ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Your sweat rate isn't one number—it's a pattern.
The amount you sweat can change dramatically depending on your sport, intensity, temperature, humidity, environment, and individual physiology.
So why are we still asking, “How much should I drink per hour?” as if there's one answer that works every time?
In this episode of Find Your Edge, Coach Chris Newport breaks down how to understand your individual sweat-rate patterns and use them to make better hydration decisions.
You'll learn why:
- Running, cycling, swimming, and indoor training can produce different sweat rates
- One hot-weather sweat-rate calculation isn't enough
- Fueling and hydration need to work together
- Your training partner's hydration strategy may not work for you
- Sweat rate and sweat sodium are different pieces of the puzzle
- Tracking several data points can help make hydration more predictable
Plus, Chris introduces Hydration Edge, the new app designed to help endurance athletes turn their own sweat-rate data into personalized hydration plans.

00:00:56.269 --> 00:00:58.909
Hello and welcome back to the Find Your Edge podcast.
00:00:58.990 --> 00:01:09.230
I am your host, Coach Chris Newport, and today's episode will be a short one, but also I've got a treat for you guys, and I'm super excited to announce it.
00:01:09.390 --> 00:01:12.829
And it relates to sweat rate.
00:01:12.989 --> 00:01:19.789
So one of the questions I get all the time is why should I do a sweat test when I already know my sweat rate?
00:01:20.269 --> 00:01:25.069
Well, your sweat rate isn't a number, it's a pattern.
00:01:25.629 --> 00:01:31.949
So for example, you could lose a third of a liter on an easy cool run.
00:01:32.109 --> 00:01:40.750
You could lose over a liter on a moderate bike ride, and you could lose far over a liter and a half during a hot race.
00:01:41.069 --> 00:01:45.150
Same athlete, different sport, intensity, and environment.
00:01:45.390 --> 00:01:47.310
And that doesn't mean it's bad data.
00:01:47.469 --> 00:01:48.750
That's your data.
00:01:48.990 --> 00:01:53.949
Your body is responding predictably to what you're asking it to do.
00:01:54.269 --> 00:01:56.829
So what actually creates this pattern?
00:01:56.990 --> 00:02:00.669
And I have this conversation so many times over and over again with athletes.
00:02:00.750 --> 00:02:02.189
So I want to make sure that this is clear.
00:02:02.349 --> 00:02:03.949
Well, number one, it could be sport.
00:02:04.109 --> 00:02:13.150
Just like I was telling you, you are more likely to have a higher sweat rate running than you are for biking, for example, or swimming, for example.
00:02:13.469 --> 00:02:15.229
Intensity, that's a clear one.
00:02:15.389 --> 00:02:21.229
The harder you go, the higher your core temperature, and the higher your sweat rate.
00:02:21.469 --> 00:02:29.469
So an easy run for the same amount of time will be a lower sweat rate than a fast hard run.
00:02:30.189 --> 00:02:31.949
Same thing with temperature.
00:02:32.109 --> 00:02:36.189
And of course, we're all experiencing this, these higher temperatures.
00:02:36.509 --> 00:02:48.909
But if you go out for a run when it's 30 degrees Fahrenheit versus 80 degrees Fahrenheit, obviously your sweat rate is going to be different, which relates to the humidity, which in turn is the dew point.
00:02:49.229 --> 00:02:54.109
So, in other words, the lower the dew point, the lower the sweat rate, the higher the dew point, the higher the sweat rate.
00:02:54.270 --> 00:02:58.750
The lower the intensity, the lower the sweat rate, the higher the intensity, the higher the sweat rate.
00:02:58.909 --> 00:03:01.629
And even there's some individuality within sports.
00:03:01.789 --> 00:03:11.789
So for example, I had an athlete who his sweat rate was much higher inside on his indoor bike trainer versus cycling outside.
00:03:12.189 --> 00:03:19.629
He added a fan, so increased the convection in his indoor trainer, and his sweat rate went down.
00:03:19.870 --> 00:03:21.949
So that is going to make a difference.
00:03:22.109 --> 00:03:24.989
And then also just general individual physiology.
00:03:25.229 --> 00:03:38.429
You know that you have been on a bike ride or on a run with friends of yours, and um one person is literally just absolutely drenched, and the other person looks like they barely did any work.
00:03:38.669 --> 00:03:47.389
So there is individual physiology and individual variation for sweat rate, just like there is for eye color and skin color.
00:03:47.629 --> 00:03:50.189
So this isn't just about your Iron Man.
00:03:50.590 --> 00:03:58.349
It could also be like, I challenge you, go out and mow your lawn for 90 degrees for 90 minutes in Raleigh in July.
