirts.
00:04:37.059 --> 00:04:42.086
And I got the opportunity on that snow day to go for an interview in a local shop so I could walk to it.
00:04:42.658 --> 00:04:45.221
and got an interview for a job out of the blue.
00:04:45.261 --> 00:04:51.569
And I got the job there and then and discovered that a member of the church worked here.
00:04:51.608 --> 00:04:53.170
Pam Beveridge, do you remember Pam?
00:04:53.471 --> 00:04:54.653
I know Pam,
00:04:54.872 --> 00:04:55.533
yes.
00:04:56.454 --> 00:04:58.396
So I'm being taught by Jehovah's Witnesses.
00:04:58.437 --> 00:04:59.959
I've got a Church of Scotland background.
00:05:00.160 --> 00:05:01.620
And then all of a sudden I meet Pam.
00:05:01.682 --> 00:05:02.903
I start to ask her questions.
00:05:02.963 --> 00:05:07.569
I was one of these people that people love to meet because I was full of questions.
00:05:07.788 --> 00:05:09.310
Oh, can the missionaries come by?
00:05:09.331 --> 00:05:11.634
And I'm like, yeah, that would be amazing, lovely.
00:05:12.033 --> 00:05:14.937
And so I actually had the missionary lessons in their home.
00:05:14.958 --> 00:05:20.846
I was engaged at the time to another, not Andy, to another guy.
00:05:20.867 --> 00:05:23.009
We were both only 19.
00:05:23.990 --> 00:05:27.255
And I just kind of got right away, this is the one.
00:05:27.276 --> 00:05:27.857
This is the one.
00:05:27.896 --> 00:05:28.838
This is where I should be.
00:05:28.898 --> 00:05:29.939
This is God's church.
00:05:30.139 --> 00:05:34.004
And I'm going to put myself 100% into it.
00:05:34.646 --> 00:05:36.908
Alan, my ex-husband, came along for the ride.
00:05:36.928 --> 00:05:39.031
He did join, but he was never 100% in.
00:05:40.737 --> 00:05:43.384
And I just flourished and I loved it.
00:05:43.463 --> 00:05:52.964
I just loved the church, had the two boys, my two older children, and really went along great for a good few years.
00:05:52.985 --> 00:05:53.867
I was very happy.
00:05:54.649 --> 00:05:57.254
And then my marriage started to go wrong.
00:05:58.517 --> 00:06:00.201
And I...
00:06:01.634 --> 00:06:06.117
I found out a lot of things about my ex-husband and it just went all off the rails.
00:06:06.298 --> 00:06:09.641
And I had to go to the church and tell them what was going on and everything.
00:06:09.721 --> 00:06:21.031
And I actually discovered that one of the members had actually met, they were out for a meal, two of them, him and his wife, and Alan was in the same restaurant for a meal with another woman.
00:06:21.132 --> 00:06:21.952
He didn't tell me.
00:06:23.153 --> 00:06:24.095
I found out later on.
00:06:24.815 --> 00:06:31.062
Anyway, the crux of this was that the church had to interview me and I had to interview Alan.
00:06:31.521 --> 00:06:36.108
And I remember distinctly, you know, the path that used to go down to the building, Ian?
00:06:37.089 --> 00:06:39.012
Passing Alan on the path.
00:06:39.413 --> 00:06:39.954
I'd been in.
00:06:40.074 --> 00:06:41.036
I'd told my story.
00:06:41.096 --> 00:06:42.298
I'd gave them everything I had.
00:06:42.377 --> 00:06:44.922
I knew what I knew about at that point.
00:06:45.302 --> 00:06:49.689
And I just thought the spirit of discernment will be with these men.
00:06:49.728 --> 00:06:52.934
They will know that I'm telling the truth and Alan isn't.
00:06:54.475 --> 00:06:57.661
And I was shocked to my core because they believed everything Alan said.
00:06:58.081 --> 00:06:58.721
Everything he said.
00:06:59.884 --> 00:07:00.024
And...
00:07:01.473 --> 00:07:03.297
We ended up separating and divorcing.
00:07:03.476 --> 00:07:08.363
And I did go to church for a while with the boys after we separated.
00:07:08.624 --> 00:07:12.310
But the church is a family thing, you know.
00:07:12.389 --> 00:07:15.634
And I just felt I didn't fit in anymore.
00:07:15.694 --> 00:07:17.798
The members were being a bit funny with me.
00:07:18.658 --> 00:07:21.742
And so eventually I actually left for five years.
00:07:21.762 --> 00:07:23.084
I was gone for five years.
00:07:23.966 --> 00:07:25.889
Never not losing my testimony.
00:07:26.110 --> 00:07:26.971
Still had my testimony.
00:07:26.990 --> 00:07:29.053
The church just could not deal with it.
00:07:29.569 --> 00:07:32.853
with being there with a broken marriage, a broken temple marriage.
00:07:33.915 --> 00:07:34.937
I just couldn't deal with it.
00:07:35.156 --> 00:07:36.257
So I was off for five years.
00:07:36.517 --> 00:07:38.880
Within those five years, I met Andy.
00:07:40.262 --> 00:07:41.464
And obviously it got serious.
00:07:41.545 --> 00:07:44.048
And I said to him one day, look, I am a Mormon.
00:07:44.788 --> 00:07:45.649
Don't go at the minute.
00:07:46.149 --> 00:07:47.632
In fact, this is who I am.
00:07:47.672 --> 00:07:50.074
And one day I'm probably going back.
00:07:50.815 --> 00:07:52.497
And he was saying, it's fine.
00:07:53.119 --> 00:07:55.701
I didn't face him at all.
00:07:56.583 --> 00:07:59.005
And then we were literally married how long?
00:07:59.458 --> 00:08:00.238
weeks, months.
00:08:00.579 --> 00:08:06.329
Then we got married in the August and it was October.
00:08:06.350 --> 00:08:06.370
I
00:08:06.629 --> 00:08:56.461
think a bishop remember knocked on my door and said you know you're married again everything's you know fine and we want you back and that was all I needed was the invite to come back because what I didn't see is when I was gone for five years nobody bothered about me nobody came near me it was just me and my boys and I just got on with it I made a new life for myself I started karate lessons and you know I made myself a stronger woman through what had happened and then suddenly they found out I'm remarried and they're knocking on my door and I just thought I just took it as well this is the Lord wants me back you know this is the time to go back so we did we went back to church and um They gave me a calling right away as young women's president.
00:08:56.481 --> 00:08:59.445
And I was like, I've been gone for five years.
00:08:59.926 --> 00:09:00.826
This is too much.
00:09:01.006 --> 00:09:05.311
But I literally was invited back with a calling, young women's president.
00:09:06.011 --> 00:09:07.833
So I thought, right, okay, well, I'll do it.
00:09:08.154 --> 00:09:08.495
Did it.
00:09:09.015 --> 00:09:10.918
And then you would come down.
00:09:10.957 --> 00:09:14.442
It was when the three-hour thing was on and sacrament was last.
00:09:14.522 --> 00:09:18.086
So he would walk down from the house to the church for sacrament.
00:09:18.686 --> 00:09:19.967
And he'd sit in sacrament with me.
00:09:21.589 --> 00:09:21.750
And...
00:09:22.370 --> 00:09:24.591
I never put any pressure on him to join.
00:09:24.611 --> 00:09:25.893
I didn't think that was fair.
00:09:25.932 --> 00:09:28.456
It would be completely up to him if that's what he wanted to do.
00:09:28.475 --> 00:09:30.038
I just wasn't going to force it on him.
00:09:30.677 --> 00:09:34.061
And so I never really did any kind of proselyting.
00:09:34.081 --> 00:09:34.621
Have you done that?
00:09:34.822 --> 00:09:35.363
No, never.
00:09:35.863 --> 00:09:40.408
But when he was at church, obviously the missionary spoke to him, the bishop and everybody spoke to him and welcomed him.
00:09:40.447 --> 00:09:40.967
And he loved it.
00:09:41.008 --> 00:09:41.828
And he loved the singing.
00:09:41.869 --> 00:09:44.110
Like I said earlier, he loved to sing the hymns.
00:09:44.591 --> 00:09:46.974
And then one day he said to me, what did you say?
00:09:46.994 --> 00:09:47.073
What
00:09:48.195 --> 00:09:48.655
are you doing?
00:09:49.176 --> 00:09:50.197
On a such and such a day.
00:09:50.216 --> 00:09:52.057
And I said, Why?
00:09:52.178 --> 00:09:52.779
What's going on?
00:09:52.799 --> 00:09:53.761
I said, I'm getting baptized.
00:09:54.221 --> 00:09:56.245
And I was like, oh, no way.
00:09:57.086 --> 00:09:58.089
It just came out of the blue.
00:09:58.289 --> 00:09:58.610
It just...
00:09:59.071 --> 00:10:03.258
I think Paul, my son, who was about eight or nine?
00:10:04.279 --> 00:10:04.379
Eight.
00:10:04.721 --> 00:10:07.745
He gave a talk at one of the sacrament meetings about families.
00:10:07.966 --> 00:10:08.768
Families are forever.
00:10:08.908 --> 00:10:10.009
And it just touched him.
00:10:10.070 --> 00:10:11.533
And he said, yeah, I'm doing this.
00:10:12.134 --> 00:10:14.158
Well, he joined and...
00:10:14.785 --> 00:10:16.187
We got married in the temple.
00:10:16.268 --> 00:10:21.174
I had to go through the whole rigmarole of getting my first temple seal broken, which was no fun.
00:10:21.635 --> 00:10:22.898
But we got there, we did that.
00:10:23.639 --> 00:10:25.280
And then we got sealed in the temple.
00:10:26.283 --> 00:10:28.787
And then life was great.
00:10:28.886 --> 00:10:29.788
We were in the church.
00:10:29.807 --> 00:10:32.511
We had the four kids by then.
00:10:32.532 --> 00:10:33.933
No, we had just two.
00:10:34.554 --> 00:10:36.477
We only had Alan and Paul for a while.
00:10:36.557 --> 00:10:41.966
And then we went through a couple of miscarriages, which was another thing that...
00:10:42.562 --> 00:11:42.443
kind of upset me church wise so I've still got the thing about the spirit discernment wasn't it with the bishop when they spoke to my ex-husband and I got pregnant and I had a miscarriage which was sad but you know it happens however when I got pregnant again I went to my bishop I'm not going to say names Ian but I went to my bishop and I said I really need a blessing I am so worried that the same thing will happen again and eventually I tied him down and he reluctantly but he gave me a blessing and he told me in the blessing that i would hold this child in my arms that was his exact words do not worry and you will hold this child in your arms and about a few two weeks later i lost that baby as well so right away i'm thinking what happened there like what what's going on there why would i be told that and it took me weeks to get that bishop to speak to me he just couldn't even look at me on a sunday Eventually, I tied him down to her.
00:11:42.524 --> 00:11:43.666
I said, I need to speak to you.
00:11:43.725 --> 00:11:44.687
What happened here?
00:11:44.846 --> 00:11:46.909
You told me I'd hold this baby in my arms.
00:11:47.750 --> 00:11:52.697
And his reply, and I think already I'm starting to see how the church can never be wrong.
00:11:53.658 --> 00:11:58.644
But his reply was, you will hold this baby in your arms, but it'll not be in this life, it'll be in the next life.
00:11:58.745 --> 00:12:00.807
And I thought, that's just nonsense.
00:12:01.288 --> 00:12:02.671
That is not what you meant.
00:12:02.811 --> 00:12:17.331
And an actual priesthood holder said to me that he hates when the The elders or the priesthood would cop out with things that they promised them blessings and then it would turn it to suit them, if you like.
00:12:17.972 --> 00:12:19.375
So the church could never be wrong.
00:12:19.995 --> 00:12:21.298
The leaders could never be wrong.
00:12:21.899 --> 00:12:28.409
However, I put it to the back of my mind, put it on the shelf and we just got on with life, didn't we?
00:12:28.429 --> 00:12:32.657
And then we went on to have twins, one of which you met earlier.
00:12:33.437 --> 00:12:35.201
And life was great.
00:12:35.400 --> 00:12:35.761
We just...
00:12:36.225 --> 00:12:37.346
It was super.
00:12:37.547 --> 00:12:41.750
Alan, my oldest boy, he stopped coming to church when he was 16.
00:12:42.491 --> 00:12:45.154
And he kind of backed off from the family, didn't he?
00:12:45.355 --> 00:12:45.754
A little bit.
00:12:46.014 --> 00:12:47.616
And that has been quite a...
00:12:48.197 --> 00:12:49.418
We still talk about it yet.
00:12:49.499 --> 00:12:50.580
He's 47 now.
00:12:50.779 --> 00:12:54.644
He's 43 now.
00:12:54.663 --> 00:13:00.950
And he will still bring up how we had to stay away because he didn't feel good enough to come to visit, to come to the family.
00:13:00.970 --> 00:13:02.191
We were this Mormon family.
00:13:02.230 --> 00:13:05.374
His other brother, who's just two years younger, went.
00:13:06.081 --> 00:13:08.546
Ewan, no, me and Paul loved Ewan.
00:13:09.527 --> 00:13:10.749
He was still quite active.
00:13:11.591 --> 00:13:14.355
And he just felt like he didn't belong to our family.
00:13:14.394 --> 00:13:18.561
So that was a big rift that was caused by us being in the church.
00:13:19.142 --> 00:13:20.945
But it didn't bother us at the time.
00:13:20.985 --> 00:13:22.287
We just kind of got on with it.
00:13:22.528 --> 00:13:23.609
We saw him and we saw him.
00:13:24.350 --> 00:13:25.672
And everything was really quite good.
00:13:25.893 --> 00:13:28.255
Do you want to take over how you feel about it,
00:13:28.277 --> 00:13:28.336
Sam?
00:13:28.356 --> 00:13:28.856
I can do that.
00:13:29.658 --> 00:13:34.265
So my background was that I came from a very non-religious family.
00:13:35.618 --> 00:13:41.606
But my dad had been a member of the Brethren, which is quite a strict sect in Scotland.
00:13:41.966 --> 00:13:42.467
Very strict.
00:13:43.208 --> 00:13:44.510
And he'd really rebelled against that.
00:13:45.312 --> 00:13:48.376
But I'd kind of grown up around religious things.
00:13:48.476 --> 00:13:50.519
I always liked hymns and church singing.
00:13:51.761 --> 00:13:54.765
One of my girlfriend's university, her stepfather was a minister.
00:13:54.806 --> 00:13:58.010
So I used to go down there and church of England thing.
00:13:59.452 --> 00:14:01.034
That's when I met Caroline.
00:14:02.177 --> 00:14:04.681
And we really just gelled really quickly.
00:14:04.701 --> 00:14:05.381
Alan...
00:14:06.337 --> 00:14:07.419
Paul was 12, Paul was 8.
00:14:08.640 --> 00:14:10.224
And I was enjoying it.
00:14:10.364 --> 00:14:14.509
Like you said, she'd already told me, warned me that she was a Mormon and wanted to go back at some point.
00:14:14.549 --> 00:14:15.211
It didn't bother me.
00:14:15.912 --> 00:14:19.236
I didn't see myself ever joining a church, but it didn't bother me.
00:14:19.738 --> 00:14:24.224
I'd go down, and like Helen has already said, I enjoyed the social side of it.
00:14:24.283 --> 00:14:25.625
I enjoyed the singing.
00:14:26.486 --> 00:14:28.490
Some of the speakers were very good as well.
00:14:29.451 --> 00:14:33.116
And then Paul gave this talk about families, which kind of just rang a chord with me.
00:14:33.136 --> 00:14:33.758
So I started singing.
00:14:33.985 --> 00:14:39.292
asking the missionaries a few more questions to get the lessons officially without Caroline knowing about it.
00:14:40.472 --> 00:14:41.715
And it all seemed to make sense to me.
00:14:43.235 --> 00:14:48.442
The whole thing about how if God spoke to man in past tense, why wouldn't he do it now?
00:14:49.023 --> 00:14:50.083
Why wouldn't he have a living prophet?
00:14:50.104 --> 00:14:51.065
That really made sense to me.
00:14:51.105 --> 00:14:53.567
I thought, okay, this all makes sense.
00:14:54.589 --> 00:14:57.511
And I did get those feelings, you know, the feelings he told you you're going to get in your heart.
00:14:57.972 --> 00:15:00.696
I had some really nice feelings at that time.
00:15:01.356 --> 00:15:02.398
So I got baptised.
00:15:02.977 --> 00:15:05.020
And next week, I was called as ward clerk.
00:15:05.982 --> 00:15:09.749
But I think throughout my time in church, I was never without at least one calling.
00:15:10.830 --> 00:15:12.293
I was ward clerk.
00:15:12.312 --> 00:15:13.234
I was on the bishopric.
00:15:14.095 --> 00:15:15.717
I was on young men's presidency.
00:15:15.817 --> 00:15:18.802
I was on stake, young men's presidency.
00:15:20.465 --> 00:15:22.849
But I had a lot of callings, had a lot of good experiences.
00:15:23.570 --> 00:15:25.153
And some not so good.
00:15:25.173 --> 00:15:30.581
I guess that's where you realize that people are people, men are men, and are going to make mistakes.
00:15:30.780 --> 00:15:36.259
And I especially kind of found that at stake level for stake disciplinary hearings.
00:15:37.221 --> 00:15:41.445
A few things went on there that really were quite an eye-opener for me at the time.
00:15:42.527 --> 00:15:46.551
I kind of passed it off as, okay, yeah, men are going to make mistakes.
00:15:46.630 --> 00:15:50.716
God can't guide absolutely everything, but we still have this church structure.
00:15:51.236 --> 00:15:53.158
We still have the priesthood authority restored.
00:15:53.178 --> 00:15:54.440
We still have a living prophet.
00:15:55.100 --> 00:15:57.464
And that was all really made sense to me.
00:15:57.624 --> 00:15:59.105
I mostly enjoyed my time in church.
00:16:01.090 --> 00:16:02.951
I've
00:16:03.211 --> 00:16:05.475
been trying to think about what if there was a
00:16:06.456 --> 00:16:06.556
one
00:16:07.297 --> 00:16:27.311
point one moment I actually can't think of a one moment thing I just started to think about there was a lot of things bothering me tithing was a big thing that bothered me even before I knew I mean I've only recently found out how much the church has so it was nothing to do with that kind of it's just That was one thing.
00:16:27.370 --> 00:16:28.993
Polygamy was another thing that bothered me.
00:16:29.133 --> 00:16:31.755
Blacks in the priesthood really bothered me.
00:16:32.535 --> 00:16:34.317
And I just started to have these questions.
00:16:34.457 --> 00:16:41.566
And then a friend, that I think you know as well, Ian, she told us about this site that we could join.
00:16:42.226 --> 00:16:46.772
It's now called the Waters of Mormon, but it wasn't at that point.
00:16:46.871 --> 00:16:48.232
And so I joined.
00:16:48.274 --> 00:16:48.514
Did you
00:16:48.614 --> 00:16:49.114
join?
00:16:49.153 --> 00:16:49.634
No, not at the time.
00:16:49.975 --> 00:16:50.615
I joined it.
00:16:51.517 --> 00:16:54.320
And the whole thing for this...
00:16:54.519 --> 00:16:55.100
Right.
00:16:55.561 --> 00:16:55.902
Sorry?
00:16:56.418 --> 00:16:57.960
That's a Facebook group, right?
00:16:58.301 --> 00:16:58.600
Yes.
00:16:58.740 --> 00:17:04.490
And their whole crux is to try and help people who want to stay in, but they have a lot of questions.
00:17:05.151 --> 00:17:09.156
And technically, I shouldn't be in it anymore because I don't want to stay in.
00:17:09.196 --> 00:17:12.842
But I do still like hearing about things and what's going on in the church.
00:17:13.143 --> 00:17:16.647
But actually, it was worse for me.
00:17:17.409 --> 00:17:20.753
Actually, being on that group made me see a lot of things.
00:17:20.993 --> 00:17:26.221
I actually honestly know more about the church now than I did when I was an active member.
00:17:27.074 --> 00:17:27.674
through this group.
00:17:28.435 --> 00:17:35.987
And some of the things I found out, instead of making me feel better, just pushed me even further away.
00:17:36.007 --> 00:17:39.432
And of course, then the CES letter comes up and you think, well, what's that?
00:17:40.173 --> 00:17:41.335
So I have a read at that.
00:17:41.375 --> 00:17:42.155
Not the whole thing.
00:17:42.336 --> 00:17:42.856
It's too long.
00:17:42.896 --> 00:17:47.002
But, you know, the kind of basic points that most people kind of know about it.
00:17:47.403 --> 00:17:49.467
And that just gave me more questions.
00:17:49.747 --> 00:17:50.929
More questions and more questions.
00:17:51.470 --> 00:17:57.906
I went to our state president and I asked him, I asked for a meeting and I asked him some of these questions.
00:17:57.967 --> 00:18:00.090
And I remember the one on tithing.
00:18:01.073 --> 00:18:05.441
And I did say to him, I knew the church had a lot of money, didn't you know how much?
00:18:05.902 --> 00:18:09.288
I says, you know, why is the church asking for tithing?
00:18:09.367 --> 00:18:09.709
Who was it?
00:18:09.749 --> 00:18:12.694
Was it Joseph S.
00:18:12.714 --> 00:18:17.242
Smith that had said that there would come a time when the church would no longer require a tithe?
00:18:17.262 --> 00:18:18.665
I think it was him.
00:18:19.650 --> 00:18:21.071
publish my names, but I'm thinking of his son.
00:18:21.432 --> 00:18:22.134
Anyway, a
00:18:22.233 --> 00:18:22.574
prophet.
00:18:22.615 --> 00:18:23.556
That's Dr.
00:18:23.635 --> 00:18:24.096
F Smith.
00:18:24.237 --> 00:18:24.958
That's exactly right.
00:18:25.259 --> 00:18:25.679
It is him.
00:18:26.299 --> 00:18:27.923
And I said this to him,
00:18:29.104 --> 00:18:29.244
and I
00:18:29.565 --> 00:18:35.914
said, because we were not well off, and I gave the church a lot of money and struggled because of it.
00:18:36.395 --> 00:18:39.500
And I said, I need to know, why is the church needing so much money?
00:18:39.621 --> 00:18:40.882
Why is this prophesied?
00:18:41.182 --> 00:18:44.228
And this was another thing that bothered us, which we'll go into later.
00:18:44.888 --> 00:18:47.414
Why is this not Why has it never happened?
00:18:47.596 --> 00:18:48.737
Why do you still need so much money?
00:18:48.836 --> 00:18:59.449
And I'll never forget his response was, it's been prophesied that the American government will collapse one day and the church will need that money to step in.
00:19:00.289 --> 00:19:04.755
That's what he told me.
00:19:05.234 --> 00:19:06.016
That was his word.
00:19:06.336 --> 00:19:07.156
Is that something new?
00:19:07.778 --> 00:19:11.041
I actually did find something that Brigham Young had said.
00:19:11.554 --> 00:19:20.664
that his words were that they would come to him with an American constitution, as the word he used, would fail and that they would have to step, the elders of the church would have to step up.
00:19:22.047 --> 00:19:26.251
So that's the only thing I could find that would maybe be where the state president got this one.
00:19:26.271 --> 00:19:27.653
But that just sickened me.
00:19:27.713 --> 00:19:29.155
I'm like, whoa, wait a minute.
00:19:29.215 --> 00:19:36.163
You're asking me, who doesn't have a lot at that time, to pay money so that the American government can be built?
00:19:36.223 --> 00:19:40.809
For every question I asked, things just...
00:19:41.250 --> 00:19:44.032
There was more and more coming to me that I was asking more about.
00:19:44.252 --> 00:19:46.516
It just confused matters even more.
00:19:46.955 --> 00:19:50.039
The answers were not good from my point of view.
00:19:50.180 --> 00:20:02.294
One of the other things that I just touched on a minute ago is about, and this is one of the things that you really struggled with, is how past prophets prophesize and are thrown aside by new prophets.
00:20:03.075 --> 00:20:04.675
That makes no sense to me.
00:20:05.037 --> 00:20:08.160
If the Lord willed it then, why has it changed now?
00:20:08.421 --> 00:20:15.311
But for me, I could still reason that away because things do change and maybe the Lord was shaping a path.
00:20:16.932 --> 00:20:21.298
I still didn't find anything completely black and white that would chase me away from the church.
00:20:22.058 --> 00:20:24.441
There's lots of small niggling things like Carolyn had explained.
00:20:24.500 --> 00:20:26.042
We struggled financially.
00:20:26.103 --> 00:20:32.829
Some of the people in the Lord were not the best example of church people, shall we say.
00:20:32.869 --> 00:20:36.053
And you struggle with the fact that they're called of God.
00:20:36.073 --> 00:20:38.047
And then you think, well, They have something to learn.
00:20:38.327 --> 00:20:39.650
There's always a way of justifying it.
00:20:39.690 --> 00:20:42.153
They have something to learn or I have something to learn.
00:20:42.513 --> 00:20:45.679
Maybe I need to learn patience or humility or how to work with somebody.
00:20:45.798 --> 00:20:49.183
But there's lots of little things just kind of niggling away.
00:20:49.203 --> 00:20:54.711
And then we went to a friend's house and we met Jonathan.
00:20:54.751 --> 00:21:03.025
Yeah, so my daughter-in-law's mum, who was in an Edinburgh ward, she was always one for having the missionaries for dinner.
00:21:03.065 --> 00:22:05.736
And this ex-missionary had come over to Scotland like years after his mission and just to visit her because Liz was so good at you know feeding the missionaries and things so she kept in touch with quite a lot of them and he came to visit and we were invited to go and meet them and it turned out that he had totally stepped away from the church at like really anti church and he started to tell us things that were like oh my goodness like what it just like loads of different things I'm trying I was trying to remember some of the things that we discussed with him and he blew my mind he just blew my mind and that is when I thought oh my goodness this is not what I thought it was this is not the church that I joined this what have I been believing in for all these years and you know giving all this time and money and energy to it freaked me out a wee bit actually and Blair He was planning a mission.
00:22:05.756 --> 00:22:08.220
He would have been about 17 at the time.
00:22:08.641 --> 00:22:09.461
Planning a mission.
00:22:09.643 --> 00:22:11.025
Very into the church.
00:22:11.125 --> 00:22:12.487
Probably the four-year kid.
00:22:13.188 --> 00:22:14.471
He was the most into it.
00:22:15.291 --> 00:22:18.156
He actually kept going with Andy after I stopped going.
00:22:18.897 --> 00:22:22.984
And he got really upset when he was listening to this guy.
