We're glad you're here.
00:00:27.839 --> 00:00:32.799
Now let's dive head first into this episode of the Healthy Mindset AI Podcast.
00:00:32.960 --> 00:00:35.200
Here's your host, Mike Hartman.
00:00:52.799 --> 00:00:54.240
His name is JJ Davis.
00:00:54.399 --> 00:01:00.159
He was uh big leaguer, played in the big leagues, uh, drafted eighth overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
00:01:00.240 --> 00:01:03.840
He was one of the top young players coming out of the draft.
00:01:03.920 --> 00:01:09.439
People talked about him around the country and talk about uh uh an athletic build.
00:01:09.519 --> 00:01:11.599
He when I first met JJ, I couldn't believe it.
00:01:11.680 --> 00:01:13.200
I thought he was a basketball player.
00:01:13.280 --> 00:01:19.920
He was six foot eight and he was like built like uh six foot eight, built like a hockey player.
00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:22.719
I said, Oh my gosh, look at the size of this guy.
00:01:22.959 --> 00:01:35.760
And uh I was introduced to him by a really good friend, one of my closest friends was the assistant GM of a major league baseball team in in the big leagues, and he said, I really want you to work with this guy.
00:01:35.920 --> 00:01:36.319
And I did.
00:01:36.400 --> 00:01:38.799
I worked with him in the summer, and it was great.
00:01:38.879 --> 00:01:45.439
He worked his butt off, he trained, he did everything he had to do, and he ended up playing games for the Washington Nationals.
00:01:45.599 --> 00:01:51.840
But from if you look at it from the external side, from the outside, it looks like wow, this this guy's doing great.
00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:59.120
But JJ openly will tell you that it really uh how it always appears isn't always how it is.
00:01:59.280 --> 00:02:10.479
And JJ openly would tell you that he was dealing with with drugs, he was dealing with alcohol, bad attitude, you know, parting, staying out late.
00:02:10.639 --> 00:02:13.840
Um, and I and eventually cost him his baseball career.
00:02:13.919 --> 00:02:16.800
Like everything he had, it it was thrown away.
00:02:16.879 --> 00:02:31.120
And after you know, getting involved with uh some bad people, then he went in a different direction and ended up going to federal prison for drug trafficking, and he was sentenced uh you know in prison.
00:02:31.199 --> 00:02:34.639
Like it was something like when I heard about that, my stomach turned.
00:02:34.719 --> 00:02:36.080
I I couldn't believe it.
00:02:36.240 --> 00:02:40.800
And for a lot of people, that would have been it, they would have given up, but not JJ.
00:02:40.960 --> 00:02:54.000
JJ ended up turning his life around, and he said, I'm gonna learn from these mistakes, and I'm ready to to have new challenges, I'm ready to do different things, I'm really, I'm ready to bring some good into the world.
00:02:54.159 --> 00:03:07.520
And and when I talked to JJ, I met with JJ, we met about a year ago, and we were talking about you know his career and what he's doing in his life, and he was just a different JJ, he was so focused.
00:03:07.599 --> 00:03:12.159
Uh, he was always such an amazing individual, an amazing person.
00:03:12.400 --> 00:03:24.960
Uh, you know, yes, he got himself into trouble and he and he he had to pay for that, but he he told me a few things at that time that I uh that I want to share with some of you.
00:03:25.039 --> 00:03:27.520
And I asked JJ, I sent him a message, a text.
00:03:27.599 --> 00:03:40.400
I said, JJ, I I really want to share your story, but I do want some things that I could share with others on how, you know, what you learned about yourself on how we could pass on to others, and and can you do that?
00:03:40.560 --> 00:03:44.000
And he said, you know, the number one thing was was God.
00:03:44.159 --> 00:03:47.840
His faith became the foundation of everything that he followed.
00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:50.000
And so he took that as number one.
00:03:50.080 --> 00:03:58.400
He says, that's the number one thing that that he took he took upon himself is to become more spiritual, to have more faith in God.
00:03:58.639 --> 00:04:01.840
And I said, you know, that this is the the path that he took.
00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:09.039
The number two thing was that, you know, he says prison forced him to reflect and take an honest look at his life.
00:04:09.120 --> 00:04:13.919
Like when he had a lot of time to think in prison, like, okay, what am I gonna do with myself?
00:04:14.080 --> 00:04:15.199
Like, who am I?
00:04:15.439 --> 00:04:18.399
And he ended up making those changes on his own.
00:04:18.560 --> 00:04:19.199
He really did.
00:04:19.360 --> 00:04:37.680
He really wanted to change for himself, he wanted to be a better person in society, and then he met his wife, which to me, his eyes lit up when he was talking about uh his wife and the support that his wife gave him through this entire process, and for him, it was something that he fought for.