00:03:58.429 --> 00:03:59.789
And of course, you're going to be sweating.
00:03:59.870 --> 00:04:03.709
And in fact, you can add that in as your quote unquote sport.
00:04:04.030 --> 00:04:09.549
Your body doesn't say, oh, this isn't, you know, a scheduled workout and training peak, so it doesn't count.
00:04:09.629 --> 00:04:11.310
It absolutely counts.
00:04:11.549 --> 00:04:18.509
So the question becomes what does my body tend to do under these conditions?
00:04:18.910 --> 00:04:29.629
And once you accumulate enough of your own observations, enough of your own data, hydration becomes way less mysterious and so, so, so predictable, you guys.
00:04:29.870 --> 00:04:40.269
So let me give you an example of a really cool research study that just came out, 2026 uh journal of applied physiology.
00:04:40.829 --> 00:04:46.430
And what it said, it took nine trained, now granted this is a small, small study, but hang with me here.
00:04:46.590 --> 00:04:55.949
Nine trained males, cyclists and triathlete, they did 160 minutes of cycling at 50% of their peak power in in sort of moderate conditions.
00:04:56.269 --> 00:04:59.150
So not hot, probably just indoor conditions.
00:04:59.389 --> 00:05:09.389
They consumed the same amount of carbohydrates, so 60 grams per hour of glucose in both trials, but they changed up their fluid availability.
00:05:10.110 --> 00:05:16.590
So for the first time that they did the study, they intentionally dehydrated them.
00:05:16.750 --> 00:05:21.310
And then the second time they did it, they made sure that they were what's called uhydrated.
00:05:21.629 --> 00:05:26.590
So not losing an excessive amount, basically staying hydrated.
00:05:27.310 --> 00:05:36.350
So an interesting takeaway that they found is that the dehydrated condition resulted in a 2.8% body mass loss.
00:05:36.510 --> 00:05:41.390
And typically in the research, we see that about 2% is where performance losses start to occur.
00:05:41.629 --> 00:05:50.430
Compared with they only lost 0.2% when they were trying to keep them e-hydrated or sort of neutral from a hydration perspective.
00:05:50.910 --> 00:05:56.430
However, so again, carbohydrate intake did not change.
00:05:56.750 --> 00:05:58.830
Fluid did change.
00:05:59.310 --> 00:06:12.430
The amount that they were able to send to their working muscles of those carbohydrates was 16% lower in the dehydrated trial.
00:06:12.670 --> 00:06:15.870
Like that's that's kind of like mind blowing.
00:06:16.030 --> 00:06:17.390
So think about that.
00:06:18.189 --> 00:06:25.950
We spend so much time arguing over whether this athlete needs 60 or 75 or 90 grams of carbs or 100 grams or 120.
00:06:26.590 --> 00:06:36.350
But fueling, which I think of as carbohydrates, so those getting to the muscles, and hydration, which I think of as fluid and electrolytes, are they different processes?
00:06:36.510 --> 00:06:37.710
Yes, slightly.
00:06:37.950 --> 00:06:39.470
But do they go together?
00:06:39.790 --> 00:06:40.510
Absolutely.
00:06:40.670 --> 00:06:52.270
And this was such an interesting study to confirm that is that yes, you can get all the gels you need and all the carbohydrates that you need or are quote unquote prescribed.
00:06:52.430 --> 00:06:59.790
But if you're getting your fluid and hydration wrong, then what does it matter?
00:07:00.110 --> 00:07:00.510
Right.
00:07:00.830 --> 00:07:13.150
So again, we can't necessarily apply that principle to everyone, but in that study, it's such an interesting way of looking at things to say, oh, these are, these do go together.
00:07:13.230 --> 00:07:27.230
And again, just to piggyback on that, that 16% in that very specific study has to be further researched for females, for different populations, for different intensities, for different sports.
00:07:27.470 --> 00:07:32.430
This was very specific looking at male set of a small cohort.
00:07:32.990 --> 00:07:41.550
Regardless, knowing your sweat rate as a pattern is going to give us incredibly valuable information.
00:07:42.110 --> 00:07:51.150
And even more importantly, knowing the sweat test or your sweat content gives us even more data to understand you and your body.
00:07:51.310 --> 00:08:07.629
So I want to tie this all together into this central concept of it's important to measure, log, understand your pattern to be able to predict your hydration and then actually execute on it.
00:08:07.870 --> 00:08:15.470
So doing one hot run in the summertime is not enough to tell you what's going to happen in December.