00:22:23.045 --> 00:22:24.446
When we were telling him what he had told us.
00:22:24.507 --> 00:22:28.133
And he sat out here on our steps in our hallway, on our staircase.
00:22:28.594 --> 00:22:28.993
Sobbing.
00:22:29.154 --> 00:22:30.036
Crying his heart out.
00:22:30.576 --> 00:22:30.958
Because...
00:22:31.586 --> 00:22:33.407
It's just not, he's telling lies.
00:22:33.468 --> 00:22:34.249
That's not the church.
00:22:34.288 --> 00:22:39.675
You know, he just got so upset because his church that he loved so much, he was prepared to go and serve for two years.
00:22:40.317 --> 00:22:42.058
We were telling him things he didn't want to hear.
00:22:42.920 --> 00:22:45.042
And he took quite a while to come around, didn't he?
00:22:45.163 --> 00:22:45.462
He did, yeah.
00:22:45.482 --> 00:22:45.884
He just...
00:22:46.924 --> 00:22:53.613
And so if Callan had left the church because of these questions, I was still going with Blair, still struggling along.
00:22:54.713 --> 00:23:05.299
What really kind of finished me off was when I can't remember if it was one of the bishops or a state president or one of the conference talks that said that a prophet's not always a prophet.
00:23:05.680 --> 00:23:13.049
You have to decide for yourself when he's prophesying on behalf of the Lord or when he's just speaking as a man.
00:23:14.051 --> 00:23:19.199
And for me, the whole foundation of the church wasn't Joseph Smith as such, but the fact that it was a living prophet.
00:23:19.900 --> 00:23:20.601
Because that made sense.
00:23:20.641 --> 00:23:27.230
I mean, if it wasn't a living prophet guiding the church in modern times, then it was just another church led by men.
00:23:27.970 --> 00:23:31.454
and all these other things that kind of had niggled in the background.
00:23:32.757 --> 00:23:40.086
From that point on, I didn't want to be bothered overcoming those if the foundation of the church, in my eyes anyway, wasn't there anymore.
00:23:40.567 --> 00:23:51.163
I only really went for the church because the structure of the church, having a prophet guiding it and speaking to God and giving us this continuing revelation, that's what really sold it for me.
00:23:52.084 --> 00:23:54.823
And when somebody told me, well, It isn't, it isn't.
00:23:54.923 --> 00:23:56.465
You can pick and choose.
00:23:56.486 --> 00:23:59.569
You have to decide for yourself, but don't question the prophet.
00:24:00.632 --> 00:24:01.773
You
00:24:01.814 --> 00:24:03.557
have to question him, but don't question him.
00:24:03.757 --> 00:24:05.700
Follow the prophet, but don't always follow the prophet.
00:24:05.740 --> 00:24:06.580
And I just thought, well...
00:24:06.661 --> 00:24:07.362
It was confusing.
00:24:07.762 --> 00:24:07.923
Yeah.
00:24:08.423 --> 00:24:11.087
And for me, that was the final straw when we left, which was...
00:24:13.171 --> 00:24:13.451
Five
00:24:13.551 --> 00:24:14.272
or six years?
00:24:14.834 --> 00:24:18.298
Officially, probably about six years plus we'd not been going to church.
00:24:18.619 --> 00:24:25.582
And I remember Blair coming to us one day, maybe about a year later, He couldn't go to church because we physically weren't taking him.
00:24:25.622 --> 00:24:27.605
He lived too far away and he wasn't driving at the time.
00:24:28.887 --> 00:24:36.019
And he came to us one day and he played rugby for his local rugby team.
00:24:36.901 --> 00:24:43.330
And anything about rugby culture, there's a lot of meeting in the pub and whatever afterwards.
00:24:43.412 --> 00:25:23.027
And actually, one of the men who ran the club, actually we bought him a crate of non-alcoholic beer that he could join in with the celebrations and still be keeping the word of wisdom because he did take a lot of stick to the other rugby players because his beliefs in the church and what have you and he stuck to it for a while and then one day he came to us and says I just want to be an ordinary teenager I just want to be able to go out with my friends and I said well do it son just do it be who you are I think by that time, he had started to listen to our argument about the things that we'd been talking, discussing about, and got into a better place of actually listening to us.
00:25:25.049 --> 00:25:40.051
Originally, when he'd heard these things, he'd just, no, not having that, the church is true, and he was gradually coming round to things, and that's when he said, I just want to be a normal person, a normal teenager, and I said, well, go and be who you
00:25:41.114 --> 00:25:41.334
are.
00:25:41.354 --> 00:25:45.963
That brings us to the end of the active part of our church story anyway.
00:25:50.731 --> 00:25:54.057
You're both still on the records of the church.
00:25:54.096 --> 00:25:55.479
Yes.
00:25:57.521 --> 00:26:01.448
I'm not sure if I find it necessary.
00:26:01.867 --> 00:26:02.368
I don't know.
00:26:02.409 --> 00:26:06.434
In Scotland, it's easy to walk away.
00:26:06.454 --> 00:26:09.900
We're not in a Mormon community.
00:26:10.101 --> 00:26:16.340
I hear stories on that Facebook site where People do not believe anymore.
00:26:16.361 --> 00:26:23.413
100% do not believe, but still go because they have to keep up appearances because their jobs are wrapped up in it, their marriages are wrapped up in it.
00:26:23.993 --> 00:26:31.566
You know, it seems like a completely different kind of life, but actually frightens me how people have to stick with it.
00:26:32.528 --> 00:26:33.609
Here, that's not the case.
00:26:34.171 --> 00:26:35.172
Nothing really changes.
00:26:35.452 --> 00:26:40.761
And we were told, I don't know if it's true or not, we were told that to get our names taken off the membership records, you had to...
00:26:41.377 --> 00:26:42.839
applied to the first presidency.
00:26:43.060 --> 00:26:45.443
You had to go and speak to your bishop or whoever it was.
00:26:45.564 --> 00:26:48.990
And as Carolyn says, it didn't really seem necessary.
00:26:49.049 --> 00:26:56.761
If the church wants us to include us in their membership numbers, to look good or whatever, it doesn't really affect us as such, but we are still on the records.
00:26:57.962 --> 00:27:12.801
You know, when you were, I just want to say before I ask this question for our listeners, that I've had the privilege of serving with you both in different callings, different capacities, as Debbie has, my family.
00:27:12.842 --> 00:27:18.511
And Jamie, it's hard to find two more dedicated, devoted individuals, frankly.
00:27:19.133 --> 00:27:30.573
Caroline and Andy, from my experience, were absolutely committed, devoted, spiritually, emotionally, physically, with all the time.
00:27:30.593 --> 00:27:30.613
I
00:27:31.994 --> 00:27:34.479
think, Ian, that that is part of the problem for me.
00:27:35.160 --> 00:27:45.791
Because I am a black and white person I'm 100% in or I'm 100% out and I cannot sit on the fence with one foot in one foot out that's not being true to anything or anybody
00:27:46.452 --> 00:27:59.019
and you describe me that's exactly how I am right whereas Debbie is very different to me right I'm in completely and when I mean I am in right like you guys were.
00:27:59.339 --> 00:28:01.461
And when I'm out, I'm done, right?
00:28:02.782 --> 00:28:06.627
And so, Jim, Callan and Andy were just incredibly faithful and devoted.
00:28:07.228 --> 00:28:10.211
Callan, I think you were Lucy's Nike president at one point.
00:28:11.752 --> 00:28:11.772
I
00:28:12.173 --> 00:28:13.615
don't think I've ever been president.
00:28:13.796 --> 00:28:15.518
I certainly was in the...
00:28:15.758 --> 00:28:18.361
But my favourite, Pauline, my favourite...
00:28:18.941 --> 00:28:19.741
Sandy's a good teacher.
00:28:19.882 --> 00:28:20.762
Sandy's a good teacher.
00:28:21.203 --> 00:28:22.025
Yeah, Jim...
00:28:23.425 --> 00:28:27.219
Caroline was the most amazing teacher in the ward.
00:28:27.840 --> 00:28:29.306
You were the finest teacher.
00:28:29.425 --> 00:28:30.990
And then you and I served together, Andy.
00:28:31.291 --> 00:28:36.670
And, you know, and so that was just wonderful to see.
00:28:36.769 --> 00:28:37.550
to work with you.
00:28:37.590 --> 00:28:39.614
And we got a lot.
00:28:39.653 --> 00:28:41.356
I mean, it was very rewarding spiritually.
00:28:41.798 --> 00:28:45.103
You mentioned earlier, Andy, that you got a new as well, Caroline.
00:28:45.182 --> 00:28:47.026
I mean, you were in, you got a lot from it.
00:28:47.226 --> 00:28:49.489
It was fulfilling spiritually.
00:28:49.568 --> 00:28:55.018
You come back and you feel filled spiritually, notwithstanding some of the challenges.
00:28:55.618 --> 00:29:04.556
You know, when you were so in, when you were discovering all these issues and the problems and asking questions, I've got two questions.
00:29:04.696 --> 00:29:05.657
What was the reaction?
00:29:05.678 --> 00:29:08.061
Did you try talking to other members in the ward?
00:29:08.383 --> 00:29:09.284
And what was their reaction?
00:29:09.825 --> 00:29:15.114
And then what has been the reaction of the member friends in the ward since
00:29:15.734 --> 00:29:16.517
you've left?
00:29:16.636 --> 00:29:21.746
She spoke to people because she was closer to, I guess, well, in my experience, women are closer
00:29:21.766 --> 00:29:22.527
to each
00:29:22.547 --> 00:29:23.888
other than men are anyway.
00:29:24.450 --> 00:29:30.880
And she had lots of women's nights out with current members and also people that were no longer members.
00:29:31.240 --> 00:29:34.405
She would go out on nights out or weekends away with women like that.
00:29:34.445 --> 00:29:36.250
So she probably had discussions much more than I did.
00:29:36.830 --> 00:29:37.392
Right.
00:29:37.412 --> 00:29:37.692
Yeah.
00:29:39.876 --> 00:29:45.006
So I didn't discuss it with a lot of people, but there was a couple of people I did discuss it.
00:29:45.046 --> 00:29:46.808
I don't want to say names.
00:29:47.349 --> 00:29:52.219
But my best friend in the church, we still have close relationships with two families.
00:29:53.582 --> 00:29:53.662
Yeah.
00:29:54.114 --> 00:29:55.115
And we get on really well.
00:29:55.134 --> 00:29:56.896
We still go and see each other and things.
00:29:56.936 --> 00:29:59.298
And we kind of come to the thing off.
00:29:59.338 --> 00:30:00.800
We just don't discuss the church.
00:30:01.681 --> 00:30:02.742
But I did originally.
00:30:02.923 --> 00:30:04.304
And I can remember sitting.
00:30:04.544 --> 00:30:06.105
She brought me home from something one night.
00:30:06.787 --> 00:30:08.428
And we were sitting out in my driveway.
00:30:09.169 --> 00:30:12.932
And in the car for probably over an hour.
00:30:13.133 --> 00:30:14.794
Just talking about different things.
00:30:15.454 --> 00:30:17.317
And I was telling her the things I'd found out.
00:30:17.457 --> 00:30:18.157
And the problems.
00:30:18.337 --> 00:30:20.380
And why I wasn't coming back to church.
00:30:20.440 --> 00:30:22.461
Because I'm neither in or out.
00:30:22.594 --> 00:30:54.558
and I was telling her these things and her reply was interesting she said to me I know there's problems in the church I don't want to know them and I thought okay because I think for a lot of people they've given so much to admit that they were wrong that somehow they've got this whole thing wrong it's too much for them so they just want to keep going and ignorance And she did not want me to tell her, like, I know, I know things aren't right.
00:30:54.638 --> 00:30:55.800
I know there's a lot of problems.
00:30:55.901 --> 00:30:57.282
I just don't want to know them.
00:30:58.003 --> 00:31:01.469
So that's really it.
00:31:01.509 --> 00:31:03.411
That's probably the person I spoke most to.
00:31:03.431 --> 00:31:04.393
And she's still active.
00:31:05.653 --> 00:31:09.298
I'm not sure she's particularly happy, but she's still active, her family.
00:31:10.240 --> 00:31:10.661
And
00:31:11.162 --> 00:31:12.923
maybe it's because we're not active in the church.
00:31:13.905 --> 00:31:18.219
And other than these two families, the church is really just, left us alone.
00:31:19.200 --> 00:31:19.500
Nobody's
00:31:19.780 --> 00:31:20.602
tried to bring us back.
00:31:20.622 --> 00:31:23.685
Nobody has ever knocked on the door to try
00:31:23.705 --> 00:31:24.246
and do that.
00:31:24.266 --> 00:31:32.596
We don't know of anybody personally that's still active in the church that doesn't have some doubts, if not a lot of doubts, but is still going to church.
00:31:33.979 --> 00:31:40.066
I don't think we could name somebody that's 100% in the church and is really happy about it and doesn't have any questions.
00:31:40.866 --> 00:31:44.551
Because I'm a red, black and white person, I do get kind of annoyed.
00:31:44.731 --> 00:31:50.095
We know somebody who You know, I would say, oh, don't worry about that.
00:31:50.134 --> 00:31:50.955
There are, what's it called?
00:31:51.236 --> 00:31:54.160
A cafeteria Mormon, I think they give it that name.
00:31:54.300 --> 00:31:55.001
The pick and choose.
00:31:55.623 --> 00:31:56.884
I could never do that.
00:31:57.525 --> 00:31:58.026
I could never.
00:31:58.066 --> 00:32:01.109
The church taught me it's either all true.
00:32:01.310 --> 00:32:02.772
This was the words of an actual prophet.
00:32:02.813 --> 00:32:04.194
I'm not going to try and remember which one.
00:32:05.016 --> 00:32:05.477
Gordon B.
00:32:05.497 --> 00:32:05.836
Hinckley.
00:32:06.198 --> 00:32:06.478
Gordon B.
00:32:06.518 --> 00:32:07.298
Hinckley, thank you.
00:32:07.338 --> 00:32:10.443
He said, it's either all true or it's all not.
00:32:10.844 --> 00:32:11.585
It's all lies.
00:32:13.428 --> 00:32:14.750
That's what the church taught.
00:32:15.746 --> 00:32:16.125
They didn't.
00:32:16.247 --> 00:32:18.628
And to me, there's no room for nuance.
00:32:19.349 --> 00:32:20.991
You know, either it's right or it's wrong.
00:32:21.492 --> 00:32:34.127
And the minute I discovered things about Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, the things that went on, the major mascot, I could go on and on and on about all the things I've discovered that I never knew before.
00:32:35.108 --> 00:32:39.394
I think probably the worst one for me was finding out how many different versions of the First Vision there was.
00:32:40.673 --> 00:32:43.737
And how many years it was before Joseph actually told this story.
00:32:44.017 --> 00:32:46.740
That's not what the missionaries teach us when they knock on the doors.
00:32:47.441 --> 00:32:50.544
And I've been deceived for years.
00:32:51.064 --> 00:32:52.986
I cannot be a part of this anymore.
00:32:53.446 --> 00:32:55.548
But like you say, Ian, there is a lot of good.
00:32:55.909 --> 00:32:57.309
We loved our time in the church.
00:32:58.250 --> 00:33:01.535
Until those doubts came, we were more than happy doing what we were doing.
00:33:02.194 --> 00:33:14.828
The kids, like Alan, who's the oldest one who walked away first, will still say to us to this day, that the things he was taught as a child, the morals and the standards, still stick with him.
00:33:15.048 --> 00:33:16.631
And he's got no problem with that.
00:33:18.554 --> 00:33:20.016
So yeah, the church does a lot of good.
00:33:20.155 --> 00:33:30.749
And our kids had a lot, the twins in particular, had a lovely life with all their friends in the church, which I think you could count one hand amount of them that are still active amongst their friends.
00:33:31.230 --> 00:33:37.597
Because we had a state resident who at the time our kids were young men, young women, was brilliant with the youth.
00:33:38.210 --> 00:33:39.972
He organised so many things for them.
00:33:40.393 --> 00:33:44.799
We used to have them because we're a big stake, unlike the ones in America.
00:33:44.819 --> 00:33:50.087
I don't know what Canada's like, but you know, Ian, we're a big stake geographically.
00:33:50.689 --> 00:33:52.671
So we would have all the kids come and stay at our house.
00:33:52.711 --> 00:33:58.339
I mean, I was climbing over sleeping bags with, you know, teenagers everywhere in our house.
00:33:58.660 --> 00:34:04.970
We wanted the kids to have a good friendship experience because we thought that's what will keep them in the church.
00:34:05.506 --> 00:34:08.369
As if they have good friends, which is what Alan and Paul never had.
00:34:09.110 --> 00:34:11.432
Because back in their day, it was dismal.
00:34:12.014 --> 00:34:14.277
The youth programme was terrible.
00:34:14.898 --> 00:34:16.920
Taylor and Blair had a completely different experience.
00:34:17.000 --> 00:34:19.523
It was a really good youth experience for them.
00:34:21.867 --> 00:34:25.992
So, yeah, we did our best to try and keep everybody active and running along.
00:34:26.012 --> 00:34:29.076
But as soon as these doubts came, like I say, I'm in or I'm out.
00:34:29.777 --> 00:34:30.717
And I could not...
00:34:32.065 --> 00:34:34.068
I could not justify anybody.
00:34:34.088 --> 00:34:35.389
You know, what's it they call it?
00:34:36.570 --> 00:34:37.030
What's the word?
00:34:37.632 --> 00:34:38.351
Can they try to...
00:34:39.273 --> 00:34:39.592
You answer.
00:34:39.954 --> 00:34:41.255
No, I was thinking another word.
00:34:41.275 --> 00:34:41.795
It will come to me.
00:34:42.195 --> 00:34:44.057
You know, when you're trying to balance things and...
00:34:46.019 --> 00:34:46.619
Reconcile.
00:34:47.141 --> 00:34:53.987
Yeah, just trying to, you know, trying to think, well, that might have happened, but let's just ignore it because I love the church.
00:34:54.108 --> 00:34:55.168
And I dug over the church.
00:34:55.608 --> 00:34:55.849
I did.
00:34:55.869 --> 00:34:56.510
I really did.
00:34:57.731 --> 00:34:58.351
But I couldn't.
00:34:58.492 --> 00:34:59.172
I just couldn't.
00:34:59.213 --> 00:34:59.853
I thought, no...
00:35:00.385 --> 00:35:07.088
off it told me it's either all right or it's all wrong and I'm telling you the things I found out it's wrong
00:35:07.108 --> 00:35:11.014
I think your second question was what's life like Yeah, if
00:35:11.355 --> 00:35:13.577
you can ask that question.
00:35:13.637 --> 00:35:14.938
And then I want to bring Jim in.
00:35:14.978 --> 00:35:18.762
I'd like to hear Jim's thoughts on your story.
00:35:18.782 --> 00:35:22.865
Because, Jim, you've heard similar stories for quite some, you know, in your life.
00:35:23.226 --> 00:35:26.369
So, yeah, what's life like now post, you know, church?
00:35:26.530 --> 00:35:32.054
And then, Jim, it'd be good to get your thoughts on what you think about Caroline and his story.
00:35:32.394 --> 00:35:33.777
Mine first and then Caroline's.
00:35:33.856 --> 00:35:37.239
So, for me, life outside the church, it's fine.
00:35:38.221 --> 00:35:38.460
I don't...
00:35:38.782 --> 00:35:39.081
I miss...
00:35:39.554 --> 00:35:40.835
The social side of it, like I said.
00:35:40.855 --> 00:35:42.197
I miss friends.
00:35:42.257 --> 00:35:42.936
I miss the singing.
00:35:42.956 --> 00:35:44.219
I miss the gatherings.
00:35:44.938 --> 00:35:49.804
And I do miss having those kind of what I felt were spiritual moments at the time.
00:35:50.625 --> 00:35:53.347
Other than that, I don't beat myself up for it.
00:35:53.588 --> 00:35:58.172
I don't go seeking out anti-Mormon things or pro-Mormon things.
00:35:58.431 --> 00:36:00.855
If I hear things or somebody sends me a link, I'll read it.
00:36:01.695 --> 00:36:07.161
But for me, it's something that I was into for a while and I'm not now.
00:36:07.280 --> 00:36:08.342
It doesn't affect me.
00:36:08.865 --> 00:36:10.407
Caroline's got a very different
00:36:10.608 --> 00:37:12.059
outlook I am more upset I am more upset about being deceived you know that bothers me however I can say this hand on heart I am 100% happier outside the church than I ever was in it partly because of my personality because I am a if I'm not being 100% faithful or doing everything 100% if I'm not saying my scriptures every day if I'm not say my prayers but every day I would whip myself on the back that's the type of person I am I probably try to be too perfect which is like nobody can be perfect but you're taught to actually try to be as perfect as possible and I did beat myself up if I wasn't getting things right or if I felt I was falling short and I don't have that now I think the words I used to somebody was I feel like a grown up now I can make my own decisions If I want to have a glass of wine with my dinner, I'll have a glass of wine with my dinner.
00:37:12.539 --> 00:37:19.550
I do not need somebody else telling me now how to behave, what to eat, what to drink, what to wear.
00:37:19.650 --> 00:37:28.240
As a woman, garments were just, you know, I feel that the pressure is off me.
00:37:28.581 --> 00:37:29.722
I can just be who I am.
00:37:29.983 --> 00:37:37.414
On the five years where I was inactive, because I still had a testimony, it wasn't like that then.
00:37:38.114 --> 00:37:39.315
that we're still in the back of my head.
00:37:39.576 --> 00:37:40.376
You're doing things wrong.
00:37:40.458 --> 00:37:41.398
You should be church.
00:37:41.418 --> 00:37:43.641
You should do da-da-da-da-da.
00:37:43.661 --> 00:37:55.820
But now that I know all the things I know and I'm 100% happy in myself that I've come to the right decision about these things that I know, I have no guilt.
00:37:56.481 --> 00:37:57.003
There's no guilt.
00:37:57.262 --> 00:37:58.043
I can still be me.
00:37:58.105 --> 00:37:59.266
I can still be a good person.
00:37:59.306 --> 00:38:00.527
I can still be a nice person.
00:38:01.268 --> 00:38:05.856
I just don't have that guilt of having to be perfect
00:38:06.317 --> 00:38:06.878
all the time.
00:38:07.041 --> 00:38:22.222
There's another interesting difference in the two of us that for someone from a size background and a non-church background, I still believe that there is something, someone, some kind of being, a god, gods, whatever.
00:38:22.262 --> 00:38:28.090
And I don't know where or how to find that, but I still feel there is a spiritual side to people.
00:38:28.429 --> 00:38:28.771
And that's...
00:38:28.951 --> 00:38:29.751
And Caroline...
00:38:30.193 --> 00:38:33.938
Yeah, it's actually one of the things that I'm angry at the church about.
00:38:34.690 --> 00:38:37.414
is that it's robbed me of my belief in God.
00:38:38.396 --> 00:38:44.447
Because I always had it, like I say, for a child, for a tiny child getting sent to the Baptist Sunday School when I was about five.
00:38:45.628 --> 00:38:47.532
I just always believed in a God.
00:38:47.632 --> 00:39:00.273
I remember, so the lessons on the Sunday, the Baptist was in our local primary school, but once a year we'd all go, we'd all walk down to the actual church building that was in Dalkey for a presentation, you know.
00:39:00.610 --> 00:39:06.197
we'd get something really lovely because you had perfect attendance or whatever, the kind of things they do in that church.
00:39:06.699 --> 00:39:10.244
And my granddad came with my mum to one of these presentations.
00:39:10.864 --> 00:39:18.795
And my mum told me later, my granddad kind of nudged her in the arm and he went, she takes us really seriously, doesn't she?
00:39:18.835 --> 00:39:19.577
Like as a child.
00:39:19.996 --> 00:39:24.623
So even they could see that I was a firm believer in a God.
00:39:24.943 --> 00:39:30.054
Now I just think, I prayed so hard for you to tell me which church was true.
00:39:30.175 --> 00:39:33.800
This is where I thought you sent me and it's not true.
00:39:33.820 --> 00:39:36.103
So are you even there now?
00:39:37.324 --> 00:39:38.726
It has robbed me of my belief.
00:39:38.827 --> 00:39:40.047
I wouldn't say I'm atheist.
00:39:40.989 --> 00:39:43.393
I'm certainly not sure anymore.
00:39:43.592 --> 00:39:48.380
And that makes me angry because I always had a belief in God for as long as I can remember.
00:39:48.420 --> 00:39:50.481
And it's been taken from me.
00:39:51.523 --> 00:39:52.324
It just makes me sad.
00:39:55.809 --> 00:39:56.030
Jim?
00:39:57.442 --> 00:40:06.251
Well, listening to your story and listening to your experiences, I feel a number of connections with you.
00:40:06.411 --> 00:40:09.054
One of them being the fact that you have twins.
00:40:11.175 --> 00:40:14.800
We have identical twin boys who are both a BYU at the moment.
00:40:15.460 --> 00:40:23.708
They're 23 years old and anybody that can survive raising twins automatically has my respect.
00:40:25.442 --> 00:40:27.927
You also mentioned the CES letter.
00:40:27.947 --> 00:40:28.027
Yeah.
00:40:30.092 --> 00:40:40.574
And so I sort of came to prominence in this kind of podcasting space because I wrote a line-by-line response to the CES letter.
00:40:41.677 --> 00:40:41.757
Okay.
00:40:41.777 --> 00:40:45.585
And I eventually ended up meeting Jeremy Runnels.
00:40:45.605 --> 00:40:45.885
Jeremy Runnels.
00:40:46.402 --> 00:40:51.128
who wrote the CES letter, and I consider him a friend at this point.
00:40:51.228 --> 00:40:56.735
We had a really lovely lunch together, and we've seen each other a number of times since.
00:40:58.476 --> 00:41:11.853
But his story, I think, is very similar to your story in terms of this idea that it was never anywhere on his radar that he was going to leave the church.
00:41:13.114 --> 00:41:21.141
And he ended up listening to We had Hans Mattson on here, who's a former free authority.
00:41:21.501 --> 00:41:22.842
Yeah, I know about him as well.
00:41:22.902 --> 00:41:23.264
Swedish
00:41:23.324 --> 00:41:23.824
Rescue.
00:41:23.864 --> 00:41:29.813
And Jeremy had heard from the Swedish Rescue that, I think it was Marlon K.
00:41:29.853 --> 00:41:31.956
Jensen who said that there are people leaving.
00:41:31.996 --> 00:41:44.233
We've never seen a greater amount of apostasy since Kirkland than what we're having now over these issues.
