00:00:01.217 --> 00:00:16.617
Hello and welcome to another episode of Inside Out.
00:00:17.257 --> 00:00:22.403
My name is Jim Bennett and I am here with the Yuletide Ian Wilkes.
00:00:22.743 --> 00:00:23.545
How are you, sir?
00:00:24.385 --> 00:00:26.187
I am feeling very Christmassy today.
00:00:26.268 --> 00:00:27.410
I'm excited about Christmas.
00:00:28.097 --> 00:00:33.143
Looking forward to spending time with family, friends and taking time off work.
00:00:34.045 --> 00:00:42.994
A few days doing nothing, which I think is quite therapeutic and really excited about spending time over Christmas.
00:00:43.456 --> 00:00:44.496
Are your kids coming home?
00:00:45.298 --> 00:00:50.865
Yeah, we all kind of regroup and they're all coming here, which is traditional.
00:00:51.484 --> 00:00:55.090
And we kind of hang out, play games, have fun, eat too much.
00:00:56.161 --> 00:01:00.246
Dance, you know, everything apart from alcohol.
00:01:00.286 --> 00:01:01.908
We don't do alcohol in the house.
00:01:02.570 --> 00:01:02.969
All right.
00:01:03.070 --> 00:01:06.234
We don't either, but we're not going to be at the house.
00:01:06.655 --> 00:01:11.760
So this Christmas, we're flying to Cabo San Lucas in Mexico.
00:01:12.742 --> 00:01:12.903
Oh, nice.
00:01:12.923 --> 00:01:19.331
We decided, you know, we can play Santa Claus or we can get, because now our family's starting to scatter.
00:01:19.471 --> 00:01:22.254
My oldest daughter lives in Milwaukee.
00:01:22.655 --> 00:01:24.938
She's just started residency as a doctor.
00:01:25.825 --> 00:01:31.591
And my second oldest daughter lives in Southern California, my old stomping ground.
00:01:31.632 --> 00:01:36.317
She's getting a doctorate at the University of Southern California, which is also my alma mater.
00:01:36.378 --> 00:01:39.240
But so we haven't seen either one of them for quite some time.
00:01:40.742 --> 00:01:43.146
And it's going to be really delightful to have them here.
00:01:43.365 --> 00:01:53.216
And they're all showing up and then we're all hopping on a plane and we're spending a week in the sun, which makes us very happy because it's starting to get pretty cold here.
00:01:53.376 --> 00:01:54.037
Although it's not...
00:01:54.658 --> 00:01:55.978
It's not all that bad yet.
00:01:56.060 --> 00:01:58.542
We've had a couple of snowstorms, but it's been all right.
00:01:58.862 --> 00:02:02.727
Have you ever done some kind of big travel with your family before?
00:02:03.847 --> 00:02:04.588
We have, yeah.
00:02:04.649 --> 00:02:12.497
We normally stay at home at Christmas time, but we've traveled lots of different places around the world, U.S., parts of Europe.
00:02:13.438 --> 00:02:14.039
We've been to St.
00:02:14.080 --> 00:02:17.223
Lucia, the Caribbean, or Caribbean.
00:02:17.263 --> 00:02:22.849
So, yeah, as the kids get older, well, the three kids, they've moved on now.
00:02:23.490 --> 00:02:24.711
in terms of getting their own place.
00:02:25.231 --> 00:02:32.760
So in the next few years, we plan to do a lot more traveling and we'd love to do a Mexico trip over Christmas.
00:02:33.260 --> 00:02:33.961
That's the plan.
00:02:34.102 --> 00:02:36.044
So we should coordinate next time.
00:02:36.465 --> 00:02:37.746
We should coordinate for
00:02:37.966 --> 00:02:38.045
sure.
00:02:38.067 --> 00:02:40.549
Next time the Wilkses are heading to Mexico, the Bennetts.
00:02:41.389 --> 00:02:42.311
Let's do that.
00:02:42.671 --> 00:02:43.992
Yeah.
00:02:44.633 --> 00:02:47.116
And still no alcohol, but we'll see.
00:02:47.176 --> 00:02:47.877
We'll play it by ear.
00:02:48.638 --> 00:02:50.621
We can still have fun without alcohol, can't we?
00:02:50.941 --> 00:02:51.502
That's right.
00:02:52.162 --> 00:02:57.087
Well, we are recording this, so hopefully we will have a special guest joining us.
00:02:57.329 --> 00:03:00.513
I think we're going to leave the door open for that.
00:03:00.633 --> 00:03:05.558
So if that happens, we'll stop and we'll welcome the guest and introduce them.
00:03:05.598 --> 00:03:08.203
But I don't want to do that until he gets here.
00:03:09.084 --> 00:03:11.646
But I am recording this anyway.
00:03:12.127 --> 00:03:20.038
You may hear some echo because I am sitting in a hallway in the conference center in downtown Salt Lake City.
00:03:20.705 --> 00:03:29.074
I was sitting actually in the main conference center because it was very quiet until Rick Elliot, the tabernacle organist, decided to start practicing.
00:03:29.775 --> 00:03:31.036
And then it was way too loud.
00:03:31.075 --> 00:03:31.937
I can still hear him.
00:03:32.396 --> 00:03:36.622
He's still going over his organ solo that he's gonna be performing tonight.
00:03:37.201 --> 00:03:51.003
So tonight, this is being recorded the second night of the annual Tabernacle Choir Christmas program, which, you know, this venue seats 21,000 people.
00:03:51.965 --> 00:03:58.895
And over the past few years, because of COVID and also because of construction downtown, we haven't had a full house.
00:03:59.175 --> 00:04:03.943
And this is the first year since COVID that they've given out tickets to have a full house.
00:04:04.002 --> 00:04:10.492
So last night was our first concert, and it was just packed to the gills, and it was just absolutely delightful.
00:04:11.274 --> 00:04:16.982
And one of the interesting things about it, so every time, have you ever seen a Tabernacle Choir Christmas concert, Ian?
00:04:18.024 --> 00:04:18.163
No.
00:04:18.925 --> 00:04:19.365
You have not.
00:04:20.002 --> 00:04:31.740
Um, you know, it's so, so we record them every year and they release them on the public broadcasting system in the United States, uh, with a year delay.
00:04:31.899 --> 00:04:33.702
So last year's concert was recorded.
00:04:34.283 --> 00:04:41.454
It's on PBS this year, and we're recording this for PBS next year, but live and in person, it's just an amazing experience.
00:04:42.074 --> 00:04:48.283
We always get sort of a Broadway star to come and sing as a soloist with us.
00:04:48.684 --> 00:04:51.649
We've had Kristin Chenoweth and a number of other people you may have heard of.
00:04:52.129 --> 00:04:58.077
This one is a woman named Ruthie Ann Miles, who I had never heard of before she came in, but she's really talented and wonderful.
00:04:59.139 --> 00:05:05.249
But we also have another person who serves as a narrator for a story.
00:05:05.389 --> 00:05:07.271
We always tell this dramatic story.
00:05:07.312 --> 00:05:09.956
Two years ago, David Suchet.
00:05:10.096 --> 00:05:13.040
Have you ever seen Hercule Poirot?
00:05:13.100 --> 00:05:14.081
Yes.
00:05:14.497 --> 00:05:24.533
Agatha Christie, the guy who plays Hercule Poirot in the television series, two years ago told the story about essentially a guy who was the British Schindler.
00:05:25.896 --> 00:05:31.343
He found a way to rescue a lot of children and bring them to Great Britain during World War II.
00:05:31.545 --> 00:05:35.550
And that was the most moving story I had heard in all of this until this year.
00:05:36.752 --> 00:05:39.357
So I want to focus a little bit on this year's story.
00:05:40.017 --> 00:05:42.461
It's being told by a man named Dennis Haysbert.
00:05:43.266 --> 00:05:47.213
You would probably recognize his voice, maybe more than his face.
00:05:47.233 --> 00:05:50.117
He's the voice of Allstate Insurance.
00:05:50.158 --> 00:05:52.122
You're in good hands with Allstate.
00:05:52.723 --> 00:05:54.084
Big, rich, deep voice.
00:05:54.927 --> 00:05:57.310
And he was also on the television series 24.
00:05:57.812 --> 00:06:05.326
He played David Palmer, who at the time was the first black president of the United States, because this was out before...
00:06:05.985 --> 00:06:11.793
The United States actually had a black president, so he was a fictional black president, but that was his character.
00:06:12.233 --> 00:06:13.134
So you may recognize him.
00:06:13.153 --> 00:06:18.079
But he tells this story about a man in Kenya named Charles Muli.
00:06:19.261 --> 00:06:24.286
Charles Muli, at the age of six, was abandoned by his family.
00:06:25.247 --> 00:06:30.853
His family was deeply mired in debt, and they left him.
00:06:30.894 --> 00:06:34.398
They took the younger children and left, and he was the oldest child.
00:06:34.882 --> 00:06:38.665
But he was only six years old, and he was homeless.
00:06:39.646 --> 00:06:48.656
He went around looking for scraps, begging on the streets, and just was really struggling to survive.
00:06:48.697 --> 00:07:00.589
And at the age of 16, he was finally taken in as a house boy, essentially is how they describe it.
00:07:01.511 --> 00:07:02.192
And he...
00:07:05.153 --> 00:07:23.331
He ended up getting enough money to buy a car, which he turned into a taxi, and which he parlayed into sort of a taxi business, which he parlayed into a business that sold auto parts and all these other things until he essentially had this sort of small little empire.
00:07:24.172 --> 00:07:31.939
And by the time he was in his 40s, he had a monopoly on oil production in eastern Kenya.
00:07:32.620 --> 00:07:34.021
And he was a very, very wealthy man.
00:07:34.978 --> 00:07:40.624
And at one point, his car, some children came begging to him.
00:07:40.663 --> 00:07:43.406
And he turned them away.
00:07:43.447 --> 00:07:47.350
He said, I didn't have any money.
00:07:47.370 --> 00:07:49.392
I didn't have any time to feed them.
00:07:49.492 --> 00:07:50.653
And I didn't just want to give them money.
00:07:50.694 --> 00:07:51.574
I wanted to feed them.
00:07:52.295 --> 00:07:53.177
So he turned them away.
00:07:53.216 --> 00:07:55.899
And he came back and found that his car had been stolen.
00:07:57.442 --> 00:08:01.725
And he thought about it for a minute and said, geez, that's...
00:08:02.401 --> 00:08:08.310
You know, that wouldn't have happened if I had shown the kind of compassion to these children that was shown to me.
00:08:08.329 --> 00:08:17.002
He sort of forgotten himself and decided he needed to devote his time to helping children.
00:08:18.182 --> 00:08:20.045
And he had this sort of epiphany.
00:08:20.105 --> 00:08:21.648
They described his experience.
00:08:22.709 --> 00:08:24.711
This is when he sort of discovered religion.
00:08:26.153 --> 00:08:31.680
He was not a member and is not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
00:08:32.162 --> 00:08:36.068
But he is a Christian and he talks about this powerful conversion.
00:08:37.190 --> 00:08:45.003
And he talks about one night just sort of driving off into the wilderness and just wrestling with God.
00:08:45.163 --> 00:08:46.306
What is it you want me to do?
00:08:47.326 --> 00:08:56.783
And at one point, Dennis Haysbert, when he tells the narration, he just throws open his arms and he says, he's demonstrating this moment in Charles Moody's life.
00:08:56.842 --> 00:08:58.164
And he says, use me.
00:08:59.682 --> 00:09:04.168
And he said that the love of God just sort of came flooding into his life.
00:09:04.269 --> 00:09:08.817
And he realized what he had to do was sell everything he owned.
00:09:10.219 --> 00:09:13.062
And he said, we will never work for money again.
00:09:14.004 --> 00:09:20.995
And he sold everything he owned and created, he began just by going back out into the street.
00:09:21.836 --> 00:09:27.326
And he goes out into the street and he just calls, oye, oye, tush.
00:09:27.874 --> 00:09:29.635
the ragamuffins that are there.
00:09:29.676 --> 00:09:37.144
And he says, three children sort of scampered out of the darkness and he took them home and essentially adopted them.
00:09:38.486 --> 00:09:42.071
And then he started doing this on a nightly basis.
00:09:42.932 --> 00:09:47.937
And then he remodeled his home to accommodate dozens and then hundreds of children.
00:09:47.977 --> 00:09:53.283
And it became this sort of community center, but he considered it all a family that he was adopting this whole family.
00:09:54.024 --> 00:10:07.154
And today, There are thousands upon thousands of children that have been saved by the Mully Family Foundation in Kenya and in Tanzania.
00:10:07.174 --> 00:10:20.048
And the most moving part of it was that Charles Mully actually came to the concert and Dennis Haysbert was visibly moved, visibly emotional as they talked with each other about this experience.
00:10:20.970 --> 00:10:24.614
And this was moving for a number of reasons to me.
00:10:25.601 --> 00:10:28.885
One being the story itself is so compelling.
00:10:30.006 --> 00:10:34.753
But there were two things, aspects about it that were really interesting.
00:10:34.972 --> 00:10:51.833
One is, prior to 1978, prior to the revelation giving black people priesthood and temple blessings, this kind of a presentation by the church would have been unthinkable.
00:10:53.375 --> 00:11:06.312
And second of all, The fact that the church is highlighting somebody outside of what President Nelson describes as the covenant path.
00:11:06.952 --> 00:11:09.556
This is not somebody who is seeking church membership.
00:11:09.615 --> 00:11:15.842
This is not somebody who is seeking temple blessings, but this is somebody who is a disciple of Christ.
00:11:17.183 --> 00:11:18.645
And that is enough.
00:11:19.287 --> 00:11:21.928
That is enough for the church to be able to highlight this.
00:11:22.750 --> 00:11:40.716
And it's also, I think, really wonderful and reassuring that people like Dennis Haysbert, because I don't think Dennis Haysbert would have felt comfortable narrating something, being a spokesman for the church that was denying blessings to people of color.
00:11:41.378 --> 00:11:50.610
And I don't think Charles Mouly would feel comfortable affiliating with the church in any way if the church had not made progress along those lines.
00:11:51.351 --> 00:11:56.774
So it's just really inspiring to me to do this.
00:11:56.855 --> 00:12:02.423
And of course the experience, I'm just, Christmas to me is Christmas music.
00:12:04.547 --> 00:12:11.356
I've said many times that the way I feel the spirit most immediately, most powerfully is through music.
00:12:12.239 --> 00:12:19.269
And that's the wonderful blessing of serving in the Tabernacle Choir is that I get a chance to do that every week.
00:12:20.410 --> 00:12:22.715
And I get a chance to feel that every week.
00:12:22.934 --> 00:12:29.658
And it's always, wonderful, but there's something special about Christmas.
00:12:29.859 --> 00:12:33.143
Is Christmas music a big part of your celebrations?
00:12:33.263 --> 00:12:35.865
What is it that moves you at Christmastime?
00:12:36.726 --> 00:12:40.892
Music is a big part of my life in general.
00:12:41.513 --> 00:12:53.288
I've got such a wide range in terms of taste of music, from jazz to Swing, dance, jazz, music, right through to classical.
00:12:53.408 --> 00:12:59.096
I like even a little bit of gothic music, rock, pop, classical, of course.
00:12:59.135 --> 00:13:01.697
Got some classical music I just adore.
00:13:02.158 --> 00:13:04.902
But I always loved the Mormon Chronicle Choir.
00:13:05.322 --> 00:13:07.965
It's a professional choir, of course.
00:13:08.806 --> 00:13:15.754
And a big part of the church branding, you know, if you hadn't heard of, you know, with Mormons, you've probably heard of polygamy.
00:13:16.577 --> 00:13:20.562
You've probably heard of the Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith, and you'll have heard of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
00:13:20.682 --> 00:13:24.566
It's right up there in terms of what the church is known for.
00:13:25.086 --> 00:13:31.292
And the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, you can speak to this more than I can, it connects to people who are religious and non-religious.
00:13:31.533 --> 00:13:35.976
It gets you into places that are not necessarily religiously focused.
00:13:36.557 --> 00:13:44.044
All kinds of people listen and enjoy Mormon Tabernacle Choir music because it's not just church, it's professional.
00:13:44.184 --> 00:13:45.166
It's a professional choir.
00:13:45.889 --> 00:13:55.000
So we, we put on the, uh, some old CDs and, and, uh, uh, old LPs of the Bomb and Tablet Choir.
00:13:55.019 --> 00:14:02.027
We go, we go all school and we listen to that and we just enjoy, and we play the Christmas music and we enjoy that throughout Christmas.
00:14:02.908 --> 00:14:10.937
So music and, uh, Christmas carols and, and, uh, church related music is a huge part of our Christmas experience.
00:14:11.878 --> 00:14:12.317
Um, yeah.
00:14:12.802 --> 00:14:44.062
know as i was listening to you and and um there are wonderful stories of people in all with all backgrounds all kinds of uh backgrounds who have sacrificed um a lot in their life to give to some someone else to give to others to help others who are um feeble uh you know we talk about the scriptures talk about um heads hanging low and to those with feeble knees, the downtrodden, the poor and the needy.
00:14:44.883 --> 00:14:54.734
And there are many of those individuals around the world, sadly, who are in need, not just at Christmas time, but they experience that all through the year.
00:14:54.774 --> 00:15:36.739
And Christmas time is a time to remind us of who we are, what we have, the relationships that we have, to be grateful for what we have, and a time to be kinder to others to serve others to help others we should do this all these things and be like this all year round that's not always the case we get you know bogged down with work and commitments and you know we we come home from work and we we spend time with family before you know you're in bed and the days just roll past and and uh it's it's often difficult to find time to uh To help others.