00:08:15.790 --> 00:08:24.670
One cool ride doesn't necessarily in October doesn't necessarily predict what you're gonna move, what you're gonna lose in July.
00:08:24.910 --> 00:08:29.310
So it's important to collect your data and you don't necessarily see a lot of data.
00:08:29.470 --> 00:08:39.470
Again, once you start to collect at least, let's say, three to five data points per sport, especially for traffics, we got a lot of sports going on, and that's fine.
00:08:39.710 --> 00:08:55.710
But understand your patterns, and you don't have to necessarily do this all the time, but just enough to understand how your body performs across different sports, across different intensities, and across different conditions and even durations.
00:08:56.350 --> 00:09:12.830
So instead of asking how much should I drink, the better question is to say, what does my body typically require when I do a certain sport for a certain amount of time at a certain intensity in certain conditions?
00:09:12.990 --> 00:09:17.069
So that's a completely different level of decision making.
00:09:17.309 --> 00:09:24.429
And if your head just exploded just a little bit, that's literally why we built a brand new app.
00:09:24.590 --> 00:09:26.830
And it is out and on the market.
00:09:26.909 --> 00:09:27.710
I cannot believe it.
00:09:27.789 --> 00:09:30.349
I feel like I just birthed a new baby, you guys.
00:09:30.429 --> 00:09:31.549
It's crazy.
00:09:31.870 --> 00:09:36.669
So I had been operating for so long in spreadsheets.
00:09:36.829 --> 00:09:59.629
And for every person who came through the door, who did a home sweat testing kit, who did a sweat test in our office, was always and still do do a one-on-one session with them to actually translate that information and help them build their fueling and hydration plan based on their unique GI conditions, based on their unique races, et cetera.
00:10:00.269 --> 00:10:09.469
But part of that was showing them this massive spreadsheet that just literally grew legs and had all these different it was just overwhelming.
00:10:09.709 --> 00:10:13.789
So that's when I finally said it's time that we turn this into an app.
00:10:14.189 --> 00:10:15.709
So it's super easy.
00:10:15.870 --> 00:10:23.549
In fact, I'm gonna show you what it looks like if you are watching on YouTube so that you can actually see it.
00:10:23.789 --> 00:10:24.750
Here it is.
00:10:24.909 --> 00:10:28.269
It's called the Hydration Edge, personalized hydration plans.
00:10:28.509 --> 00:10:32.189
Right now, it is available exclusively for Apple devices.
00:10:32.269 --> 00:10:41.709
So hang tight, all you Android users, because yes, I am also an Android user, so it feels a little weird that um I can only use this right now on my iPad.
00:10:42.029 --> 00:10:44.669
But as you can see here, this is how you find it.
00:10:44.829 --> 00:10:59.309
So you know exactly how much you sweat, you can predict your needs before you train, before you race, you can dial in your fluid and sodium needs, and it's super easy, built exactly for endurance athletes.
00:10:59.549 --> 00:11:14.429
So that is officially on the market to help you simplify your hydration needs by simplifying your sweat rate and understanding it as a pattern.
00:11:16.429 --> 00:11:28.669
Okay, so it's just gonna make things so much easier because once you unlock your own data, you have this amazing framework for hydration, no matter what you're doing.
00:11:28.909 --> 00:11:32.269
Let's say you do an Iron Man and then you're like, heck no, I never want to do that again.
00:11:32.429 --> 00:11:34.269
Now I want to do ultra runs.
00:11:34.509 --> 00:11:36.429
Okay, you're gonna have that information.
00:11:36.669 --> 00:11:40.750
Or maybe you want that information for going out and mowing the lawn.
00:11:40.990 --> 00:12:18.429
However, it is that you're gonna be doing your sport, whether it be running, soccer, swimming, cycling, training in the heat, playing basketball, again, even mowing the lawn, no matter what it is, then you will have your data unlocked so that you can see your patterns beautifully and make it so much easier without making yourself go crazy of, okay, well, now I'm gonna be doing this marathon in Chicago in the middle of October, but then I'm also going to do a sprint triathlon in the middle of summer in North Carolina or Florida.
00:12:18.589 --> 00:12:19.469
You're gonna have all that.
00:12:19.629 --> 00:12:23.469
You're gonna have all that data already and unlocked for you.
00:12:23.549 --> 00:12:30.909
So you simply say, This is what I'm doing, where I'm doing it, how hard I'm gonna go, and boom, it's gonna appear right there.
00:12:31.069 --> 00:12:32.349
It's gonna be awesome.
00:12:32.669 --> 00:12:37.309
So your hydration strategy shouldn't come from what your training partner drinks.