00:41:44.610 --> 00:41:45.130
Yeah.
00:41:45.150 --> 00:41:46.914
And so you are not alone.
00:41:47.134 --> 00:41:48.315
There are a number of people.
00:41:48.615 --> 00:41:51.840
I'm sure you've discovered that as you've gone through this.
00:41:51.860 --> 00:42:01.094
As I listen to you, there are a couple of things that jump out at me that are sort of common in these kinds of stories.
00:42:02.498 --> 00:42:10.048
One being you went to a trusted, respected church leader.
00:42:10.128 --> 00:42:12.652
You went to your stake president with some of these questions.
00:42:13.134 --> 00:42:13.213
Yeah.
00:42:13.730 --> 00:42:16.213
And they didn't have any answers for you.
00:42:17.474 --> 00:42:21.181
And I see that over and over and over again.
00:42:21.201 --> 00:42:35.501
And one of the things that I've concluded with regard to how that works is I think very often, and Ian, you can correct me as you've been in a stake presidency.
00:42:35.621 --> 00:42:36.101
I have not.
00:42:36.143 --> 00:42:38.947
I've been in a couple of bishoprics, but I've never been in a stake presidency.
00:42:40.349 --> 00:42:58.815
Very often, when somebody goes to a stake leader or a bishop or some other trusted leader and they bring up some kind of historical or doctrinal issue that's troubling them, the response they get is, I think, motivated by fear.
00:43:00.016 --> 00:43:00.096
Yeah.
00:43:00.115 --> 00:43:03.780
Because the stake president or the bishop, they don't know either.
00:43:03.820 --> 00:43:09.726
They're a lot like your friend who says, I know there are problems with the church, but I don't want to know what they are.
00:43:10.498 --> 00:43:15.264
You know, I want to stay ignorant because that's how I can hold on to my testimony.
00:43:16.487 --> 00:43:27.503
And that's, I think, an increasing problem is that the resources to deal with these kinds of questions just aren't there.
00:43:27.545 --> 00:43:28.887
Did
00:43:29.387 --> 00:43:30.289
the essays help?
00:43:30.849 --> 00:43:35.637
In Ian's case, the essays made the problem worse.
00:43:35.737 --> 00:43:37.739
I think they made the problem worse for a lot of people.
00:43:38.001 --> 00:43:38.782
Me too, yeah.
00:43:39.362 --> 00:43:47.114
I mean, Jeremy kept saying, today's anti-Mormon lies are tomorrow's gospel topics essays.
00:43:48.898 --> 00:43:53.766
You know, the things that we were taught, particularly about race and the priesthood.
00:43:54.967 --> 00:44:10.170
You know, I didn't go to church this last Sunday because I go to music and the spoken word, but my wife came back from church and said that there was this huge discussion in Relief Society about by somebody who was mad about the race in the priesthood essay.
00:44:10.210 --> 00:44:12.175
And they said, it's wrong, it's absolutely wrong.
00:44:12.215 --> 00:44:13.436
And it was only written by men.
00:44:13.536 --> 00:44:14.739
It wasn't written by prophets.
00:44:16.121 --> 00:44:27.539
Okay, well, I mean, all of this, as I listened to you, I mean, my heart breaks because I can hear your faithfulness.
00:44:27.778 --> 00:44:37.264
I can hear your commitment and I can hear the disappointment that comes out when the church isn't what you wanted it to be or expected it to be.
00:44:37.284 --> 00:44:43.735
And, and, you know, I've gone through that in a number of different circumstances.
00:44:43.795 --> 00:44:53.690
I'm sort of going through it right now in that I'm still very frustrated with the fact that two thirds of American Latter-day Saints decided that fascism is a good thing.
00:44:53.731 --> 00:45:01.603
And, and, you know, and I like, You talk about your bishop that didn't have the discernment.
00:45:01.822 --> 00:45:04.286
It's like, we're the guys with the gift of the Holy ghost.
00:45:04.347 --> 00:45:07.512
We're the ones supposed to, to note from error.
00:45:07.672 --> 00:45:11.257
And we've thrown in with the worst possible human being in the world.
00:45:11.617 --> 00:45:11.818
Yeah.
00:45:12.318 --> 00:45:13.981
You know, it kind of is like it and looks like it.
00:45:14.822 --> 00:45:15.003
Yeah.
00:45:15.123 --> 00:45:30.943
I mean, it's just, so, so I'd still struggle with these things, but I, I have, and I've shared this a number of times, but I have felt like, an answer to prayer that this is where God wants me.
00:45:30.983 --> 00:45:36.632
This is where I can do the most good, and this is where I'm committed to stay.
00:45:37.353 --> 00:45:40.139
Everybody's
00:45:40.179 --> 00:45:42.342
different, and I don't want to...
00:45:42.864 --> 00:45:50.780
I mean, there are a lot of people that wrestle with that, and they don't get that answer, or they get an answer that's entirely different, and It is not my place to judge that.
00:45:50.800 --> 00:45:51.802
It's not my place.
00:45:53.443 --> 00:45:57.447
I think every member of the church, you talk about cafeteria Mormons.
00:45:58.509 --> 00:46:02.853
I think every member of the church is a cafeteria Mormon, whether they realize it or not.
00:46:02.873 --> 00:46:08.300
Everybody lives their own version of what the gospel is.
00:46:08.360 --> 00:46:10.903
They place emphasis on the things that matter to them.
00:46:10.923 --> 00:46:13.786
They de-emphasize the things that don't matter to them.
00:46:13.806 --> 00:46:20.065
I mean, they don't think about it in those terms, But the reality is, I don't think it's possible.
00:46:20.565 --> 00:46:29.735
The church, there isn't a version of the church that exists independent of the lived experience of the members of the church.
00:46:30.456 --> 00:46:33.019
And each person's lived experience is different.
00:46:33.239 --> 00:46:37.704
Each person's lived experience has a different focus, has a different...
00:46:38.224 --> 00:46:45.914
Anyway, so with all of that said, I believe...
00:46:47.393 --> 00:46:59.567
very strongly that the greatest problem in the church, it all boils down to the false doctrine of prophetic infallibility.
00:47:01.188 --> 00:47:06.112
You talk about the fact that you were taught, you know, these are prophets and they're always right.
00:47:06.833 --> 00:47:08.135
Church, it never be wrong.
00:47:08.175 --> 00:47:11.818
And then you find places where the church is wrong.
00:47:11.838 --> 00:47:12.880
Yeah.
00:47:12.900 --> 00:47:14.461
And it's not stupid.
00:47:14.914 --> 00:47:20.440
Well, and it's not even, I mean, the phrase that people use is faith crisis.
00:47:20.739 --> 00:47:27.947
I think the correct phrase or the phrase that's more accurate is trust crisis.
00:47:29.630 --> 00:47:29.690
Yes.
00:47:30.231 --> 00:47:32.193
You no longer trust the church.
00:47:32.253 --> 00:47:34.534
You no longer trust the leaders of the church.
00:47:35.235 --> 00:47:42.664
And that's exacerbated by being taught over and over again that these men cannot make mistakes.
00:47:42.864 --> 00:47:44.405
And then you find a mistake.
00:47:45.250 --> 00:47:47.592
And then you say, well, how can I trust them ever again?
00:47:47.632 --> 00:47:56.184
And I think if, and the other thing, Andrew, you talk about this idea of, you know, there aren't always speaking as prophets.
00:47:57.106 --> 00:47:58.307
Sometimes they speak as prophets.
00:47:58.327 --> 00:48:01.771
Sometimes they speak as men, you know, and were they speaking as a prophet?
00:48:01.791 --> 00:48:02.813
Were they speaking as a man?
00:48:02.853 --> 00:48:12.626
And I really think that if the church is going to go forward in a healthy, sustainable way, we have to get rid of that dichotomy.
00:48:12.706 --> 00:48:23.735
We have to accept the reality that that every time a prophet speaks, they are speaking as a man, even when they are speaking as a prophet.
00:48:24.215 --> 00:48:31.824
That there is never a time when their agency is extracted from them and they are incapable of making a mistake.
00:48:32.505 --> 00:48:42.376
They can get up at the pulpit, and I think the promise that prophets will never lead us astray is a promise of intent, not impact.
00:48:43.677 --> 00:48:54.237
Meaning, The promise is that the Lord will never allow someone to deliberately try to derail the church, that their intentions will be good.
00:48:54.838 --> 00:49:00.284
And if they are trying to derail the church, then I think they will be removed.
00:49:01.005 --> 00:49:04.590
But that does not mean that they can't wander in the wilderness for 40 years.
00:49:05.311 --> 00:49:07.494
They can't make significant mistakes.
00:49:08.034 --> 00:49:19.199
I mean, when you talk about mistakes, you know, a lot of members of the church sort of round off the edges of that by saying, well, yeah, they can make mistakes.
00:49:19.260 --> 00:49:20.762
They can forget your birthday.
00:49:20.862 --> 00:49:26.307
They can make those kinds of mistakes.
00:49:26.829 --> 00:49:30.773
But when they get up and they preach, they can never make a mistake.
00:49:30.833 --> 00:49:52.278
And it's like, well, guys, if you believe that, then you have to reconcile, to use Ian's word, Some terrible, horrible things, particularly that Brigham Young said about race, that interracial relationships should be punished with death on the spot, and that this is the law of God that will always be so.
00:49:52.298 --> 00:50:03.657
If you can't just say, well, Brigham Young was really quite wrong on that point, then you have to just do these, and I hate the phrase mental gymnastics because I think it's cliche.
00:50:04.038 --> 00:50:04.318
Yeah.
00:50:05.121 --> 00:50:08.865
That's the phrase you were looking for, the mental gymnastics.
00:50:10.146 --> 00:50:21.719
But if you can accept that fallibility is not a bug, it's a feature, it's the purpose of mortality.
00:50:22.601 --> 00:50:30.650
We have a theology where we believe that we came to this earth solely for the purpose of making mistakes.
00:50:31.074 --> 00:50:33.717
of doing things wrong and learning from them.
00:50:33.757 --> 00:50:41.208
And that's why we needed a savior who essentially is paying for our education, if you will, at an infinite cost.
00:50:41.527 --> 00:50:43.471
And we're just thinking that about the leaders, don't we?
00:50:44.012 --> 00:50:53.784
I don't know what level it is, if it's the stake, the 70s, or the stake for the first presidency where we suddenly, we start thinking that they are not making mistakes anymore.
00:50:54.666 --> 00:50:55.887
That's interesting.
00:50:56.588 --> 00:50:57.851
No, that's exactly right.
00:50:58.291 --> 00:51:07.480
It'd also be very difficult to do and you've got all the other members who would shoot you down in flames if you dared to say, that's not right, he's made a mistake there.
00:51:08.242 --> 00:51:21.922
You know, especially, you know, I'm trying to say this nicely, especially American Utah Mormons, you know, they really, you just cannot go against the prophet's teachings or you're just the worst of the worst.
00:51:21.942 --> 00:51:22.063
I
00:51:22.362 --> 00:51:26.548
think, Jim, for me, your finger right on it is how the church addresses it now.
00:51:26.929 --> 00:51:58.581
If there were people that when members have questions like we do if they're willing to discuss them not just say well you obviously don't have enough faith or you're listening to anti-mormon things if they're willing to talk about them more that would help members to stay in and then a whole sea change has to take place within the membership to look at each other and the leaders and not be judgmental and realise the leaders are just us but in a higher calling and that was never what we were
00:51:59.938 --> 00:52:01.699
No, that is exactly right.
00:52:02.780 --> 00:52:13.130
You know, when I was 18 years old, I was at the University of Southern California, and I went and checked out a copy of The Godmakers, which was the big anti-Mormon book in the 80s.
00:52:13.231 --> 00:52:15.032
It was the CES letter of its time.
00:52:15.092 --> 00:52:19.016
Jeremy hates it when I say that, but that's kind of the way it is.
00:52:19.936 --> 00:52:22.378
And that's where I learned a lot of these troubling issues.
00:52:23.199 --> 00:52:32.059
And I was in a unique situation in that I took my doubts and questions— to two people particularly.
00:52:32.320 --> 00:52:39.389
One was my father, and the other was my uncle, who was also the stake president in Los Angeles.
00:52:40.230 --> 00:52:41.711
I'm not a Utah Mormon by...
00:52:41.731 --> 00:52:49.760
I grew up in Southern California, so when you say Utah Mormon, I'm not offended, even though I've lived in Utah much longer than I've lived in Southern California now.
00:52:50.902 --> 00:52:57.030
But both of them were patient, kind...
00:52:57.793 --> 00:53:00.998
and were able to help me sort of walk through these things.
00:53:01.739 --> 00:53:08.570
And they didn't have the kind of fear response because I think, Andrew, that when they say to you, you don't have enough faith, you shouldn't be listening to this.
00:53:09.693 --> 00:53:11.476
That's coming from a place of fear.
00:53:11.516 --> 00:53:15.141
That's coming from, well, I've never listened to this and I don't know the answer.
00:53:15.222 --> 00:53:19.168
And all I can tell you is you shouldn't have listened to it and you're bad.
00:53:19.208 --> 00:53:24.697
And they start to shame you instead of actually dealing with your questions.
00:53:25.793 --> 00:53:30.039
And that, I think, has just, we keep digging that hole.
00:53:30.059 --> 00:53:35.864
I mean, that's now essentially the response.
00:53:35.965 --> 00:53:45.275
I mean, we've had several talks in conference and at BYU devotionals and other places where they've addressed faith crisis.
00:53:46.637 --> 00:53:51.501
And the main thing they do to address it is essentially shame the person.
00:53:52.226 --> 00:53:54.969
He was Elder Renlund.
00:53:54.989 --> 00:53:56.210
He used this analogy of...
00:53:56.550 --> 00:53:57.331
Lazy learners.
00:53:58.331 --> 00:54:00.534
Lazy learners, you're the lax disciples.
00:54:01.335 --> 00:54:04.197
But it's Elder Renlund who used this analogy of...
00:54:04.237 --> 00:54:11.204
There's this guy, this kid, essentially, that's out drowning.
00:54:12.346 --> 00:54:17.210
And this old fisherman comes and picks him up in a battered kind of boat.
00:54:17.331 --> 00:54:19.833
And the kid gets in the boat and starts asking for...
00:54:20.769 --> 00:54:49.617
uh perrier water and only gets canteen water and then is disgusted because this boat isn't nice enough even though it saved his life and then he jumps out of the boat and gets eaten by sharks i mean that's the analogy and and so the moral of the story is if you aren't satisfied with the answers you're getting you're just like a kid who would rather drown than not drink really high quality bottled water.
00:54:49.916 --> 00:54:54.184
I mean, it's, it's the thing.
00:54:54.224 --> 00:55:10.751
And the other thing the church does, or at least has gotten better at, uh, but the church does acknowledge that they are capable of making mistakes in, um, what's the word I'm looking for in general.
00:55:11.273 --> 00:55:13.556
I mean, theoretically, exactly.
00:55:13.597 --> 00:55:14.157
That's the word.
00:55:14.465 --> 00:55:16.728
Theoretically, yes, the church can make mistakes.
00:55:16.847 --> 00:55:19.931
And then the minute you say, okay, which ones?
00:55:20.851 --> 00:55:22.554
Tell me a mistake.
00:55:24.675 --> 00:55:26.717
Then you're not allowed to do that at all.
00:55:26.797 --> 00:55:30.322
I mean, Ian talks a lot about then President Uchtdorf.
00:55:30.382 --> 00:55:36.668
He's now Elder Uchtdorf, but he was in the first presidency when he gave that wonderful talk, Come Join With Us.
00:55:37.068 --> 00:55:41.893
And he said, there are times in our history when leaders have simply made mistakes.
00:55:43.233 --> 00:55:51.264
And a lot of people heard that and went, well, yeah, of course they made mistakes, but then they sort of, but they were these kinds of mistakes.
00:55:51.284 --> 00:55:52.324
They were tiny mistakes.
00:55:52.385 --> 00:55:54.867
They couldn't have possibly made big mistakes.
00:55:56.269 --> 00:56:07.364
And so the church doctrinally, in his very first press conference as a member of the first presidency, Dallin H.
00:56:07.523 --> 00:56:10.827
Oaks said, we do not believe in infallible leaders.
00:56:12.289 --> 00:56:20.364
And So the church is happy to say that, but they're not happy if you have any follow-up questions.
00:56:21.586 --> 00:56:25.873
If you want to say, well, okay, so leaders aren't infallible, so leaders can make mistakes.
00:56:25.934 --> 00:56:28.478
Can you please tell me, was this a mistake?
00:56:28.538 --> 00:56:29.599
Could this have been a mistake?
00:56:30.221 --> 00:56:37.150
I mean, the gospel topics essays, one of the reasons why I think they're counterproductive is that they're sort of a half measure.
00:56:38.333 --> 00:56:41.257
That yes, okay, we acknowledge there's been a problem.
00:56:41.954 --> 00:56:46.380
Uh, but we don't want to let anybody know that these essays even exist.
00:56:46.481 --> 00:56:48.422
So we're going to just release them quietly.
00:56:48.443 --> 00:56:52.750
And then when you read in particular, yeah, they're very hard to find.
00:56:52.789 --> 00:57:11.728
And, and you read the, the race and the priesthood essay and they acknowledge that everything that we taught about, you know, black people bearing the curse of Cain, black people, uh, being fence sitters or less righteous in the pre-mortal existence.
00:57:13.670 --> 00:57:24.364
All these things, all those are wrong, but they're not willing to cross that line and say, and the priesthood ban itself was wrong too.
00:57:25.306 --> 00:57:27.349
All they can say is- That's where the
00:57:27.469 --> 00:57:31.313
issue comes in though, because if they do do that, how many people are going to walk away?
00:57:32.449 --> 00:57:34.853
Well, but the thing is, I mean, you're right.
00:57:35.072 --> 00:57:35.954
They handled it properly.
00:57:35.974 --> 00:57:36.855
They wouldn't want an ailment.
00:57:37.155 --> 00:57:53.012
Well, the thing is, I think short term, if the church were to come out and admit, okay, yes, we have been wrong on things, large and small, including race in the priesthood and other things, I think there will be some people that walk away.
00:57:53.253 --> 00:57:57.277
But I think we are...
00:57:57.318 --> 00:58:00.621
We are...
00:58:00.994 --> 00:58:03.876
selling the future at the cost of the present.
00:58:05.878 --> 00:58:13.045
Because I think the minute the church is able to admit fallibility, they are able to build trust.
00:58:13.545 --> 00:58:21.134
It becomes easier to trust somebody if they can come to you and say, you know what, I was wrong, and I hope you can forgive me, but I was wrong.
00:58:21.173 --> 00:58:23.536
That's somebody you end up trusting.
00:58:23.576 --> 00:58:35.596
If the church were to be able to do that long-term, people then, it's like, well, yeah, I discovered the church really goofed up on this.
00:58:36.076 --> 00:58:40.621
Do you not think, though, that that's taken away the whole selling of the church?
00:58:41.382 --> 00:58:47.449
That we have a living prophet who talks to God, tells us how to live our lives, guides us.
00:58:48.469 --> 00:58:52.373
That's the whole crux to me of the church.
00:58:53.155 --> 00:58:55.056
It's one of the biggest differences in another church.
00:58:55.097 --> 00:58:57.480
There's a living prophet who talks to God.
00:58:58.380 --> 00:59:04.773
And if they then say, well, maybe he doesn't always talk to God and maybe he does tell us things wrong and there is a fallibility.
00:59:05.554 --> 00:59:14.688
That's a big thing for them to lose their claim of being, you know, the church that has God as its head who actually speaks to a living prophet.
00:59:15.268 --> 00:59:15.969
They would lose that.
00:59:16.951 --> 00:59:44.335
Yeah, I think what you've just said, Caroline, is the most serious red thread running through the entire tapestry of the church because, you know, the whole premise of the church is on the divinity, you know, the prophet and the church claims to be the only true church upon the face of the earth, section 130 of the Doctrine and Covenants, and that the prophet is not only the prophet for the members of the church and investigators, but the prophet for the world.
00:59:44.394 --> 00:59:52.563
In fact, he is the definitive, exclusive, sole mouthpiece of Jesus Christ here on the earth.
00:59:53.125 --> 00:59:56.909
And so we're asked to put our complete trust in him.
00:59:57.666 --> 01:00:03.394
and that we're told that he will never lead as a stray, literally, not just figuratively, but literally.
01:00:04.297 --> 01:00:14.534
And so the problem, I think, and Jim's right, I think it's that problem of infallibility with leaders, is that when is the prophet speaking as a man or as a prophet?
01:00:15.297 --> 01:00:21.724
You made a point earlier, Andy, about how do we really know if he's speaking as a prophet or if he's speaking as a man?
01:00:21.744 --> 01:00:22.724
I mean, that's a whole other...
01:00:23.346 --> 01:00:33.074
There's never been a talk that I recall at church conference or even in a state conference around that subject about when do we know if he's speaking as a man or not.
01:00:33.094 --> 01:00:40.541
I think the church will never go there because that is the keystone, right, I think, of the church.
01:00:40.581 --> 01:00:42.103
You know, the church...
01:00:42.563 --> 01:00:44.505
Prophets have said the church rests or falls...
01:00:45.057 --> 01:00:55.748
on whether the prophet is, if Joseph Smith was a prophet or not, whether we have a living prophet or not, and whether the Book of Mormon is the word of God or not, being the keystone.
01:00:56.349 --> 01:01:09.601
And so that fundamental building block there, if there's any doubt in people's minds whether the prophet is making a mistake, why on earth would you follow somebody at the risk of them making a mistake?
01:01:09.621 --> 01:01:13.025
And the church has made some serious mistakes, very serious mistakes.
01:01:13.570 --> 01:01:35.744
introduce those very strict changes in regards to LGBTQ in 2015, Jim, in regards to children staying with one of the gay parents and restrictions on children in terms of getting baptized, etc.
01:01:35.764 --> 01:01:39.009
Restrictions, obviously, on people who were gay going to the church.
01:01:39.088 --> 01:01:40.490
That was another broader conversation.
01:01:40.891 --> 01:01:41.873
And then it reversed it.
01:01:41.913 --> 01:01:43.474
Was it 2019, Jim?
01:01:43.494 --> 01:01:46.259
I think they reversed it.
01:01:46.880 --> 01:01:47.661
Two and a half years later.
01:01:47.701 --> 01:01:50.929
So, That's one of many examples where the church...
01:01:51.530 --> 01:01:59.039
And by the way, on that point, just as I want to highlight this, President Nelson, was he the prophet at the time, Jim, at that time?
01:01:59.079 --> 01:02:00.740
In 2015,
01:02:00.981 --> 01:02:01.521
I think?
01:02:02.023 --> 01:02:08.710
He was the president of the Quorum of the Twelve at a time when President Monson, who was the prophet, was incapacitated.
01:02:09.331 --> 01:02:09.831
Right, okay.
01:02:10.172 --> 01:02:10.733
I remember
01:02:11.755 --> 01:02:21.385
one of the prophets, it could have been President Nelson, I think it was, where he went into great lengths, I think he's on video saying this as well, describing the revelatory process.
01:02:21.865 --> 01:02:23.108
No, it was President Nelson.
01:02:23.329 --> 01:02:26.914
While he was president, he described, he was at BYU Hawaii.
01:02:27.516 --> 01:02:27.657
Yeah.
01:02:27.836 --> 01:02:37.715
And he described that they were all wrestling with what to do in the wake of the legalization of gay marriage throughout the United States by the United States Supreme Court.
01:02:38.936 --> 01:02:46.150
And But then finally, the spirit of revelation rested on the prophet, President Thomas Monson, who spoke the word of the Lord.
01:02:46.170 --> 01:02:52.599
And then there was a unanimous consent among the apostles.
01:02:53.440 --> 01:03:01.451
And the problem with that is that none of the other apostles recall any such meeting of this taking place.
01:03:02.751 --> 01:03:17.188
And in fact, Elder Christofferson, who was called upon by to speak directly by church PR about it, learned about it from the press, learned about the policy change from the press.
01:03:17.347 --> 01:03:52.398
So when President Nelson said that, it just caused a lot of consternation because people, the other apostles did not back up that there had been that kind of a meeting and when the policy was reversed three and a half years later, there was really no explanation as to why there was one revelation three and a half years prior that said this, and now we're receiving another, because they sold the reversal as a revelation too.
01:03:53.019 --> 01:03:56.965
And these were diametrically opposed to each other.
01:03:57.005 --> 01:04:01.572
And yet they were both, so apparently God changed his mind.
01:04:03.014 --> 01:04:04.376
They
01:04:04.416 --> 01:04:04.737
didn't.
01:04:05.762 --> 01:04:10.786
They didn't explain it, and it caused a lot of problems, and it caused a lot of trust crises.
01:04:11.947 --> 01:04:26.503
It's interesting when you talk about the fact that this is the selling point of the church, that the selling point of the church is we have a prophet that speaks directly to God.
01:04:27.324 --> 01:04:46.806
See, I don't believe that President Nelson or any prophet except on very rare occasions, I don't believe they experience a connection to the divine any different from the one that you and I experience.
01:04:47.367 --> 01:04:54.672
That they get their revelation through promptings, through prayer, through the same sort of process.
01:04:54.733 --> 01:04:56.255
These are the same kinds of people.
01:04:56.815 --> 01:05:15.387
I think there are exceptions to that, but I spent a great deal of my time Growing up, particularly, I'm not sure when I finally decided this was nonsense, but I grew up thinking that, okay, yeah, the apostles meet every week in the upper rooms of the temple.
01:05:16.469 --> 01:05:19.873
And there's probably an extra chair there for when Jesus comes.
01:05:20.695 --> 01:05:31.411
And he doesn't come, maybe he doesn't come every week, but, you know, sometimes he brings the refreshments, you know, so he shows up every other week, maybe, you know, I no longer believe that.
01:05:32.192 --> 01:05:42.889
And, and I, You know, when pressed, the apostles, they try very hard to sort of maintain an ambiguity about that.
01:05:43.030 --> 01:05:47.297
It's like, well, when they're asked specifically, have you seen Jesus Christ?
01:05:48.639 --> 01:05:48.719
Yeah.
01:05:48.739 --> 01:05:51.684
They give these sort of evasive answers.
01:05:52.365 --> 01:05:57.353
And to me, prophets and apostles of the Lord would not do that.
01:05:58.235 --> 01:05:59.318
Like, they would be lost.
01:06:00.353 --> 01:06:05.862
One of your tithing questions, are you honest in all your dealings with your fellow man?
01:06:05.902 --> 01:06:10.989
And I went out of my way to make sure I could answer that.