00:15:36.859 --> 00:15:38.942
And that's what I think the church does really well, by the way.
00:15:38.961 --> 00:15:43.688
I think the church is extraordinary at providing opportunities to serve and to help others.
00:15:43.889 --> 00:15:45.412
And I do miss that.
00:15:45.652 --> 00:15:50.058
Although we've replaced that experience by serving in the community.
00:15:50.099 --> 00:15:57.990
Every year, there's a group of us go down to the homeless shelter in the town that we live.
00:15:58.572 --> 00:16:01.976
And we give food and we give time and we befriend as well.
00:16:02.017 --> 00:16:02.697
It's not just...
00:16:03.201 --> 00:16:06.085
provisions and food and hot drinks.
00:16:07.346 --> 00:16:14.153
We actually have conversations with individuals who are vulnerable or excluded or disadvantaged or homeless.
00:16:15.075 --> 00:16:17.837
And I think that's probably the most precious gift we can give.
00:16:19.359 --> 00:16:22.863
Yes, you can give money, you can give materials, which are really, really important.
00:16:23.484 --> 00:16:24.865
But I also think we can give a time.
00:16:24.884 --> 00:16:43.236
If you remember that video that was on the film strip years ago, certainly when I was investigating the church, it was the It was on a film strip that the missionaries used on a projector, propped up on some, not the Book of Mormon, because that was too sacred, but the Bible.
00:16:43.277 --> 00:16:44.399
They used to prop it up on the Bible.
00:16:45.200 --> 00:16:46.121
And it was all...
00:16:46.142 --> 00:16:53.833
Yeah, the Book of Mormon was a bit more sacred than the Bible back then, but it was a man's search for happiness.
00:16:53.854 --> 00:16:54.495
I remember that.
00:16:55.655 --> 00:17:00.043
And there were two main gifts that we had from that lesson.
00:17:00.082 --> 00:17:01.785
One was free agency.
00:17:02.562 --> 00:17:03.562
Another one was time.
00:17:03.582 --> 00:17:09.771
And we had the time to choose things, to make choices.
00:17:10.732 --> 00:17:20.066
And Christmas time is a time to reflect, a time to review our relationships, to renew relationships, a time to forgive.
00:17:20.086 --> 00:17:23.349
I've said earlier, we should be doing this all the time through the year and week.
00:17:23.931 --> 00:17:24.612
We often don't.
00:17:25.232 --> 00:17:28.958
But Christmas is a time to pause, reflect, reflect.
00:17:29.250 --> 00:17:30.230
Look at our relationships.
00:17:30.270 --> 00:17:31.051
Look at our friendships.
00:17:31.092 --> 00:17:32.453
Look at our family relationships.
00:17:32.974 --> 00:17:33.715
Look at our life.
00:17:34.076 --> 00:17:35.196
Be grateful for what we have.
00:17:35.978 --> 00:17:37.099
We've got time.
00:17:37.140 --> 00:17:39.962
Many of us have time.
00:17:40.022 --> 00:17:41.144
Some of us don't have time.
00:17:41.846 --> 00:17:42.445
We don't know.
00:17:42.465 --> 00:17:50.576
We might have had some bad news, and we may only have, sadly, a short time here on this planet, on this earth.
00:17:51.257 --> 00:17:58.105
There are people who are walking around feeling numb and feeling lost, feeling alone and feeling hurt.
00:17:58.561 --> 00:18:02.606
And we don't know their stories because it's not something that they advertise.
00:18:02.646 --> 00:18:07.373
You don't see often what's going on inside people's minds or people's hearts.
00:18:08.074 --> 00:18:14.643
But we have the time, and if we create it, we have the opportunity to help others and to serve others.
00:18:15.784 --> 00:18:22.827
On an earlier podcast, I shared my experience that I had with my– uh, embolism event that happened in May.
00:18:22.847 --> 00:18:30.396
It's, it's, um, it was a life changing experience for me and it was very close to me not being here.
00:18:30.977 --> 00:18:35.922
Um, but here I am, I'm on this podcast with you when it's December and I'm having another Christmas.
00:18:36.143 --> 00:18:39.486
And so I, uh, don't take things for granted as much.
00:18:40.708 --> 00:18:50.038
Um, and I think, uh, if there's a message here in a podcast, uh, a number of messages is to remind ourselves of what we have.
00:18:51.233 --> 00:18:56.760
We have life, and life, yes, it can be very challenging, and it could be challenging right now for many.
00:18:57.280 --> 00:18:59.723
But we have life, and we have opportunity.
00:18:59.865 --> 00:19:00.945
We can create opportunities.
00:19:02.288 --> 00:19:08.955
And we have people, whether we know it or not, who are there, who can help us and love us.
00:19:09.977 --> 00:19:14.021
Sometimes we need to be the ones to reach out to let people know that we need help.
00:19:15.584 --> 00:19:16.986
People can't read minds.
00:19:17.953 --> 00:19:22.038
They can't look at you and automatically know that you are in need.
00:19:22.240 --> 00:19:27.306
And sometimes it requires a little bit of humility and strength to say, hey, I need help.
00:19:28.488 --> 00:19:29.328
I'm struggling right now.
00:19:29.588 --> 00:19:30.009
I'm alone.
00:19:30.049 --> 00:19:32.051
I feel lost.
00:19:32.813 --> 00:19:35.696
And there's a huge amount of good out there, Jim, in the world.
00:19:36.018 --> 00:19:39.122
We've got a world of division, for sure.
00:19:39.182 --> 00:19:43.807
We're entering another period of division and conflict.
00:19:43.827 --> 00:19:45.309
2025 is...
00:19:46.082 --> 00:19:49.026
I think going to be another year of conflict.
00:19:49.086 --> 00:19:50.688
Hopefully we can resolve some of the big issues.
00:19:51.449 --> 00:19:52.951
We can't change things in the world.
00:19:53.511 --> 00:20:00.622
We can make a little bit of a difference locally, regionally, maybe certainly in our own lives and within that sphere of influence.
00:20:01.222 --> 00:20:06.609
We probably can't change some of the big issues happening in the world, but we can make a difference on a personal level.
00:20:07.010 --> 00:20:12.878
We can make someone feel good, do something for them, remind them of who they are, that they are children of God.
00:20:12.919 --> 00:20:14.801
I still believe that we're all children of God.
00:20:15.490 --> 00:20:25.865
And I still believe in the Christmas message that the churches continue to communicate each Christmas, that Christ lives and that he is real and that he died for a purpose.
00:20:25.925 --> 00:20:28.529
I still have a lot of...
00:20:28.549 --> 00:20:30.492
That still has a lot of hold on me.
00:20:31.394 --> 00:20:32.194
I still hope for that.
00:20:33.757 --> 00:20:36.181
The scriptures talk about, you know, we hope for a better world.
00:20:36.781 --> 00:20:39.846
I think we all want to live in a better world.
00:20:40.607 --> 00:20:41.489
And we want to...
00:20:42.786 --> 00:20:46.951
be free from the problems that we've got for a period of time, at least.
00:20:47.011 --> 00:21:01.352
And I think Christmas is a time where we can gather around, gather our friends and our family, and for a moment, maybe we could forget some of our problems, be grateful for what we have, think about Christ, who he was, his example.
00:21:01.952 --> 00:21:03.515
I mean, he sacrificed everything.
00:21:04.536 --> 00:21:08.300
He gave everything, and he gave his life, and I still believe that.
00:21:09.522 --> 00:21:11.425
And so...
00:21:11.970 --> 00:21:13.792
We have agency.
00:21:14.333 --> 00:21:15.153
We can choose.
00:21:15.454 --> 00:21:18.018
I think most people in the world have got agency to some extent.
00:21:18.459 --> 00:21:28.913
Sadly, there are people in the world, the country of the world, that take away agency, and that's terrible to live in a situation where you don't have much freedom of choice.
00:21:30.194 --> 00:21:33.700
But we have time as well, and we can do great things with that time.
00:21:34.661 --> 00:21:36.364
And we can help ourselves, and we can help others.
00:21:36.384 --> 00:21:38.346
And we get strength, I think, from helping others.
00:21:38.946 --> 00:21:51.042
If we're down and lost, I've learned that However hard it might seem, and not everyone can do this, I get that, but we can, to make ourselves feel good, we can actually do something for others and we get a good feeling from that.
00:21:51.584 --> 00:21:53.905
And the church does really well on that.
00:21:54.026 --> 00:22:00.531
You know, when we are in the service of our fellow men, we are in the service of God.
00:22:00.771 --> 00:22:04.214
I think it was in Mosiah, a scripture that you and I used to know off by heart.
00:22:04.976 --> 00:22:08.720
So music, have you seen his big, yeah, Mosiah 2.17.
00:22:08.940 --> 00:22:10.121
Music is a huge part of this.
00:22:11.394 --> 00:22:21.892
read the scriptures as a family, sharing the story about Jesus, going out and doing a service project, being there for a friend, listening, and I would say spending time.
00:22:21.932 --> 00:22:27.942
If you haven't got any money and you haven't got much to give, just give your time to someone.
00:22:28.221 --> 00:22:39.928
And if they feel better because you spent time with them and you lifted them up and you built them and they feel good, even for a moment, then To me, that's a great gift.
00:22:40.269 --> 00:22:41.309
I know that's very generic.
00:22:41.869 --> 00:22:54.243
I've not got any specific stories to share right now, but I think that's the message I would share with our listeners and anyone else who's out there.
00:22:55.684 --> 00:23:06.616
Well, what's compelling about it to me, I mean, it doesn't feel generic because it feels like you...
00:23:07.778 --> 00:23:21.019
continue to treasure the principles that you embraced when you were inside the church, and that you haven't lost any of that by being outside the church.
00:23:21.961 --> 00:23:32.428
And I think, you know, that Christmas is a great sort of reminder of the world beyond the church.
00:23:32.528 --> 00:23:37.814
I mean, when I was growing up, and again, we've said many times, your background was very different from mine.
00:23:38.875 --> 00:23:42.097
But when I was growing up, the church was essentially the whole world.
00:23:42.117 --> 00:23:45.942
I mean, the church was the haven from the world.
00:23:46.643 --> 00:23:53.329
And as you got closer to Christmas, the church, we had huge Christmas parties.
00:23:53.349 --> 00:24:04.105
I can remember one growing up where there was a woman who had all of the members bring their finest china to come and serve Christmas dinner.
00:24:04.326 --> 00:24:05.808
It was two days before Christmas.
00:24:06.690 --> 00:24:17.048
But it was just this huge event, huge elaborate sort of event, and it wasn't focused on anything specifically related to the church.
00:24:18.009 --> 00:24:20.734
It was just sort of community building.
00:24:22.786 --> 00:24:41.988
I feel like we've lost so much community within the church, but at the same time, we can sort of be insulated in the church and start thinking that the Ian Wilkeses of the world can't really experience Christmas if they're not inside.
00:24:42.909 --> 00:24:57.219
We start thinking that we have the kind of monopoly on all of the things that you described, all of the things that you described, hold dear to your heart, even though you no longer participate in the church.
00:24:58.279 --> 00:25:10.838
I think one of the biggest problems the church faces now is that we seem to be losing that sense of community.
00:25:11.760 --> 00:25:13.784
The church isn't the whole world for anybody.
00:25:14.104 --> 00:25:20.314
Here in the United States, they got rid of the Boy Scouting program and they replaced it with essentially nothing.
00:25:21.153 --> 00:25:26.762
And the church has gone down from three hours to two and everybody says, isn't that great?
00:25:26.823 --> 00:25:28.645
Not so many times in boring meetings.
00:25:29.867 --> 00:25:32.250
And I say that's great too.
00:25:32.330 --> 00:25:36.218
I don't like boring meetings, but there's something else that's been lost.
00:25:36.258 --> 00:25:37.680
We don't do the road shows.
00:25:37.779 --> 00:25:39.903
We don't do the camp outs.
00:25:40.002 --> 00:25:43.489
We don't do all of the things that we're building community.
00:25:43.608 --> 00:25:48.978
And we don't do the big Christmas celebrations, the big Christmas parties.
00:25:50.082 --> 00:25:51.904
and the big Christmas community building.
00:25:52.184 --> 00:25:58.454
And so one of the reasons why the Tabernacle Choir is so precious to me is that here it is.
00:25:59.317 --> 00:26:08.632
Here it is, the church saying, okay, yes, this is sort of community building, but we're building our community beyond the boundaries of the church.
00:26:09.553 --> 00:26:15.442
This Tab Choir concert is an outreach to the world.
00:26:16.423 --> 00:26:17.346
And it's not...
00:26:18.753 --> 00:26:20.135
it's not proselyting.
00:26:20.537 --> 00:26:24.403
You know, we've talked many times about how to fix the missionary program.
00:26:25.124 --> 00:26:30.593
And I think what we settled on was this idea that all missionaries should be service missionaries.
00:26:31.515 --> 00:26:36.883
That going out and knocking on doors in 2024 is a complete and total waste of time.
00:26:38.346 --> 00:27:01.679
But if people are attracted to the community, if people see Latter-day Saints out in the world, making a difference, feeding the homeless, doing what Charles Mouly did, reaching out to people in need, whether or not they come to church or ever come to church.
00:27:04.001 --> 00:27:07.105
That, I think, is the way you build the kingdom of God.
00:27:07.925 --> 00:27:25.477
I don't think you build the kingdom of God through theological bashing or through exclusivity or through any of the kinds of approaches that I think are part of the reason why the whole missionary effort has largely stalled throughout the world.
00:27:26.538 --> 00:27:43.602
I think if this spirit of Christmas, if the church were to embrace this year round, if the church were to put on these kinds of productions and reach out to people outside the boundaries of the church, well, what do you think that would do?
00:27:44.450 --> 00:27:46.172
What kind of impact do you think that would have?
00:27:48.115 --> 00:27:48.394
Huge.
00:27:50.638 --> 00:27:50.878
Yeah.
00:27:51.819 --> 00:27:52.181
Massive.
00:27:52.260 --> 00:27:55.404
I mean, it would be transformative for sure.
00:27:56.307 --> 00:27:58.869
Well, so I'm hopeful.
00:27:58.890 --> 00:28:03.056
I mean, you've said many times, I hope that the church is listening to our podcast.
00:28:03.135 --> 00:28:03.896
I don't know if they are.
00:28:03.936 --> 00:28:12.829
I know, but I just don't see any other way forward for the church.
00:28:13.377 --> 00:28:16.721
other than to embrace that same sense of community.
00:28:17.462 --> 00:28:30.959
I imagine what would happen if Moroni appeared to me in my bedroom right after President Nelson passed away and said, we're doing this differently.
00:28:30.979 --> 00:28:32.961
It's not going through seniority.
00:28:33.020 --> 00:28:37.946
We've decided that you are the guy we need to be the president of the church.
00:28:40.513 --> 00:28:44.938
I mean, or pick your ridiculous scenario.
00:28:45.798 --> 00:28:46.859
But I've thought, what would I do?
00:28:46.900 --> 00:28:56.368
If I were president of the church, if I were in charge, if I could see all the problems in the church, I can see the struggles and I can see the fact that we're really not growing.
00:28:58.131 --> 00:28:59.692
I would say, this is what I would do.
00:28:59.711 --> 00:29:02.234
I would lean into the community.
00:29:02.454 --> 00:29:03.935
I would lean into the service.
00:29:05.156 --> 00:29:25.883
And I would say, I would make the Latter-day Saints the kind of people that other people want to be like, that other people want to be with, that other people are grateful to have in their communities.
00:29:26.564 --> 00:29:33.123
Because the insular nature of the church sometimes means you can be in the community and you can not make a difference in the community.
00:29:33.243 --> 00:29:38.347
I mean, I can remember growing up, it's like, okay, well, you said, give them their time, give them your money.
00:29:38.749 --> 00:29:40.931
And I thought, well, the church does this so well.
00:29:41.030 --> 00:29:42.251
I pay my fast offerings.
00:29:42.853 --> 00:29:44.513
I pay my tithing, I pay my fast offerings.
00:29:44.614 --> 00:29:45.474
Isn't that enough?
00:29:46.096 --> 00:29:46.856
Isn't that doing it?
00:29:47.156 --> 00:29:49.699
Isn't that all that's asked of me?
00:29:50.861 --> 00:30:01.471
And the older I get, the more I realize just how tiny that kind of thinking is, how much more expansive That kind of thing.
00:30:01.891 --> 00:30:07.979
So as a thought experiment, I don't know if you've ever done this, Ian, but I'm going to put you on the spot here a little bit.
00:30:08.179 --> 00:30:09.019
So get ready.
00:30:10.261 --> 00:30:11.604
President Nelson has just died.
00:30:12.545 --> 00:30:15.648
Moroni comes to visit me and I told him, no, I'm busy.
00:30:15.689 --> 00:30:16.589
I got other things to do.
00:30:16.609 --> 00:30:18.071
I have to sort my socks.
00:30:19.032 --> 00:30:22.616
So Moroni decides, okay, well, who else should be the church?
00:30:22.817 --> 00:30:29.165
And then he appears in your bedroom and says, Ian, you're in charge of the church.
00:30:29.794 --> 00:30:31.395
You're the new president of the church.
00:30:31.615 --> 00:30:32.317
What do you do?
00:30:34.640 --> 00:30:36.041
I would accept it.