00:12:37.389 --> 00:12:45.870
Because you guys, we've talked about this before on another podcast that I've done, is it's oftentimes not the product.
00:12:46.269 --> 00:12:54.269
But in our heads, we're like, well, this doesn't seem to be working for me as optimally as that person seems to be operating.
00:12:54.429 --> 00:12:55.709
So maybe it's their product.
00:12:55.870 --> 00:12:59.870
And sure, maybe it is partly the product that they are doing.
00:12:59.949 --> 00:13:02.029
But again, it's so individual.
00:13:02.429 --> 00:13:11.949
So your hydration strategy shouldn't come from what your training partner drinks or what's even printed on the side of a bottle, or generic ounces per hour recommendation.
00:13:12.110 --> 00:13:13.309
I get that question so much.
00:13:13.389 --> 00:13:24.349
And I've gotten to the point where I do not feel comfortable recommending general sports drinks or general amount to consume per hour because we are all so vastly differing.
00:13:24.750 --> 00:13:38.029
We have had people who have sweat, their sweat content is as low as eight to 10 milligrams per ounce of sweat versus somebody who's 80 plus milligrams per ounce.
00:13:38.189 --> 00:13:45.309
Like that that's just such a massive gap that it becomes hard for me to say, oh, everybody should drink X product.
00:13:45.469 --> 00:13:46.829
Do we all need to stay hydrated?
00:13:46.990 --> 00:13:47.230
Yes.
00:13:47.389 --> 00:13:55.069
But we all need to understand, especially if you're an endurance athlete, your sweat rate pattern and your sweat rate content.
00:13:55.469 --> 00:13:58.509
So your body is already giving you this data.
00:13:58.829 --> 00:14:04.110
You just need to capture it in order for the pattern to become clear.
00:14:04.349 --> 00:14:09.549
And once you know that pattern, again, hydration edge app will give it to it, give it to you.
00:14:09.629 --> 00:14:13.789
You can literally stop guessing and you can start that planning process.
00:14:13.949 --> 00:14:16.669
So you don't have to stress over spreadsheets anymore.
00:14:16.829 --> 00:14:18.110
You can enter in.
00:14:18.429 --> 00:14:21.469
Here's where I'm racing, here's what I'm doing.
00:14:21.709 --> 00:14:24.909
And then the app will say, This is how much you need per hour.
00:14:25.149 --> 00:14:31.230
So Hydration Edge is officially live, and I could not be more excited to finally get this tool in your hands.
00:14:31.389 --> 00:14:39.549
So if you head on over to the Apple store and search for Hydration Edge, we will also link to it below so that you can get your hands on it as well.
00:14:39.949 --> 00:14:46.589
For those of you who have had a sweat test done with us, you will get a special gift by email.
00:14:46.750 --> 00:14:49.389
And if you don't hear from me, you can always message me in the portal.
00:14:49.469 --> 00:14:56.829
You can reach out to us on our website or via socials at the endurance edge and make sure that you get your prize as well.
00:14:56.990 --> 00:14:58.589
Because I want this in your hands.
00:14:58.750 --> 00:15:05.629
I want you to be able to make this so easy that hydration and fueling is no longer even a question.
00:15:05.870 --> 00:15:18.349
You know your data, the app knows your patterns and can literally tell you exactly what you need, no matter what training event you're doing, no matter what racing you're doing, and no matter if you're mowing the lawn, y'all.
00:15:18.589 --> 00:15:20.349
So I hope this episode was helpful.
00:15:20.429 --> 00:15:24.269
I'm so excited for you to get your hands on the hydration edge app.
00:15:24.909 --> 00:15:27.709
And I'm listening to all of your feedback.
00:15:27.949 --> 00:15:31.870
So send me, send me, send me as much feedback as possible.
00:15:32.029 --> 00:15:36.829
I'm gonna get me and my new intern on this to continually add more and more products.
00:15:36.990 --> 00:15:40.589
It already has over 200 different fueling and hydration products in it.
00:15:40.829 --> 00:15:43.549
Doesn't mean that one is superior than the other.
00:15:43.709 --> 00:15:46.990
It just means that there is one or two or several.
00:15:47.069 --> 00:15:53.469
There's even recipes in there, you guys, on how to make your own gels, how to make your own sports drinks, and how to make it all work for you.
00:15:54.269 --> 00:16:01.469
But we are doing our best to give you the right products for the right sport in the right intensity.
00:16:01.709 --> 00:16:03.789
So excited for you guys to try this out.
00:16:03.870 --> 00:16:05.149
Let me know what you think of it.