01:06:11.170 --> 01:06:13.454
I could not tell a lie if my life depended on it.
01:06:14.275 --> 01:06:15.856
But the church is lying to us.
01:06:16.378 --> 01:06:20.164
And the prophets or the apostles will not come out and be honest about these things.
01:06:22.987 --> 01:06:23.608
Yeah, it's just...
01:06:26.052 --> 01:06:26.974
I don't even know how to...
01:06:27.106 --> 01:06:29.349
You're describing a trust crisis.
01:06:29.570 --> 01:06:30.530
Yeah, yeah, yeah,
01:06:30.831 --> 01:06:31.954
definitely.
01:06:32.815 --> 01:06:41.148
I often wonder how the church is going to survive, especially with the way society changes now with the LGBTQ+, and all the other issues going on.
01:06:41.708 --> 01:06:45.434
And it does have to try and reorganize or rebrand itself.
01:06:45.795 --> 01:06:57.108
Like you said, Jim, to admit that prophets are men, and even if they don't go as far as to say that they're always speaking as men, but to admit the fact that They can make mistakes.
01:06:57.168 --> 01:07:05.619
It'd be interesting to see how they can save the church in some kind of form because there was lots about it that I like and still like.
01:07:06.420 --> 01:07:24.706
And there's lots of things in Christian faith and other faiths but in Christian faith that I think are great for people to learn and I enjoyed learning them in the Mormon church and it'd be sad to see that completely disappear but I don't know how it's going to survive and rebrand and move forward from this.
01:07:25.090 --> 01:07:37.003
Because they've painted themselves into a corner by telling everybody that the prophets are always right, that they will never lead you astray, and they've got these issues with the LGBTQ.
01:07:37.483 --> 01:07:43.070
And it's the same with back in the day when polygamy was a thing.
01:07:43.510 --> 01:07:46.713
And then all of a sudden they realised, oh, we're not going to be able to do this or that, the next thing.
01:07:46.753 --> 01:07:53.521
Suddenly, remarkably, there's a revelation that says we're not going to do it anymore.
01:07:54.210 --> 01:08:06.047
You know, it's just, so if it was right then, and I'm not just talking about polygamy, but if it was right then, if this prophet said that's the way it was to be, God must make some big mistakes because he's changing them.
01:08:06.547 --> 01:08:10.994
Like three and a half years later, he's changing
01:08:11.014 --> 01:08:11.235
them.
01:08:11.255 --> 01:08:21.010
With race in the priesthood, we are more comfortable saying God was a racist than we are saying that Brigham Young was a racist.
01:08:21.029 --> 01:08:21.310
That's right.
01:08:21.474 --> 01:08:22.496
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:08:22.515 --> 01:08:24.278
Because we can't in Africa be wrong.
01:08:25.100 --> 01:08:25.300
Right.
01:08:26.822 --> 01:08:36.818
But getting back to your whole idea of this, you know, the central thing is the president of the church, the prophet, that's the key feature of the church.
01:08:37.939 --> 01:08:46.654
I think the way forward is that the key feature of the church, not a bug, but the feature of the church is its fallibility.
01:08:46.978 --> 01:08:59.850
That we embrace, you know, we have this whole theology of this idea of the reason we came to earth is that we lived in the presence of God for an eternity before we came here.
01:09:00.992 --> 01:09:04.755
And we didn't have to exercise faith.
01:09:04.854 --> 01:09:15.685
We didn't have to choose good versus evil because the preeminent example, we always knew what the right thing to do was because we were living in the presence of God.
01:09:16.449 --> 01:09:23.759
And we left the presence of God because the only way to learn and to grow is to be fallible.
01:09:23.779 --> 01:09:35.432
I mean, I think if the church were to not just sort of acknowledge this grudgingly, which is kind of the direction we're going, sort of, but we're not really even willing to do that.
01:09:36.213 --> 01:09:41.644
But I think it needs to be a full-on embrace of Yes, we are fallible.
01:09:42.024 --> 01:09:43.125
We make mistakes.
01:09:43.265 --> 01:09:48.390
That is the purpose of mortality, and that is why we need Jesus Christ so desperately.
01:09:48.411 --> 01:09:52.234
I think that is the only way forward.
01:09:52.555 --> 01:09:57.381
And I think that, yes, I think a lot of people will say, well, I don't need your church then.
01:09:58.542 --> 01:10:15.707
But I think a lot more will also say it's so wonderful to share this kind of community with and have this fellowship of saints who are all fallible together, even their leaders, and all of us can work together to build the kingdom of God.
01:10:15.726 --> 01:10:18.189
I think that is a powerful story.
01:10:18.210 --> 01:10:20.793
I think that's the story the church ought to be telling.
01:10:21.675 --> 01:10:24.899
And right now, it doesn't seem to be the one that we're telling.
01:10:25.060 --> 01:10:32.750
And I think that your experience demonstrates just how short we're falling on that.
01:10:34.177 --> 01:10:37.143
We're coming to the end of the podcast.
01:10:37.884 --> 01:10:44.573
Jim has articulated exactly what I was going to say, so I think that's really, really good.
01:10:44.935 --> 01:11:05.421
It ties to what you both were saying, but also what you were saying, Andy, about, you said earlier, I made some notes here, that if the church handled it differently, when people have questions and they handle it differently because the church puts so much resources into the missionary effort You know, missionaries go to the MTC.
01:11:05.541 --> 01:11:06.943
They get trained for three weeks.
01:11:06.962 --> 01:11:07.823
They learn a language.
01:11:09.926 --> 01:11:11.708
You know, they go away for two years.
01:11:12.248 --> 01:11:15.153
Huge resources behind the missionary effort, you know, globally.
01:11:15.934 --> 01:11:21.140
And the church spends hundreds of millions of dollars on the missionary effort to bring people in.
01:11:21.180 --> 01:11:29.771
And then the training that bishops get, and when I was the bishop in Dalkeith, this is the training that we got, was to, you know, when...
01:11:30.292 --> 01:11:30.993
So we'd meet with...
01:11:31.810 --> 01:11:34.011
President Watson every quarter.
01:11:34.032 --> 01:11:38.277
And we'd meet with some of the general authorities sometimes.
01:11:38.356 --> 01:11:43.782
And the training we would get is how do we more effectively and efficiently retain people that came into the church?
01:11:44.363 --> 01:11:49.287
So a lot of training and support to how to help bishops and bishoprics.
01:11:49.368 --> 01:11:52.792
And you and I served on the same bishopric, Andy, so we talked about this.
01:11:54.453 --> 01:11:57.036
How do we keep people in the church?
01:11:57.076 --> 01:11:58.658
So a lot of time, a lot of resources.
01:11:59.137 --> 01:12:01.760
You know, people get callings and they serve.
01:12:02.220 --> 01:12:11.109
And I want to highlight something we say, because it's really important, that there's a great amount of joy that comes from serving in the church.
01:12:11.710 --> 01:12:14.231
I felt it, you felt it, you feel it, Jim.
01:12:14.972 --> 01:12:20.899
And I want to, despite all these challenges, want to, and that's something, when you said earlier, Andy, you miss, I really miss that.
01:12:21.899 --> 01:12:28.064
That really resonated with me, and personally and emotionally, and I miss that deeply.
01:12:28.706 --> 01:12:35.055
And it breaks my heart that I don't have that in that way anymore.
01:12:35.136 --> 01:12:36.377
I get it in other ways now.
01:12:37.859 --> 01:12:42.847
But the reward and the fulfillment that you can have through serving the church is extraordinary.
01:12:42.868 --> 01:12:43.148
It really is.
01:12:43.668 --> 01:12:54.685
But then when you have questions and doubts, the church becomes, for me at least, and probably Caroline and you felt the same thing, becomes a place you don't feel safe anymore.
01:12:55.073 --> 01:12:56.216
to ask questions.
01:12:56.337 --> 01:12:57.078
No, you can't.
01:12:57.439 --> 01:13:06.118
And then if you do ask questions like I did, in my experience, you get labeled as a doubter and a troublemaker or whatever, right?
01:13:06.399 --> 01:13:11.509
So, and there's no, and Jim made his point earlier, there's no And you spoke to this, Andy, as well.
01:13:11.569 --> 01:13:13.972
There's very limited or virtually no resources.
01:13:14.012 --> 01:13:16.737
So all the resources are here, you know, to come into the church.
01:13:17.257 --> 01:13:21.203
Significant resources to keep people in the church, keep people active and busy, which is great.
01:13:21.805 --> 01:13:25.110
And then all of a sudden, there's virtually, it's like a cliff, a drop off.
01:13:25.150 --> 01:13:25.832
You're on your own.
01:13:25.872 --> 01:13:29.877
And the closer you go to the more difficult questions is the edge of the cliff.
01:13:30.498 --> 01:13:34.725
And you find as you get towards the cliff, all of a sudden, there's no one around you.
01:13:35.265 --> 01:13:36.207
You're there by yourself.
01:13:36.408 --> 01:13:37.328
You've got these questions.
01:13:37.550 --> 01:13:39.131
There's no support, if any.
01:13:39.773 --> 01:13:43.338
And a question I've got before we close our podcast is...
01:13:43.960 --> 01:13:47.805
And by the way, I want to thank you so much for coming on here and sharing your story and your experiences.
01:13:47.886 --> 01:13:48.167
Pleasure.
01:13:49.307 --> 01:13:51.252
You mentioned earlier that no one's reached out.
01:13:51.471 --> 01:13:52.193
You've left the church.
01:13:52.753 --> 01:13:53.295
You're happy.
01:13:53.335 --> 01:13:55.217
You feel like an adult.
01:13:55.438 --> 01:13:56.300
You've got some...
01:13:56.680 --> 01:13:58.203
You miss some things, which I...
01:13:58.743 --> 01:14:01.387
You spoke about, Andy, about the spirituality.
01:14:01.427 --> 01:14:02.550
You...
01:14:02.978 --> 01:14:08.923
But you're happy with your life and you've found a place in life and you're close to your family.
01:14:08.944 --> 01:14:13.268
Your family's now, probably Alan is probably feeling much more connected.
01:14:13.287 --> 01:14:15.229
This Jim Digital.
01:14:15.550 --> 01:14:17.171
Much more connected,
01:14:17.231 --> 01:14:17.492
yeah.
01:14:17.612 --> 01:14:19.394
And I did pick up on that.
01:14:20.113 --> 01:14:26.020
But since you talked earlier about you've had little or no support since you left the church.
01:14:26.479 --> 01:14:29.904
Has anyone asked you why you left the church?
01:14:30.384 --> 01:14:32.445
And then, okay, interesting.
01:14:32.673 --> 01:14:32.913
Not
01:14:33.494 --> 01:14:34.235
one.
01:14:34.355 --> 01:14:36.139
Not even the people that we're still close
01:14:36.158 --> 01:14:36.359
to.
01:14:36.479 --> 01:14:38.943
That topic is studiously avoided.
01:14:38.983 --> 01:14:40.444
Right, right.
01:14:40.506 --> 01:14:40.886
Interesting.
01:14:41.186 --> 01:14:44.872
And I think that's, to Jim's point, I think that's probably...
01:14:45.453 --> 01:14:51.521
From what I've can surmise from the Facebook page and things I'm on, they don't want to ask you.
01:14:51.542 --> 01:14:58.591
They're kind of told don't ask because we might tell them something that's going to ruin their church life as well.
01:14:58.652 --> 01:15:00.774
And part of you don't want to do that.
01:15:01.275 --> 01:15:04.744
Especially young listeners, we've had a Admission has come to the door a few times over the years.
01:15:04.765 --> 01:15:05.466
Because they were sent.
01:15:05.546 --> 01:15:06.686
And not because they were sent.
01:15:06.726 --> 01:15:07.488
They're knocking on doors.
01:15:08.309 --> 01:15:11.132
And it's kind of like kicking a puppy.
01:15:12.354 --> 01:15:13.395
You don't want to damage...
01:15:13.416 --> 01:15:14.016
They're out there.
01:15:14.056 --> 01:15:15.399
They're taking their time.
01:15:15.578 --> 01:15:18.261
And it must be so frightening for them as well.
01:15:18.842 --> 01:15:21.926
You don't want to dampen their enthusiasm for something.
01:15:22.006 --> 01:15:24.690
If they're getting something out of me just now, that's great.
01:15:25.252 --> 01:15:29.056
I would totally tell people my problems with the shift if they asked me.
01:15:29.237 --> 01:15:29.837
I would never...
01:15:30.337 --> 01:16:16.152
try and you know I was like this actually um even as a member I was not a pushy member that tried to you know get all my neighbors um joining the church that just wasn't me I'm not like that I would I would hope that they would come to me and ask me if they saw good things that I always thought it was better to try and be a good example and people might want to know why so I was never a pushy mormon like that and then neither am I and the other side of the coin I would not unless somebody came and specifically said what was your problems why did you leave I will never bring it up I will never go because I didn't want to take that away like I say I'm angry and sad that it's been taken from me my belief in God I don't want to do that to anybody else
01:16:16.712 --> 01:16:16.792
I
01:16:17.273 --> 01:16:17.854
don't want to do that
01:16:18.018 --> 01:16:23.904
I think that comment speaks volumes about your integrity, Carol, and yours, Andy, as well.
01:16:24.284 --> 01:16:42.323
You know, these mysteries that knock on the door, they're kids, ultimately, and they don't have, probably haven't got, they haven't had the training to deal with the tough questions that, you know, the questions that probably we didn't have maybe as mysteries at times, Jim, when you and I were serving in Scotland.
01:16:42.524 --> 01:16:48.791
As we come to a close here, the final question I have for you both, and I want to get your response to this.
01:16:48.850 --> 01:16:55.096
And I want to hand some time over to give opportunity for Jim to give his some closing thoughts that he may have.
01:16:55.837 --> 01:17:11.551
But my question for you is, with all you've experienced, you know, coming to the church car line, you came in, you know, and then you left for a while and then you came back in and you met Andy and you came back in and you had, for the most part, a wonderful experience.
01:17:12.132 --> 01:17:19.792
Then the questions came and the issues came and you've left and you're in this place, You know, now, Andy, you still believe.
01:17:21.113 --> 01:17:22.675
Caroline, you're more agnostic.
01:17:22.694 --> 01:17:23.496
You're not sure.
01:17:23.576 --> 01:17:24.077
You don't know.
01:17:24.096 --> 01:17:24.997
I'm not an
01:17:25.018 --> 01:17:25.679
atheist.
01:17:25.698 --> 01:17:26.699
Definitely not an atheist.
01:17:26.939 --> 01:17:27.600
Just not sure.
01:17:27.940 --> 01:17:28.240
Sure.
01:17:28.402 --> 01:17:30.283
And that's common as well.
01:17:30.684 --> 01:17:43.658
My question, last question is, what advice would you give someone, a couple or an individual, who's got questions and they're trying to navigate their faith?
01:17:44.298 --> 01:17:46.341
And then after your response, Jim, if you could...
01:17:47.073 --> 01:17:49.395
share your final thoughts or comments.
01:17:49.435 --> 01:17:50.717
That would be great.
01:17:51.198 --> 01:17:51.798
And then we'll close.
01:17:51.819 --> 01:17:51.859
Is
01:17:52.259 --> 01:17:56.404
this a couple that's in the church navigating faith or a couple trying to find a church?
01:17:57.203 --> 01:17:57.864
What do you mean?
01:17:57.885 --> 01:17:58.466
Navigating faith.
01:17:59.766 --> 01:18:00.307
Good question.
01:18:00.368 --> 01:18:01.569
Is that like a thumb?
01:18:02.069 --> 01:18:05.912
Yeah, somebody who is, well, whatever you want to answer.
01:18:06.052 --> 01:18:14.021
If someone is in the church, they're struggling with questions and doubts, what advice would you give them to help them navigate the faith?
01:18:14.594 --> 01:18:16.775
Oh my goodness, that is a hard one.
01:18:16.796 --> 01:18:27.707
I think because I am a genuinely honest person, like I have a, you know, my background, I have a reason, I'm not going to go into that, about why I just cannot tell lies.
01:18:28.247 --> 01:18:29.408
It ruined my childhood.
01:18:29.649 --> 01:18:31.490
My dad was the biggest flyer walker.
01:18:31.850 --> 01:18:32.771
And it's, I hate it.
01:18:33.012 --> 01:18:33.353
Cannot.
01:18:33.752 --> 01:18:42.101
So I would not, I would, I would just say to them, well, I'll give you answers to how I feel, but only if you want, mum.
01:18:42.497 --> 01:18:45.060
But I would say just be honest with yourself.
01:18:47.962 --> 01:18:48.844
Look into things.
01:18:50.085 --> 01:18:50.725
Research.
01:18:52.006 --> 01:18:53.809
Look for your answers.
01:18:55.270 --> 01:18:59.494
And then when you get them, just be honest with yourself about how you feel about them.
01:19:00.274 --> 01:19:01.856
Don't try to stay in.
01:19:01.917 --> 01:19:02.858
Don't try to get out.
01:19:03.137 --> 01:19:06.360
Just go where it takes you, I think.
01:19:06.841 --> 01:19:08.502
It's a difficult one.
01:19:08.542 --> 01:19:11.025
Try and find somebody to talk to.
01:19:12.225 --> 01:19:16.891
in the church in your bishopric or your stake try and find somebody that's willing to try
01:19:16.931 --> 01:19:45.440
and get answers to your questions and then go where those answers take you might be in might be out I would never push them in either direction I would just say try and find some answers if it's from your leaders or if it's from study looking into things being on that like that Facebook group that I joined because I was looking for answers that's that I think It's a difficult question because you don't want to rob people of their church membership.
01:19:45.520 --> 01:19:53.930
And I know, as I said in the beginning, it's easy for us here in Scotland because we're few and far between to walk away from the church.
01:19:53.951 --> 01:19:54.712
It's not a big deal.
01:19:55.372 --> 01:20:01.460
But when you're in an area where all your neighbours are Mormons and your friends that you work with are Mormons.
01:20:01.600 --> 01:20:03.943
I mean, I hear some of the stories.
01:20:04.023 --> 01:20:16.514
It breaks my heart about how one girl said that her husband had sent her a text message to say, You either get your act together, stop asking questions, or I am leaving because I want the temple marriage thing.
01:20:17.475 --> 01:20:23.663
These are things that are happening to people in the States, in particular in Utah.
01:20:25.226 --> 01:20:30.673
So you would never want to put somebody down a particular direction.
01:20:30.793 --> 01:20:32.917
All I would say is look for answers.
01:20:32.978 --> 01:20:33.238
Pray.
01:20:34.038 --> 01:20:38.826
I never prayed harder in my life than the months leading up to me walking away.
01:20:39.105 --> 01:20:40.427
I prayed so hard.
01:20:41.009 --> 01:20:45.734
Driving my car, everywhere I went, I was wrestling with myself and praying and praying and praying.
01:20:46.695 --> 01:20:48.918
And I just went to where that took me.
01:20:49.220 --> 01:20:50.862
And I'd say the same advice to other people.
01:20:51.703 --> 01:20:52.863
Go where the answers take you.
01:20:53.585 --> 01:20:55.067
Well, that's wonderful advice.
01:20:55.127 --> 01:20:55.688
Thank you so much.
01:20:55.908 --> 01:20:58.252
Jim, any closing thoughts from your end?
01:20:59.233 --> 01:21:07.904
No thoughts other than to thank both Carlene and Andy for just being such wonderful human beings and for sharing your story.
01:21:08.064 --> 01:21:08.706
I think...
01:21:09.569 --> 01:21:14.817
I think you're going to help a lot of people by sharing this and by being so open with it.
01:21:15.417 --> 01:21:15.979
I hope so.
01:21:16.699 --> 01:21:30.717
And I think you are going to help the church, whether the church realizes it or not, because there are so many people, so many good, wonderful people like you who've had similar experiences.
01:21:31.198 --> 01:21:37.787
And those of us who are still in the church need to hear these stories so that we can...
01:21:39.810 --> 01:21:42.332
you know, so that we can fix the problems.
01:21:42.993 --> 01:21:46.737
So the kind of church that you would want to come back to.
01:21:47.618 --> 01:21:47.877
Yeah.
01:21:48.438 --> 01:22:05.194
I was just going to say about helping people on the Facebook site, somebody was asking about tithing and saying she doesn't want to pay it anymore because of where the church is sending it and keeping it and blah, blah, blah, but has been indoctrinated her whole life that it's your fire insurance and your life will fall apart.
01:22:05.635 --> 01:22:07.596
And she's saying, like, how do people navigate this?
01:22:07.737 --> 01:22:08.637
What, like, how...
01:22:08.801 --> 01:22:13.029
So I actually replied to her saying, well, we stopped paying tithing a long time ago.
01:22:13.729 --> 01:22:16.795
And my husband now earns three times more than he did when we were in the church.
01:22:17.576 --> 01:22:19.658
Like the world did not fall in.
01:22:20.180 --> 01:22:33.641
And she said, these are the kind of stories that people need to hear more to take away this fear that like good people have real fear about falling in their own hearts because, well, they might be fourth, fifth generation Mormons.
01:22:33.702 --> 01:22:34.603
It's all they've ever known.
01:22:35.304 --> 01:22:36.086
And they're scared.
01:22:36.641 --> 01:22:39.405
You know, they're scared to do things, to take steps.
01:22:39.485 --> 01:22:42.189
And she says, this is what people need to hear.
01:22:42.229 --> 01:22:43.730
The world does not fall in.
01:22:43.770 --> 01:22:52.903
The sky does not fall in when you're not being completely obedient like we were told to be, which brings us background to the prophets and things that they're asking us to do.
01:22:52.922 --> 01:22:56.287
So, yeah, I hope it does help somebody, you know.
01:22:57.309 --> 01:23:00.033
Helps them to stay or leave or be happy.
01:23:00.854 --> 01:23:01.715
Yeah, happiness.
01:23:01.755 --> 01:23:03.917
That's what we all want in life is happiness.
01:23:04.078 --> 01:23:04.158
Yeah.
01:23:05.025 --> 01:23:12.454
Andy, Caroline, on behalf of our listeners, I want to thank you both for coming on and having this conversation.
01:23:12.814 --> 01:23:15.257
And on a personal note, it's so good to see you both.
01:23:16.238 --> 01:23:18.481
Our family and I love you dearly.
01:23:18.681 --> 01:23:19.802
You mean so much to us.
01:23:20.344 --> 01:23:21.345
We know you personally.
01:23:21.385 --> 01:23:27.452
Your story connects with me in a different way because I know you both.
01:23:28.073 --> 01:23:28.913
You're wonderful people.
01:23:28.953 --> 01:23:29.675
You're kind.
01:23:29.715 --> 01:23:30.536
I've served with you.
01:23:30.555 --> 01:23:32.158
I've seen the service that you've given.
01:23:32.930 --> 01:23:33.990
I can vouch for it.
01:23:34.332 --> 01:23:35.854
You gave everything, everything.
01:23:36.194 --> 01:23:37.737
I was there with you side by side.
01:23:38.597 --> 01:23:41.161
And, you know, I know you bless the lives of many.
01:23:41.282 --> 01:23:44.166
And I know this will help so many as well.
01:23:44.426 --> 01:23:49.412
And that's the point of the podcast is to share our experiences openly and honestly.
01:23:49.432 --> 01:23:54.739
Sometimes we make ourselves vulnerable, you know, when we share our stories.
01:23:54.800 --> 01:24:01.349
But good can come from that, you know, by opening up and sharing, you know, our difficulties and challenges and the questions and doubts that we have.
01:24:01.890 --> 01:24:04.974
it will connect with others who are going through the same experience.
01:24:04.993 --> 01:24:06.475
So I want to thank you sincerely so much.
01:24:07.356 --> 01:24:11.981
Jim, I want to thank you as well for your always valuable contribution.
01:24:12.002 --> 01:24:21.313
I always learn, I feel like an apprentice, and Jim's the supreme high lord commander of the universe.
01:24:21.453 --> 01:24:21.774
I learn...
01:24:22.494 --> 01:24:24.197
You're the leader, Ian.
01:24:24.256 --> 01:24:27.801
Yeah, but you're so much wiser than me.
01:24:28.841 --> 01:24:31.305
So, yeah, I'm more of the...
01:24:31.970 --> 01:25:09.872
I learn as much as anyone on these conversations and it's been incredibly helpful so I want to thank you and express our love to you and also please give Paul and Alan and the rest of the family our love I miss you all and I hope to see you in Scotland at some point next year when I'm David and I want to come to Edinburgh and so it'd be great to get together but thank you thank you Jim again for your always valuable contribution and on behalf of all the listeners thank you and on Until next time, next week when we do another podcast, we appreciate this experience that we've had with you today.
01:25:09.993 --> 01:25:10.292
Thank you.
01:25:10.774 --> 01:25:11.335
Thank you both.
01:25:11.354 --> 01:25:11.735
Thank you.
01:25:11.775 --> 01:25:12.898
Thank you all.
00:00:01.217 --> 00:00:16.812
Hello, and welcome to the latest episode of Inside Out.
00:00:17.173 --> 00:00:23.039
My name is Ian Wilkes, and I'm here with my podcast partner, partner in crime, Mr.
00:00:23.239 --> 00:00:25.242
Jim Bennett, the logical Mr.
00:00:25.301 --> 00:00:25.762
Jim Bennett.
00:00:26.682 --> 00:00:27.303
Logical.
00:00:27.524 --> 00:00:27.943
Okay.
00:00:28.144 --> 00:00:29.326
I'm a Vulcan here.
00:00:30.850 --> 00:00:32.411
Yes,
00:00:32.712 --> 00:00:34.654
peace and prosper, Kim, peace and prosper.
00:00:34.673 --> 00:00:35.695
Live long and prosper.
00:00:36.496 --> 00:00:51.790
And Jim, I'm really excited about this week's podcast because I have two of our favorite people on the podcast, two people that myself and my family love dearly, and two people in the family that we've known for quite some time.
00:00:51.810 --> 00:00:57.335
We have Andy and Caroline Patterson, all the way from Dalkeith, Edinburgh, Scotland.
00:00:57.655 --> 00:00:59.357
Welcome, Andy, Caroline.
00:01:00.289 --> 00:01:01.350
Nicely welcomed.
00:01:01.972 --> 00:01:03.594
It's good to have you here.
00:01:03.615 --> 00:01:24.042
And so when we were talking about this podcast and preparing it, we talked about you coming on the podcast and sharing things that you feel comfortable with, including your experience in the church, you know, when you were coming into the church and what brought you into the church.
00:01:24.683 --> 00:01:29.549
And we talked about you sharing your thoughts and experiences on what life was like in the church.