00:30:37.183 --> 00:30:37.523
All right.
00:30:38.325 --> 00:30:39.987
In an instant, in a heartbeat.
00:30:40.047 --> 00:30:45.493
And I say that without arrogance, hopefully, with some degree of humility, if that's possible.
00:30:46.055 --> 00:30:46.736
And I'll tell you why.
00:30:46.756 --> 00:30:48.577
I think I would make a big difference.
00:30:48.817 --> 00:30:49.439
And I'll tell you why.
00:30:50.200 --> 00:31:01.057
Because you, a few moments ago, have communicated what I think is one of the most important things Solutions, opportunities facing the church today.
00:31:01.597 --> 00:31:03.319
Look at the history of the church.
00:31:03.461 --> 00:31:06.704
Look at how the church is structured and organized.
00:31:07.385 --> 00:31:09.808
It's organized around a service model.
00:31:11.550 --> 00:31:14.654
You know, ministries, home teachers, visit teachers, it used to be called callings.
00:31:14.775 --> 00:31:21.222
I mean, it's established structure, organization, and processes are geared to serving.
00:31:22.163 --> 00:31:26.509
Every calling, every process is about helping others.
00:31:27.490 --> 00:31:36.300
It's misguided, I think, in regards to how it utilizes that structure in certain areas and in a certain way.
00:31:36.942 --> 00:31:48.635
But I think you just communicated the solution that I would take up and lead with, with strength, vigor, confidence, and unrelenting passion.
00:31:48.675 --> 00:31:56.645
Not because I'm Ian Wilkes and I might possess or not some unique, extraordinary magical skill, which I do not.
00:31:57.250 --> 00:32:00.433
But I think that's one of the most important answers, and that is to focus on service.
00:32:00.913 --> 00:32:01.555
And you've nailed it.
00:32:02.395 --> 00:32:04.479
Go out there with$150 billion.
00:32:04.598 --> 00:32:05.660
You can do a lot with that.
00:32:06.601 --> 00:32:08.222
You can go teaming and partnering.
00:32:08.262 --> 00:32:10.546
You can help the homeless, which is what Christ would do.
00:32:11.768 --> 00:32:13.028
Put that money to good use.
00:32:13.670 --> 00:32:14.730
Put that organization.
00:32:14.810 --> 00:32:17.355
Go team and partner with the churches, other charities.
00:32:17.755 --> 00:32:21.058
Take that small model, because the church does this to an extent.
00:32:21.640 --> 00:32:23.082
It's got helping hands.
00:32:23.521 --> 00:32:30.351
It goes into different countries of the world and helps with water distribution projects and clean drinking water.
00:32:30.671 --> 00:32:31.772
It does an element of that.
00:32:32.374 --> 00:32:36.219
I think the answer, one of the answers is to expand that exponentially.
00:32:37.460 --> 00:32:39.403
Do that across the United States.
00:32:40.064 --> 00:32:42.165
Do it in, you know, do it with your own members.
00:32:42.606 --> 00:32:49.095
Look at what you can do right now to help the most impoverished members, for example, right?
00:32:50.076 --> 00:33:04.123
But extend that like the examples of the stories that he gave, and take this extraordinary organization with all that wealth and power, and also the most important thing is the devotion, Jim, that members have in the church.
00:33:04.864 --> 00:33:15.855
The commitment, the testament, the devotion, the sacrifice, the extraordinary commitment and enthusiasm that the members have to help.
00:33:16.916 --> 00:33:17.758
That's the power.
00:33:18.402 --> 00:33:19.423
That's extraordinary power.
00:33:20.084 --> 00:33:24.750
Make that, broaden that power, distribute that power, scale it.
00:33:25.210 --> 00:33:27.633
I talk about scaling business operations in business.
00:33:28.294 --> 00:33:33.701
Scale the successes and expand it globally.
00:33:34.141 --> 00:33:46.777
And if the church did this, it would get more converts, not just about standing up and talking at a pulpit or general conference or reading a scripture or going to a meeting to talk about another meeting, which is...
00:33:48.066 --> 00:34:34.760
lots of wasted time right um put put it into action go do something mobilize all that resources and scale it and go team partner build that resources it will you know if your objectives are to expand the brand get more converts um strengthen the membership um you will achieve that if the if the bread and the listen to this um You will achieve greater things than you've done already if you focus most of the resources into expanding those service opportunities on a scale far, far, far greater than what they've done right now.
00:34:35.481 --> 00:34:45.452
So I would accept, before you even finish the question, and I would commit significant resources to that, and I promise you, because it's the right thing to do.
00:34:45.512 --> 00:34:45.914
It's easy.
00:34:46.626 --> 00:34:48.347
It's the right thing to do.
00:34:48.387 --> 00:34:53.052
And doing the right thing to do often always is it's there facing you.
00:34:53.411 --> 00:34:54.432
It's staring in your face.
00:34:54.914 --> 00:34:55.855
It's the right thing to do.
00:34:55.894 --> 00:34:56.976
It's simple.
00:34:56.996 --> 00:34:58.476
It's what Christ would want.
00:34:59.297 --> 00:35:00.278
You've got the organization.
00:35:00.298 --> 00:35:01.239
You've got the resources.
00:35:01.800 --> 00:35:05.623
And I can promise you, the church would potentially double in size.
00:35:06.063 --> 00:35:09.568
Even if people don't join the church, they'll think highly of it.
00:35:10.389 --> 00:35:13.331
And even if they don't get converts and you've blessed their lives, right?
00:35:13.351 --> 00:35:15.954
You've helped them or you've helped a friend or you've helped somebody.
00:35:16.257 --> 00:35:20.322
you've seen, you've been part of a project, that will stay with you forever.
00:35:20.342 --> 00:35:40.327
I think you've nailed, again, this is not the first time we've talked about this, this is a solution, not just to the problems that the church is facing, there's an opportunity to achieve all of the spiritual and service objectives of the church.
00:35:40.547 --> 00:35:49.795
If the church has got other objectives like financial, which it probably has, unfortunately, but it would generate more revenue as well.
00:35:49.835 --> 00:35:52.818
If you're looking at it from a business perspective, I'm sure it would.
00:35:53.239 --> 00:35:57.625
But the primary focus is to serve others, like what Christ did.
00:35:57.804 --> 00:35:58.405
That's the message.
00:35:59.688 --> 00:36:01.409
And that's what I would do.
00:36:01.751 --> 00:36:02.891
And I would take that mantle.
00:36:03.353 --> 00:36:07.057
I'd run with it for, well, it's a lifelong calling, so you can't release me.
00:36:07.713 --> 00:36:10.097
I'd be dead every day.
00:36:10.378 --> 00:36:16.525
I remember when Elder Oaks trained us that weekend, we had a conversation with him, and I've shared this with him before, I think.
00:36:16.565 --> 00:36:19.650
He said, what kind of presidency do you want to be?
00:36:19.690 --> 00:36:22.034
And we were reflecting on that.
00:36:22.894 --> 00:36:24.237
And I can't remember the answers we gave.
00:36:24.257 --> 00:36:28.141
And he also said, how do you want to be remembered as a presidency?
00:36:29.282 --> 00:36:42.112
And I thought about that, and I thought, well, for me personally, you know, be remembered as a bishop or a leader or a state presidency, It's that I was approachable, I listened, hopefully understood, and I did something.
00:36:43.472 --> 00:36:44.353
I did something to help.
00:36:45.195 --> 00:36:45.936
And I made a difference.
00:36:46.016 --> 00:36:53.324
And I did something physically, you know, action, that actually helped in some measure that person.
00:36:53.545 --> 00:36:54.867
I helped improve their life.
00:36:54.927 --> 00:36:58.431
I fixed a problem or I did something to help them or their family.
00:36:58.972 --> 00:37:00.172
And that's all I ever wanted.
00:37:00.333 --> 00:37:04.358
And to the other counselors, they were the same.
00:37:04.706 --> 00:37:05.266
They were the same.
00:37:05.306 --> 00:37:07.128
That's what they wanted as well.
00:37:07.570 --> 00:37:08.650
You know, we're on this planet.
00:37:08.891 --> 00:37:10.793
We talked about time and agency earlier.
00:37:11.315 --> 00:37:16.041
We're on this planet for a very short period of time in the history of the Earth.
00:37:16.242 --> 00:37:19.445
And, you know, 3 billion years, is it 3.8 billion years?
00:37:19.987 --> 00:37:21.047
Is that the universe?
00:37:21.469 --> 00:37:22.931
Is it 13 billion for the universe?
00:37:22.990 --> 00:37:25.434
I think the Earth is 3, 4 billion years old.
00:37:25.454 --> 00:37:26.795
The moon's about 3 billion.
00:37:27.376 --> 00:37:28.297
We are a...
00:37:28.802 --> 00:37:33.208
Just a fraction of a fraction of a fraction.
00:37:33.228 --> 00:37:42.885
Our life is just a tiny minuscule of a minuscule in that time span of the earth.
00:37:43.467 --> 00:37:50.077
We're here for extremely unfathomable, unimaginable short period of time to do something.
00:37:51.010 --> 00:37:56.295
to do good, to be good, to be the best, and do the best that we can to help others.
00:37:56.375 --> 00:37:59.217
I think happiness, it's key to happiness is serving others, for sure.
00:37:59.918 --> 00:38:05.423
And you know, when we die, and you and I are pushing 60, you know, I'm a little bit older than you, right?
00:38:06.204 --> 00:38:22.644
One day, I remember this was, I remember being in a discussion once, I'd only been out two weeks in Dumfries in Scotland, and my companion very boldly told somebody that, because they were rejecting the gospel, and he looked at me and said, to this person on the door.
00:38:22.664 --> 00:38:24.186
He said, one day you will die.
00:38:24.206 --> 00:38:27.713
I was like, why are you saying that?
00:38:28.172 --> 00:38:31.838
And this person looked quite, it was like an Elder Spencer moment, I think.
00:38:32.420 --> 00:38:34.483
And they looked quite shook up by that.
00:38:34.523 --> 00:38:37.487
And he said, you will be brought before God and you'll be held accountable.
00:38:37.827 --> 00:38:39.351
And I think it quite scared the person.
00:38:39.371 --> 00:38:45.500
But when I think about that, I think how fleeting life is.
00:38:45.701 --> 00:38:46.322
We will die.
00:38:46.978 --> 00:38:48.179
We will die one day.
00:38:48.199 --> 00:38:49.061
We're not going to live forever.
00:38:49.081 --> 00:39:05.742
And eventually, you know, after a few years of people, you know, a few weeks, months maybe, and if we're lucky, a few years of missing us and mourning us, those who have a memory of us eventually, and they will miss us, eventually they will die too.
00:39:06.722 --> 00:39:08.965
So those who have a memory of us will go.
00:39:08.985 --> 00:39:18.697
And eventually, if we do something great in the universe or great on the earth or something of some significance, We might be remembered in some small footnote somewhere.
00:39:18.978 --> 00:39:22.842
Hopefully the Inside Out podcasts are eternal.
00:39:22.882 --> 00:39:28.590
Hopefully we're eternalized with Inside Out podcasts, some evidence that we exist.
00:39:28.951 --> 00:39:32.335
But eventually, Jim, you and I will be forgotten.
00:39:34.137 --> 00:39:35.219
We might be a footnote.
00:39:35.259 --> 00:39:38.021
We'll be on some genealogy chart, a name.
00:39:38.262 --> 00:39:49.817
Jim Bennett, you're married to Laurel, kids, birthday, you know, date you died, born and died, maybe a little bit of information about what you did, but that's it.
00:39:50.878 --> 00:39:52.000
Maybe not much more than that.
00:39:52.780 --> 00:39:57.166
Your entire life into two sentences, if you're lucky.
00:39:57.847 --> 00:39:59.829
And that's it.
00:39:59.849 --> 00:40:03.855
And then those memories that people have of us will go when they die.
00:40:03.894 --> 00:40:11.143
And a hundred years from now, no one will remember me or you apart from a footnote.
00:40:11.184 --> 00:40:14.735
And even then they'll read it And then we'll be forgotten again.
00:40:14.775 --> 00:40:16.438
And we might come up again at some point.
00:40:16.958 --> 00:40:20.043
So life is very short.
00:40:20.603 --> 00:40:21.545
We have limited time.
00:40:21.565 --> 00:40:31.097
All the things that we've done will be written into one sentence or two sentences at some point in the future.
00:40:31.137 --> 00:40:34.342
If the podcast still exists, that's probably different.
00:40:34.382 --> 00:40:34.922
That might last.
00:40:35.463 --> 00:40:38.646
But what I'm saying is that we don't have much time.
00:40:39.668 --> 00:40:40.530
We're going to get forgotten.
00:40:41.282 --> 00:40:42.923
The universe is going to forget us.
00:40:43.385 --> 00:40:45.688
You know, from the universe perspective, we didn't even exist.
00:40:46.369 --> 00:40:48.030
Where's the evidence that we even existed, right?
00:40:48.931 --> 00:40:49.413
But we did.
00:40:49.432 --> 00:40:51.155
Here we are at this time.
00:40:51.175 --> 00:40:54.880
And we've got life and we can do something with that life.
00:40:55.541 --> 00:40:58.666
And we can decide how do we want to be remembered.
00:40:58.985 --> 00:41:01.088
So you asked me a very great question.
00:41:01.128 --> 00:41:03.311
You may not have expected the answer.
00:41:03.351 --> 00:41:03.731
I don't know.
00:41:03.751 --> 00:41:07.097
I would step up to that and do my very best.
00:41:07.737 --> 00:41:10.641
But I want to throw a question back to you and put you on the spot, if I may.
00:41:11.010 --> 00:41:11.590
Nice.
00:41:12.130 --> 00:41:19.820
I want to kind of throw the, you know, hit it back into your car and ask you, how does Jim Bennett want to remember Jim Bennett?
00:41:20.740 --> 00:41:23.583
How do you rather, sorry, let me call you for that.
00:41:23.764 --> 00:41:25.065
How do you want to be remembered?
00:41:25.686 --> 00:41:25.766
I've
00:41:25.786 --> 00:41:27.668
actually thought an awful lot about that question.
00:41:28.369 --> 00:41:37.798
So I think I have an answer ready for you because being remembered was much, much, much more important to me when I was younger.
00:41:38.360 --> 00:41:40.041
I wanted to be a world famous actor.
00:41:40.769 --> 00:41:46.496
And I remember thinking, okay, I'm going to get my big break, and I'm going to make it into the movies, and I'm going to make my mark.
00:41:47.197 --> 00:41:50.882
And it was, aha, this is what is really, really important to me.
00:41:51.903 --> 00:41:52.905
And that never happened.
00:41:53.826 --> 00:41:58.693
And I went through a period of disappointment and frustration that it hadn't happened.
00:42:00.454 --> 00:42:02.137
I sort of expected it to happen.
00:42:02.336 --> 00:42:05.981
I thought that's what God wanted to happen for me.
00:42:06.021 --> 00:42:09.326
And there's a lot of arrogance in that.
00:42:09.889 --> 00:42:15.898
I mean, there's a lot of, and then I sort of went through this idea of, well, then I don't matter at all.
00:42:16.838 --> 00:42:20.244
Then I'm completely worthless and maybe God doesn't even pay attention to me at all.
00:42:20.304 --> 00:42:22.266
And I sort of flip back and forth.
00:42:23.047 --> 00:42:39.809
But the thing that has given me, I think, if not the correct answer to your question, the answer that sits best with me, the thing that has given me that answer is my children.
00:42:41.090 --> 00:42:48.097
is, okay, I now recognize this is the world I'm leaving behind for them.
00:42:48.137 --> 00:42:56.288
And it doesn't matter if I'm not remembered as a huge star.
00:42:56.467 --> 00:43:00.893
I mean, the fact is, you said in 100 years, we'll all be forgotten.
00:43:00.913 --> 00:43:04.456
That includes Tom Cruise and...
00:43:05.121 --> 00:43:12.389
Brad Pitt and all these people who, okay, yes, these guys are a big deal and everybody knows who they are.
00:43:12.449 --> 00:43:15.152
Nobody's going to know who they are 100 years.
00:43:16.353 --> 00:43:17.094
They're just not.
00:43:17.135 --> 00:43:18.615
They're just not going to remember any of it.
00:43:18.916 --> 00:43:19.737
It doesn't matter.
00:43:20.798 --> 00:43:22.400
And you're right.
00:43:22.521 --> 00:43:26.083
When people die, their memories of you will die as well.
00:43:27.226 --> 00:43:43.137
But all I want is to know that I've raised children who have gone out into the world to be decent and kind and wonderful human beings.
00:43:44.440 --> 00:43:53.114
And if I do that, the likelihood that they do that with the next generation is, I think, fairly high.
00:43:53.155 --> 00:43:57.342
And that becomes your legacy.
00:43:58.463 --> 00:44:12.159
And so in 100 years, no one may remember me but they will remember their own parents who were parented by those decent kind people, parented by the decent kind people that I parented.
00:44:12.199 --> 00:44:16.586
And that will be the legacy I leave behind.
00:44:17.528 --> 00:44:23.757
So now I'm very comfortable with the idea of being forgotten.
00:44:24.519 --> 00:44:30.909
You know, I've run for office and at one point running for office was sort of that same sort of grab for glory.
00:44:31.585 --> 00:44:34.208
First time I ran for office was over 20 years ago.
00:44:35.170 --> 00:44:41.699
But even when I ran for office this last time, and of course I haven't won an election, so I'm not going to be running for office again.