00:04:37.839 --> 00:04:39.680
Like he says, I'm gonna fight now.
00:04:39.839 --> 00:04:43.279
Somebody's fighting for me, and they want me to succeed so bad.
00:04:43.439 --> 00:04:51.439
And and for him, it was it inspired him, you know, to keep moving forward, and um just some of these other things.
00:04:51.600 --> 00:04:54.240
He shared just a handful of things with me.
00:04:54.399 --> 00:04:59.839
Uh, failure was important, and you know, instead of running from it, he learned from it.
00:05:00.319 --> 00:05:08.480
So you you see somebody that's uh that has all the potential in the world, and you know, it ended up backfiring.
00:05:08.560 --> 00:05:15.199
And he he looked at himself, you know, is a failure, but but he said, I'm gonna take the time, I'm gonna learn from this.
00:05:15.439 --> 00:05:17.199
Okay, what can I do differently?
00:05:17.360 --> 00:05:18.639
What can I do in my life?
00:05:18.800 --> 00:05:21.120
And and he really took those steps.
00:05:21.360 --> 00:05:23.680
Uh he told me a few other things.
00:05:23.759 --> 00:05:27.040
Like one of the biggest things for him was family is everything.
00:05:27.199 --> 00:05:34.000
He realized that you know you'll you'll meet so many people in in your life, and this is true about professional sports.
00:05:34.160 --> 00:05:48.800
Uh, you will learn, especially being a professional athlete, and you play at the highest level, that your phone is ringing, people want to be around you, they're calling for tickets, and it's so interesting, you know who your real friends are when it's all over.
00:05:49.199 --> 00:05:50.720
That's the one thing I learned.
00:05:50.800 --> 00:05:58.720
Uh, I mean, I have friends coming to see me in Chicago, Montreal, Toronto, and uh sometimes tickets aren't always free.
00:05:58.800 --> 00:06:12.160
You know, we get two tickets to every game, but I'd have my family there sometimes, and other times I want to treat my friends to tickets, and and and we're talking 150, you know, 150, uh 200 a ticket.
00:06:12.240 --> 00:06:17.120
You go to Madison Square Garden, and then you lose touch of your friends after.
00:06:17.279 --> 00:06:18.800
And JJ told me the same thing.
00:06:18.879 --> 00:06:26.160
He said, Oh, he had all these great people around him, everybody wanted to be around him, but when he was done, those people weren't there anymore.
00:06:26.240 --> 00:06:35.920
And uh I said to him, I said, you know, JJ, you don't need a hundred friends, you need one one good friend.
00:06:36.079 --> 00:06:37.839
Uh, I tell the same thing to my kids.
00:06:38.000 --> 00:06:41.360
Sometimes we need just good people around us.
00:06:41.519 --> 00:06:46.720
Sometimes it's four friends, sometimes it's five, but you need just good people in your life.
00:06:46.800 --> 00:06:49.759
And then to him, uh, he realized that.
00:06:49.920 --> 00:06:53.439
And from there, he said, you know, Mike, I need a purpose.
00:06:53.600 --> 00:06:54.560
I need a purpose.
00:06:54.639 --> 00:06:59.680
So he found a reason to get up every day and just become a better man, become a better person inside.
00:06:59.920 --> 00:07:01.120
He found that purpose.
00:07:01.279 --> 00:07:05.839
We talk about that a lot in coaching, like like we talked about before, like, okay, what is your purpose?
00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:07.439
What what do you want out of it?
00:07:07.600 --> 00:07:11.759
Well, sure, when when he was younger, he was a big league uh ball player.
00:07:11.920 --> 00:07:17.680
He wanted to play in the major leagues, but now life after sports, it completely changed.
00:07:17.920 --> 00:07:23.120
And to me, I I respected that so much because JJ doesn't hide behind a mask.
00:07:23.199 --> 00:07:30.879
He's gonna come up front and tell you, you know, his his mistakes, his failures, his setbacks, things that he regrets.
00:07:31.120 --> 00:07:33.199
The only thing he's doing is moving forward.
00:07:33.360 --> 00:07:55.040
And uh he he told me that, you know, one thing too is that he wants to be around positive people that influence him in his life, like mentors and and people that are are on his path, and and and he doesn't have time for people that are really not in his corner, like or people that maybe are just bad people, you know, bad energy.
00:07:55.199 --> 00:07:56.240
He could read it.
00:07:56.480 --> 00:07:59.759
And uh when we were talking, I remember he he did say something.
00:07:59.839 --> 00:08:05.680
You learn quick in prison, you know, you can read people very well, especially out in the real world.