00:01:30.402 --> 00:01:46.664
And just for our listeners, by the way, I've known Annie and Caroline for quite some time, since 1999, because my family, we moved from Yorkshire, Huddersfield State, to your ward, Dalkeith Ward, in 1999.
00:01:46.924 --> 00:01:50.528
I think Alan Campbell was the bishop at the time.
00:01:50.549 --> 00:01:51.370
Yep.
00:01:51.938 --> 00:01:52.218
I think.
00:01:53.159 --> 00:02:00.284
And, uh, and so we moved there and that's how we got to know Carl and Andy and just a wonderful couple that we just fell in love with.
00:02:00.766 --> 00:02:05.650
So we loved our time in Al-Qaeda and we served together actually, um, in different callings.
00:02:06.250 --> 00:02:07.411
Uh, and that's how I know.
00:02:07.471 --> 00:02:10.554
And my family knows Andy and Caroline over that length of time.
00:02:11.254 --> 00:02:22.745
And so, um, Andy, Caroline, if you, uh, are okay, if you could share with us, uh, your experience about, you know, how you came into the church, uh, even talk about how you met, uh, if you want to, you You came into the church.
00:02:23.645 --> 00:02:26.489
A little bit about your family would be great.
00:02:27.030 --> 00:02:29.431
And then you came to the church.
00:02:29.491 --> 00:02:30.432
You served in the church.
00:02:31.014 --> 00:02:32.276
You had experiences.
00:02:32.316 --> 00:02:33.637
You served different callings, et cetera.
00:02:34.138 --> 00:02:41.705
And then at some point, something happened at some point in time, and then you left the church, if you could talk about that.
00:02:42.247 --> 00:02:48.894
And then talk about what life is like since you left.
00:02:49.186 --> 00:02:52.030
Because if I understand, you've both left the church.
00:02:52.471 --> 00:02:52.891
Yeah, we have.
00:02:53.132 --> 00:03:00.582
And if you could share that experience and share with us what life is like, you know, post leaving the church.
00:03:00.603 --> 00:03:05.289
And then Jim and I, throughout the conversation, will interact with you and may ask you a couple of questions.
00:03:05.950 --> 00:03:09.295
But again, we want you to feel very comfortable with the conversation.
00:03:11.278 --> 00:03:18.248
She was a member of the church long before she met me, so I'll hand over to her first.
00:03:18.368 --> 00:03:23.657
So, I kind of had the whole Joseph Smith thing going on about which church to join.
00:03:24.137 --> 00:03:31.006
My mum had sent me to local Baptist Sunday School because it happened to be in our local primary school and she wanted a couple of hours peace and a fun.
00:03:31.727 --> 00:03:33.810
So I was sent there and I loved it.
00:03:34.450 --> 00:03:36.274
My sister hated that, didn't stick with it.
00:03:36.633 --> 00:03:37.354
I loved it.
00:03:37.514 --> 00:03:38.276
Went all the time.
00:03:38.316 --> 00:03:44.485
They eventually tried as a teenager wanted me to become a teacher for them but by that time I was like I'm not sure about this.
00:03:45.366 --> 00:03:54.391
So had that background and then I really wanted to know, like I say, the Joseph Smith type story of which church was true.
00:03:54.412 --> 00:04:04.288
So I actually had Jehovah's Witnesses teaching me at the same time as going to the Protestant church, Church of Scotland.
00:04:06.032 --> 00:04:08.597
And wasn't quite gelling with that.
00:04:08.676 --> 00:04:10.920
And so I was doing the whole praying, praying, praying.
00:04:11.020 --> 00:04:13.224
Like, I really want to know which church is yours.
00:04:13.425 --> 00:04:14.045
I need to know.
00:04:14.689 --> 00:04:16.913
I just need to know I want to join your church.
00:04:16.932 --> 00:04:18.093
I want to be in the right church.
00:04:18.113 --> 00:04:20.798
Whatever one it was, if it had been the Jehovah's Witnesses, I'd have done.
00:04:21.117 --> 00:04:22.139
That's where I'd have went.
00:04:22.480 --> 00:04:27.867
However, I worked in Edinburgh.
00:04:28.307 --> 00:04:36.437
There was a snow day and I couldn't go because the buses were only running to Edinburgh because we live on the outskirts.
00:04:37.059 --> 00:04:42.086
And I got the opportunity on that snow day to go for an interview in a local shop so I could walk to it.
00:04:42.658 --> 00:04:45.221
and got an interview for a job out of the blue.
00:04:45.261 --> 00:04:51.569
And I got the job there and then and discovered that a member of the church worked here.
00:04:51.608 --> 00:04:53.170
Pam Beveridge, do you remember Pam?
00:04:53.471 --> 00:04:54.653
I know Pam,
00:04:54.872 --> 00:04:55.533
yes.
00:04:56.454 --> 00:04:58.396
So I'm being taught by Jehovah's Witnesses.
00:04:58.437 --> 00:04:59.959
I've got a Church of Scotland background.
00:05:00.160 --> 00:05:01.620
And then all of a sudden I meet Pam.
00:05:01.682 --> 00:05:02.903
I start to ask her questions.
00:05:02.963 --> 00:05:07.569
I was one of these people that people love to meet because I was full of questions.
00:05:07.788 --> 00:05:09.310
Oh, can the missionaries come by?
00:05:09.331 --> 00:05:11.634
And I'm like, yeah, that would be amazing, lovely.
00:05:12.033 --> 00:05:14.937
And so I actually had the missionary lessons in their home.
00:05:14.958 --> 00:05:20.846
I was engaged at the time to another, not Andy, to another guy.
00:05:20.867 --> 00:05:23.009
We were both only 19.
00:05:23.990 --> 00:05:27.255
And I just kind of got right away, this is the one.
00:05:27.276 --> 00:05:27.857
This is the one.
00:05:27.896 --> 00:05:28.838
This is where I should be.
00:05:28.898 --> 00:05:29.939
This is God's church.
00:05:30.139 --> 00:05:34.004
And I'm going to put myself 100% into it.
00:05:34.646 --> 00:05:36.908
Alan, my ex-husband, came along for the ride.
00:05:36.928 --> 00:05:39.031
He did join, but he was never 100% in.
00:05:40.737 --> 00:05:43.384
And I just flourished and I loved it.
00:05:43.463 --> 00:05:52.964
I just loved the church, had the two boys, my two older children, and really went along great for a good few years.
00:05:52.985 --> 00:05:53.867
I was very happy.
00:05:54.649 --> 00:05:57.254
And then my marriage started to go wrong.
00:05:58.517 --> 00:06:00.201
And I...
00:06:01.634 --> 00:06:06.117
I found out a lot of things about my ex-husband and it just went all off the rails.
00:06:06.298 --> 00:06:09.641
And I had to go to the church and tell them what was going on and everything.
00:06:09.721 --> 00:06:21.031
And I actually discovered that one of the members had actually met, they were out for a meal, two of them, him and his wife, and Alan was in the same restaurant for a meal with another woman.
00:06:21.132 --> 00:06:21.952
He didn't tell me.
00:06:23.153 --> 00:06:24.095
I found out later on.
00:06:24.815 --> 00:06:31.062
Anyway, the crux of this was that the church had to interview me and I had to interview Alan.
00:06:31.521 --> 00:06:36.108
And I remember distinctly, you know, the path that used to go down to the building, Ian?
00:06:37.089 --> 00:06:39.012
Passing Alan on the path.
00:06:39.413 --> 00:06:39.954
I'd been in.
00:06:40.074 --> 00:06:41.036
I'd told my story.
00:06:41.096 --> 00:06:42.298
I'd gave them everything I had.
00:06:42.377 --> 00:06:44.922
I knew what I knew about at that point.
00:06:45.302 --> 00:06:49.689
And I just thought the spirit of discernment will be with these men.
00:06:49.728 --> 00:06:52.934
They will know that I'm telling the truth and Alan isn't.
00:06:54.475 --> 00:06:57.661
And I was shocked to my core because they believed everything Alan said.
00:06:58.081 --> 00:06:58.721
Everything he said.
00:06:59.884 --> 00:07:00.024
And...
00:07:01.473 --> 00:07:03.297
We ended up separating and divorcing.
00:07:03.476 --> 00:07:08.363
And I did go to church for a while with the boys after we separated.
00:07:08.624 --> 00:07:12.310
But the church is a family thing, you know.
00:07:12.389 --> 00:07:15.634
And I just felt I didn't fit in anymore.
00:07:15.694 --> 00:07:17.798
The members were being a bit funny with me.
00:07:18.658 --> 00:07:21.742
And so eventually I actually left for five years.
00:07:21.762 --> 00:07:23.084
I was gone for five years.
00:07:23.966 --> 00:07:25.889
Never not losing my testimony.
00:07:26.110 --> 00:07:26.971
Still had my testimony.
00:07:26.990 --> 00:07:29.053
The church just could not deal with it.
00:07:29.569 --> 00:07:32.853
with being there with a broken marriage, a broken temple marriage.
00:07:33.915 --> 00:07:34.937
I just couldn't deal with it.
00:07:35.156 --> 00:07:36.257
So I was off for five years.
00:07:36.517 --> 00:07:38.880
Within those five years, I met Andy.
00:07:40.262 --> 00:07:41.464
And obviously it got serious.
00:07:41.545 --> 00:07:44.048
And I said to him one day, look, I am a Mormon.
00:07:44.788 --> 00:07:45.649
Don't go at the minute.
00:07:46.149 --> 00:07:47.632
In fact, this is who I am.
00:07:47.672 --> 00:07:50.074
And one day I'm probably going back.
00:07:50.815 --> 00:07:52.497
And he was saying, it's fine.
00:07:53.119 --> 00:07:55.701
I didn't face him at all.
00:07:56.583 --> 00:07:59.005
And then we were literally married how long?
00:07:59.458 --> 00:08:00.238
weeks, months.
00:08:00.579 --> 00:08:06.329
Then we got married in the August and it was October.
00:08:06.350 --> 00:08:06.370
I
00:08:06.629 --> 00:08:56.461
think a bishop remember knocked on my door and said you know you're married again everything's you know fine and we want you back and that was all I needed was the invite to come back because what I didn't see is when I was gone for five years nobody bothered about me nobody came near me it was just me and my boys and I just got on with it I made a new life for myself I started karate lessons and you know I made myself a stronger woman through what had happened and then suddenly they found out I'm remarried and they're knocking on my door and I just thought I just took it as well this is the Lord wants me back you know this is the time to go back so we did we went back to church and um They gave me a calling right away as young women's president.
00:08:56.481 --> 00:08:59.445
And I was like, I've been gone for five years.
00:08:59.926 --> 00:09:00.826
This is too much.
00:09:01.006 --> 00:09:05.311
But I literally was invited back with a calling, young women's president.
00:09:06.011 --> 00:09:07.833
So I thought, right, okay, well, I'll do it.
00:09:08.154 --> 00:09:08.495
Did it.
00:09:09.015 --> 00:09:10.918
And then you would come down.
00:09:10.957 --> 00:09:14.442
It was when the three-hour thing was on and sacrament was last.
00:09:14.522 --> 00:09:18.086
So he would walk down from the house to the church for sacrament.
00:09:18.686 --> 00:09:19.967
And he'd sit in sacrament with me.
00:09:21.589 --> 00:09:21.750
And...
00:09:22.370 --> 00:09:24.591
I never put any pressure on him to join.
00:09:24.611 --> 00:09:25.893
I didn't think that was fair.
00:09:25.932 --> 00:09:28.456
It would be completely up to him if that's what he wanted to do.
00:09:28.475 --> 00:09:30.038
I just wasn't going to force it on him.
00:09:30.677 --> 00:09:34.061
And so I never really did any kind of proselyting.
00:09:34.081 --> 00:09:34.621
Have you done that?
00:09:34.822 --> 00:09:35.363
No, never.
00:09:35.863 --> 00:09:40.408
But when he was at church, obviously the missionary spoke to him, the bishop and everybody spoke to him and welcomed him.
00:09:40.447 --> 00:09:40.967
And he loved it.
00:09:41.008 --> 00:09:41.828
And he loved the singing.
00:09:41.869 --> 00:09:44.110
Like I said earlier, he loved to sing the hymns.
00:09:44.591 --> 00:09:46.974
And then one day he said to me, what did you say?
00:09:46.994 --> 00:09:47.073
What
00:09:48.195 --> 00:09:48.655
are you doing?
00:09:49.176 --> 00:09:50.197
On a such and such a day.
00:09:50.216 --> 00:09:52.057
And I said, Why?
00:09:52.178 --> 00:09:52.779
What's going on?
00:09:52.799 --> 00:09:53.761
I said, I'm getting baptized.
00:09:54.221 --> 00:09:56.245
And I was like, oh, no way.
00:09:57.086 --> 00:09:58.089
It just came out of the blue.
00:09:58.289 --> 00:09:58.610
It just...
00:09:59.071 --> 00:10:03.258
I think Paul, my son, who was about eight or nine?
00:10:04.279 --> 00:10:04.379
Eight.
00:10:04.721 --> 00:10:07.745
He gave a talk at one of the sacrament meetings about families.
00:10:07.966 --> 00:10:08.768
Families are forever.
00:10:08.908 --> 00:10:10.009
And it just touched him.
00:10:10.070 --> 00:10:11.533
And he said, yeah, I'm doing this.
00:10:12.134 --> 00:10:14.158
Well, he joined and...
00:10:14.785 --> 00:10:16.187
We got married in the temple.
00:10:16.268 --> 00:10:21.174
I had to go through the whole rigmarole of getting my first temple seal broken, which was no fun.
00:10:21.635 --> 00:10:22.898
But we got there, we did that.
00:10:23.639 --> 00:10:25.280
And then we got sealed in the temple.
00:10:26.283 --> 00:10:28.787
And then life was great.
00:10:28.886 --> 00:10:29.788
We were in the church.
00:10:29.807 --> 00:10:32.511
We had the four kids by then.
00:10:32.532 --> 00:10:33.933
No, we had just two.
00:10:34.554 --> 00:10:36.477
We only had Alan and Paul for a while.
00:10:36.557 --> 00:10:41.966
And then we went through a couple of miscarriages, which was another thing that...
00:10:42.562 --> 00:11:42.443
kind of upset me church wise so I've still got the thing about the spirit discernment wasn't it with the bishop when they spoke to my ex-husband and I got pregnant and I had a miscarriage which was sad but you know it happens however when I got pregnant again I went to my bishop I'm not going to say names Ian but I went to my bishop and I said I really need a blessing I am so worried that the same thing will happen again and eventually I tied him down and he reluctantly but he gave me a blessing and he told me in the blessing that i would hold this child in my arms that was his exact words do not worry and you will hold this child in your arms and about a few two weeks later i lost that baby as well so right away i'm thinking what happened there like what what's going on there why would i be told that and it took me weeks to get that bishop to speak to me he just couldn't even look at me on a sunday Eventually, I tied him down to her.
00:11:42.524 --> 00:11:43.666
I said, I need to speak to you.
00:11:43.725 --> 00:11:44.687
What happened here?
00:11:44.846 --> 00:11:46.909
You told me I'd hold this baby in my arms.
00:11:47.750 --> 00:11:52.697
And his reply, and I think already I'm starting to see how the church can never be wrong.
00:11:53.658 --> 00:11:58.644
But his reply was, you will hold this baby in your arms, but it'll not be in this life, it'll be in the next life.
00:11:58.745 --> 00:12:00.807
And I thought, that's just nonsense.
00:12:01.288 --> 00:12:02.671
That is not what you meant.
00:12:02.811 --> 00:12:17.331
And an actual priesthood holder said to me that he hates when the The elders or the priesthood would cop out with things that they promised them blessings and then it would turn it to suit them, if you like.
00:12:17.972 --> 00:12:19.375
So the church could never be wrong.
00:12:19.995 --> 00:12:21.298
The leaders could never be wrong.
00:12:21.899 --> 00:12:28.409
However, I put it to the back of my mind, put it on the shelf and we just got on with life, didn't we?
00:12:28.429 --> 00:12:32.657
And then we went on to have twins, one of which you met earlier.
00:12:33.437 --> 00:12:35.201
And life was great.
00:12:35.400 --> 00:12:35.761
We just...
00:12:36.225 --> 00:12:37.346
It was super.
00:12:37.547 --> 00:12:41.750
Alan, my oldest boy, he stopped coming to church when he was 16.
00:12:42.491 --> 00:12:45.154
And he kind of backed off from the family, didn't he?
00:12:45.355 --> 00:12:45.754
A little bit.
00:12:46.014 --> 00:12:47.616
And that has been quite a...
00:12:48.197 --> 00:12:49.418
We still talk about it yet.
00:12:49.499 --> 00:12:50.580
He's 47 now.
00:12:50.779 --> 00:12:54.644
He's 43 now.
00:12:54.663 --> 00:13:00.950
And he will still bring up how we had to stay away because he didn't feel good enough to come to visit, to come to the family.
00:13:00.970 --> 00:13:02.191
We were this Mormon family.
00:13:02.230 --> 00:13:05.374
His other brother, who's just two years younger, went.
00:13:06.081 --> 00:13:08.546
Ewan, no, me and Paul loved Ewan.
00:13:09.527 --> 00:13:10.749
He was still quite active.
00:13:11.591 --> 00:13:14.355
And he just felt like he didn't belong to our family.
00:13:14.394 --> 00:13:18.561
So that was a big rift that was caused by us being in the church.
00:13:19.142 --> 00:13:20.945
But it didn't bother us at the time.
00:13:20.985 --> 00:13:22.287
We just kind of got on with it.
00:13:22.528 --> 00:13:23.609
We saw him and we saw him.
00:13:24.350 --> 00:13:25.672
And everything was really quite good.
00:13:25.893 --> 00:13:28.255
Do you want to take over how you feel about it,
00:13:28.277 --> 00:13:28.336
Sam?
00:13:28.356 --> 00:13:28.856
I can do that.
00:13:29.658 --> 00:13:34.265
So my background was that I came from a very non-religious family.
00:13:35.618 --> 00:13:41.606
But my dad had been a member of the Brethren, which is quite a strict sect in Scotland.
00:13:41.966 --> 00:13:42.467
Very strict.
00:13:43.208 --> 00:13:44.510
And he'd really rebelled against that.
00:13:45.312 --> 00:13:48.376
But I'd kind of grown up around religious things.
00:13:48.476 --> 00:13:50.519
I always liked hymns and church singing.
00:13:51.761 --> 00:13:54.765
One of my girlfriend's university, her stepfather was a minister.
00:13:54.806 --> 00:13:58.010
So I used to go down there and church of England thing.
00:13:59.452 --> 00:14:01.034
That's when I met Caroline.
00:14:02.177 --> 00:14:04.681
And we really just gelled really quickly.
00:14:04.701 --> 00:14:05.381
Alan...
00:14:06.337 --> 00:14:07.419
Paul was 12, Paul was 8.
00:14:08.640 --> 00:14:10.224
And I was enjoying it.
00:14:10.364 --> 00:14:14.509
Like you said, she'd already told me, warned me that she was a Mormon and wanted to go back at some point.
00:14:14.549 --> 00:14:15.211
It didn't bother me.
00:14:15.912 --> 00:14:19.236
I didn't see myself ever joining a church, but it didn't bother me.
00:14:19.738 --> 00:14:24.224
I'd go down, and like Helen has already said, I enjoyed the social side of it.
00:14:24.283 --> 00:14:25.625
I enjoyed the singing.
00:14:26.486 --> 00:14:28.490
Some of the speakers were very good as well.
00:14:29.451 --> 00:14:33.116
And then Paul gave this talk about families, which kind of just rang a chord with me.
00:14:33.136 --> 00:14:33.758
So I started singing.
00:14:33.985 --> 00:14:39.292
asking the missionaries a few more questions to get the lessons officially without Caroline knowing about it.
00:14:40.472 --> 00:14:41.715
And it all seemed to make sense to me.
00:14:43.235 --> 00:14:48.442
The whole thing about how if God spoke to man in past tense, why wouldn't he do it now?
00:14:49.023 --> 00:14:50.083
Why wouldn't he have a living prophet?
00:14:50.104 --> 00:14:51.065
That really made sense to me.
00:14:51.105 --> 00:14:53.567
I thought, okay, this all makes sense.
00:14:54.589 --> 00:14:57.511
And I did get those feelings, you know, the feelings he told you you're going to get in your heart.
00:14:57.972 --> 00:15:00.696
I had some really nice feelings at that time.
00:15:01.356 --> 00:15:02.398
So I got baptised.
00:15:02.977 --> 00:15:05.020
And next week, I was called as ward clerk.
00:15:05.982 --> 00:15:09.749
But I think throughout my time in church, I was never without at least one calling.
00:15:10.830 --> 00:15:12.293
I was ward clerk.
00:15:12.312 --> 00:15:13.234
I was on the bishopric.
00:15:14.095 --> 00:15:15.717
I was on young men's presidency.
00:15:15.817 --> 00:15:18.802
I was on stake, young men's presidency.
00:15:20.465 --> 00:15:22.849
But I had a lot of callings, had a lot of good experiences.
00:15:23.570 --> 00:15:25.153
And some not so good.
00:15:25.173 --> 00:15:30.581
I guess that's where you realize that people are people, men are men, and are going to make mistakes.
00:15:30.780 --> 00:15:36.259
And I especially kind of found that at stake level for stake disciplinary hearings.
00:15:37.221 --> 00:15:41.445
A few things went on there that really were quite an eye-opener for me at the time.
00:15:42.527 --> 00:15:46.551
I kind of passed it off as, okay, yeah, men are going to make mistakes.
00:15:46.630 --> 00:15:50.716
God can't guide absolutely everything, but we still have this church structure.
00:15:51.236 --> 00:15:53.158
We still have the priesthood authority restored.
00:15:53.178 --> 00:15:54.440
We still have a living prophet.
00:15:55.100 --> 00:15:57.464
And that was all really made sense to me.
00:15:57.624 --> 00:15:59.105
I mostly enjoyed my time in church.
00:16:01.090 --> 00:16:02.951
I've
00:16:03.211 --> 00:16:05.475
been trying to think about what if there was a
00:16:06.456 --> 00:16:06.556
one
00:16:07.297 --> 00:16:27.311
point one moment I actually can't think of a one moment thing I just started to think about there was a lot of things bothering me tithing was a big thing that bothered me even before I knew I mean I've only recently found out how much the church has so it was nothing to do with that kind of it's just That was one thing.
00:16:27.370 --> 00:16:28.993
Polygamy was another thing that bothered me.
00:16:29.133 --> 00:16:31.755
Blacks in the priesthood really bothered me.
00:16:32.535 --> 00:16:34.317
And I just started to have these questions.
00:16:34.457 --> 00:16:41.566
And then a friend, that I think you know as well, Ian, she told us about this site that we could join.
00:16:42.226 --> 00:16:46.772
It's now called the Waters of Mormon, but it wasn't at that point.
00:16:46.871 --> 00:16:48.232
And so I joined.
00:16:48.274 --> 00:16:48.514
Did you
00:16:48.614 --> 00:16:49.114
join?
00:16:49.153 --> 00:16:49.634
No, not at the time.
00:16:49.975 --> 00:16:50.615
I joined it.
00:16:51.517 --> 00:16:54.320
And the whole thing for this...
00:16:54.519 --> 00:16:55.100
Right.
00:16:55.561 --> 00:16:55.902
Sorry?
00:16:56.418 --> 00:16:57.960
That's a Facebook group, right?
00:16:58.301 --> 00:16:58.600
Yes.
00:16:58.740 --> 00:17:04.490
And their whole crux is to try and help people who want to stay in, but they have a lot of questions.
00:17:05.151 --> 00:17:09.156
And technically, I shouldn't be in it anymore because I don't want to stay in.
00:17:09.196 --> 00:17:12.842
But I do still like hearing about things and what's going on in the church.
00:17:13.143 --> 00:17:16.647
But actually, it was worse for me.
00:17:17.409 --> 00:17:20.753
Actually, being on that group made me see a lot of things.
00:17:20.993 --> 00:17:26.221
I actually honestly know more about the church now than I did when I was an active member.
00:17:27.074 --> 00:17:27.674
through this group.
00:17:28.435 --> 00:17:35.987
And some of the things I found out, instead of making me feel better, just pushed me even further away.
00:17:36.007 --> 00:17:39.432
And of course, then the CES letter comes up and you think, well, what's that?
00:17:40.173 --> 00:17:41.335
So I have a read at that.
00:17:41.375 --> 00:17:42.155
Not the whole thing.
00:17:42.336 --> 00:17:42.856
It's too long.
00:17:42.896 --> 00:17:47.002
But, you know, the kind of basic points that most people kind of know about it.
00:17:47.403 --> 00:17:49.467
And that just gave me more questions.
00:17:49.747 --> 00:17:50.929
More questions and more questions.
00:17:51.470 --> 00:17:57.906
I went to our state president and I asked him, I asked for a meeting and I asked him some of these questions.
00:17:57.967 --> 00:18:00.090
And I remember the one on tithing.
00:18:01.073 --> 00:18:05.441
And I did say to him, I knew the church had a lot of money, didn't you know how much?
00:18:05.902 --> 00:18:09.288
I says, you know, why is the church asking for tithing?
00:18:09.367 --> 00:18:09.709
Who was it?
00:18:09.749 --> 00:18:12.694
Was it Joseph S.
00:18:12.714 --> 00:18:17.242
Smith that had said that there would come a time when the church would no longer require a tithe?
00:18:17.262 --> 00:18:18.665
I think it was him.
00:18:19.650 --> 00:18:21.071
publish my names, but I'm thinking of his son.
00:18:21.432 --> 00:18:22.134
Anyway, a
00:18:22.233 --> 00:18:22.574
prophet.
00:18:22.615 --> 00:18:23.556
That's Dr.
00:18:23.635 --> 00:18:24.096
F Smith.
00:18:24.237 --> 00:18:24.958
That's exactly right.
00:18:25.259 --> 00:18:25.679
It is him.
00:18:26.299 --> 00:18:27.923
And I said this to him,
00:18:29.104 --> 00:18:29.244
and I
00:18:29.565 --> 00:18:35.914
said, because we were not well off, and I gave the church a lot of money and struggled because of it.
00:18:36.395 --> 00:18:39.500
And I said, I need to know, why is the church needing so much money?
00:18:39.621 --> 00:18:40.882
Why is this prophesied?
00:18:41.182 --> 00:18:44.228
And this was another thing that bothered us, which we'll go into later.
00:18:44.888 --> 00:18:47.414
Why is this not Why has it never happened?