00:44:41.719 --> 00:44:47.505
It was interesting because after I lost this last election, I went, okay, I'm never going to hold elective office.
00:44:48.788 --> 00:44:52.331
And if you told me that 20 years ago, I would have been crestfallen.
00:44:52.632 --> 00:44:56.597
I would have thought, oh no, oh no, this is how I make my mark.
00:44:57.762 --> 00:45:01.746
And now it was, I mean, after I lost this last election, it stung.
00:45:01.766 --> 00:45:15.925
It was just, I mean, losing an election is so hard, but within a day, maybe two days, I got this sense of relief.
00:45:17.067 --> 00:45:20.731
I got the sense of, I don't need to do this anymore.
00:45:21.351 --> 00:45:25.317
This isn't what defines my value as a human being.
00:45:25.922 --> 00:45:29.885
Jim Bennett has value whether or not he ever holds elective office.
00:45:31.067 --> 00:45:39.597
And that value comes from the impact I have, not just on my children, but on the people I can have an impact on.
00:45:39.757 --> 00:45:41.719
I'm always reminded, it's a cliche story.
00:45:41.778 --> 00:45:45.463
You know the story of the starfish throwing the starfish back?
00:45:46.443 --> 00:45:52.030
Two guys are walking along a beach and all of these starfish have washed up on the shore.
00:45:53.153 --> 00:45:55.996
and they're gonna die because they're out of the water.
00:45:57.119 --> 00:46:03.206
And so one of the men picks up one starfish and throws it back in the ocean.
00:46:05.047 --> 00:46:08.672
And the other one says, look at all of these starfish.
00:46:09.853 --> 00:46:11.755
How do you think you're ever gonna make a difference?
00:46:13.639 --> 00:46:15.641
That didn't make any difference at all.
00:46:15.661 --> 00:46:19.445
And he says, no, it made a difference to the one I threw back.
00:46:20.769 --> 00:46:24.036
And to me, that's what life essentially is.
00:46:24.817 --> 00:46:26.739
I can make a difference with a...
00:46:27.400 --> 00:46:32.570
I can't throw all of the starfish back into the sea, but I can throw one at a time.
00:46:33.170 --> 00:46:42.788
I can make a difference with the people that God has given, has placed in my path.
00:46:43.889 --> 00:46:44.811
And so...
00:46:46.626 --> 00:46:57.400
The older I get, it's really interesting because I really feared death much more when I was younger.
00:46:58.742 --> 00:47:01.746
I was really scared of what would happen when I die.
00:47:01.786 --> 00:47:07.994
And the church sort of alleviated some of that, but not all of it.
00:47:09.777 --> 00:47:14.847
But as the older I get, and as you point, pushing 60, I'm 56.
00:47:15.007 --> 00:47:16.829
I've got four more years till I'm 60.
00:47:17.329 --> 00:47:18.992
When I'm 60, they kick me out of the choir.
00:47:19.672 --> 00:47:22.155
Tabernacle choir, you age out at age 60.
00:47:22.394 --> 00:47:27.701
So they've already told me when I die in the choir.
00:47:29.643 --> 00:47:34.949
But the older I get, the closer I get to death, the less I fear it.
00:47:36.210 --> 00:47:43.438
The less I fear being forgotten because I can see the goodness in my children.
00:47:44.226 --> 00:47:51.653
I can see the impact my life has had and it's never gonna get huge accolades from anybody.
00:47:51.693 --> 00:48:02.204
It's never gonna be written up in a, you know, some kind of, I don't know if I'm even gonna be a footnote, but it doesn't matter.
00:48:02.244 --> 00:48:10.893
It doesn't matter because I can, and in accepting that, that's where the happiness is.
00:48:11.969 --> 00:48:18.840
not looking for the glory, not worrying about, geez, what I have now just isn't enough.
00:48:19.822 --> 00:48:26.530
Accepting what you have now, and that's sort of a Buddhist philosophy, just sort of letting it go.
00:48:26.552 --> 00:48:33.161
If you let it go, you appreciate what you still have.
00:48:34.342 --> 00:48:38.869
Every year, every Christmas is more special than the last.
00:48:39.746 --> 00:48:52.721
I mean, this time, I thought so many times, you know, now that my daughters have left home, my three sons are all in college, but they're all in college within a 50-mile radius of the house.
00:48:52.780 --> 00:48:55.903
They come back every Sunday for Sunday dinner.
00:48:56.864 --> 00:49:04.554
But this next week coming up is going to be the first time all of us have been together for almost a year.
00:49:05.894 --> 00:49:08.018
And I now...
00:49:08.673 --> 00:49:15.362
recognize how precious that is, how rare that is, how wonderful that is.
00:49:15.402 --> 00:49:28.777
And I also recognize a heightened sense of my own responsibility to help others who may not have that, who may not have the opportunity.
00:49:29.980 --> 00:49:39.798
And also, I feel like it's important, if God has called me to do anything, I mean, I think this podcast is is part of this idea.
00:49:39.818 --> 00:49:43.003
I remember Michelle Brady Stone talking about the borderlands.
00:49:44.204 --> 00:49:49.829
I think at Christmas time within the church, it's the people on the borderlands that are forgotten.
00:49:50.590 --> 00:49:59.621
The people who are on the edge, who are on the margins, who are just on their way out, or the people who have just left and are feeling that loss of community.
00:49:59.661 --> 00:50:03.806
I think it's essential we reach out to them.
00:50:04.289 --> 00:50:09.536
And I feel sort of called that that's the space where God wants me.
00:50:10.597 --> 00:50:19.266
And so hopefully if I'm going to be remembered by anybody at all, it will be that I was there on the borderlands.
00:50:19.465 --> 00:50:27.414
I was not there on the center stage, but I was doing everything I could to throw every starfish I could back into the sea.
00:50:28.235 --> 00:50:32.519
So do you have visions of glory?
00:50:32.539 --> 00:50:33.722
Are you hoping to be?
00:50:34.402 --> 00:50:42.778
Are you hoping that the Ian Wilkes Memorial Foundation and a big statue of you in the middle of Tiananmen Square...
00:50:42.800 --> 00:50:49.634
I don't know why I picked Tiananmen Square, but, you know, that's where big statues are.
00:50:50.576 --> 00:50:52.579
I'm hoping to be the next prophet.
00:50:52.619 --> 00:50:54.023
You just asked me what would I do with it.
00:50:55.065 --> 00:50:55.365
So I...
00:50:55.777 --> 00:50:57.340
I would rescue the church.
00:50:57.740 --> 00:51:02.349
But no, I've not got any big aspirations or ambitions like that.
00:51:03.710 --> 00:51:04.532
I'm where you are.
00:51:04.552 --> 00:51:05.634
I'm comfortable in my skin.
00:51:06.235 --> 00:51:10.382
You know, I've failed enough to know what failure is like, right?
00:51:10.541 --> 00:51:12.164
Learned from it, I think, mostly.
00:51:12.885 --> 00:51:15.389
As successors, you know, you taste the bitter with the sweet.
00:51:15.971 --> 00:51:16.490
Life is...
00:51:17.353 --> 00:51:21.418
You know that movie, I think it's called Parenthood, and it's with...
00:51:23.713 --> 00:51:24.755
Steve, what's his name?
00:51:24.815 --> 00:51:25.737
Steve Martin, yeah.
00:51:25.978 --> 00:51:26.818
Steve Martin, yeah.
00:51:26.838 --> 00:51:27.920
It's a great movie.
00:51:28.340 --> 00:51:30.224
A good movie to watch over Christmas.
00:51:31.186 --> 00:51:34.670
And, you know, life, the family relationships are not going so well.
00:51:34.851 --> 00:51:35.733
Remember the story.
00:51:35.773 --> 00:51:39.539
There's all kinds of problems across each relationship in that family.
00:51:40.119 --> 00:51:42.061
And him and his wife are arguing in the kitchen.
00:51:42.081 --> 00:51:46.268
I can't remember the details about what to do with the situation or one of the kids.
00:51:46.789 --> 00:51:49.414
And the grandma comes in and randomly...
00:51:49.858 --> 00:52:00.009
shares a memory of when she was younger that she was, um, used to go to the fairground rides when, um, she was younger and she went on the, uh, the roundabout, the carousel thing.
00:52:00.028 --> 00:52:00.188
Right.
00:52:00.809 --> 00:52:05.315
And she said it was okay, but it just, um, you know, it just goes round and round and round.
00:52:05.355 --> 00:52:05.934
That's all it does.
00:52:06.356 --> 00:52:08.739
And she said her favorite was the roller coaster.
00:52:10.280 --> 00:52:13.804
The roller coaster went fast and slow and up and down.
00:52:13.844 --> 00:52:15.505
And it was just thrilling.
00:52:16.034 --> 00:52:21.623
And eventually, in this scene in the movie, she then comes in, shares that experience, very random.
00:52:22.244 --> 00:52:23.425
They're both looking at each other.
00:52:23.465 --> 00:52:28.173
Steve Martin and the lady who's the actress playing his wife look at each other.
00:52:28.795 --> 00:52:36.806
And then they realize that all the challenges and problems they've got with the family is a roller coaster, essentially.
00:52:37.528 --> 00:52:38.911
And life is a roller coaster.
00:52:39.050 --> 00:52:40.673
We have successes, failures, failures.
00:52:41.346 --> 00:52:42.387
We achieve some things.
00:52:42.427 --> 00:52:44.048
We don't achieve other things, et cetera.
00:52:44.630 --> 00:52:45.692
And that's what life is about.
00:52:45.711 --> 00:52:47.273
It's about teaching us and humbling us.
00:52:47.634 --> 00:52:49.737
And teaching is those important values.
00:52:49.817 --> 00:52:52.039
And teaching is what's really important.
00:52:52.500 --> 00:53:04.494
And what's really important is family, friends, time, monetary things, not really important, station and position and titles and cars and houses.
00:53:04.596 --> 00:53:06.277
And none of that's really important.
00:53:06.318 --> 00:53:07.559
You don't take that with you, right?
00:53:07.579 --> 00:53:09.521
When you're gone, that's it.
00:53:10.210 --> 00:53:10.971
You know, you're gone.
00:53:11.010 --> 00:53:16.536
Debbie's dad passed away sadly recently.
00:53:16.916 --> 00:53:20.041
And it's been a very traumatic last few weeks.
00:53:20.981 --> 00:53:24.304
And grandpa there was cremated.
00:53:25.365 --> 00:53:30.992
And all we have of him now, obviously we have his memories and some of the personal belongings.
00:53:31.972 --> 00:53:33.715
But we have some of his ashes.
00:53:34.815 --> 00:53:35.496
And that's it.
00:53:35.697 --> 00:53:39.882
Physically, that's, you know, didn't have much, but that's what we have.
00:53:40.514 --> 00:53:43.476
But more important than that is the memory that we have of him.
00:53:44.358 --> 00:53:48.240
An extraordinary man, a wonderful man, a wonderful husband, a wonderful father.
00:53:48.280 --> 00:53:55.487
And that speaks to what you said earlier about how we want to be remembered, you know, through our children and through those experiences.
00:53:55.507 --> 00:54:00.192
You know, what have we given ourselves to bless the lives of the family and our friends?
00:54:00.932 --> 00:54:10.081
And I think, you know, Christmas is a time to, if we haven't a time through the year, well, Christmas is a time to reflect and to ponder and to renew and review.
00:54:10.753 --> 00:54:32.835
and probably reset our priorities, even for a short space of time, to look for those who are in need, the down and the downtrodden, and those who hands hang low and feeble knees, and to remind ourselves of the important basics in life, love to love, to be loved, to forgive.
00:54:33.815 --> 00:54:40.541
If we have a strained relationship in our family, our friends, perhaps now is the time to say sorry.
00:54:41.250 --> 00:54:47.318
Perhaps now is the time to humble ourselves and even if we feel we're in the right, just to repair that.
00:54:47.458 --> 00:55:04.465
I know when I went through the experience in May that, you know, I don't have really very much of that part of my life, but I thought there's some relationships out there that I need to renew and rebuild and restore, you know, because of time and, you know, situations that happened, misunderstandings and things like that.
00:55:04.666 --> 00:55:06.688
And I was able to do that.
00:55:07.449 --> 00:55:09.893
One in particular I had some success in.
00:55:10.498 --> 00:55:14.842
which to me I was quite afraid of, quite frightened of, but I thought, well, I'm going to do it.
00:55:15.724 --> 00:55:17.786
You know, afraid of rejection, right?
00:55:17.907 --> 00:55:19.989
We're all afraid of rejection, but I thought, what the heck?
00:55:20.610 --> 00:55:21.931
You know, you're only going to live once, right?
00:55:23.713 --> 00:55:24.715
What's rejection, right?
00:55:25.356 --> 00:55:28.380
And so anyway, it wasn't rejection.
00:55:28.440 --> 00:55:30.461
It was acceptance and it was renewal.
00:55:31.003 --> 00:55:34.126
And I think Christmas is a time to remind us of what's important.
00:55:34.567 --> 00:55:40.014
So music is a big part of it, service, time that we have, opportunity to give.
00:55:40.769 --> 00:55:44.954
to keep ourselves humble, appreciate what we've got, live within our means.
00:55:45.514 --> 00:55:52.844
Um, don't spend too much, you know, don't, uh, you know, just work within, uh, with, with what you've got to the best that you can.
00:55:53.525 --> 00:55:54.465
We can't achieve everything.
00:55:54.505 --> 00:55:55.306
We can't be everything.
00:55:55.367 --> 00:55:56.427
We can't be great actors.
00:55:57.088 --> 00:56:04.416
We can't be, you know, great politicians necessarily, but we can be great at what we do in our own life.
00:56:05.398 --> 00:56:08.601
And we could be, you know, and really that's more important than being a politician and being an actor.
00:56:09.186 --> 00:56:20.579
It's achieving the full measure of who you are to the much as you can, you know, as much as you can, as far as you can, push yourself as much as you can to be the best you.
00:56:20.938 --> 00:56:23.802
Remember what that motto is from the Scotland Edinburgh Mission.
00:56:24.784 --> 00:56:26.846
Wherever thou art, I dwell thy part.
00:56:27.246 --> 00:56:35.375
So whatever you're doing, you know, life's a stage, whatever you're doing, you know, your family, friends, work, whatever, be the best, do the best, give the best.
00:56:36.556 --> 00:56:41.525
And, you know, You might not always get it back 100%, but you'll get a lot of it back.
00:56:41.726 --> 00:56:48.052
But if you give all the good out, I believe and my experience is that you get a lot of good back.
00:56:48.653 --> 00:56:50.615
And that's what life's about.
00:56:50.755 --> 00:56:56.161
It's about giving and being the best and doing the best we can for others.
00:56:57.023 --> 00:57:04.931
So I think that's my singing and dancing and sharing experiences and building others.
00:57:05.030 --> 00:57:07.213
And that's what they're the fundamentals.
00:57:07.585 --> 00:57:08.206
I think, in life.
00:57:08.387 --> 00:57:09.989
More important than anything.
00:57:10.128 --> 00:57:32.733
But I think you said earlier, and I'll finish on this, you've reminded us not just a solution to the church's problem, but an opportunity for the church to become great, even greater than it is, even now, is to mobilize its resources, expand them, scale them, and get the missionaries and the member force, all that energy, all that service commitment.
00:57:33.155 --> 00:57:36.018
Let's get people out there serving the community.
00:57:36.418 --> 00:57:41.505
in community projects, partnering, teaming, my gosh, the church will transform if we do that.
00:57:41.565 --> 00:57:42.867
The answer is so obvious.
00:57:42.887 --> 00:57:45.873
And so there are my, and bless the Lord, there's so many.
00:57:46.273 --> 00:57:48.577
That's my concluding remarks.
00:57:48.836 --> 00:57:58.351
Just to add that to all the listeners, we want to express our gratitude to you for your patience with us, your patience with me.
00:57:58.432 --> 00:58:01.918
I'm more of an amateur podcaster, Jim's more the pro or whatever.
00:58:02.081 --> 00:58:03.423
I'm happy being an amateur.
00:58:03.985 --> 00:58:06.208
I'm not too bothered about being a professional podcaster.
00:58:06.628 --> 00:58:11.295
I like coming on and sharing stories and experiences and, you know, not sounding professional.
00:58:11.335 --> 00:58:12.016
I quite like that.
00:58:12.737 --> 00:58:20.730
And so, you know, if anything that we said has helped you in any of the podcasts, then that is a blessing to my life.
00:58:22.331 --> 00:58:26.137
Well, Ian, I just want to say this Christmas that you have been a blessing in my life.
00:58:26.882 --> 00:58:30.387
And I'm grateful for this opportunity to be able to share this time with you.
00:58:30.586 --> 00:58:46.590
And I'm grateful for all of the people who have reached out to us to talk about if this podcast has helped them, to give us encouragement, and also to tell us where we can improve.
00:58:47.833 --> 00:58:49.474
But this has been a great experience.
00:58:49.976 --> 00:58:54.141
And this, I think, is our chance to help throw a few starfish back in the ocean.
00:58:55.106 --> 00:58:59.030
So to everybody who is listening, thank you for listening.
00:58:59.590 --> 00:59:00.811
Merry Christmas to you.
00:59:01.432 --> 00:59:07.079
Happy holidays, whatever holidays you celebrate, whatever is close to your heart.
00:59:08.239 --> 00:59:11.563
We are very grateful for you here at Inside Out.