00:08:05.839 --> 00:08:10.959
Like I he could read people extremely well, or you know, do I really want to be around this person?
00:08:11.199 --> 00:08:24.240
Not judging everybody, but just making sure that person has that energy that you want to be around, and he really taught himself that okay, I wasn't as an athlete, I wasn't the most structured ball player.
00:08:24.319 --> 00:08:34.000
I wasn't, but I need structure and discipline and daily habits every day in my life, and we share this with our athletes, we share this with people in corporate America.
00:08:34.159 --> 00:08:36.960
JJ started incorporating some really good habits.
00:08:37.120 --> 00:08:48.639
He's training, he's uh taking care of himself, uh, he he's walking a lot, he's journaling, and he really took the time to work on himself.
00:08:48.799 --> 00:08:51.120
So when you talk about self-help, what is that?
00:08:51.279 --> 00:08:53.440
It's it's it's helping yourself.
00:08:53.600 --> 00:08:54.720
How can you get better?
00:08:54.799 --> 00:08:57.279
So JJ really took that in.
00:08:57.360 --> 00:09:07.200
We always talk about the importance of having good habits, and that's one thing that JJ took um, you know, that's one thing he he takes pride in doing.
00:09:07.519 --> 00:09:11.840
Another thing he told me is health and wellness, taking care of the mind and body.
00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:14.960
And we say this a lot that the mind and body are one.
00:09:15.120 --> 00:09:18.799
When one is off, if your body is off, your mind's gonna be off.
00:09:18.879 --> 00:09:27.200
If you're if you're you know, if you're my if you're you feel okay, but your body doesn't, there's always it's it's a balance.
00:09:27.279 --> 00:09:30.080
So we always say the mind and body are one.
00:09:30.639 --> 00:09:38.000
And if you know, looking back, you know, you know, eliminating these things from his life took a lot of work.
00:09:38.080 --> 00:09:42.879
It took a lot of time, even a lot harder than trying to be a major league ball player.
00:09:43.039 --> 00:09:46.639
He really took the time into becoming a better person.
00:09:46.799 --> 00:09:49.039
So I'm I'm really proud of JJ.
00:09:49.279 --> 00:10:02.799
I've worked with him, you know, for for uh an entire uh he had the winter off, and before he went to uh spring training, we we worked together and uh I was worried about him back then.
00:10:02.960 --> 00:10:04.720
I'm not gonna deny that.
00:10:04.879 --> 00:10:10.480
I know he he he liked to party and do things, but maybe sometimes we need direction.
00:10:10.639 --> 00:10:19.840
So if you know anybody like in your life, and if it you know you see somebody that even has so much great potential, talent alone isn't gonna get you there.
00:10:19.919 --> 00:10:33.679
You you need the entire package, and uh I'm proud of JJ, I'm proud of what he's doing now in his life, and he's so positive, he doesn't want to talk about too much what happened before, but again, he's not hiding behind it.
00:10:33.759 --> 00:10:35.919
He'll share with you his mistakes.
00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:40.320
But the thing is that he's he says, you know, Mike, I'm always gonna start moving forward.
00:10:40.559 --> 00:10:43.120
And I told him, I said, JJ, you need to write a book.
00:10:43.279 --> 00:10:57.919
You need to write a book on this because I mean you you could help so many out, and you've taken the the the the challenge on and you've taken this um to a whole other level to just to be better in your life.
00:10:58.080 --> 00:11:06.720
And I hear a lot of people, it's it's interesting, like they tell me, yeah, I'm gonna change my habits, I'm gonna do this differently.
00:11:06.879 --> 00:11:10.399
I know I failed at things, but that didn't make me a failure.
00:11:10.559 --> 00:11:15.120
But I'm just gonna make sure I do better next time, and nothing ever happens.
00:11:15.440 --> 00:11:17.440
So the hardest part is starting.
00:11:17.600 --> 00:11:22.799
The hardest part to me is actually trying to trying to get better, working on this.
00:11:22.879 --> 00:11:24.240
And this didn't happen overnight.
00:11:24.320 --> 00:11:29.279
This took JJ quite a few years, and he took one step at a time, and I'm so happy.
00:11:29.440 --> 00:11:31.679
He has a great team behind him now.
00:11:31.759 --> 00:11:37.759
He's uh he's got an amazing family, and he's taken the steps of uh of getting better.
00:11:37.840 --> 00:11:40.080
So we're gonna be sharing many other stories.
00:11:40.240 --> 00:11:47.120
I thought it was important that I would share JJ's story with others, and uh JJ, I'm proud of you, and just keep it going.
00:11:47.279 --> 00:11:56.720
You know, uh there's a lot of ups and downs, and we know how life is, and the key is just to be as balanced as you can and just keep doing what you're doing.