00:18:47.596 --> 00:18:48.737
Why do you still need so much money?
00:18:48.836 --> 00:18:59.449
And I'll never forget his response was, it's been prophesied that the American government will collapse one day and the church will need that money to step in.
00:19:00.289 --> 00:19:04.755
That's what he told me.
00:19:05.234 --> 00:19:06.016
That was his word.
00:19:06.336 --> 00:19:07.156
Is that something new?
00:19:07.778 --> 00:19:11.041
I actually did find something that Brigham Young had said.
00:19:11.554 --> 00:19:20.664
that his words were that they would come to him with an American constitution, as the word he used, would fail and that they would have to step, the elders of the church would have to step up.
00:19:22.047 --> 00:19:26.251
So that's the only thing I could find that would maybe be where the state president got this one.
00:19:26.271 --> 00:19:27.653
But that just sickened me.
00:19:27.713 --> 00:19:29.155
I'm like, whoa, wait a minute.
00:19:29.215 --> 00:19:36.163
You're asking me, who doesn't have a lot at that time, to pay money so that the American government can be built?
00:19:36.223 --> 00:19:40.809
For every question I asked, things just...
00:19:41.250 --> 00:19:44.032
There was more and more coming to me that I was asking more about.
00:19:44.252 --> 00:19:46.516
It just confused matters even more.
00:19:46.955 --> 00:19:50.039
The answers were not good from my point of view.
00:19:50.180 --> 00:20:02.294
One of the other things that I just touched on a minute ago is about, and this is one of the things that you really struggled with, is how past prophets prophesize and are thrown aside by new prophets.
00:20:03.075 --> 00:20:04.675
That makes no sense to me.
00:20:05.037 --> 00:20:08.160
If the Lord willed it then, why has it changed now?
00:20:08.421 --> 00:20:15.311
But for me, I could still reason that away because things do change and maybe the Lord was shaping a path.
00:20:16.932 --> 00:20:21.298
I still didn't find anything completely black and white that would chase me away from the church.
00:20:22.058 --> 00:20:24.441
There's lots of small niggling things like Carolyn had explained.
00:20:24.500 --> 00:20:26.042
We struggled financially.
00:20:26.103 --> 00:20:32.829
Some of the people in the Lord were not the best example of church people, shall we say.
00:20:32.869 --> 00:20:36.053
And you struggle with the fact that they're called of God.
00:20:36.073 --> 00:20:38.047
And then you think, well, They have something to learn.
00:20:38.327 --> 00:20:39.650
There's always a way of justifying it.
00:20:39.690 --> 00:20:42.153
They have something to learn or I have something to learn.
00:20:42.513 --> 00:20:45.679
Maybe I need to learn patience or humility or how to work with somebody.
00:20:45.798 --> 00:20:49.183
But there's lots of little things just kind of niggling away.
00:20:49.203 --> 00:20:54.711
And then we went to a friend's house and we met Jonathan.
00:20:54.751 --> 00:21:03.025
Yeah, so my daughter-in-law's mum, who was in an Edinburgh ward, she was always one for having the missionaries for dinner.
00:21:03.065 --> 00:22:05.736
00:22:05.756 --> 00:22:08.220
He would have been about 17 at the time.
00:22:08.641 --> 00:22:09.461
Planning a mission.
00:22:09.643 --> 00:22:11.025
Very into the church.
00:22:11.125 --> 00:22:12.487
Probably the four-year kid.
00:22:13.188 --> 00:22:14.471
He was the most into it.
00:22:15.291 --> 00:22:18.156
He actually kept going with Andy after I stopped going.
00:22:18.897 --> 00:22:22.984
And he got really upset when he was listening to this guy.
00:22:23.045 --> 00:22:24.446
When we were telling him what he had told us.
00:22:24.507 --> 00:22:28.133
And he sat out here on our steps in our hallway, on our staircase.
00:22:28.594 --> 00:22:28.993
Sobbing.
00:22:29.154 --> 00:22:30.036
Crying his heart out.
00:22:30.576 --> 00:22:30.958
Because...
00:22:31.586 --> 00:22:33.407
It's just not, he's telling lies.
00:22:33.468 --> 00:22:34.249
That's not the church.
00:22:34.288 --> 00:22:39.675
You know, he just got so upset because his church that he loved so much, he was prepared to go and serve for two years.
00:22:40.317 --> 00:22:42.058
We were telling him things he didn't want to hear.
00:22:42.920 --> 00:22:45.042
And he took quite a while to come around, didn't he?
00:22:45.163 --> 00:22:45.462
He did, yeah.
00:22:45.482 --> 00:22:45.884
He just...
00:22:46.924 --> 00:22:53.613
And so if Callan had left the church because of these questions, I was still going with Blair, still struggling along.
00:22:54.713 --> 00:23:05.299
What really kind of finished me off was when I can't remember if it was one of the bishops or a state president or one of the conference talks that said that a prophet's not always a prophet.
00:23:05.680 --> 00:23:13.049
You have to decide for yourself when he's prophesying on behalf of the Lord or when he's just speaking as a man.
00:23:14.051 --> 00:23:19.199
And for me, the whole foundation of the church wasn't Joseph Smith as such, but the fact that it was a living prophet.
00:23:19.900 --> 00:23:20.601
Because that made sense.
00:23:20.641 --> 00:23:27.230
I mean, if it wasn't a living prophet guiding the church in modern times, then it was just another church led by men.
00:23:27.970 --> 00:23:31.454
and all these other things that kind of had niggled in the background.
00:23:32.757 --> 00:23:40.086
From that point on, I didn't want to be bothered overcoming those if the foundation of the church, in my eyes anyway, wasn't there anymore.
00:23:40.567 --> 00:23:51.163
I only really went for the church because the structure of the church, having a prophet guiding it and speaking to God and giving us this continuing revelation, that's what really sold it for me.
00:23:52.084 --> 00:23:54.823
And when somebody told me, well, It isn't, it isn't.
00:23:54.923 --> 00:23:56.465
You can pick and choose.
00:23:56.486 --> 00:23:59.569
You have to decide for yourself, but don't question the prophet.
00:24:00.632 --> 00:24:01.773
You
00:24:01.814 --> 00:24:03.557
have to question him, but don't question him.
00:24:03.757 --> 00:24:05.700
Follow the prophet, but don't always follow the prophet.
00:24:05.740 --> 00:24:06.580
And I just thought, well...
00:24:06.661 --> 00:24:07.362
It was confusing.
00:24:07.762 --> 00:24:07.923
Yeah.
00:24:08.423 --> 00:24:11.087
And for me, that was the final straw when we left, which was...
00:24:13.171 --> 00:24:13.451
Five
00:24:13.551 --> 00:24:14.272
or six years?
00:24:14.834 --> 00:24:18.298
Officially, probably about six years plus we'd not been going to church.
00:24:18.619 --> 00:24:25.582
And I remember Blair coming to us one day, maybe about a year later, He couldn't go to church because we physically weren't taking him.
00:24:25.622 --> 00:24:27.605
He lived too far away and he wasn't driving at the time.
00:24:28.887 --> 00:24:36.019
And he came to us one day and he played rugby for his local rugby team.
00:24:36.901 --> 00:24:43.330
And anything about rugby culture, there's a lot of meeting in the pub and whatever afterwards.
00:24:43.412 --> 00:25:23.027
00:25:25.049 --> 00:25:40.051
Originally, when he'd heard these things, he'd just, no, not having that, the church is true, and he was gradually coming round to things, and that's when he said, I just want to be a normal person, a normal teenager, and I said, well, go and be who you
00:25:41.114 --> 00:25:41.334
are.
00:25:41.354 --> 00:25:45.963
That brings us to the end of the active part of our church story anyway.
00:25:50.731 --> 00:25:54.057
You're both still on the records of the church.
00:25:54.096 --> 00:25:55.479
Yes.
00:25:57.521 --> 00:26:01.448
I'm not sure if I find it necessary.
00:26:01.867 --> 00:26:02.368
I don't know.
00:26:02.409 --> 00:26:06.434
In Scotland, it's easy to walk away.
00:26:06.454 --> 00:26:09.900
We're not in a Mormon community.
00:26:10.101 --> 00:26:16.340
I hear stories on that Facebook site where People do not believe anymore.
00:26:16.361 --> 00:26:23.413
100% do not believe, but still go because they have to keep up appearances because their jobs are wrapped up in it, their marriages are wrapped up in it.
00:26:23.993 --> 00:26:31.566
You know, it seems like a completely different kind of life, but actually frightens me how people have to stick with it.
00:26:32.528 --> 00:26:33.609
Here, that's not the case.
00:26:34.171 --> 00:26:35.172
Nothing really changes.
00:26:35.452 --> 00:26:40.761
And we were told, I don't know if it's true or not, we were told that to get our names taken off the membership records, you had to...
00:26:41.377 --> 00:26:42.839
applied to the first presidency.
00:26:43.060 --> 00:26:45.443
You had to go and speak to your bishop or whoever it was.
00:26:45.564 --> 00:26:48.990
And as Carolyn says, it didn't really seem necessary.
00:26:49.049 --> 00:26:56.761
If the church wants us to include us in their membership numbers, to look good or whatever, it doesn't really affect us as such, but we are still on the records.
00:26:57.962 --> 00:27:12.801
You know, when you were, I just want to say before I ask this question for our listeners, that I've had the privilege of serving with you both in different callings, different capacities, as Debbie has, my family.
00:27:12.842 --> 00:27:18.511
And Jamie, it's hard to find two more dedicated, devoted individuals, frankly.
00:27:19.133 --> 00:27:30.573
Caroline and Andy, from my experience, were absolutely committed, devoted, spiritually, emotionally, physically, with all the time.
00:27:30.593 --> 00:27:30.613
I
00:27:31.994 --> 00:27:34.479
think, Ian, that that is part of the problem for me.
00:27:35.160 --> 00:27:45.791
Because I am a black and white person I'm 100% in or I'm 100% out and I cannot sit on the fence with one foot in one foot out that's not being true to anything or anybody
00:27:46.452 --> 00:27:59.019
and you describe me that's exactly how I am right whereas Debbie is very different to me right I'm in completely and when I mean I am in right like you guys were.
00:27:59.339 --> 00:28:01.461
And when I'm out, I'm done, right?
00:28:02.782 --> 00:28:06.627
And so, Jim, Callan and Andy were just incredibly faithful and devoted.
00:28:07.228 --> 00:28:10.211
Callan, I think you were Lucy's Nike president at one point.
00:28:11.752 --> 00:28:11.772
I
00:28:12.173 --> 00:28:13.615
don't think I've ever been president.
00:28:13.796 --> 00:28:15.518
I certainly was in the...
00:28:15.758 --> 00:28:18.361
But my favourite, Pauline, my favourite...
00:28:18.941 --> 00:28:19.741
Sandy's a good teacher.
00:28:19.882 --> 00:28:20.762
Sandy's a good teacher.
00:28:21.203 --> 00:28:22.025
Yeah, Jim...
00:28:23.425 --> 00:28:27.219
Caroline was the most amazing teacher in the ward.
00:28:27.840 --> 00:28:29.306
You were the finest teacher.
00:28:29.425 --> 00:28:30.990
And then you and I served together, Andy.
00:28:31.291 --> 00:28:36.670
And, you know, and so that was just wonderful to see.
00:28:36.769 --> 00:28:37.550
to work with you.
00:28:37.590 --> 00:28:39.614
And we got a lot.
00:28:39.653 --> 00:28:41.356
I mean, it was very rewarding spiritually.
00:28:41.798 --> 00:28:45.103
You mentioned earlier, Andy, that you got a new as well, Caroline.
00:28:45.182 --> 00:28:47.026
I mean, you were in, you got a lot from it.
00:28:47.226 --> 00:28:49.489
It was fulfilling spiritually.
00:28:49.568 --> 00:28:55.018
You come back and you feel filled spiritually, notwithstanding some of the challenges.
00:28:55.618 --> 00:29:04.556
You know, when you were so in, when you were discovering all these issues and the problems and asking questions, I've got two questions.
00:29:04.696 --> 00:29:05.657
What was the reaction?
00:29:05.678 --> 00:29:08.061
Did you try talking to other members in the ward?
00:29:08.383 --> 00:29:09.284
And what was their reaction?
00:29:09.825 --> 00:29:15.114
And then what has been the reaction of the member friends in the ward since
00:29:15.734 --> 00:29:16.517
you've left?
00:29:16.636 --> 00:29:21.746
She spoke to people because she was closer to, I guess, well, in my experience, women are closer
00:29:21.766 --> 00:29:22.527
to each
00:29:22.547 --> 00:29:23.888
other than men are anyway.
00:29:24.450 --> 00:29:30.880
And she had lots of women's nights out with current members and also people that were no longer members.
00:29:31.240 --> 00:29:34.405
She would go out on nights out or weekends away with women like that.
00:29:34.445 --> 00:29:36.250
So she probably had discussions much more than I did.
00:29:36.830 --> 00:29:37.392
Right.
00:29:37.412 --> 00:29:37.692
Yeah.
00:29:39.876 --> 00:29:45.006
So I didn't discuss it with a lot of people, but there was a couple of people I did discuss it.
00:29:45.046 --> 00:29:46.808
I don't want to say names.
00:29:47.349 --> 00:29:52.219
But my best friend in the church, we still have close relationships with two families.
00:29:53.582 --> 00:29:53.662
Yeah.
00:29:54.114 --> 00:29:55.115
And we get on really well.
00:29:55.134 --> 00:29:56.896
We still go and see each other and things.
00:29:56.936 --> 00:29:59.298
And we kind of come to the thing off.
00:29:59.338 --> 00:30:00.800
We just don't discuss the church.
00:30:01.681 --> 00:30:02.742
But I did originally.
00:30:02.923 --> 00:30:04.304
And I can remember sitting.
00:30:04.544 --> 00:30:06.105
She brought me home from something one night.
00:30:06.787 --> 00:30:08.428
And we were sitting out in my driveway.
00:30:09.169 --> 00:30:12.932
And in the car for probably over an hour.
00:30:13.133 --> 00:30:14.794
Just talking about different things.
00:30:15.454 --> 00:30:17.317
And I was telling her the things I'd found out.
00:30:17.457 --> 00:30:18.157
And the problems.
00:30:18.337 --> 00:30:20.380
And why I wasn't coming back to church.
00:30:20.440 --> 00:30:22.461
Because I'm neither in or out.
00:30:22.594 --> 00:30:54.558
and I was telling her these things and her reply was interesting she said to me I know there's problems in the church I don't want to know them and I thought okay because I think for a lot of people they've given so much to admit that they were wrong that somehow they've got this whole thing wrong it's too much for them so they just want to keep going and ignorance And she did not want me to tell her, like, I know, I know things aren't right.
00:30:54.638 --> 00:30:55.800
I know there's a lot of problems.
00:30:55.901 --> 00:30:57.282
I just don't want to know them.
00:30:58.003 --> 00:31:01.469
So that's really it.
00:31:01.509 --> 00:31:03.411
That's probably the person I spoke most to.
00:31:03.431 --> 00:31:04.393
And she's still active.
00:31:05.653 --> 00:31:09.298
I'm not sure she's particularly happy, but she's still active, her family.
00:31:10.240 --> 00:31:10.661
And
00:31:11.162 --> 00:31:12.923
maybe it's because we're not active in the church.
00:31:13.905 --> 00:31:18.219
And other than these two families, the church is really just, left us alone.
00:31:19.200 --> 00:31:19.500
Nobody's
00:31:19.780 --> 00:31:20.602
tried to bring us back.
00:31:20.622 --> 00:31:23.685
Nobody has ever knocked on the door to try
00:31:23.705 --> 00:31:24.246
and do that.
00:31:24.266 --> 00:31:32.596
We don't know of anybody personally that's still active in the church that doesn't have some doubts, if not a lot of doubts, but is still going to church.
00:31:33.979 --> 00:31:40.066
I don't think we could name somebody that's 100% in the church and is really happy about it and doesn't have any questions.
00:31:40.866 --> 00:31:44.551
Because I'm a red, black and white person, I do get kind of annoyed.
00:31:44.731 --> 00:31:50.095
We know somebody who You know, I would say, oh, don't worry about that.
00:31:50.134 --> 00:31:50.955
There are, what's it called?
00:31:51.236 --> 00:31:54.160
A cafeteria Mormon, I think they give it that name.
00:31:54.300 --> 00:31:55.001
The pick and choose.
00:31:55.623 --> 00:31:56.884
I could never do that.
00:31:57.525 --> 00:31:58.026
I could never.
00:31:58.066 --> 00:32:01.109
The church taught me it's either all true.
00:32:01.310 --> 00:32:02.772
This was the words of an actual prophet.
00:32:02.813 --> 00:32:04.194
I'm not going to try and remember which one.
00:32:05.016 --> 00:32:05.477
Gordon B.
00:32:05.497 --> 00:32:05.836
Hinckley.
00:32:06.198 --> 00:32:06.478
Gordon B.
00:32:06.518 --> 00:32:07.298
Hinckley, thank you.
00:32:07.338 --> 00:32:10.443
He said, it's either all true or it's all not.
00:32:10.844 --> 00:32:11.585
It's all lies.
00:32:13.428 --> 00:32:14.750
That's what the church taught.
00:32:15.746 --> 00:32:16.125
They didn't.
00:32:16.247 --> 00:32:18.628
And to me, there's no room for nuance.
00:32:19.349 --> 00:32:20.991
You know, either it's right or it's wrong.
00:32:21.492 --> 00:32:34.127
And the minute I discovered things about Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, the things that went on, the major mascot, I could go on and on and on about all the things I've discovered that I never knew before.
00:32:35.108 --> 00:32:39.394
I think probably the worst one for me was finding out how many different versions of the First Vision there was.
00:32:40.673 --> 00:32:43.737
And how many years it was before Joseph actually told this story.
00:32:44.017 --> 00:32:46.740
That's not what the missionaries teach us when they knock on the doors.
00:32:47.441 --> 00:32:50.544
And I've been deceived for years.
00:32:51.064 --> 00:32:52.986
I cannot be a part of this anymore.
00:32:53.446 --> 00:32:55.548
But like you say, Ian, there is a lot of good.
00:32:55.909 --> 00:32:57.309
We loved our time in the church.
00:32:58.250 --> 00:33:01.535
Until those doubts came, we were more than happy doing what we were doing.
00:33:02.194 --> 00:33:14.828
The kids, like Alan, who's the oldest one who walked away first, will still say to us to this day, that the things he was taught as a child, the morals and the standards, still stick with him.
00:33:15.048 --> 00:33:16.631
And he's got no problem with that.
00:33:18.554 --> 00:33:20.016
So yeah, the church does a lot of good.
00:33:20.155 --> 00:33:30.749
And our kids had a lot, the twins in particular, had a lovely life with all their friends in the church, which I think you could count one hand amount of them that are still active amongst their friends.
00:33:31.230 --> 00:33:37.597
Because we had a state resident who at the time our kids were young men, young women, was brilliant with the youth.
00:33:38.210 --> 00:33:39.972
He organised so many things for them.
00:33:40.393 --> 00:33:44.799
We used to have them because we're a big stake, unlike the ones in America.
00:33:44.819 --> 00:33:50.087
I don't know what Canada's like, but you know, Ian, we're a big stake geographically.
00:33:50.689 --> 00:33:52.671
So we would have all the kids come and stay at our house.
00:33:52.711 --> 00:33:58.339
I mean, I was climbing over sleeping bags with, you know, teenagers everywhere in our house.
00:33:58.660 --> 00:34:04.970
We wanted the kids to have a good friendship experience because we thought that's what will keep them in the church.
00:34:05.506 --> 00:34:08.369
As if they have good friends, which is what Alan and Paul never had.
00:34:09.110 --> 00:34:11.432
Because back in their day, it was dismal.
00:34:12.014 --> 00:34:14.277
The youth programme was terrible.
00:34:14.898 --> 00:34:16.920
Taylor and Blair had a completely different experience.
00:34:17.000 --> 00:34:19.523
It was a really good youth experience for them.
00:34:21.867 --> 00:34:25.992
So, yeah, we did our best to try and keep everybody active and running along.
00:34:26.012 --> 00:34:29.076
But as soon as these doubts came, like I say, I'm in or I'm out.
00:34:29.777 --> 00:34:30.717
And I could not...
00:34:32.065 --> 00:34:34.068
I could not justify anybody.
00:34:34.088 --> 00:34:35.389
You know, what's it they call it?
00:34:36.570 --> 00:34:37.030
What's the word?
00:34:37.632 --> 00:34:38.351
Can they try to...
00:34:39.273 --> 00:34:39.592
You answer.
00:34:39.954 --> 00:34:41.255
No, I was thinking another word.
00:34:41.275 --> 00:34:41.795
It will come to me.
00:34:42.195 --> 00:34:44.057
You know, when you're trying to balance things and...
00:34:46.019 --> 00:34:46.619
Reconcile.
00:34:47.141 --> 00:34:53.987
Yeah, just trying to, you know, trying to think, well, that might have happened, but let's just ignore it because I love the church.
00:34:54.108 --> 00:34:55.168
And I dug over the church.
00:34:55.608 --> 00:34:55.849
I did.
00:34:55.869 --> 00:34:56.510
I really did.
00:34:57.731 --> 00:34:58.351
But I couldn't.
00:34:58.492 --> 00:34:59.172
I just couldn't.
00:34:59.213 --> 00:34:59.853
I thought, no...
00:35:00.385 --> 00:35:07.088
off it told me it's either all right or it's all wrong and I'm telling you the things I found out it's wrong
00:35:07.108 --> 00:35:11.014
I think your second question was what's life like Yeah, if
00:35:11.355 --> 00:35:13.577
you can ask that question.
00:35:13.637 --> 00:35:14.938
And then I want to bring Jim in.
00:35:14.978 --> 00:35:18.762
I'd like to hear Jim's thoughts on your story.
00:35:18.782 --> 00:35:22.865
Because, Jim, you've heard similar stories for quite some, you know, in your life.
00:35:23.226 --> 00:35:26.369
So, yeah, what's life like now post, you know, church?
00:35:26.530 --> 00:35:32.054
And then, Jim, it'd be good to get your thoughts on what you think about Caroline and his story.
00:35:32.394 --> 00:35:33.777
Mine first and then Caroline's.
00:35:33.856 --> 00:35:37.239
So, for me, life outside the church, it's fine.
00:35:38.221 --> 00:35:38.460
I don't...
00:35:38.782 --> 00:35:39.081
I miss...
00:35:39.554 --> 00:35:40.835
The social side of it, like I said.
00:35:40.855 --> 00:35:42.197
I miss friends.
00:35:42.257 --> 00:35:42.936
I miss the singing.
00:35:42.956 --> 00:35:44.219
I miss the gatherings.
00:35:44.938 --> 00:35:49.804
And I do miss having those kind of what I felt were spiritual moments at the time.
00:35:50.625 --> 00:35:53.347
Other than that, I don't beat myself up for it.
00:35:53.588 --> 00:35:58.172
I don't go seeking out anti-Mormon things or pro-Mormon things.
00:35:58.431 --> 00:36:00.855
If I hear things or somebody sends me a link, I'll read it.
00:36:01.695 --> 00:36:07.161
But for me, it's something that I was into for a while and I'm not now.
00:36:07.280 --> 00:36:08.342
It doesn't affect me.
00:36:08.865 --> 00:36:10.407
Caroline's got a very different
00:36:10.608 --> 00:37:12.059
outlook I am more upset I am more upset about being deceived you know that bothers me however I can say this hand on heart I am 100% happier outside the church than I ever was in it partly because of my personality because I am a if I'm not being 100% faithful or doing everything 100% if I'm not saying my scriptures every day if I'm not say my prayers but every day I would whip myself on the back that's the type of person I am I probably try to be too perfect which is like nobody can be perfect but you're taught to actually try to be as perfect as possible and I did beat myself up if I wasn't getting things right or if I felt I was falling short and I don't have that now I think the words I used to somebody was I feel like a grown up now I can make my own decisions If I want to have a glass of wine with my dinner, I'll have a glass of wine with my dinner.
00:37:12.539 --> 00:37:19.550
I do not need somebody else telling me now how to behave, what to eat, what to drink, what to wear.
00:37:19.650 --> 00:37:28.240
As a woman, garments were just, you know, I feel that the pressure is off me.
00:37:28.581 --> 00:37:29.722
I can just be who I am.
00:37:29.983 --> 00:37:37.414
On the five years where I was inactive, because I still had a testimony, it wasn't like that then.
00:37:38.114 --> 00:37:39.315
that we're still in the back of my head.
00:37:39.576 --> 00:37:40.376
You're doing things wrong.
00:37:40.458 --> 00:37:41.398
You should be church.
00:37:41.418 --> 00:37:43.641
You should do da-da-da-da-da.
00:37:43.661 --> 00:37:55.820
But now that I know all the things I know and I'm 100% happy in myself that I've come to the right decision about these things that I know, I have no guilt.
00:37:56.481 --> 00:37:57.003
There's no guilt.
00:37:57.262 --> 00:37:58.043
I can still be me.
00:37:58.105 --> 00:37:59.266
I can still be a good person.
00:37:59.306 --> 00:38:00.527
I can still be a nice person.
00:38:01.268 --> 00:38:05.856
I just don't have that guilt of having to be perfect
00:38:06.317 --> 00:38:06.878
all the time.
00:38:07.041 --> 00:38:22.222
There's another interesting difference in the two of us that for someone from a size background and a non-church background, I still believe that there is something, someone, some kind of being, a god, gods, whatever.
00:38:22.262 --> 00:38:28.090
And I don't know where or how to find that, but I still feel there is a spiritual side to people.
00:38:28.429 --> 00:38:28.771
And that's...
00:38:28.951 --> 00:38:29.751
And Caroline...
00:38:30.193 --> 00:38:33.938
Yeah, it's actually one of the things that I'm angry at the church about.
00:38:34.690 --> 00:38:37.414
is that it's robbed me of my belief in God.
00:38:38.396 --> 00:38:44.447
Because I always had it, like I say, for a child, for a tiny child getting sent to the Baptist Sunday School when I was about five.
00:38:45.628 --> 00:38:47.532
I just always believed in a God.
00:38:47.632 --> 00:39:00.273
I remember, so the lessons on the Sunday, the Baptist was in our local primary school, but once a year we'd all go, we'd all walk down to the actual church building that was in Dalkey for a presentation, you know.
00:39:00.610 --> 00:39:06.197
we'd get something really lovely because you had perfect attendance or whatever, the kind of things they do in that church.