00:59:12.405 --> 00:59:14.467
So thank you all, and thank you,
00:59:15.527 --> 00:59:15.588
Ian.
00:59:15.608 --> 00:59:19.413
Ho, ho, ho, and a Merry Christmas to you all.
00:59:19.432 --> 00:59:21.054
God blesses everyone.
00:59:21.574 --> 00:59:22.376
There we go.
00:00:01.217 --> 00:00:16.617
Hello and welcome to another episode of Inside Out.
00:00:17.257 --> 00:00:22.403
My name is Jim Bennett and I am here with the Yuletide Ian Wilkes.
00:00:22.743 --> 00:00:23.545
How are you, sir?
00:00:24.385 --> 00:00:26.187
I am feeling very Christmassy today.
00:00:26.268 --> 00:00:27.410
I'm excited about Christmas.
00:00:28.097 --> 00:00:33.143
Looking forward to spending time with family, friends and taking time off work.
00:00:34.045 --> 00:00:42.994
A few days doing nothing, which I think is quite therapeutic and really excited about spending time over Christmas.
00:00:43.456 --> 00:00:44.496
Are your kids coming home?
00:00:45.298 --> 00:00:50.865
Yeah, we all kind of regroup and they're all coming here, which is traditional.
00:00:51.484 --> 00:00:55.090
And we kind of hang out, play games, have fun, eat too much.
00:00:56.161 --> 00:01:00.246
Dance, you know, everything apart from alcohol.
00:01:00.286 --> 00:01:01.908
We don't do alcohol in the house.
00:01:02.570 --> 00:01:02.969
All right.
00:01:03.070 --> 00:01:06.234
We don't either, but we're not going to be at the house.
00:01:06.655 --> 00:01:11.760
So this Christmas, we're flying to Cabo San Lucas in Mexico.
00:01:12.742 --> 00:01:12.903
Oh, nice.
00:01:12.923 --> 00:01:19.331
We decided, you know, we can play Santa Claus or we can get, because now our family's starting to scatter.
00:01:19.471 --> 00:01:22.254
My oldest daughter lives in Milwaukee.
00:01:22.655 --> 00:01:24.938
She's just started residency as a doctor.
00:01:25.825 --> 00:01:31.591
And my second oldest daughter lives in Southern California, my old stomping ground.
00:01:31.632 --> 00:01:36.317
She's getting a doctorate at the University of Southern California, which is also my alma mater.
00:01:36.378 --> 00:01:39.240
But so we haven't seen either one of them for quite some time.
00:01:40.742 --> 00:01:43.146
And it's going to be really delightful to have them here.
00:01:43.365 --> 00:01:53.216
And they're all showing up and then we're all hopping on a plane and we're spending a week in the sun, which makes us very happy because it's starting to get pretty cold here.
00:01:53.376 --> 00:01:54.037
Although it's not...
00:01:54.658 --> 00:01:55.978
It's not all that bad yet.
00:01:56.060 --> 00:01:58.542
We've had a couple of snowstorms, but it's been all right.
00:01:58.862 --> 00:02:02.727
Have you ever done some kind of big travel with your family before?
00:02:03.847 --> 00:02:04.588
We have, yeah.
00:02:04.649 --> 00:02:12.497
We normally stay at home at Christmas time, but we've traveled lots of different places around the world, U.S., parts of Europe.
00:02:13.438 --> 00:02:14.039
We've been to St.
00:02:14.080 --> 00:02:17.223
Lucia, the Caribbean, or Caribbean.
00:02:17.263 --> 00:02:22.849
So, yeah, as the kids get older, well, the three kids, they've moved on now.
00:02:23.490 --> 00:02:24.711
in terms of getting their own place.
00:02:25.231 --> 00:02:32.760
So in the next few years, we plan to do a lot more traveling and we'd love to do a Mexico trip over Christmas.
00:02:33.260 --> 00:02:33.961
That's the plan.
00:02:34.102 --> 00:02:36.044
So we should coordinate next time.
00:02:36.465 --> 00:02:37.746
We should coordinate for
00:02:37.966 --> 00:02:38.045
sure.
00:02:38.067 --> 00:02:40.549
Next time the Wilkses are heading to Mexico, the Bennetts.
00:02:41.389 --> 00:02:42.311
Let's do that.
00:02:42.671 --> 00:02:43.992
Yeah.
00:02:44.633 --> 00:02:47.116
And still no alcohol, but we'll see.
00:02:47.176 --> 00:02:47.877
We'll play it by ear.
00:02:48.638 --> 00:02:50.621
We can still have fun without alcohol, can't we?
00:02:50.941 --> 00:02:51.502
That's right.
00:02:52.162 --> 00:02:57.087
Well, we are recording this, so hopefully we will have a special guest joining us.
00:02:57.329 --> 00:03:00.513
I think we're going to leave the door open for that.
00:03:00.633 --> 00:03:05.558
So if that happens, we'll stop and we'll welcome the guest and introduce them.
00:03:05.598 --> 00:03:08.203
But I don't want to do that until he gets here.
00:03:09.084 --> 00:03:11.646
But I am recording this anyway.
00:03:12.127 --> 00:03:20.038
You may hear some echo because I am sitting in a hallway in the conference center in downtown Salt Lake City.
00:03:20.705 --> 00:03:29.074
I was sitting actually in the main conference center because it was very quiet until Rick Elliot, the tabernacle organist, decided to start practicing.
00:03:29.775 --> 00:03:31.036
And then it was way too loud.
00:03:31.075 --> 00:03:31.937
I can still hear him.
00:03:32.396 --> 00:03:36.622
He's still going over his organ solo that he's gonna be performing tonight.
00:03:37.201 --> 00:03:51.003
So tonight, this is being recorded the second night of the annual Tabernacle Choir Christmas program, which, you know, this venue seats 21,000 people.
00:03:51.965 --> 00:03:58.895
And over the past few years, because of COVID and also because of construction downtown, we haven't had a full house.
00:03:59.175 --> 00:04:03.943
And this is the first year since COVID that they've given out tickets to have a full house.
00:04:04.002 --> 00:04:10.492
So last night was our first concert, and it was just packed to the gills, and it was just absolutely delightful.
00:04:11.274 --> 00:04:16.982
And one of the interesting things about it, so every time, have you ever seen a Tabernacle Choir Christmas concert, Ian?
00:04:18.024 --> 00:04:18.163
No.
00:04:18.925 --> 00:04:19.365
You have not.
00:04:20.002 --> 00:04:31.740
Um, you know, it's so, so we record them every year and they release them on the public broadcasting system in the United States, uh, with a year delay.
00:04:31.899 --> 00:04:33.702
So last year's concert was recorded.
00:04:34.283 --> 00:04:41.454
It's on PBS this year, and we're recording this for PBS next year, but live and in person, it's just an amazing experience.
00:04:42.074 --> 00:04:48.283
We always get sort of a Broadway star to come and sing as a soloist with us.
00:04:48.684 --> 00:04:51.649
We've had Kristin Chenoweth and a number of other people you may have heard of.
00:04:52.129 --> 00:04:58.077
This one is a woman named Ruthie Ann Miles, who I had never heard of before she came in, but she's really talented and wonderful.
00:04:59.139 --> 00:05:05.249
But we also have another person who serves as a narrator for a story.
00:05:05.389 --> 00:05:07.271
We always tell this dramatic story.
00:05:07.312 --> 00:05:09.956
Two years ago, David Suchet.
00:05:10.096 --> 00:05:13.040
Have you ever seen Hercule Poirot?
00:05:13.100 --> 00:05:14.081
Yes.
00:05:14.497 --> 00:05:24.533
Agatha Christie, the guy who plays Hercule Poirot in the television series, two years ago told the story about essentially a guy who was the British Schindler.
00:05:25.896 --> 00:05:31.343
He found a way to rescue a lot of children and bring them to Great Britain during World War II.
00:05:31.545 --> 00:05:35.550
And that was the most moving story I had heard in all of this until this year.
00:05:36.752 --> 00:05:39.357
So I want to focus a little bit on this year's story.
00:05:40.017 --> 00:05:42.461
It's being told by a man named Dennis Haysbert.
00:05:43.266 --> 00:05:47.213
You would probably recognize his voice, maybe more than his face.
00:05:47.233 --> 00:05:50.117
He's the voice of Allstate Insurance.
00:05:50.158 --> 00:05:52.122
You're in good hands with Allstate.
00:05:52.723 --> 00:05:54.084
Big, rich, deep voice.
00:05:54.927 --> 00:05:57.310
And he was also on the television series 24.
00:05:57.812 --> 00:06:05.326
He played David Palmer, who at the time was the first black president of the United States, because this was out before...
00:06:05.985 --> 00:06:11.793
The United States actually had a black president, so he was a fictional black president, but that was his character.
00:06:12.233 --> 00:06:13.134
So you may recognize him.
00:06:13.153 --> 00:06:18.079
But he tells this story about a man in Kenya named Charles Muli.
00:06:19.261 --> 00:06:24.286
Charles Muli, at the age of six, was abandoned by his family.
00:06:25.247 --> 00:06:30.853
His family was deeply mired in debt, and they left him.
00:06:30.894 --> 00:06:34.398
They took the younger children and left, and he was the oldest child.
00:06:34.882 --> 00:06:38.665
But he was only six years old, and he was homeless.
00:06:39.646 --> 00:06:48.656
He went around looking for scraps, begging on the streets, and just was really struggling to survive.
00:06:48.697 --> 00:07:00.589
And at the age of 16, he was finally taken in as a house boy, essentially is how they describe it.
00:07:01.511 --> 00:07:02.192
And he...
00:07:05.153 --> 00:07:23.331
He ended up getting enough money to buy a car, which he turned into a taxi, and which he parlayed into sort of a taxi business, which he parlayed into a business that sold auto parts and all these other things until he essentially had this sort of small little empire.
00:07:24.172 --> 00:07:31.939
And by the time he was in his 40s, he had a monopoly on oil production in eastern Kenya.
00:07:32.620 --> 00:07:34.021
And he was a very, very wealthy man.
00:07:34.978 --> 00:07:40.624
And at one point, his car, some children came begging to him.
00:07:40.663 --> 00:07:43.406
And he turned them away.
00:07:43.447 --> 00:07:47.350
He said, I didn't have any money.
00:07:47.370 --> 00:07:49.392
I didn't have any time to feed them.
00:07:49.492 --> 00:07:50.653
And I didn't just want to give them money.
00:07:50.694 --> 00:07:51.574
I wanted to feed them.
00:07:52.295 --> 00:07:53.177
So he turned them away.
00:07:53.216 --> 00:07:55.899
And he came back and found that his car had been stolen.
00:07:57.442 --> 00:08:01.725
And he thought about it for a minute and said, geez, that's...
00:08:02.401 --> 00:08:08.310
You know, that wouldn't have happened if I had shown the kind of compassion to these children that was shown to me.
00:08:08.329 --> 00:08:17.002
He sort of forgotten himself and decided he needed to devote his time to helping children.
00:08:18.182 --> 00:08:20.045
And he had this sort of epiphany.
00:08:20.105 --> 00:08:21.648
They described his experience.
00:08:22.709 --> 00:08:24.711
This is when he sort of discovered religion.
00:08:26.153 --> 00:08:31.680
He was not a member and is not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
00:08:32.162 --> 00:08:36.068
But he is a Christian and he talks about this powerful conversion.
00:08:37.190 --> 00:08:45.003
And he talks about one night just sort of driving off into the wilderness and just wrestling with God.
00:08:45.163 --> 00:08:46.306
What is it you want me to do?
00:08:47.326 --> 00:08:56.783
And at one point, Dennis Haysbert, when he tells the narration, he just throws open his arms and he says, he's demonstrating this moment in Charles Moody's life.
00:08:56.842 --> 00:08:58.164
And he says, use me.
00:08:59.682 --> 00:09:04.168
And he said that the love of God just sort of came flooding into his life.
00:09:04.269 --> 00:09:08.817
And he realized what he had to do was sell everything he owned.
00:09:10.219 --> 00:09:13.062
And he said, we will never work for money again.
00:09:14.004 --> 00:09:20.995
And he sold everything he owned and created, he began just by going back out into the street.
00:09:21.836 --> 00:09:27.326
And he goes out into the street and he just calls, oye, oye, tush.
00:09:27.874 --> 00:09:29.635
the ragamuffins that are there.
00:09:29.676 --> 00:09:37.144
And he says, three children sort of scampered out of the darkness and he took them home and essentially adopted them.
00:09:38.486 --> 00:09:42.071
And then he started doing this on a nightly basis.
00:09:42.932 --> 00:09:47.937
And then he remodeled his home to accommodate dozens and then hundreds of children.
00:09:47.977 --> 00:09:53.283
And it became this sort of community center, but he considered it all a family that he was adopting this whole family.
00:09:54.024 --> 00:10:07.154
And today, There are thousands upon thousands of children that have been saved by the Mully Family Foundation in Kenya and in Tanzania.
00:10:07.174 --> 00:10:20.048
And the most moving part of it was that Charles Mully actually came to the concert and Dennis Haysbert was visibly moved, visibly emotional as they talked with each other about this experience.
00:10:20.970 --> 00:10:24.614
And this was moving for a number of reasons to me.
00:10:25.601 --> 00:10:28.885
One being the story itself is so compelling.
00:10:30.006 --> 00:10:34.753
But there were two things, aspects about it that were really interesting.
00:10:34.972 --> 00:10:51.833
One is, prior to 1978, prior to the revelation giving black people priesthood and temple blessings, this kind of a presentation by the church would have been unthinkable.
00:10:53.375 --> 00:11:06.312
And second of all, The fact that the church is highlighting somebody outside of what President Nelson describes as the covenant path.
00:11:06.952 --> 00:11:09.556
This is not somebody who is seeking church membership.
00:11:09.615 --> 00:11:15.842
This is not somebody who is seeking temple blessings, but this is somebody who is a disciple of Christ.
00:11:17.183 --> 00:11:18.645
And that is enough.
00:11:19.287 --> 00:11:21.928
That is enough for the church to be able to highlight this.
00:11:22.750 --> 00:11:40.716
And it's also, I think, really wonderful and reassuring that people like Dennis Haysbert, because I don't think Dennis Haysbert would have felt comfortable narrating something, being a spokesman for the church that was denying blessings to people of color.
00:11:41.378 --> 00:11:50.610
And I don't think Charles Mouly would feel comfortable affiliating with the church in any way if the church had not made progress along those lines.
00:11:51.351 --> 00:11:56.774
So it's just really inspiring to me to do this.
00:11:56.855 --> 00:12:02.423
And of course the experience, I'm just, Christmas to me is Christmas music.
00:12:04.547 --> 00:12:11.356
I've said many times that the way I feel the spirit most immediately, most powerfully is through music.
00:12:12.239 --> 00:12:19.269
And that's the wonderful blessing of serving in the Tabernacle Choir is that I get a chance to do that every week.
00:12:20.410 --> 00:12:22.715
And I get a chance to feel that every week.
00:12:22.934 --> 00:12:29.658
And it's always, wonderful, but there's something special about Christmas.
00:12:29.859 --> 00:12:33.143
Is Christmas music a big part of your celebrations?
00:12:33.263 --> 00:12:35.865
What is it that moves you at Christmastime?
00:12:36.726 --> 00:12:40.892
Music is a big part of my life in general.
00:12:41.513 --> 00:12:53.288
I've got such a wide range in terms of taste of music, from jazz to Swing, dance, jazz, music, right through to classical.
00:12:53.408 --> 00:12:59.096
I like even a little bit of gothic music, rock, pop, classical, of course.
00:12:59.135 --> 00:13:01.697
Got some classical music I just adore.
00:13:02.158 --> 00:13:04.902
But I always loved the Mormon Chronicle Choir.
00:13:05.322 --> 00:13:07.965
It's a professional choir, of course.
00:13:08.806 --> 00:13:15.754
And a big part of the church branding, you know, if you hadn't heard of, you know, with Mormons, you've probably heard of polygamy.
00:13:16.577 --> 00:13:20.562
You've probably heard of the Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith, and you'll have heard of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
00:13:20.682 --> 00:13:24.566
It's right up there in terms of what the church is known for.
00:13:25.086 --> 00:13:31.292
And the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, you can speak to this more than I can, it connects to people who are religious and non-religious.
00:13:31.533 --> 00:13:35.976
It gets you into places that are not necessarily religiously focused.
00:13:36.557 --> 00:13:44.044
All kinds of people listen and enjoy Mormon Tabernacle Choir music because it's not just church, it's professional.
00:13:44.184 --> 00:13:45.166
It's a professional choir.
00:13:45.889 --> 00:13:55.000
So we, we put on the, uh, some old CDs and, and, uh, uh, old LPs of the Bomb and Tablet Choir.
00:13:55.019 --> 00:14:02.027
We go, we go all school and we listen to that and we just enjoy, and we play the Christmas music and we enjoy that throughout Christmas.
00:14:02.908 --> 00:14:10.937
So music and, uh, Christmas carols and, and, uh, church related music is a huge part of our Christmas experience.
00:14:11.878 --> 00:14:12.317
Um, yeah.
00:14:12.802 --> 00:14:44.062
know as i was listening to you and and um there are wonderful stories of people in all with all backgrounds all kinds of uh backgrounds who have sacrificed um a lot in their life to give to some someone else to give to others to help others who are um feeble uh you know we talk about the scriptures talk about um heads hanging low and to those with feeble knees, the downtrodden, the poor and the needy.
00:14:44.883 --> 00:14:54.734
And there are many of those individuals around the world, sadly, who are in need, not just at Christmas time, but they experience that all through the year.
00:14:54.774 --> 00:15:36.739
00:15:36.859 --> 00:15:38.942
And that's what I think the church does really well, by the way.
00:15:38.961 --> 00:15:43.688
I think the church is extraordinary at providing opportunities to serve and to help others.
00:15:43.889 --> 00:15:45.412
And I do miss that.
00:15:45.652 --> 00:15:50.058
Although we've replaced that experience by serving in the community.
00:15:50.099 --> 00:15:57.990
Every year, there's a group of us go down to the homeless shelter in the town that we live.
00:15:58.572 --> 00:16:01.976
And we give food and we give time and we befriend as well.
00:16:02.017 --> 00:16:02.697
It's not just...
00:16:03.201 --> 00:16:06.085
provisions and food and hot drinks.
00:16:07.346 --> 00:16:14.153
We actually have conversations with individuals who are vulnerable or excluded or disadvantaged or homeless.
00:16:15.075 --> 00:16:17.837
And I think that's probably the most precious gift we can give.
00:16:19.359 --> 00:16:22.863
Yes, you can give money, you can give materials, which are really, really important.
00:16:23.484 --> 00:16:24.865
But I also think we can give a time.
00:16:24.884 --> 00:16:43.236
If you remember that video that was on the film strip years ago, certainly when I was investigating the church, it was the It was on a film strip that the missionaries used on a projector, propped up on some, not the Book of Mormon, because that was too sacred, but the Bible.
00:16:43.277 --> 00:16:44.399
They used to prop it up on the Bible.
00:16:45.200 --> 00:16:46.121
And it was all...
00:16:46.142 --> 00:16:53.833
Yeah, the Book of Mormon was a bit more sacred than the Bible back then, but it was a man's search for happiness.
00:16:53.854 --> 00:16:54.495
I remember that.
00:16:55.655 --> 00:17:00.043
And there were two main gifts that we had from that lesson.
00:17:00.082 --> 00:17:01.785
One was free agency.
00:17:02.562 --> 00:17:03.562
Another one was time.
00:17:03.582 --> 00:17:09.771
And we had the time to choose things, to make choices.
00:17:10.732 --> 00:17:20.066
And Christmas time is a time to reflect, a time to review our relationships, to renew relationships, a time to forgive.
00:17:20.086 --> 00:17:23.349
I've said earlier, we should be doing this all the time through the year and week.
00:17:23.931 --> 00:17:24.612
We often don't.
00:17:25.232 --> 00:17:28.958
But Christmas is a time to pause, reflect, reflect.
00:17:29.250 --> 00:17:30.230
Look at our relationships.
00:17:30.270 --> 00:17:31.051
Look at our friendships.
00:17:31.092 --> 00:17:32.453
Look at our family relationships.
00:17:32.974 --> 00:17:33.715
Look at our life.
00:17:34.076 --> 00:17:35.196
Be grateful for what we have.
00:17:35.978 --> 00:17:37.099
We've got time.
00:17:37.140 --> 00:17:39.962
Many of us have time.
00:17:40.022 --> 00:17:41.144
Some of us don't have time.
00:17:41.846 --> 00:17:42.445
We don't know.
00:17:42.465 --> 00:17:50.576
We might have had some bad news, and we may only have, sadly, a short time here on this planet, on this earth.
00:17:51.257 --> 00:17:58.105
There are people who are walking around feeling numb and feeling lost, feeling alone and feeling hurt.
00:17:58.561 --> 00:18:02.606
And we don't know their stories because it's not something that they advertise.
00:18:02.646 --> 00:18:07.373
You don't see often what's going on inside people's minds or people's hearts.
00:18:08.074 --> 00:18:14.643
But we have the time, and if we create it, we have the opportunity to help others and to serve others.
00:18:15.784 --> 00:18:22.827
On an earlier podcast, I shared my experience that I had with my– uh, embolism event that happened in May.
00:18:22.847 --> 00:18:30.396
It's, it's, um, it was a life changing experience for me and it was very close to me not being here.
00:18:30.977 --> 00:18:35.922
Um, but here I am, I'm on this podcast with you when it's December and I'm having another Christmas.
00:18:36.143 --> 00:18:39.486
And so I, uh, don't take things for granted as much.
00:18:40.708 --> 00:18:50.038
Um, and I think, uh, if there's a message here in a podcast, uh, a number of messages is to remind ourselves of what we have.
00:18:51.233 --> 00:18:56.760
We have life, and life, yes, it can be very challenging, and it could be challenging right now for many.
00:18:57.280 --> 00:18:59.723
But we have life, and we have opportunity.
00:18:59.865 --> 00:19:00.945
We can create opportunities.
00:19:02.288 --> 00:19:08.955
And we have people, whether we know it or not, who are there, who can help us and love us.
00:19:09.977 --> 00:19:14.021
Sometimes we need to be the ones to reach out to let people know that we need help.
00:19:15.584 --> 00:19:16.986
People can't read minds.
00:19:17.953 --> 00:19:22.038
They can't look at you and automatically know that you are in need.
00:19:22.240 --> 00:19:27.306
And sometimes it requires a little bit of humility and strength to say, hey, I need help.
00:19:28.488 --> 00:19:29.328
I'm struggling right now.
00:19:29.588 --> 00:19:30.009
I'm alone.
00:19:30.049 --> 00:19:32.051
I feel lost.
00:19:32.813 --> 00:19:35.696
And there's a huge amount of good out there, Jim, in the world.
00:19:36.018 --> 00:19:39.122
We've got a world of division, for sure.
00:19:39.182 --> 00:19:43.807
We're entering another period of division and conflict.
00:19:43.827 --> 00:19:45.309
2025 is...
00:19:46.082 --> 00:19:49.026
I think going to be another year of conflict.
00:19:49.086 --> 00:19:50.688
Hopefully we can resolve some of the big issues.
00:19:51.449 --> 00:19:52.951
We can't change things in the world.
00:19:53.511 --> 00:20:00.622
We can make a little bit of a difference locally, regionally, maybe certainly in our own lives and within that sphere of influence.
00:20:01.222 --> 00:20:06.609
We probably can't change some of the big issues happening in the world, but we can make a difference on a personal level.
00:20:07.010 --> 00:20:12.878
We can make someone feel good, do something for them, remind them of who they are, that they are children of God.
00:20:12.919 --> 00:20:14.801
I still believe that we're all children of God.
00:20:15.490 --> 00:20:25.865
And I still believe in the Christmas message that the churches continue to communicate each Christmas, that Christ lives and that he is real and that he died for a purpose.
00:20:25.925 --> 00:20:28.529
I still have a lot of...
00:20:28.549 --> 00:20:30.492
That still has a lot of hold on me.
00:20:31.394 --> 00:20:32.194
I still hope for that.
00:20:33.757 --> 00:20:36.181
The scriptures talk about, you know, we hope for a better world.
00:20:36.781 --> 00:20:39.846
I think we all want to live in a better world.
00:20:40.607 --> 00:20:41.489
And we want to...
00:20:42.786 --> 00:20:46.951
be free from the problems that we've got for a period of time, at least.
00:20:47.011 --> 00:21:01.352
And I think Christmas is a time where we can gather around, gather our friends and our family, and for a moment, maybe we could forget some of our problems, be grateful for what we have, think about Christ, who he was, his example.
00:21:01.952 --> 00:21:03.515
I mean, he sacrificed everything.
00:21:04.536 --> 00:21:08.300
He gave everything, and he gave his life, and I still believe that.
00:21:09.522 --> 00:21:11.425
And so...
00:21:11.970 --> 00:21:13.792
We have agency.
00:21:14.333 --> 00:21:15.153
We can choose.
00:21:15.454 --> 00:21:18.018
I think most people in the world have got agency to some extent.
00:21:18.459 --> 00:21:28.913
Sadly, there are people in the world, the country of the world, that take away agency, and that's terrible to live in a situation where you don't have much freedom of choice.
00:21:30.194 --> 00:21:33.700
But we have time as well, and we can do great things with that time.
00:21:34.661 --> 00:21:36.364
And we can help ourselves, and we can help others.
00:21:36.384 --> 00:21:38.346
And we get strength, I think, from helping others.
00:21:38.946 --> 00:21:51.042
If we're down and lost, I've learned that However hard it might seem, and not everyone can do this, I get that, but we can, to make ourselves feel good, we can actually do something for others and we get a good feeling from that.
00:21:51.584 --> 00:21:53.905
And the church does really well on that.
00:21:54.026 --> 00:22:00.531
You know, when we are in the service of our fellow men, we are in the service of God.
00:22:00.771 --> 00:22:04.214
I think it was in Mosiah, a scripture that you and I used to know off by heart.
00:22:04.976 --> 00:22:08.720
So music, have you seen his big, yeah, Mosiah 2.17.
00:22:08.940 --> 00:22:10.121
Music is a huge part of this.
00:22:11.394 --> 00:22:21.892
read the scriptures as a family, sharing the story about Jesus, going out and doing a service project, being there for a friend, listening, and I would say spending time.
00:22:21.932 --> 00:22:27.942
If you haven't got any money and you haven't got much to give, just give your time to someone.
00:22:28.221 --> 00:22:39.928
And if they feel better because you spent time with them and you lifted them up and you built them and they feel good, even for a moment, then To me, that's a great gift.
00:22:40.269 --> 00:22:41.309
I know that's very generic.
00:22:41.869 --> 00:22:54.243
I've not got any specific stories to share right now, but I think that's the message I would share with our listeners and anyone else who's out there.
00:22:55.684 --> 00:23:06.616
Well, what's compelling about it to me, I mean, it doesn't feel generic because it feels like you...
00:23:07.778 --> 00:23:21.019
continue to treasure the principles that you embraced when you were inside the church, and that you haven't lost any of that by being outside the church.
00:23:21.961 --> 00:23:32.428
And I think, you know, that Christmas is a great sort of reminder of the world beyond the church.
00:23:32.528 --> 00:23:37.814
I mean, when I was growing up, and again, we've said many times, your background was very different from mine.
00:23:38.875 --> 00:23:42.097
But when I was growing up, the church was essentially the whole world.
00:23:42.117 --> 00:23:45.942
I mean, the church was the haven from the world.
00:23:46.643 --> 00:23:53.329
And as you got closer to Christmas, the church, we had huge Christmas parties.
00:23:53.349 --> 00:24:04.105
I can remember one growing up where there was a woman who had all of the members bring their finest china to come and serve Christmas dinner.
00:24:04.326 --> 00:24:05.808
It was two days before Christmas.
00:24:06.690 --> 00:24:17.048
But it was just this huge event, huge elaborate sort of event, and it wasn't focused on anything specifically related to the church.
00:24:18.009 --> 00:24:20.734
It was just sort of community building.
00:24:22.786 --> 00:24:41.988
I feel like we've lost so much community within the church, but at the same time, we can sort of be insulated in the church and start thinking that the Ian Wilkeses of the world can't really experience Christmas if they're not inside.
00:24:42.909 --> 00:24:57.219
We start thinking that we have the kind of monopoly on all of the things that you described, all of the things that you described, hold dear to your heart, even though you no longer participate in the church.
00:24:58.279 --> 00:25:10.838
I think one of the biggest problems the church faces now is that we seem to be losing that sense of community.
00:25:11.760 --> 00:25:13.784
The church isn't the whole world for anybody.
00:25:14.104 --> 00:25:20.314
Here in the United States, they got rid of the Boy Scouting program and they replaced it with essentially nothing.
00:25:21.153 --> 00:25:26.762
And the church has gone down from three hours to two and everybody says, isn't that great?
00:25:26.823 --> 00:25:28.645
Not so many times in boring meetings.
00:25:29.867 --> 00:25:32.250
And I say that's great too.
00:25:32.330 --> 00:25:36.218
I don't like boring meetings, but there's something else that's been lost.
00:25:36.258 --> 00:25:37.680
We don't do the road shows.
00:25:37.779 --> 00:25:39.903
We don't do the camp outs.
00:25:40.002 --> 00:25:43.489
We don't do all of the things that we're building community.
00:25:43.608 --> 00:25:48.978
And we don't do the big Christmas celebrations, the big Christmas parties.
00:25:50.082 --> 00:25:51.904
and the big Christmas community building.
00:25:52.184 --> 00:25:58.454
And so one of the reasons why the Tabernacle Choir is so precious to me is that here it is.
00:25:59.317 --> 00:26:08.632
Here it is, the church saying, okay, yes, this is sort of community building, but we're building our community beyond the boundaries of the church.
00:26:09.553 --> 00:26:15.442
This Tab Choir concert is an outreach to the world.
00:26:16.423 --> 00:26:17.346
And it's not...
00:26:18.753 --> 00:26:20.135
it's not proselyting.
00:26:20.537 --> 00:26:24.403
You know, we've talked many times about how to fix the missionary program.
00:26:25.124 --> 00:26:30.593
And I think what we settled on was this idea that all missionaries should be service missionaries.
00:26:31.515 --> 00:26:36.883
That going out and knocking on doors in 2024 is a complete and total waste of time.
00:26:38.346 --> 00:27:01.679
But if people are attracted to the community, if people see Latter-day Saints out in the world, making a difference, feeding the homeless, doing what Charles Mouly did, reaching out to people in need, whether or not they come to church or ever come to church.
00:27:04.001 --> 00:27:07.105
That, I think, is the way you build the kingdom of God.
00:27:07.925 --> 00:27:25.477
I don't think you build the kingdom of God through theological bashing or through exclusivity or through any of the kinds of approaches that I think are part of the reason why the whole missionary effort has largely stalled throughout the world.
00:27:26.538 --> 00:27:43.602
I think if this spirit of Christmas, if the church were to embrace this year round, if the church were to put on these kinds of productions and reach out to people outside the boundaries of the church, well, what do you think that would do?
00:27:44.450 --> 00:27:46.172
What kind of impact do you think that would have?
00:27:48.115 --> 00:27:48.394
Huge.
00:27:50.638 --> 00:27:50.878
Yeah.
00:27:51.819 --> 00:27:52.181
Massive.
00:27:52.260 --> 00:27:55.404
I mean, it would be transformative for sure.
00:27:56.307 --> 00:27:58.869
Well, so I'm hopeful.
00:27:58.890 --> 00:28:03.056
I mean, you've said many times, I hope that the church is listening to our podcast.
00:28:03.135 --> 00:28:03.896
I don't know if they are.
00:28:03.936 --> 00:28:12.829
I know, but I just don't see any other way forward for the church.
00:28:13.377 --> 00:28:16.721
other than to embrace that same sense of community.
00:28:17.462 --> 00:28:30.959
I imagine what would happen if Moroni appeared to me in my bedroom right after President Nelson passed away and said, we're doing this differently.
00:28:30.979 --> 00:28:32.961
It's not going through seniority.
00:28:33.020 --> 00:28:37.946
We've decided that you are the guy we need to be the president of the church.
00:28:40.513 --> 00:28:44.938
I mean, or pick your ridiculous scenario.
00:28:45.798 --> 00:28:46.859
But I've thought, what would I do?
00:28:46.900 --> 00:28:56.368
If I were president of the church, if I were in charge, if I could see all the problems in the church, I can see the struggles and I can see the fact that we're really not growing.
00:28:58.131 --> 00:28:59.692
I would say, this is what I would do.
00:28:59.711 --> 00:29:02.234
I would lean into the community.
00:29:02.454 --> 00:29:03.935
I would lean into the service.
00:29:05.156 --> 00:29:25.883
And I would say, I would make the Latter-day Saints the kind of people that other people want to be like, that other people want to be with, that other people are grateful to have in their communities.
00:29:26.564 --> 00:29:33.123
Because the insular nature of the church sometimes means you can be in the community and you can not make a difference in the community.
00:29:33.243 --> 00:29:38.347
I mean, I can remember growing up, it's like, okay, well, you said, give them their time, give them your money.
00:29:38.749 --> 00:29:40.931
And I thought, well, the church does this so well.
00:29:41.030 --> 00:29:42.251
I pay my fast offerings.
00:29:42.853 --> 00:29:44.513
I pay my tithing, I pay my fast offerings.
00:29:44.614 --> 00:29:45.474
Isn't that enough?
00:29:46.096 --> 00:29:46.856
Isn't that doing it?
00:29:47.156 --> 00:29:49.699
Isn't that all that's asked of me?
00:29:50.861 --> 00:30:01.471
And the older I get, the more I realize just how tiny that kind of thinking is, how much more expansive That kind of thing.
00:30:01.891 --> 00:30:07.979
So as a thought experiment, I don't know if you've ever done this, Ian, but I'm going to put you on the spot here a little bit.
00:30:08.179 --> 00:30:09.019
So get ready.
00:30:10.261 --> 00:30:11.604
President Nelson has just died.
00:30:12.545 --> 00:30:15.648
Moroni comes to visit me and I told him, no, I'm busy.
00:30:15.689 --> 00:30:16.589
I got other things to do.
00:30:16.609 --> 00:30:18.071
I have to sort my socks.
00:30:19.032 --> 00:30:22.616
So Moroni decides, okay, well, who else should be the church?
00:30:22.817 --> 00:30:29.165
And then he appears in your bedroom and says, Ian, you're in charge of the church.
00:30:29.794 --> 00:30:31.395
You're the new president of the church.
00:30:31.615 --> 00:30:32.317
What do you do?
00:30:34.640 --> 00:30:36.041
I would accept it.
00:30:37.183 --> 00:30:37.523
All right.