00:39:06.699 --> 00:39:10.244
And my granddad came with my mum to one of these presentations.
00:39:10.864 --> 00:39:18.795
And my mum told me later, my granddad kind of nudged her in the arm and he went, she takes us really seriously, doesn't she?
00:39:18.835 --> 00:39:19.577
Like as a child.
00:39:19.996 --> 00:39:24.623
So even they could see that I was a firm believer in a God.
00:39:24.943 --> 00:39:30.054
Now I just think, I prayed so hard for you to tell me which church was true.
00:39:30.175 --> 00:39:33.800
This is where I thought you sent me and it's not true.
00:39:33.820 --> 00:39:36.103
So are you even there now?
00:39:37.324 --> 00:39:38.726
It has robbed me of my belief.
00:39:38.827 --> 00:39:40.047
I wouldn't say I'm atheist.
00:39:40.989 --> 00:39:43.393
I'm certainly not sure anymore.
00:39:43.592 --> 00:39:48.380
And that makes me angry because I always had a belief in God for as long as I can remember.
00:39:48.420 --> 00:39:50.481
And it's been taken from me.
00:39:51.523 --> 00:39:52.324
It just makes me sad.
00:39:55.809 --> 00:39:56.030
Jim?
00:39:57.442 --> 00:40:06.251
Well, listening to your story and listening to your experiences, I feel a number of connections with you.
00:40:06.411 --> 00:40:09.054
One of them being the fact that you have twins.
00:40:11.175 --> 00:40:14.800
We have identical twin boys who are both a BYU at the moment.
00:40:15.460 --> 00:40:23.708
They're 23 years old and anybody that can survive raising twins automatically has my respect.
00:40:25.442 --> 00:40:27.927
You also mentioned the CES letter.
00:40:27.947 --> 00:40:28.027
Yeah.
00:40:30.092 --> 00:40:40.574
And so I sort of came to prominence in this kind of podcasting space because I wrote a line-by-line response to the CES letter.
00:40:41.677 --> 00:40:41.757
Okay.
00:40:41.777 --> 00:40:45.585
And I eventually ended up meeting Jeremy Runnels.
00:40:45.605 --> 00:40:45.885
Jeremy Runnels.
00:40:46.402 --> 00:40:51.128
who wrote the CES letter, and I consider him a friend at this point.
00:40:51.228 --> 00:40:56.735
We had a really lovely lunch together, and we've seen each other a number of times since.
00:40:58.476 --> 00:41:11.853
But his story, I think, is very similar to your story in terms of this idea that it was never anywhere on his radar that he was going to leave the church.
00:41:13.114 --> 00:41:21.141
And he ended up listening to We had Hans Mattson on here, who's a former free authority.
00:41:21.501 --> 00:41:22.842
Yeah, I know about him as well.
00:41:22.902 --> 00:41:23.264
Swedish
00:41:23.324 --> 00:41:23.824
Rescue.
00:41:23.864 --> 00:41:29.813
And Jeremy had heard from the Swedish Rescue that, I think it was Marlon K.
00:41:29.853 --> 00:41:31.956
Jensen who said that there are people leaving.
00:41:31.996 --> 00:41:44.233
We've never seen a greater amount of apostasy since Kirkland than what we're having now over these issues.
00:41:44.610 --> 00:41:45.130
Yeah.
00:41:45.150 --> 00:41:46.914
And so you are not alone.
00:41:47.134 --> 00:41:48.315
There are a number of people.
00:41:48.615 --> 00:41:51.840
I'm sure you've discovered that as you've gone through this.
00:41:51.860 --> 00:42:01.094
As I listen to you, there are a couple of things that jump out at me that are sort of common in these kinds of stories.
00:42:02.498 --> 00:42:10.048
One being you went to a trusted, respected church leader.
00:42:10.128 --> 00:42:12.652
You went to your stake president with some of these questions.
00:42:13.134 --> 00:42:13.213
Yeah.
00:42:13.730 --> 00:42:16.213
And they didn't have any answers for you.
00:42:17.474 --> 00:42:21.181
And I see that over and over and over again.
00:42:21.201 --> 00:42:35.501
And one of the things that I've concluded with regard to how that works is I think very often, and Ian, you can correct me as you've been in a stake presidency.
00:42:35.621 --> 00:42:36.101
I have not.
00:42:36.143 --> 00:42:38.947
I've been in a couple of bishoprics, but I've never been in a stake presidency.
00:42:40.349 --> 00:42:58.815
Very often, when somebody goes to a stake leader or a bishop or some other trusted leader and they bring up some kind of historical or doctrinal issue that's troubling them, the response they get is, I think, motivated by fear.
00:43:00.016 --> 00:43:00.096
Yeah.
00:43:00.115 --> 00:43:03.780
Because the stake president or the bishop, they don't know either.
00:43:03.820 --> 00:43:09.726
They're a lot like your friend who says, I know there are problems with the church, but I don't want to know what they are.
00:43:10.498 --> 00:43:15.264
You know, I want to stay ignorant because that's how I can hold on to my testimony.
00:43:16.487 --> 00:43:27.503
And that's, I think, an increasing problem is that the resources to deal with these kinds of questions just aren't there.
00:43:27.545 --> 00:43:28.887
Did
00:43:29.387 --> 00:43:30.289
the essays help?
00:43:30.849 --> 00:43:35.637
In Ian's case, the essays made the problem worse.
00:43:35.737 --> 00:43:37.739
I think they made the problem worse for a lot of people.
00:43:38.001 --> 00:43:38.782
Me too, yeah.
00:43:39.362 --> 00:43:47.114
I mean, Jeremy kept saying, today's anti-Mormon lies are tomorrow's gospel topics essays.
00:43:48.898 --> 00:43:53.766
You know, the things that we were taught, particularly about race and the priesthood.
00:43:54.967 --> 00:44:10.170
You know, I didn't go to church this last Sunday because I go to music and the spoken word, but my wife came back from church and said that there was this huge discussion in Relief Society about by somebody who was mad about the race in the priesthood essay.
00:44:10.210 --> 00:44:12.175
And they said, it's wrong, it's absolutely wrong.
00:44:12.215 --> 00:44:13.436
And it was only written by men.
00:44:13.536 --> 00:44:14.739
It wasn't written by prophets.
00:44:16.121 --> 00:44:27.539
Okay, well, I mean, all of this, as I listened to you, I mean, my heart breaks because I can hear your faithfulness.
00:44:27.778 --> 00:44:37.264
I can hear your commitment and I can hear the disappointment that comes out when the church isn't what you wanted it to be or expected it to be.
00:44:37.284 --> 00:44:43.735
And, and, you know, I've gone through that in a number of different circumstances.
00:44:43.795 --> 00:44:53.690
I'm sort of going through it right now in that I'm still very frustrated with the fact that two thirds of American Latter-day Saints decided that fascism is a good thing.
00:44:53.731 --> 00:45:01.603
And, and, you know, and I like, You talk about your bishop that didn't have the discernment.
00:45:01.822 --> 00:45:04.286
It's like, we're the guys with the gift of the Holy ghost.
00:45:04.347 --> 00:45:07.512
We're the ones supposed to, to note from error.
00:45:07.672 --> 00:45:11.257
And we've thrown in with the worst possible human being in the world.
00:45:11.617 --> 00:45:11.818
Yeah.
00:45:12.318 --> 00:45:13.981
You know, it kind of is like it and looks like it.
00:45:14.822 --> 00:45:15.003
Yeah.
00:45:15.123 --> 00:45:30.943
I mean, it's just, so, so I'd still struggle with these things, but I, I have, and I've shared this a number of times, but I have felt like, an answer to prayer that this is where God wants me.
00:45:30.983 --> 00:45:36.632
This is where I can do the most good, and this is where I'm committed to stay.
00:45:37.353 --> 00:45:40.139
Everybody's
00:45:40.179 --> 00:45:42.342
different, and I don't want to...
00:45:42.864 --> 00:45:50.780
I mean, there are a lot of people that wrestle with that, and they don't get that answer, or they get an answer that's entirely different, and It is not my place to judge that.
00:45:50.800 --> 00:45:51.802
It's not my place.
00:45:53.443 --> 00:45:57.447
I think every member of the church, you talk about cafeteria Mormons.
00:45:58.509 --> 00:46:02.853
I think every member of the church is a cafeteria Mormon, whether they realize it or not.
00:46:02.873 --> 00:46:08.300
Everybody lives their own version of what the gospel is.
00:46:08.360 --> 00:46:10.903
They place emphasis on the things that matter to them.
00:46:10.923 --> 00:46:13.786
They de-emphasize the things that don't matter to them.
00:46:13.806 --> 00:46:20.065
I mean, they don't think about it in those terms, But the reality is, I don't think it's possible.
00:46:20.565 --> 00:46:29.735
The church, there isn't a version of the church that exists independent of the lived experience of the members of the church.
00:46:30.456 --> 00:46:33.019
And each person's lived experience is different.
00:46:33.239 --> 00:46:37.704
Each person's lived experience has a different focus, has a different...
00:46:38.224 --> 00:46:45.914
Anyway, so with all of that said, I believe...
00:46:47.393 --> 00:46:59.567
very strongly that the greatest problem in the church, it all boils down to the false doctrine of prophetic infallibility.
00:47:01.188 --> 00:47:06.112
You talk about the fact that you were taught, you know, these are prophets and they're always right.
00:47:06.833 --> 00:47:08.135
Church, it never be wrong.
00:47:08.175 --> 00:47:11.818
And then you find places where the church is wrong.
00:47:11.838 --> 00:47:12.880
Yeah.
00:47:12.900 --> 00:47:14.461
And it's not stupid.
00:47:14.914 --> 00:47:20.440
Well, and it's not even, I mean, the phrase that people use is faith crisis.
00:47:20.739 --> 00:47:27.947
I think the correct phrase or the phrase that's more accurate is trust crisis.
00:47:29.630 --> 00:47:29.690
Yes.
00:47:30.231 --> 00:47:32.193
You no longer trust the church.
00:47:32.253 --> 00:47:34.534
You no longer trust the leaders of the church.
00:47:35.235 --> 00:47:42.664
And that's exacerbated by being taught over and over again that these men cannot make mistakes.
00:47:42.864 --> 00:47:44.405
And then you find a mistake.
00:47:45.250 --> 00:47:47.592
And then you say, well, how can I trust them ever again?
00:47:47.632 --> 00:47:56.184
And I think if, and the other thing, Andrew, you talk about this idea of, you know, there aren't always speaking as prophets.
00:47:57.106 --> 00:47:58.307
Sometimes they speak as prophets.
00:47:58.327 --> 00:48:01.771
Sometimes they speak as men, you know, and were they speaking as a prophet?
00:48:01.791 --> 00:48:02.813
Were they speaking as a man?
00:48:02.853 --> 00:48:12.626
And I really think that if the church is going to go forward in a healthy, sustainable way, we have to get rid of that dichotomy.
00:48:12.706 --> 00:48:23.735
We have to accept the reality that that every time a prophet speaks, they are speaking as a man, even when they are speaking as a prophet.
00:48:24.215 --> 00:48:31.824
That there is never a time when their agency is extracted from them and they are incapable of making a mistake.
00:48:32.505 --> 00:48:42.376
They can get up at the pulpit, and I think the promise that prophets will never lead us astray is a promise of intent, not impact.
00:48:43.677 --> 00:48:54.237
Meaning, The promise is that the Lord will never allow someone to deliberately try to derail the church, that their intentions will be good.
00:48:54.838 --> 00:49:00.284
And if they are trying to derail the church, then I think they will be removed.
00:49:01.005 --> 00:49:04.590
But that does not mean that they can't wander in the wilderness for 40 years.
00:49:05.311 --> 00:49:07.494
They can't make significant mistakes.
00:49:08.034 --> 00:49:19.199
I mean, when you talk about mistakes, you know, a lot of members of the church sort of round off the edges of that by saying, well, yeah, they can make mistakes.
00:49:19.260 --> 00:49:20.762
They can forget your birthday.
00:49:20.862 --> 00:49:26.307
They can make those kinds of mistakes.
00:49:26.829 --> 00:49:30.773
But when they get up and they preach, they can never make a mistake.
00:49:30.833 --> 00:49:52.278
And it's like, well, guys, if you believe that, then you have to reconcile, to use Ian's word, Some terrible, horrible things, particularly that Brigham Young said about race, that interracial relationships should be punished with death on the spot, and that this is the law of God that will always be so.
00:49:52.298 --> 00:50:03.657
If you can't just say, well, Brigham Young was really quite wrong on that point, then you have to just do these, and I hate the phrase mental gymnastics because I think it's cliche.
00:50:04.038 --> 00:50:04.318
Yeah.
00:50:05.121 --> 00:50:08.865
That's the phrase you were looking for, the mental gymnastics.
00:50:10.146 --> 00:50:21.719
But if you can accept that fallibility is not a bug, it's a feature, it's the purpose of mortality.
00:50:22.601 --> 00:50:30.650
We have a theology where we believe that we came to this earth solely for the purpose of making mistakes.
00:50:31.074 --> 00:50:33.717
of doing things wrong and learning from them.
00:50:33.757 --> 00:50:41.208
And that's why we needed a savior who essentially is paying for our education, if you will, at an infinite cost.
00:50:41.527 --> 00:50:43.471
And we're just thinking that about the leaders, don't we?
00:50:44.012 --> 00:50:53.784
I don't know what level it is, if it's the stake, the 70s, or the stake for the first presidency where we suddenly, we start thinking that they are not making mistakes anymore.
00:50:54.666 --> 00:50:55.887
That's interesting.
00:50:56.588 --> 00:50:57.851
No, that's exactly right.
00:50:58.291 --> 00:51:07.480
It'd also be very difficult to do and you've got all the other members who would shoot you down in flames if you dared to say, that's not right, he's made a mistake there.
00:51:08.242 --> 00:51:21.922
You know, especially, you know, I'm trying to say this nicely, especially American Utah Mormons, you know, they really, you just cannot go against the prophet's teachings or you're just the worst of the worst.
00:51:21.942 --> 00:51:22.063
I
00:51:22.362 --> 00:51:26.548
think, Jim, for me, your finger right on it is how the church addresses it now.
00:51:26.929 --> 00:51:58.581
If there were people that when members have questions like we do if they're willing to discuss them not just say well you obviously don't have enough faith or you're listening to anti-mormon things if they're willing to talk about them more that would help members to stay in and then a whole sea change has to take place within the membership to look at each other and the leaders and not be judgmental and realise the leaders are just us but in a higher calling and that was never what we were
00:51:59.938 --> 00:52:01.699
No, that is exactly right.
00:52:02.780 --> 00:52:13.130
You know, when I was 18 years old, I was at the University of Southern California, and I went and checked out a copy of The Godmakers, which was the big anti-Mormon book in the 80s.
00:52:13.231 --> 00:52:15.032
It was the CES letter of its time.
00:52:15.092 --> 00:52:19.016
Jeremy hates it when I say that, but that's kind of the way it is.
00:52:19.936 --> 00:52:22.378
And that's where I learned a lot of these troubling issues.
00:52:23.199 --> 00:52:32.059
And I was in a unique situation in that I took my doubts and questions— to two people particularly.
00:52:32.320 --> 00:52:39.389
One was my father, and the other was my uncle, who was also the stake president in Los Angeles.
00:52:40.230 --> 00:52:41.711
I'm not a Utah Mormon by...
00:52:41.731 --> 00:52:49.760
I grew up in Southern California, so when you say Utah Mormon, I'm not offended, even though I've lived in Utah much longer than I've lived in Southern California now.
00:52:50.902 --> 00:52:57.030
But both of them were patient, kind...
00:52:57.793 --> 00:53:00.998
and were able to help me sort of walk through these things.
00:53:01.739 --> 00:53:08.570
And they didn't have the kind of fear response because I think, Andrew, that when they say to you, you don't have enough faith, you shouldn't be listening to this.
00:53:09.693 --> 00:53:11.476
That's coming from a place of fear.
00:53:11.516 --> 00:53:15.141
That's coming from, well, I've never listened to this and I don't know the answer.
00:53:15.222 --> 00:53:19.168
And all I can tell you is you shouldn't have listened to it and you're bad.
00:53:19.208 --> 00:53:24.697
And they start to shame you instead of actually dealing with your questions.
00:53:25.793 --> 00:53:30.039
And that, I think, has just, we keep digging that hole.
00:53:30.059 --> 00:53:35.864
I mean, that's now essentially the response.
00:53:35.965 --> 00:53:45.275
I mean, we've had several talks in conference and at BYU devotionals and other places where they've addressed faith crisis.
00:53:46.637 --> 00:53:51.501
And the main thing they do to address it is essentially shame the person.
00:53:52.226 --> 00:53:54.969
He was Elder Renlund.
00:53:54.989 --> 00:53:56.210
He used this analogy of...
00:53:56.550 --> 00:53:57.331
Lazy learners.
00:53:58.331 --> 00:54:00.534
Lazy learners, you're the lax disciples.
00:54:01.335 --> 00:54:04.197
But it's Elder Renlund who used this analogy of...
00:54:04.237 --> 00:54:11.204
There's this guy, this kid, essentially, that's out drowning.
00:54:12.346 --> 00:54:17.210
And this old fisherman comes and picks him up in a battered kind of boat.
00:54:17.331 --> 00:54:19.833
And the kid gets in the boat and starts asking for...
00:54:20.769 --> 00:54:49.617
uh perrier water and only gets canteen water and then is disgusted because this boat isn't nice enough even though it saved his life and then he jumps out of the boat and gets eaten by sharks i mean that's the analogy and and so the moral of the story is if you aren't satisfied with the answers you're getting you're just like a kid who would rather drown than not drink really high quality bottled water.
00:54:49.916 --> 00:54:54.184
I mean, it's, it's the thing.
00:54:54.224 --> 00:55:10.751
And the other thing the church does, or at least has gotten better at, uh, but the church does acknowledge that they are capable of making mistakes in, um, what's the word I'm looking for in general.
00:55:11.273 --> 00:55:13.556
I mean, theoretically, exactly.
00:55:13.597 --> 00:55:14.157
That's the word.
00:55:14.465 --> 00:55:16.728
Theoretically, yes, the church can make mistakes.
00:55:16.847 --> 00:55:19.931
And then the minute you say, okay, which ones?
00:55:20.851 --> 00:55:22.554
Tell me a mistake.
00:55:24.675 --> 00:55:26.717
Then you're not allowed to do that at all.
00:55:26.797 --> 00:55:30.322
I mean, Ian talks a lot about then President Uchtdorf.
00:55:30.382 --> 00:55:36.668
He's now Elder Uchtdorf, but he was in the first presidency when he gave that wonderful talk, Come Join With Us.
00:55:37.068 --> 00:55:41.893
And he said, there are times in our history when leaders have simply made mistakes.
00:55:43.233 --> 00:55:51.264
And a lot of people heard that and went, well, yeah, of course they made mistakes, but then they sort of, but they were these kinds of mistakes.
00:55:51.284 --> 00:55:52.324
They were tiny mistakes.
00:55:52.385 --> 00:55:54.867
They couldn't have possibly made big mistakes.
00:55:56.269 --> 00:56:07.364
And so the church doctrinally, in his very first press conference as a member of the first presidency, Dallin H.
00:56:07.523 --> 00:56:10.827
Oaks said, we do not believe in infallible leaders.
00:56:12.289 --> 00:56:20.364
And So the church is happy to say that, but they're not happy if you have any follow-up questions.
00:56:21.586 --> 00:56:25.873
If you want to say, well, okay, so leaders aren't infallible, so leaders can make mistakes.
00:56:25.934 --> 00:56:28.478
Can you please tell me, was this a mistake?
00:56:28.538 --> 00:56:29.599
Could this have been a mistake?
00:56:30.221 --> 00:56:37.150
I mean, the gospel topics essays, one of the reasons why I think they're counterproductive is that they're sort of a half measure.
00:56:38.333 --> 00:56:41.257
That yes, okay, we acknowledge there's been a problem.
00:56:41.954 --> 00:56:46.380
Uh, but we don't want to let anybody know that these essays even exist.
00:56:46.481 --> 00:56:48.422
So we're going to just release them quietly.
00:56:48.443 --> 00:56:52.750
And then when you read in particular, yeah, they're very hard to find.
00:56:52.789 --> 00:57:11.728
And, and you read the, the race and the priesthood essay and they acknowledge that everything that we taught about, you know, black people bearing the curse of Cain, black people, uh, being fence sitters or less righteous in the pre-mortal existence.
00:57:13.670 --> 00:57:24.364
All these things, all those are wrong, but they're not willing to cross that line and say, and the priesthood ban itself was wrong too.
00:57:25.306 --> 00:57:27.349
All they can say is- That's where the
00:57:27.469 --> 00:57:31.313
issue comes in though, because if they do do that, how many people are going to walk away?
00:57:32.449 --> 00:57:34.853
Well, but the thing is, I mean, you're right.
00:57:35.072 --> 00:57:35.954
They handled it properly.
00:57:35.974 --> 00:57:36.855
They wouldn't want an ailment.
00:57:37.155 --> 00:57:53.012
Well, the thing is, I think short term, if the church were to come out and admit, okay, yes, we have been wrong on things, large and small, including race in the priesthood and other things, I think there will be some people that walk away.
00:57:53.253 --> 00:57:57.277
But I think we are...
00:57:57.318 --> 00:58:00.621
We are...
00:58:00.994 --> 00:58:03.876
selling the future at the cost of the present.
00:58:05.878 --> 00:58:13.045
Because I think the minute the church is able to admit fallibility, they are able to build trust.
00:58:13.545 --> 00:58:21.134
It becomes easier to trust somebody if they can come to you and say, you know what, I was wrong, and I hope you can forgive me, but I was wrong.
00:58:21.173 --> 00:58:23.536
That's somebody you end up trusting.
00:58:23.576 --> 00:58:35.596
If the church were to be able to do that long-term, people then, it's like, well, yeah, I discovered the church really goofed up on this.
00:58:36.076 --> 00:58:40.621
Do you not think, though, that that's taken away the whole selling of the church?
00:58:41.382 --> 00:58:47.449
That we have a living prophet who talks to God, tells us how to live our lives, guides us.
00:58:48.469 --> 00:58:52.373
That's the whole crux to me of the church.
00:58:53.155 --> 00:58:55.056
It's one of the biggest differences in another church.
00:58:55.097 --> 00:58:57.480
There's a living prophet who talks to God.
00:58:58.380 --> 00:59:04.773
And if they then say, well, maybe he doesn't always talk to God and maybe he does tell us things wrong and there is a fallibility.
00:59:05.554 --> 00:59:14.688
That's a big thing for them to lose their claim of being, you know, the church that has God as its head who actually speaks to a living prophet.
00:59:15.268 --> 00:59:15.969
They would lose that.
00:59:16.951 --> 00:59:44.335
00:59:44.394 --> 00:59:52.563
In fact, he is the definitive, exclusive, sole mouthpiece of Jesus Christ here on the earth.
00:59:53.125 --> 00:59:56.909
And so we're asked to put our complete trust in him.
00:59:57.666 --> 01:00:03.394
and that we're told that he will never lead as a stray, literally, not just figuratively, but literally.
01:00:04.297 --> 01:00:14.534
And so the problem, I think, and Jim's right, I think it's that problem of infallibility with leaders, is that when is the prophet speaking as a man or as a prophet?
01:00:15.297 --> 01:00:21.724
You made a point earlier, Andy, about how do we really know if he's speaking as a prophet or if he's speaking as a man?
01:00:21.744 --> 01:00:22.724
I mean, that's a whole other...
01:00:23.346 --> 01:00:33.074
There's never been a talk that I recall at church conference or even in a state conference around that subject about when do we know if he's speaking as a man or not.
01:00:33.094 --> 01:00:40.541
I think the church will never go there because that is the keystone, right, I think, of the church.
01:00:40.581 --> 01:00:42.103
You know, the church...
01:00:42.563 --> 01:00:44.505
Prophets have said the church rests or falls...
01:00:45.057 --> 01:00:55.748
on whether the prophet is, if Joseph Smith was a prophet or not, whether we have a living prophet or not, and whether the Book of Mormon is the word of God or not, being the keystone.
01:00:56.349 --> 01:01:09.601
And so that fundamental building block there, if there's any doubt in people's minds whether the prophet is making a mistake, why on earth would you follow somebody at the risk of them making a mistake?
01:01:09.621 --> 01:01:13.025
And the church has made some serious mistakes, very serious mistakes.
01:01:13.570 --> 01:01:35.744
introduce those very strict changes in regards to LGBTQ in 2015, Jim, in regards to children staying with one of the gay parents and restrictions on children in terms of getting baptized, etc.
01:01:35.764 --> 01:01:39.009
Restrictions, obviously, on people who were gay going to the church.
01:01:39.088 --> 01:01:40.490
That was another broader conversation.
01:01:40.891 --> 01:01:41.873
And then it reversed it.
01:01:41.913 --> 01:01:43.474
Was it 2019, Jim?
01:01:43.494 --> 01:01:46.259
I think they reversed it.
01:01:46.880 --> 01:01:47.661
Two and a half years later.
01:01:47.701 --> 01:01:50.929
So, That's one of many examples where the church...
01:01:51.530 --> 01:01:59.039
And by the way, on that point, just as I want to highlight this, President Nelson, was he the prophet at the time, Jim, at that time?
01:01:59.079 --> 01:02:00.740
In 2015,
01:02:00.981 --> 01:02:01.521
I think?
01:02:02.023 --> 01:02:08.710
He was the president of the Quorum of the Twelve at a time when President Monson, who was the prophet, was incapacitated.
01:02:09.331 --> 01:02:09.831
Right, okay.
01:02:10.172 --> 01:02:10.733
I remember
01:02:11.755 --> 01:02:21.385
one of the prophets, it could have been President Nelson, I think it was, where he went into great lengths, I think he's on video saying this as well, describing the revelatory process.
01:02:21.865 --> 01:02:23.108
No, it was President Nelson.
01:02:23.329 --> 01:02:26.914
While he was president, he described, he was at BYU Hawaii.
01:02:27.516 --> 01:02:27.657
Yeah.
01:02:27.836 --> 01:02:37.715
And he described that they were all wrestling with what to do in the wake of the legalization of gay marriage throughout the United States by the United States Supreme Court.
01:02:38.936 --> 01:02:46.150
And But then finally, the spirit of revelation rested on the prophet, President Thomas Monson, who spoke the word of the Lord.
01:02:46.170 --> 01:02:52.599
And then there was a unanimous consent among the apostles.
01:02:53.440 --> 01:03:01.451
And the problem with that is that none of the other apostles recall any such meeting of this taking place.