00:30:38.325 --> 00:30:39.987
In an instant, in a heartbeat.
00:30:40.047 --> 00:30:45.493
And I say that without arrogance, hopefully, with some degree of humility, if that's possible.
00:30:46.055 --> 00:30:46.736
And I'll tell you why.
00:30:46.756 --> 00:30:48.577
I think I would make a big difference.
00:30:48.817 --> 00:30:49.439
And I'll tell you why.
00:30:50.200 --> 00:31:01.057
Because you, a few moments ago, have communicated what I think is one of the most important things Solutions, opportunities facing the church today.
00:31:01.597 --> 00:31:03.319
Look at the history of the church.
00:31:03.461 --> 00:31:06.704
Look at how the church is structured and organized.
00:31:07.385 --> 00:31:09.808
It's organized around a service model.
00:31:11.550 --> 00:31:14.654
You know, ministries, home teachers, visit teachers, it used to be called callings.
00:31:14.775 --> 00:31:21.222
I mean, it's established structure, organization, and processes are geared to serving.
00:31:22.163 --> 00:31:26.509
Every calling, every process is about helping others.
00:31:27.490 --> 00:31:36.300
It's misguided, I think, in regards to how it utilizes that structure in certain areas and in a certain way.
00:31:36.942 --> 00:31:48.635
But I think you just communicated the solution that I would take up and lead with, with strength, vigor, confidence, and unrelenting passion.
00:31:48.675 --> 00:31:56.645
Not because I'm Ian Wilkes and I might possess or not some unique, extraordinary magical skill, which I do not.
00:31:57.250 --> 00:32:00.433
But I think that's one of the most important answers, and that is to focus on service.
00:32:00.913 --> 00:32:01.555
And you've nailed it.
00:32:02.395 --> 00:32:04.479
Go out there with$150 billion.
00:32:04.598 --> 00:32:05.660
You can do a lot with that.
00:32:06.601 --> 00:32:08.222
You can go teaming and partnering.
00:32:08.262 --> 00:32:10.546
You can help the homeless, which is what Christ would do.
00:32:11.768 --> 00:32:13.028
Put that money to good use.
00:32:13.670 --> 00:32:14.730
Put that organization.
00:32:14.810 --> 00:32:17.355
Go team and partner with the churches, other charities.
00:32:17.755 --> 00:32:21.058
Take that small model, because the church does this to an extent.
00:32:21.640 --> 00:32:23.082
It's got helping hands.
00:32:23.521 --> 00:32:30.351
It goes into different countries of the world and helps with water distribution projects and clean drinking water.
00:32:30.671 --> 00:32:31.772
It does an element of that.
00:32:32.374 --> 00:32:36.219
I think the answer, one of the answers is to expand that exponentially.
00:32:37.460 --> 00:32:39.403
Do that across the United States.
00:32:40.064 --> 00:32:42.165
Do it in, you know, do it with your own members.
00:32:42.606 --> 00:32:49.095
Look at what you can do right now to help the most impoverished members, for example, right?
00:32:50.076 --> 00:33:04.123
But extend that like the examples of the stories that he gave, and take this extraordinary organization with all that wealth and power, and also the most important thing is the devotion, Jim, that members have in the church.
00:33:04.864 --> 00:33:15.855
The commitment, the testament, the devotion, the sacrifice, the extraordinary commitment and enthusiasm that the members have to help.
00:33:16.916 --> 00:33:17.758
That's the power.
00:33:18.402 --> 00:33:19.423
That's extraordinary power.
00:33:20.084 --> 00:33:24.750
Make that, broaden that power, distribute that power, scale it.
00:33:25.210 --> 00:33:27.633
I talk about scaling business operations in business.
00:33:28.294 --> 00:33:33.701
Scale the successes and expand it globally.
00:33:34.141 --> 00:33:46.777
And if the church did this, it would get more converts, not just about standing up and talking at a pulpit or general conference or reading a scripture or going to a meeting to talk about another meeting, which is...
00:33:48.066 --> 00:34:34.760
lots of wasted time right um put put it into action go do something mobilize all that resources and scale it and go team partner build that resources it will you know if your objectives are to expand the brand get more converts um strengthen the membership um you will achieve that if the if the bread and the listen to this um You will achieve greater things than you've done already if you focus most of the resources into expanding those service opportunities on a scale far, far, far greater than what they've done right now.
00:34:35.481 --> 00:34:45.452
So I would accept, before you even finish the question, and I would commit significant resources to that, and I promise you, because it's the right thing to do.
00:34:45.512 --> 00:34:45.914
It's easy.
00:34:46.626 --> 00:34:48.347
It's the right thing to do.
00:34:48.387 --> 00:34:53.052
And doing the right thing to do often always is it's there facing you.
00:34:53.411 --> 00:34:54.432
It's staring in your face.
00:34:54.914 --> 00:34:55.855
It's the right thing to do.
00:34:55.894 --> 00:34:56.976
It's simple.
00:34:56.996 --> 00:34:58.476
It's what Christ would want.
00:34:59.297 --> 00:35:00.278
You've got the organization.
00:35:00.298 --> 00:35:01.239
You've got the resources.
00:35:01.800 --> 00:35:05.623
And I can promise you, the church would potentially double in size.
00:35:06.063 --> 00:35:09.568
Even if people don't join the church, they'll think highly of it.
00:35:10.389 --> 00:35:13.331
And even if they don't get converts and you've blessed their lives, right?
00:35:13.351 --> 00:35:15.954
You've helped them or you've helped a friend or you've helped somebody.
00:35:16.257 --> 00:35:20.322
you've seen, you've been part of a project, that will stay with you forever.
00:35:20.342 --> 00:35:40.327
I think you've nailed, again, this is not the first time we've talked about this, this is a solution, not just to the problems that the church is facing, there's an opportunity to achieve all of the spiritual and service objectives of the church.
00:35:40.547 --> 00:35:49.795
If the church has got other objectives like financial, which it probably has, unfortunately, but it would generate more revenue as well.
00:35:49.835 --> 00:35:52.818
If you're looking at it from a business perspective, I'm sure it would.
00:35:53.239 --> 00:35:57.625
But the primary focus is to serve others, like what Christ did.
00:35:57.804 --> 00:35:58.405
That's the message.
00:35:59.688 --> 00:36:01.409
And that's what I would do.
00:36:01.751 --> 00:36:02.891
And I would take that mantle.
00:36:03.353 --> 00:36:07.057
I'd run with it for, well, it's a lifelong calling, so you can't release me.
00:36:07.713 --> 00:36:10.097
I'd be dead every day.
00:36:10.378 --> 00:36:16.525
I remember when Elder Oaks trained us that weekend, we had a conversation with him, and I've shared this with him before, I think.
00:36:16.565 --> 00:36:19.650
He said, what kind of presidency do you want to be?
00:36:19.690 --> 00:36:22.034
And we were reflecting on that.
00:36:22.894 --> 00:36:24.237
And I can't remember the answers we gave.
00:36:24.257 --> 00:36:28.141
And he also said, how do you want to be remembered as a presidency?
00:36:29.282 --> 00:36:42.112
And I thought about that, and I thought, well, for me personally, you know, be remembered as a bishop or a leader or a state presidency, It's that I was approachable, I listened, hopefully understood, and I did something.
00:36:43.472 --> 00:36:44.353
I did something to help.
00:36:45.195 --> 00:36:45.936
And I made a difference.
00:36:46.016 --> 00:36:53.324
And I did something physically, you know, action, that actually helped in some measure that person.
00:36:53.545 --> 00:36:54.867
I helped improve their life.
00:36:54.927 --> 00:36:58.431
I fixed a problem or I did something to help them or their family.
00:36:58.972 --> 00:37:00.172
And that's all I ever wanted.
00:37:00.333 --> 00:37:04.358
And to the other counselors, they were the same.
00:37:04.706 --> 00:37:05.266
They were the same.
00:37:05.306 --> 00:37:07.128
That's what they wanted as well.
00:37:07.570 --> 00:37:08.650
You know, we're on this planet.
00:37:08.891 --> 00:37:10.793
We talked about time and agency earlier.
00:37:11.315 --> 00:37:16.041
We're on this planet for a very short period of time in the history of the Earth.
00:37:16.242 --> 00:37:19.445
And, you know, 3 billion years, is it 3.8 billion years?
00:37:19.987 --> 00:37:21.047
Is that the universe?
00:37:21.469 --> 00:37:22.931
Is it 13 billion for the universe?
00:37:22.990 --> 00:37:25.434
I think the Earth is 3, 4 billion years old.
00:37:25.454 --> 00:37:26.795
The moon's about 3 billion.
00:37:27.376 --> 00:37:28.297
We are a...
00:37:28.802 --> 00:37:33.208
Just a fraction of a fraction of a fraction.
00:37:33.228 --> 00:37:42.885
Our life is just a tiny minuscule of a minuscule in that time span of the earth.
00:37:43.467 --> 00:37:50.077
We're here for extremely unfathomable, unimaginable short period of time to do something.
00:37:51.010 --> 00:37:56.295
to do good, to be good, to be the best, and do the best that we can to help others.
00:37:56.375 --> 00:37:59.217
I think happiness, it's key to happiness is serving others, for sure.
00:37:59.918 --> 00:38:05.423
And you know, when we die, and you and I are pushing 60, you know, I'm a little bit older than you, right?
00:38:06.204 --> 00:38:22.644
One day, I remember this was, I remember being in a discussion once, I'd only been out two weeks in Dumfries in Scotland, and my companion very boldly told somebody that, because they were rejecting the gospel, and he looked at me and said, to this person on the door.
00:38:22.664 --> 00:38:24.186
He said, one day you will die.
00:38:24.206 --> 00:38:27.713
I was like, why are you saying that?
00:38:28.172 --> 00:38:31.838
And this person looked quite, it was like an Elder Spencer moment, I think.
00:38:32.420 --> 00:38:34.483
And they looked quite shook up by that.
00:38:34.523 --> 00:38:37.487
And he said, you will be brought before God and you'll be held accountable.
00:38:37.827 --> 00:38:39.351
And I think it quite scared the person.
00:38:39.371 --> 00:38:45.500
But when I think about that, I think how fleeting life is.
00:38:45.701 --> 00:38:46.322
We will die.
00:38:46.978 --> 00:38:48.179
We will die one day.
00:38:48.199 --> 00:38:49.061
We're not going to live forever.
00:38:49.081 --> 00:39:05.742
And eventually, you know, after a few years of people, you know, a few weeks, months maybe, and if we're lucky, a few years of missing us and mourning us, those who have a memory of us eventually, and they will miss us, eventually they will die too.
00:39:06.722 --> 00:39:08.965
So those who have a memory of us will go.
00:39:08.985 --> 00:39:18.697
And eventually, if we do something great in the universe or great on the earth or something of some significance, We might be remembered in some small footnote somewhere.
00:39:18.978 --> 00:39:22.842
Hopefully the Inside Out podcasts are eternal.
00:39:22.882 --> 00:39:28.590
Hopefully we're eternalized with Inside Out podcasts, some evidence that we exist.
00:39:28.951 --> 00:39:32.335
But eventually, Jim, you and I will be forgotten.
00:39:34.137 --> 00:39:35.219
We might be a footnote.
00:39:35.259 --> 00:39:38.021
We'll be on some genealogy chart, a name.
00:39:38.262 --> 00:39:49.817
Jim Bennett, you're married to Laurel, kids, birthday, you know, date you died, born and died, maybe a little bit of information about what you did, but that's it.
00:39:50.878 --> 00:39:52.000
Maybe not much more than that.
00:39:52.780 --> 00:39:57.166
Your entire life into two sentences, if you're lucky.
00:39:57.847 --> 00:39:59.829
And that's it.
00:39:59.849 --> 00:40:03.855
And then those memories that people have of us will go when they die.
00:40:03.894 --> 00:40:11.143
And a hundred years from now, no one will remember me or you apart from a footnote.
00:40:11.184 --> 00:40:14.735
And even then they'll read it And then we'll be forgotten again.
00:40:14.775 --> 00:40:16.438
And we might come up again at some point.
00:40:16.958 --> 00:40:20.043
So life is very short.
00:40:20.603 --> 00:40:21.545
We have limited time.
00:40:21.565 --> 00:40:31.097
All the things that we've done will be written into one sentence or two sentences at some point in the future.
00:40:31.137 --> 00:40:34.342
If the podcast still exists, that's probably different.
00:40:34.382 --> 00:40:34.922
That might last.
00:40:35.463 --> 00:40:38.646
But what I'm saying is that we don't have much time.
00:40:39.668 --> 00:40:40.530
We're going to get forgotten.
00:40:41.282 --> 00:40:42.923
The universe is going to forget us.
00:40:43.385 --> 00:40:45.688
You know, from the universe perspective, we didn't even exist.
00:40:46.369 --> 00:40:48.030
Where's the evidence that we even existed, right?
00:40:48.931 --> 00:40:49.413
But we did.
00:40:49.432 --> 00:40:51.155
Here we are at this time.
00:40:51.175 --> 00:40:54.880
And we've got life and we can do something with that life.
00:40:55.541 --> 00:40:58.666
And we can decide how do we want to be remembered.
00:40:58.985 --> 00:41:01.088
So you asked me a very great question.
00:41:01.128 --> 00:41:03.311
You may not have expected the answer.
00:41:03.351 --> 00:41:03.731
I don't know.
00:41:03.751 --> 00:41:07.097
I would step up to that and do my very best.
00:41:07.737 --> 00:41:10.641
But I want to throw a question back to you and put you on the spot, if I may.
00:41:11.010 --> 00:41:11.590
Nice.
00:41:12.130 --> 00:41:19.820
I want to kind of throw the, you know, hit it back into your car and ask you, how does Jim Bennett want to remember Jim Bennett?
00:41:20.740 --> 00:41:23.583
How do you rather, sorry, let me call you for that.
00:41:23.764 --> 00:41:25.065
How do you want to be remembered?
00:41:25.686 --> 00:41:25.766
I've
00:41:25.786 --> 00:41:27.668
actually thought an awful lot about that question.
00:41:28.369 --> 00:41:37.798
So I think I have an answer ready for you because being remembered was much, much, much more important to me when I was younger.
00:41:38.360 --> 00:41:40.041
I wanted to be a world famous actor.
00:41:40.769 --> 00:41:46.496
And I remember thinking, okay, I'm going to get my big break, and I'm going to make it into the movies, and I'm going to make my mark.
00:41:47.197 --> 00:41:50.882
And it was, aha, this is what is really, really important to me.
00:41:51.903 --> 00:41:52.905
And that never happened.
00:41:53.826 --> 00:41:58.693
And I went through a period of disappointment and frustration that it hadn't happened.
00:42:00.454 --> 00:42:02.137
I sort of expected it to happen.
00:42:02.336 --> 00:42:05.981
I thought that's what God wanted to happen for me.
00:42:06.021 --> 00:42:09.326
And there's a lot of arrogance in that.
00:42:09.889 --> 00:42:15.898
I mean, there's a lot of, and then I sort of went through this idea of, well, then I don't matter at all.
00:42:16.838 --> 00:42:20.244
Then I'm completely worthless and maybe God doesn't even pay attention to me at all.
00:42:20.304 --> 00:42:22.266
And I sort of flip back and forth.
00:42:23.047 --> 00:42:39.809
But the thing that has given me, I think, if not the correct answer to your question, the answer that sits best with me, the thing that has given me that answer is my children.
00:42:41.090 --> 00:42:48.097
is, okay, I now recognize this is the world I'm leaving behind for them.
00:42:48.137 --> 00:42:56.288
And it doesn't matter if I'm not remembered as a huge star.
00:42:56.467 --> 00:43:00.893
I mean, the fact is, you said in 100 years, we'll all be forgotten.
00:43:00.913 --> 00:43:04.456
That includes Tom Cruise and...
00:43:05.121 --> 00:43:12.389
Brad Pitt and all these people who, okay, yes, these guys are a big deal and everybody knows who they are.
00:43:12.449 --> 00:43:15.152
Nobody's going to know who they are 100 years.
00:43:16.353 --> 00:43:17.094
They're just not.
00:43:17.135 --> 00:43:18.615
They're just not going to remember any of it.
00:43:18.916 --> 00:43:19.737
It doesn't matter.
00:43:20.798 --> 00:43:22.400
And you're right.
00:43:22.521 --> 00:43:26.083
When people die, their memories of you will die as well.
00:43:27.226 --> 00:43:43.137
But all I want is to know that I've raised children who have gone out into the world to be decent and kind and wonderful human beings.
00:43:44.440 --> 00:43:53.114
And if I do that, the likelihood that they do that with the next generation is, I think, fairly high.
00:43:53.155 --> 00:43:57.342
And that becomes your legacy.
00:43:58.463 --> 00:44:12.159
And so in 100 years, no one may remember me but they will remember their own parents who were parented by those decent kind people, parented by the decent kind people that I parented.
00:44:12.199 --> 00:44:16.586
And that will be the legacy I leave behind.
00:44:17.528 --> 00:44:23.757
So now I'm very comfortable with the idea of being forgotten.
00:44:24.519 --> 00:44:30.909
You know, I've run for office and at one point running for office was sort of that same sort of grab for glory.
00:44:31.585 --> 00:44:34.208
First time I ran for office was over 20 years ago.
00:44:35.170 --> 00:44:41.699
But even when I ran for office this last time, and of course I haven't won an election, so I'm not going to be running for office again.
00:44:41.719 --> 00:44:47.505
It was interesting because after I lost this last election, I went, okay, I'm never going to hold elective office.
00:44:48.788 --> 00:44:52.331
And if you told me that 20 years ago, I would have been crestfallen.
00:44:52.632 --> 00:44:56.597
I would have thought, oh no, oh no, this is how I make my mark.
00:44:57.762 --> 00:45:01.746
And now it was, I mean, after I lost this last election, it stung.
00:45:01.766 --> 00:45:15.925
It was just, I mean, losing an election is so hard, but within a day, maybe two days, I got this sense of relief.
00:45:17.067 --> 00:45:20.731
I got the sense of, I don't need to do this anymore.
00:45:21.351 --> 00:45:25.317
This isn't what defines my value as a human being.
00:45:25.922 --> 00:45:29.885
Jim Bennett has value whether or not he ever holds elective office.
00:45:31.067 --> 00:45:39.597
And that value comes from the impact I have, not just on my children, but on the people I can have an impact on.
00:45:39.757 --> 00:45:41.719
I'm always reminded, it's a cliche story.
00:45:41.778 --> 00:45:45.463
You know the story of the starfish throwing the starfish back?
00:45:46.443 --> 00:45:52.030
Two guys are walking along a beach and all of these starfish have washed up on the shore.
00:45:53.153 --> 00:45:55.996
and they're gonna die because they're out of the water.
00:45:57.119 --> 00:46:03.206
And so one of the men picks up one starfish and throws it back in the ocean.
00:46:05.047 --> 00:46:08.672
And the other one says, look at all of these starfish.
00:46:09.853 --> 00:46:11.755
How do you think you're ever gonna make a difference?
00:46:13.639 --> 00:46:15.641
That didn't make any difference at all.
00:46:15.661 --> 00:46:19.445
And he says, no, it made a difference to the one I threw back.
00:46:20.769 --> 00:46:24.036
And to me, that's what life essentially is.
00:46:24.817 --> 00:46:26.739
I can make a difference with a...
00:46:27.400 --> 00:46:32.570
I can't throw all of the starfish back into the sea, but I can throw one at a time.
00:46:33.170 --> 00:46:42.788
I can make a difference with the people that God has given, has placed in my path.
00:46:43.889 --> 00:46:44.811
And so...
00:46:46.626 --> 00:46:57.400
The older I get, it's really interesting because I really feared death much more when I was younger.
00:46:58.742 --> 00:47:01.746
I was really scared of what would happen when I die.
00:47:01.786 --> 00:47:07.994
And the church sort of alleviated some of that, but not all of it.
00:47:09.777 --> 00:47:14.847
But as the older I get, and as you point, pushing 60, I'm 56.
00:47:15.007 --> 00:47:16.829
I've got four more years till I'm 60.
00:47:17.329 --> 00:47:18.992
When I'm 60, they kick me out of the choir.
00:47:19.672 --> 00:47:22.155
Tabernacle choir, you age out at age 60.
00:47:22.394 --> 00:47:27.701
So they've already told me when I die in the choir.
00:47:29.643 --> 00:47:34.949
But the older I get, the closer I get to death, the less I fear it.
00:47:36.210 --> 00:47:43.438
The less I fear being forgotten because I can see the goodness in my children.
00:47:44.226 --> 00:47:51.653
I can see the impact my life has had and it's never gonna get huge accolades from anybody.
00:47:51.693 --> 00:48:02.204
It's never gonna be written up in a, you know, some kind of, I don't know if I'm even gonna be a footnote, but it doesn't matter.
00:48:02.244 --> 00:48:10.893
It doesn't matter because I can, and in accepting that, that's where the happiness is.
00:48:11.969 --> 00:48:18.840
not looking for the glory, not worrying about, geez, what I have now just isn't enough.
00:48:19.822 --> 00:48:26.530
Accepting what you have now, and that's sort of a Buddhist philosophy, just sort of letting it go.
00:48:26.552 --> 00:48:33.161
If you let it go, you appreciate what you still have.
00:48:34.342 --> 00:48:38.869
Every year, every Christmas is more special than the last.
00:48:39.746 --> 00:48:52.721
I mean, this time, I thought so many times, you know, now that my daughters have left home, my three sons are all in college, but they're all in college within a 50-mile radius of the house.
00:48:52.780 --> 00:48:55.903
They come back every Sunday for Sunday dinner.
00:48:56.864 --> 00:49:04.554
But this next week coming up is going to be the first time all of us have been together for almost a year.
00:49:05.894 --> 00:49:08.018
And I now...
00:49:08.673 --> 00:49:15.362
recognize how precious that is, how rare that is, how wonderful that is.
00:49:15.402 --> 00:49:28.777
And I also recognize a heightened sense of my own responsibility to help others who may not have that, who may not have the opportunity.
00:49:29.980 --> 00:49:39.798
And also, I feel like it's important, if God has called me to do anything, I mean, I think this podcast is is part of this idea.
00:49:39.818 --> 00:49:43.003
I remember Michelle Brady Stone talking about the borderlands.
00:49:44.204 --> 00:49:49.829
I think at Christmas time within the church, it's the people on the borderlands that are forgotten.
00:49:50.590 --> 00:49:59.621
The people who are on the edge, who are on the margins, who are just on their way out, or the people who have just left and are feeling that loss of community.
00:49:59.661 --> 00:50:03.806
I think it's essential we reach out to them.
00:50:04.289 --> 00:50:09.536
And I feel sort of called that that's the space where God wants me.
00:50:10.597 --> 00:50:19.266
And so hopefully if I'm going to be remembered by anybody at all, it will be that I was there on the borderlands.
00:50:19.465 --> 00:50:27.414
I was not there on the center stage, but I was doing everything I could to throw every starfish I could back into the sea.
00:50:28.235 --> 00:50:32.519
So do you have visions of glory?
00:50:32.539 --> 00:50:33.722
Are you hoping to be?
00:50:34.402 --> 00:50:42.778
Are you hoping that the Ian Wilkes Memorial Foundation and a big statue of you in the middle of Tiananmen Square...
00:50:42.800 --> 00:50:49.634
I don't know why I picked Tiananmen Square, but, you know, that's where big statues are.
00:50:50.576 --> 00:50:52.579
I'm hoping to be the next prophet.
00:50:52.619 --> 00:50:54.023
You just asked me what would I do with it.
00:50:55.065 --> 00:50:55.365
So I...
00:50:55.777 --> 00:50:57.340
I would rescue the church.
00:50:57.740 --> 00:51:02.349
But no, I've not got any big aspirations or ambitions like that.
00:51:03.710 --> 00:51:04.532
I'm where you are.
00:51:04.552 --> 00:51:05.634
I'm comfortable in my skin.
00:51:06.235 --> 00:51:10.382
You know, I've failed enough to know what failure is like, right?
00:51:10.541 --> 00:51:12.164
Learned from it, I think, mostly.
00:51:12.885 --> 00:51:15.389
As successors, you know, you taste the bitter with the sweet.
00:51:15.971 --> 00:51:16.490
Life is...
00:51:17.353 --> 00:51:21.418
You know that movie, I think it's called Parenthood, and it's with...
00:51:23.713 --> 00:51:24.755
Steve, what's his name?
00:51:24.815 --> 00:51:25.737
Steve Martin, yeah.
00:51:25.978 --> 00:51:26.818
Steve Martin, yeah.
00:51:26.838 --> 00:51:27.920
It's a great movie.
00:51:28.340 --> 00:51:30.224
A good movie to watch over Christmas.
00:51:31.186 --> 00:51:34.670
And, you know, life, the family relationships are not going so well.
00:51:34.851 --> 00:51:35.733
Remember the story.
00:51:35.773 --> 00:51:39.539
There's all kinds of problems across each relationship in that family.
00:51:40.119 --> 00:51:42.061
And him and his wife are arguing in the kitchen.
00:51:42.081 --> 00:51:46.268
I can't remember the details about what to do with the situation or one of the kids.
00:51:46.789 --> 00:51:49.414
And the grandma comes in and randomly...
00:51:49.858 --> 00:52:00.009
shares a memory of when she was younger that she was, um, used to go to the fairground rides when, um, she was younger and she went on the, uh, the roundabout, the carousel thing.
00:52:00.028 --> 00:52:00.188
Right.
00:52:00.809 --> 00:52:05.315
And she said it was okay, but it just, um, you know, it just goes round and round and round.
00:52:05.355 --> 00:52:05.934
That's all it does.
00:52:06.356 --> 00:52:08.739
And she said her favorite was the roller coaster.
00:52:10.280 --> 00:52:13.804
The roller coaster went fast and slow and up and down.
00:52:13.844 --> 00:52:15.505
And it was just thrilling.
00:52:16.034 --> 00:52:21.623
And eventually, in this scene in the movie, she then comes in, shares that experience, very random.
00:52:22.244 --> 00:52:23.425
They're both looking at each other.
00:52:23.465 --> 00:52:28.173
Steve Martin and the lady who's the actress playing his wife look at each other.
00:52:28.795 --> 00:52:36.806
And then they realize that all the challenges and problems they've got with the family is a roller coaster, essentially.
00:52:37.528 --> 00:52:38.911
And life is a roller coaster.
00:52:39.050 --> 00:52:40.673
We have successes, failures, failures.
00:52:41.346 --> 00:52:42.387
We achieve some things.
00:52:42.427 --> 00:52:44.048
We don't achieve other things, et cetera.
00:52:44.630 --> 00:52:45.692
And that's what life is about.
00:52:45.711 --> 00:52:47.273
It's about teaching us and humbling us.
00:52:47.634 --> 00:52:49.737
And teaching is those important values.
00:52:49.817 --> 00:52:52.039
And teaching is what's really important.
00:52:52.500 --> 00:53:04.494
And what's really important is family, friends, time, monetary things, not really important, station and position and titles and cars and houses.
00:53:04.596 --> 00:53:06.277
And none of that's really important.
00:53:06.318 --> 00:53:07.559
You don't take that with you, right?
00:53:07.579 --> 00:53:09.521
When you're gone, that's it.
00:53:10.210 --> 00:53:10.971
You know, you're gone.
00:53:11.010 --> 00:53:16.536
Debbie's dad passed away sadly recently.
00:53:16.916 --> 00:53:20.041
And it's been a very traumatic last few weeks.
00:53:20.981 --> 00:53:24.304
And grandpa there was cremated.
00:53:25.365 --> 00:53:30.992
And all we have of him now, obviously we have his memories and some of the personal belongings.
00:53:31.972 --> 00:53:33.715
But we have some of his ashes.
00:53:34.815 --> 00:53:35.496
And that's it.
00:53:35.697 --> 00:53:39.882
Physically, that's, you know, didn't have much, but that's what we have.
00:53:40.514 --> 00:53:43.476
But more important than that is the memory that we have of him.
00:53:44.358 --> 00:53:48.240
An extraordinary man, a wonderful man, a wonderful husband, a wonderful father.
00:53:48.280 --> 00:53:55.487
And that speaks to what you said earlier about how we want to be remembered, you know, through our children and through those experiences.
00:53:55.507 --> 00:54:00.192
You know, what have we given ourselves to bless the lives of the family and our friends?
00:54:00.932 --> 00:54:10.081
And I think, you know, Christmas is a time to, if we haven't a time through the year, well, Christmas is a time to reflect and to ponder and to renew and review.
00:54:10.753 --> 00:54:32.835
and probably reset our priorities, even for a short space of time, to look for those who are in need, the down and the downtrodden, and those who hands hang low and feeble knees, and to remind ourselves of the important basics in life, love to love, to be loved, to forgive.
00:54:33.815 --> 00:54:40.541
If we have a strained relationship in our family, our friends, perhaps now is the time to say sorry.
00:54:41.250 --> 00:54:47.318
Perhaps now is the time to humble ourselves and even if we feel we're in the right, just to repair that.
00:54:47.458 --> 00:55:04.465
I know when I went through the experience in May that, you know, I don't have really very much of that part of my life, but I thought there's some relationships out there that I need to renew and rebuild and restore, you know, because of time and, you know, situations that happened, misunderstandings and things like that.
00:55:04.666 --> 00:55:06.688
And I was able to do that.
00:55:07.449 --> 00:55:09.893
One in particular I had some success in.
00:55:10.498 --> 00:55:14.842
which to me I was quite afraid of, quite frightened of, but I thought, well, I'm going to do it.
00:55:15.724 --> 00:55:17.786
You know, afraid of rejection, right?
00:55:17.907 --> 00:55:19.989
We're all afraid of rejection, but I thought, what the heck?
00:55:20.610 --> 00:55:21.931
You know, you're only going to live once, right?
00:55:23.713 --> 00:55:24.715
What's rejection, right?
00:55:25.356 --> 00:55:28.380
And so anyway, it wasn't rejection.
00:55:28.440 --> 00:55:30.461
It was acceptance and it was renewal.
00:55:31.003 --> 00:55:34.126
And I think Christmas is a time to remind us of what's important.
00:55:34.567 --> 00:55:40.014
So music is a big part of it, service, time that we have, opportunity to give.
00:55:40.769 --> 00:55:44.954
to keep ourselves humble, appreciate what we've got, live within our means.
00:55:45.514 --> 00:55:52.844
Um, don't spend too much, you know, don't, uh, you know, just work within, uh, with, with what you've got to the best that you can.
00:55:53.525 --> 00:55:54.465
We can't achieve everything.
00:55:54.505 --> 00:55:55.306
We can't be everything.
00:55:55.367 --> 00:55:56.427
We can't be great actors.
00:55:57.088 --> 00:56:04.416
We can't be, you know, great politicians necessarily, but we can be great at what we do in our own life.
00:56:05.398 --> 00:56:08.601
And we could be, you know, and really that's more important than being a politician and being an actor.
00:56:09.186 --> 00:56:20.579
It's achieving the full measure of who you are to the much as you can, you know, as much as you can, as far as you can, push yourself as much as you can to be the best you.
00:56:20.938 --> 00:56:23.802
Remember what that motto is from the Scotland Edinburgh Mission.
00:56:24.784 --> 00:56:26.846
Wherever thou art, I dwell thy part.
00:56:27.246 --> 00:56:35.375
So whatever you're doing, you know, life's a stage, whatever you're doing, you know, your family, friends, work, whatever, be the best, do the best, give the best.
00:56:36.556 --> 00:56:41.525
And, you know, You might not always get it back 100%, but you'll get a lot of it back.
00:56:41.726 --> 00:56:48.052
But if you give all the good out, I believe and my experience is that you get a lot of good back.
00:56:48.653 --> 00:56:50.615
And that's what life's about.
00:56:50.755 --> 00:56:56.161
It's about giving and being the best and doing the best we can for others.
00:56:57.023 --> 00:57:04.931
So I think that's my singing and dancing and sharing experiences and building others.
00:57:05.030 --> 00:57:07.213
And that's what they're the fundamentals.
00:57:07.585 --> 00:57:08.206
I think, in life.
00:57:08.387 --> 00:57:09.989
More important than anything.
00:57:10.128 --> 00:57:32.733
00:57:33.155 --> 00:57:36.018
Let's get people out there serving the community.
00:57:36.418 --> 00:57:41.505
in community projects, partnering, teaming, my gosh, the church will transform if we do that.
00:57:41.565 --> 00:57:42.867
The answer is so obvious.
00:57:42.887 --> 00:57:45.873
And so there are my, and bless the Lord, there's so many.
00:57:46.273 --> 00:57:48.577
That's my concluding remarks.
00:57:48.836 --> 00:57:58.351
Just to add that to all the listeners, we want to express our gratitude to you for your patience with us, your patience with me.
00:57:58.432 --> 00:58:01.918
I'm more of an amateur podcaster, Jim's more the pro or whatever.
00:58:02.081 --> 00:58:03.423
I'm happy being an amateur.
00:58:03.985 --> 00:58:06.208
I'm not too bothered about being a professional podcaster.
00:58:06.628 --> 00:58:11.295
I like coming on and sharing stories and experiences and, you know, not sounding professional.
00:58:11.335 --> 00:58:12.016
I quite like that.
00:58:12.737 --> 00:58:20.730
And so, you know, if anything that we said has helped you in any of the podcasts, then that is a blessing to my life.
00:58:22.331 --> 00:58:26.137
Well, Ian, I just want to say this Christmas that you have been a blessing in my life.
00:58:26.882 --> 00:58:30.387
And I'm grateful for this opportunity to be able to share this time with you.
00:58:30.586 --> 00:58:46.590
And I'm grateful for all of the people who have reached out to us to talk about if this podcast has helped them, to give us encouragement, and also to tell us where we can improve.
00:58:47.833 --> 00:58:49.474
But this has been a great experience.
00:58:49.976 --> 00:58:54.141
And this, I think, is our chance to help throw a few starfish back in the ocean.
00:58:55.106 --> 00:58:59.030
So to everybody who is listening, thank you for listening.
00:58:59.590 --> 00:59:00.811
Merry Christmas to you.
00:59:01.432 --> 00:59:07.079
Happy holidays, whatever holidays you celebrate, whatever is close to your heart.
00:59:08.239 --> 00:59:11.563
We are very grateful for you here at Inside Out.
00:59:12.405 --> 00:59:14.467
So thank you all, and thank you,
00:59:15.527 --> 00:59:15.588
Ian.
00:59:15.608 --> 00:59:19.413
Ho, ho, ho, and a Merry Christmas to you all.
00:59:19.432 --> 00:59:21.054
God blesses everyone.
00:59:21.574 --> 00:59:22.376
There we go.