01:03:02.751 --> 01:03:17.188
And in fact, Elder Christofferson, who was called upon by to speak directly by church PR about it, learned about it from the press, learned about the policy change from the press.
01:03:17.347 --> 01:03:52.398
01:03:53.019 --> 01:03:56.965
And these were diametrically opposed to each other.
01:03:57.005 --> 01:04:01.572
And yet they were both, so apparently God changed his mind.
01:04:03.014 --> 01:04:04.376
They
01:04:04.416 --> 01:04:04.737
didn't.
01:04:05.762 --> 01:04:10.786
They didn't explain it, and it caused a lot of problems, and it caused a lot of trust crises.
01:04:11.947 --> 01:04:26.503
It's interesting when you talk about the fact that this is the selling point of the church, that the selling point of the church is we have a prophet that speaks directly to God.
01:04:27.324 --> 01:04:46.806
See, I don't believe that President Nelson or any prophet except on very rare occasions, I don't believe they experience a connection to the divine any different from the one that you and I experience.
01:04:47.367 --> 01:04:54.672
That they get their revelation through promptings, through prayer, through the same sort of process.
01:04:54.733 --> 01:04:56.255
These are the same kinds of people.
01:04:56.815 --> 01:05:15.387
I think there are exceptions to that, but I spent a great deal of my time Growing up, particularly, I'm not sure when I finally decided this was nonsense, but I grew up thinking that, okay, yeah, the apostles meet every week in the upper rooms of the temple.
01:05:16.469 --> 01:05:19.873
And there's probably an extra chair there for when Jesus comes.
01:05:20.695 --> 01:05:31.411
And he doesn't come, maybe he doesn't come every week, but, you know, sometimes he brings the refreshments, you know, so he shows up every other week, maybe, you know, I no longer believe that.
01:05:32.192 --> 01:05:42.889
And, and I, You know, when pressed, the apostles, they try very hard to sort of maintain an ambiguity about that.
01:05:43.030 --> 01:05:47.297
It's like, well, when they're asked specifically, have you seen Jesus Christ?
01:05:48.639 --> 01:05:48.719
Yeah.
01:05:48.739 --> 01:05:51.684
They give these sort of evasive answers.
01:05:52.365 --> 01:05:57.353
And to me, prophets and apostles of the Lord would not do that.
01:05:58.235 --> 01:05:59.318
Like, they would be lost.
01:06:00.353 --> 01:06:05.862
One of your tithing questions, are you honest in all your dealings with your fellow man?
01:06:05.902 --> 01:06:10.989
And I went out of my way to make sure I could answer that.
01:06:11.170 --> 01:06:13.454
I could not tell a lie if my life depended on it.
01:06:14.275 --> 01:06:15.856
But the church is lying to us.
01:06:16.378 --> 01:06:20.164
And the prophets or the apostles will not come out and be honest about these things.
01:06:22.987 --> 01:06:23.608
Yeah, it's just...
01:06:26.052 --> 01:06:26.974
I don't even know how to...
01:06:27.106 --> 01:06:29.349
You're describing a trust crisis.
01:06:29.570 --> 01:06:30.530
Yeah, yeah, yeah,
01:06:30.831 --> 01:06:31.954
definitely.
01:06:32.815 --> 01:06:41.148
I often wonder how the church is going to survive, especially with the way society changes now with the LGBTQ+, and all the other issues going on.
01:06:41.708 --> 01:06:45.434
And it does have to try and reorganize or rebrand itself.
01:06:45.795 --> 01:06:57.108
Like you said, Jim, to admit that prophets are men, and even if they don't go as far as to say that they're always speaking as men, but to admit the fact that They can make mistakes.
01:06:57.168 --> 01:07:05.619
It'd be interesting to see how they can save the church in some kind of form because there was lots about it that I like and still like.
01:07:06.420 --> 01:07:24.706
And there's lots of things in Christian faith and other faiths but in Christian faith that I think are great for people to learn and I enjoyed learning them in the Mormon church and it'd be sad to see that completely disappear but I don't know how it's going to survive and rebrand and move forward from this.
01:07:25.090 --> 01:07:37.003
Because they've painted themselves into a corner by telling everybody that the prophets are always right, that they will never lead you astray, and they've got these issues with the LGBTQ.
01:07:37.483 --> 01:07:43.070
And it's the same with back in the day when polygamy was a thing.
01:07:43.510 --> 01:07:46.713
And then all of a sudden they realised, oh, we're not going to be able to do this or that, the next thing.
01:07:46.753 --> 01:07:53.521
Suddenly, remarkably, there's a revelation that says we're not going to do it anymore.
01:07:54.210 --> 01:08:06.047
You know, it's just, so if it was right then, and I'm not just talking about polygamy, but if it was right then, if this prophet said that's the way it was to be, God must make some big mistakes because he's changing them.
01:08:06.547 --> 01:08:10.994
Like three and a half years later, he's changing
01:08:11.014 --> 01:08:11.235
them.
01:08:11.255 --> 01:08:21.010
With race in the priesthood, we are more comfortable saying God was a racist than we are saying that Brigham Young was a racist.
01:08:21.029 --> 01:08:21.310
That's right.
01:08:21.474 --> 01:08:22.496
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:08:22.515 --> 01:08:24.278
Because we can't in Africa be wrong.
01:08:25.100 --> 01:08:25.300
Right.
01:08:26.822 --> 01:08:36.818
But getting back to your whole idea of this, you know, the central thing is the president of the church, the prophet, that's the key feature of the church.
01:08:37.939 --> 01:08:46.654
I think the way forward is that the key feature of the church, not a bug, but the feature of the church is its fallibility.
01:08:46.978 --> 01:08:59.850
That we embrace, you know, we have this whole theology of this idea of the reason we came to earth is that we lived in the presence of God for an eternity before we came here.
01:09:00.992 --> 01:09:04.755
And we didn't have to exercise faith.
01:09:04.854 --> 01:09:15.685
We didn't have to choose good versus evil because the preeminent example, we always knew what the right thing to do was because we were living in the presence of God.
01:09:16.449 --> 01:09:23.759
And we left the presence of God because the only way to learn and to grow is to be fallible.
01:09:23.779 --> 01:09:35.432
I mean, I think if the church were to not just sort of acknowledge this grudgingly, which is kind of the direction we're going, sort of, but we're not really even willing to do that.
01:09:36.213 --> 01:09:41.644
But I think it needs to be a full-on embrace of Yes, we are fallible.
01:09:42.024 --> 01:09:43.125
We make mistakes.
01:09:43.265 --> 01:09:48.390
That is the purpose of mortality, and that is why we need Jesus Christ so desperately.
01:09:48.411 --> 01:09:52.234
I think that is the only way forward.
01:09:52.555 --> 01:09:57.381
And I think that, yes, I think a lot of people will say, well, I don't need your church then.
01:09:58.542 --> 01:10:15.707
But I think a lot more will also say it's so wonderful to share this kind of community with and have this fellowship of saints who are all fallible together, even their leaders, and all of us can work together to build the kingdom of God.
01:10:15.726 --> 01:10:18.189
I think that is a powerful story.
01:10:18.210 --> 01:10:20.793
I think that's the story the church ought to be telling.
01:10:21.675 --> 01:10:24.899
And right now, it doesn't seem to be the one that we're telling.
01:10:25.060 --> 01:10:32.750
And I think that your experience demonstrates just how short we're falling on that.
01:10:34.177 --> 01:10:37.143
We're coming to the end of the podcast.
01:10:37.884 --> 01:10:44.573
Jim has articulated exactly what I was going to say, so I think that's really, really good.
01:10:44.935 --> 01:11:05.421
It ties to what you both were saying, but also what you were saying, Andy, about, you said earlier, I made some notes here, that if the church handled it differently, when people have questions and they handle it differently because the church puts so much resources into the missionary effort You know, missionaries go to the MTC.
01:11:05.541 --> 01:11:06.943
They get trained for three weeks.
01:11:06.962 --> 01:11:07.823
They learn a language.
01:11:09.926 --> 01:11:11.708
You know, they go away for two years.
01:11:12.248 --> 01:11:15.153
Huge resources behind the missionary effort, you know, globally.
01:11:15.934 --> 01:11:21.140
And the church spends hundreds of millions of dollars on the missionary effort to bring people in.
01:11:21.180 --> 01:11:29.771
And then the training that bishops get, and when I was the bishop in Dalkeith, this is the training that we got, was to, you know, when...
01:11:30.292 --> 01:11:30.993
So we'd meet with...
01:11:31.810 --> 01:11:34.011
President Watson every quarter.
01:11:34.032 --> 01:11:38.277
And we'd meet with some of the general authorities sometimes.
01:11:38.356 --> 01:11:43.782
And the training we would get is how do we more effectively and efficiently retain people that came into the church?
01:11:44.363 --> 01:11:49.287
So a lot of training and support to how to help bishops and bishoprics.
01:11:49.368 --> 01:11:52.792
And you and I served on the same bishopric, Andy, so we talked about this.
01:11:54.453 --> 01:11:57.036
How do we keep people in the church?
01:11:57.076 --> 01:11:58.658
So a lot of time, a lot of resources.
01:11:59.137 --> 01:12:01.760
You know, people get callings and they serve.
01:12:02.220 --> 01:12:11.109
And I want to highlight something we say, because it's really important, that there's a great amount of joy that comes from serving in the church.
01:12:11.710 --> 01:12:14.231
I felt it, you felt it, you feel it, Jim.
01:12:14.972 --> 01:12:20.899
And I want to, despite all these challenges, want to, and that's something, when you said earlier, Andy, you miss, I really miss that.
01:12:21.899 --> 01:12:28.064
That really resonated with me, and personally and emotionally, and I miss that deeply.
01:12:28.706 --> 01:12:35.055
And it breaks my heart that I don't have that in that way anymore.
01:12:35.136 --> 01:12:36.377
I get it in other ways now.
01:12:37.859 --> 01:12:42.847
But the reward and the fulfillment that you can have through serving the church is extraordinary.
01:12:42.868 --> 01:12:43.148
It really is.
01:12:43.668 --> 01:12:54.685
But then when you have questions and doubts, the church becomes, for me at least, and probably Caroline and you felt the same thing, becomes a place you don't feel safe anymore.
01:12:55.073 --> 01:12:56.216
to ask questions.
01:12:56.337 --> 01:12:57.078
No, you can't.
01:12:57.439 --> 01:13:06.118
And then if you do ask questions like I did, in my experience, you get labeled as a doubter and a troublemaker or whatever, right?
01:13:06.399 --> 01:13:11.509
So, and there's no, and Jim made his point earlier, there's no And you spoke to this, Andy, as well.
01:13:11.569 --> 01:13:13.972
There's very limited or virtually no resources.
01:13:14.012 --> 01:13:16.737
So all the resources are here, you know, to come into the church.
01:13:17.257 --> 01:13:21.203
Significant resources to keep people in the church, keep people active and busy, which is great.
01:13:21.805 --> 01:13:25.110
And then all of a sudden, there's virtually, it's like a cliff, a drop off.
01:13:25.150 --> 01:13:25.832
You're on your own.
01:13:25.872 --> 01:13:29.877
And the closer you go to the more difficult questions is the edge of the cliff.
01:13:30.498 --> 01:13:34.725
And you find as you get towards the cliff, all of a sudden, there's no one around you.
01:13:35.265 --> 01:13:36.207
You're there by yourself.
01:13:36.408 --> 01:13:37.328
You've got these questions.
01:13:37.550 --> 01:13:39.131
There's no support, if any.
01:13:39.773 --> 01:13:43.338
And a question I've got before we close our podcast is...
01:13:43.960 --> 01:13:47.805
And by the way, I want to thank you so much for coming on here and sharing your story and your experiences.
01:13:47.886 --> 01:13:48.167
Pleasure.
01:13:49.307 --> 01:13:51.252
You mentioned earlier that no one's reached out.
01:13:51.471 --> 01:13:52.193
You've left the church.
01:13:52.753 --> 01:13:53.295
You're happy.
01:13:53.335 --> 01:13:55.217
You feel like an adult.
01:13:55.438 --> 01:13:56.300
You've got some...
01:13:56.680 --> 01:13:58.203
You miss some things, which I...
01:13:58.743 --> 01:14:01.387
You spoke about, Andy, about the spirituality.
01:14:01.427 --> 01:14:02.550
You...
01:14:02.978 --> 01:14:08.923
But you're happy with your life and you've found a place in life and you're close to your family.
01:14:08.944 --> 01:14:13.268
Your family's now, probably Alan is probably feeling much more connected.
01:14:13.287 --> 01:14:15.229
This Jim Digital.
01:14:15.550 --> 01:14:17.171
Much more connected,
01:14:17.231 --> 01:14:17.492
yeah.
01:14:17.612 --> 01:14:19.394
And I did pick up on that.
01:14:20.113 --> 01:14:26.020
But since you talked earlier about you've had little or no support since you left the church.
01:14:26.479 --> 01:14:29.904
Has anyone asked you why you left the church?
01:14:30.384 --> 01:14:32.445
And then, okay, interesting.
01:14:32.673 --> 01:14:32.913
Not
01:14:33.494 --> 01:14:34.235
one.
01:14:34.355 --> 01:14:36.139
Not even the people that we're still close
01:14:36.158 --> 01:14:36.359
to.
01:14:36.479 --> 01:14:38.943
That topic is studiously avoided.
01:14:38.983 --> 01:14:40.444
Right, right.
01:14:40.506 --> 01:14:40.886
Interesting.
01:14:41.186 --> 01:14:44.872
And I think that's, to Jim's point, I think that's probably...
01:14:45.453 --> 01:14:51.521
From what I've can surmise from the Facebook page and things I'm on, they don't want to ask you.
01:14:51.542 --> 01:14:58.591
They're kind of told don't ask because we might tell them something that's going to ruin their church life as well.
01:14:58.652 --> 01:15:00.774
And part of you don't want to do that.
01:15:01.275 --> 01:15:04.744
Especially young listeners, we've had a Admission has come to the door a few times over the years.
01:15:04.765 --> 01:15:05.466
Because they were sent.
01:15:05.546 --> 01:15:06.686
And not because they were sent.
01:15:06.726 --> 01:15:07.488
They're knocking on doors.
01:15:08.309 --> 01:15:11.132
And it's kind of like kicking a puppy.
01:15:12.354 --> 01:15:13.395
You don't want to damage...
01:15:13.416 --> 01:15:14.016
They're out there.
01:15:14.056 --> 01:15:15.399
They're taking their time.
01:15:15.578 --> 01:15:18.261
And it must be so frightening for them as well.
01:15:18.842 --> 01:15:21.926
You don't want to dampen their enthusiasm for something.
01:15:22.006 --> 01:15:24.690
If they're getting something out of me just now, that's great.
01:15:25.252 --> 01:15:29.056
I would totally tell people my problems with the shift if they asked me.
01:15:29.237 --> 01:15:29.837
I would never...
01:15:30.337 --> 01:16:16.152
try and you know I was like this actually um even as a member I was not a pushy member that tried to you know get all my neighbors um joining the church that just wasn't me I'm not like that I would I would hope that they would come to me and ask me if they saw good things that I always thought it was better to try and be a good example and people might want to know why so I was never a pushy mormon like that and then neither am I and the other side of the coin I would not unless somebody came and specifically said what was your problems why did you leave I will never bring it up I will never go because I didn't want to take that away like I say I'm angry and sad that it's been taken from me my belief in God I don't want to do that to anybody else
01:16:16.712 --> 01:16:16.792
I
01:16:17.273 --> 01:16:17.854
don't want to do that
01:16:18.018 --> 01:16:23.904
I think that comment speaks volumes about your integrity, Carol, and yours, Andy, as well.
01:16:24.284 --> 01:16:42.323
You know, these mysteries that knock on the door, they're kids, ultimately, and they don't have, probably haven't got, they haven't had the training to deal with the tough questions that, you know, the questions that probably we didn't have maybe as mysteries at times, Jim, when you and I were serving in Scotland.
01:16:42.524 --> 01:16:48.791
As we come to a close here, the final question I have for you both, and I want to get your response to this.
01:16:48.850 --> 01:16:55.096
And I want to hand some time over to give opportunity for Jim to give his some closing thoughts that he may have.
01:16:55.837 --> 01:17:11.551
But my question for you is, with all you've experienced, you know, coming to the church car line, you came in, you know, and then you left for a while and then you came back in and you met Andy and you came back in and you had, for the most part, a wonderful experience.
01:17:12.132 --> 01:17:19.792
Then the questions came and the issues came and you've left and you're in this place, You know, now, Andy, you still believe.
01:17:21.113 --> 01:17:22.675
Caroline, you're more agnostic.
01:17:22.694 --> 01:17:23.496
You're not sure.
01:17:23.576 --> 01:17:24.077
You don't know.
01:17:24.096 --> 01:17:24.997
I'm not an
01:17:25.018 --> 01:17:25.679
atheist.
01:17:25.698 --> 01:17:26.699
Definitely not an atheist.
01:17:26.939 --> 01:17:27.600
Just not sure.
01:17:27.940 --> 01:17:28.240
Sure.
01:17:28.402 --> 01:17:30.283
And that's common as well.
01:17:30.684 --> 01:17:43.658
My question, last question is, what advice would you give someone, a couple or an individual, who's got questions and they're trying to navigate their faith?
01:17:44.298 --> 01:17:46.341
And then after your response, Jim, if you could...
01:17:47.073 --> 01:17:49.395
share your final thoughts or comments.
01:17:49.435 --> 01:17:50.717
That would be great.
01:17:51.198 --> 01:17:51.798
And then we'll close.
01:17:51.819 --> 01:17:51.859
Is
01:17:52.259 --> 01:17:56.404
this a couple that's in the church navigating faith or a couple trying to find a church?
01:17:57.203 --> 01:17:57.864
What do you mean?
01:17:57.885 --> 01:17:58.466
Navigating faith.
01:17:59.766 --> 01:18:00.307
Good question.
01:18:00.368 --> 01:18:01.569
Is that like a thumb?
01:18:02.069 --> 01:18:05.912
Yeah, somebody who is, well, whatever you want to answer.
01:18:06.052 --> 01:18:14.021
If someone is in the church, they're struggling with questions and doubts, what advice would you give them to help them navigate the faith?
01:18:14.594 --> 01:18:16.775
Oh my goodness, that is a hard one.
01:18:16.796 --> 01:18:27.707
I think because I am a genuinely honest person, like I have a, you know, my background, I have a reason, I'm not going to go into that, about why I just cannot tell lies.
01:18:28.247 --> 01:18:29.408
It ruined my childhood.
01:18:29.649 --> 01:18:31.490
My dad was the biggest flyer walker.
01:18:31.850 --> 01:18:32.771
And it's, I hate it.
01:18:33.012 --> 01:18:33.353
Cannot.
01:18:33.752 --> 01:18:42.101
So I would not, I would, I would just say to them, well, I'll give you answers to how I feel, but only if you want, mum.
01:18:42.497 --> 01:18:45.060
But I would say just be honest with yourself.
01:18:47.962 --> 01:18:48.844
Look into things.
01:18:50.085 --> 01:18:50.725
Research.
01:18:52.006 --> 01:18:53.809
Look for your answers.
01:18:55.270 --> 01:18:59.494
And then when you get them, just be honest with yourself about how you feel about them.
01:19:00.274 --> 01:19:01.856
Don't try to stay in.
01:19:01.917 --> 01:19:02.858
Don't try to get out.
01:19:03.137 --> 01:19:06.360
Just go where it takes you, I think.
01:19:06.841 --> 01:19:08.502
It's a difficult one.
01:19:08.542 --> 01:19:11.025
Try and find somebody to talk to.
01:19:12.225 --> 01:19:16.891
in the church in your bishopric or your stake try and find somebody that's willing to try
01:19:16.931 --> 01:19:45.440
and get answers to your questions and then go where those answers take you might be in might be out I would never push them in either direction I would just say try and find some answers if it's from your leaders or if it's from study looking into things being on that like that Facebook group that I joined because I was looking for answers that's that I think It's a difficult question because you don't want to rob people of their church membership.
01:19:45.520 --> 01:19:53.930
And I know, as I said in the beginning, it's easy for us here in Scotland because we're few and far between to walk away from the church.
01:19:53.951 --> 01:19:54.712
It's not a big deal.
01:19:55.372 --> 01:20:01.460
But when you're in an area where all your neighbours are Mormons and your friends that you work with are Mormons.
01:20:01.600 --> 01:20:03.943
I mean, I hear some of the stories.
01:20:04.023 --> 01:20:16.514
It breaks my heart about how one girl said that her husband had sent her a text message to say, You either get your act together, stop asking questions, or I am leaving because I want the temple marriage thing.
01:20:17.475 --> 01:20:23.663
These are things that are happening to people in the States, in particular in Utah.
01:20:25.226 --> 01:20:30.673
So you would never want to put somebody down a particular direction.
01:20:30.793 --> 01:20:32.917
All I would say is look for answers.
01:20:32.978 --> 01:20:33.238
Pray.
01:20:34.038 --> 01:20:38.826
I never prayed harder in my life than the months leading up to me walking away.
01:20:39.105 --> 01:20:40.427
I prayed so hard.
01:20:41.009 --> 01:20:45.734
Driving my car, everywhere I went, I was wrestling with myself and praying and praying and praying.
01:20:46.695 --> 01:20:48.918
And I just went to where that took me.
01:20:49.220 --> 01:20:50.862
And I'd say the same advice to other people.
01:20:51.703 --> 01:20:52.863
Go where the answers take you.
01:20:53.585 --> 01:20:55.067
Well, that's wonderful advice.
01:20:55.127 --> 01:20:55.688
Thank you so much.
01:20:55.908 --> 01:20:58.252
Jim, any closing thoughts from your end?
01:20:59.233 --> 01:21:07.904
No thoughts other than to thank both Carlene and Andy for just being such wonderful human beings and for sharing your story.
01:21:08.064 --> 01:21:08.706
I think...
01:21:09.569 --> 01:21:14.817
I think you're going to help a lot of people by sharing this and by being so open with it.
01:21:15.417 --> 01:21:15.979
I hope so.
01:21:16.699 --> 01:21:30.717
And I think you are going to help the church, whether the church realizes it or not, because there are so many people, so many good, wonderful people like you who've had similar experiences.
01:21:31.198 --> 01:21:37.787
And those of us who are still in the church need to hear these stories so that we can...
01:21:39.810 --> 01:21:42.332
you know, so that we can fix the problems.
01:21:42.993 --> 01:21:46.737
So the kind of church that you would want to come back to.
01:21:47.618 --> 01:21:47.877
Yeah.
01:21:48.438 --> 01:22:05.194
I was just going to say about helping people on the Facebook site, somebody was asking about tithing and saying she doesn't want to pay it anymore because of where the church is sending it and keeping it and blah, blah, blah, but has been indoctrinated her whole life that it's your fire insurance and your life will fall apart.
01:22:05.635 --> 01:22:07.596
And she's saying, like, how do people navigate this?
01:22:07.737 --> 01:22:08.637
What, like, how...
01:22:08.801 --> 01:22:13.029
So I actually replied to her saying, well, we stopped paying tithing a long time ago.
01:22:13.729 --> 01:22:16.795
And my husband now earns three times more than he did when we were in the church.
01:22:17.576 --> 01:22:19.658
Like the world did not fall in.
01:22:20.180 --> 01:22:33.641
And she said, these are the kind of stories that people need to hear more to take away this fear that like good people have real fear about falling in their own hearts because, well, they might be fourth, fifth generation Mormons.
01:22:33.702 --> 01:22:34.603
It's all they've ever known.
01:22:35.304 --> 01:22:36.086
And they're scared.
01:22:36.641 --> 01:22:39.405
You know, they're scared to do things, to take steps.
01:22:39.485 --> 01:22:42.189
And she says, this is what people need to hear.
01:22:42.229 --> 01:22:43.730
The world does not fall in.
01:22:43.770 --> 01:22:52.903
The sky does not fall in when you're not being completely obedient like we were told to be, which brings us background to the prophets and things that they're asking us to do.
01:22:52.922 --> 01:22:56.287
So, yeah, I hope it does help somebody, you know.
01:22:57.309 --> 01:23:00.033
Helps them to stay or leave or be happy.
01:23:00.854 --> 01:23:01.715
Yeah, happiness.
01:23:01.755 --> 01:23:03.917
That's what we all want in life is happiness.
01:23:04.078 --> 01:23:04.158
Yeah.
01:23:05.025 --> 01:23:12.454
Andy, Caroline, on behalf of our listeners, I want to thank you both for coming on and having this conversation.
01:23:12.814 --> 01:23:15.257
And on a personal note, it's so good to see you both.
01:23:16.238 --> 01:23:18.481
Our family and I love you dearly.
01:23:18.681 --> 01:23:19.802
You mean so much to us.
01:23:20.344 --> 01:23:21.345
We know you personally.
01:23:21.385 --> 01:23:27.452
Your story connects with me in a different way because I know you both.
01:23:28.073 --> 01:23:28.913
You're wonderful people.
01:23:28.953 --> 01:23:29.675
You're kind.
01:23:29.715 --> 01:23:30.536
I've served with you.
01:23:30.555 --> 01:23:32.158
I've seen the service that you've given.
01:23:32.930 --> 01:23:33.990
I can vouch for it.
01:23:34.332 --> 01:23:35.854
You gave everything, everything.
01:23:36.194 --> 01:23:37.737
I was there with you side by side.
01:23:38.597 --> 01:23:41.161
And, you know, I know you bless the lives of many.
01:23:41.282 --> 01:23:44.166
And I know this will help so many as well.
01:23:44.426 --> 01:23:49.412
And that's the point of the podcast is to share our experiences openly and honestly.
01:23:49.432 --> 01:23:54.739
Sometimes we make ourselves vulnerable, you know, when we share our stories.
01:23:54.800 --> 01:24:01.349
But good can come from that, you know, by opening up and sharing, you know, our difficulties and challenges and the questions and doubts that we have.
01:24:01.890 --> 01:24:04.974
it will connect with others who are going through the same experience.
01:24:04.993 --> 01:24:06.475
So I want to thank you sincerely so much.
01:24:07.356 --> 01:24:11.981
Jim, I want to thank you as well for your always valuable contribution.
01:24:12.002 --> 01:24:21.313
I always learn, I feel like an apprentice, and Jim's the supreme high lord commander of the universe.
01:24:21.453 --> 01:24:21.774
I learn...
01:24:22.494 --> 01:24:24.197
You're the leader, Ian.
01:24:24.256 --> 01:24:27.801
