TRANSCRIPT 🔗
00:00:06.559 --> 00:00:09.279
Welcome everybody to the Directed IRA podcast.
00:00:09.279 --> 00:00:10.320
My name is Mark Kohler.
00:00:10.320 --> 00:00:12.480
I'm here with the amazing Mat Sorenson.
00:00:12.480 --> 00:00:18.079
And today we are talking about how to invest in precious metals inside your retirement account.
00:00:18.079 --> 00:00:19.199
I mean, this is exciting.
00:00:19.199 --> 00:00:22.719
You could buy gold, silver, the cubic zirconian.
00:00:22.719 --> 00:00:23.519
Is that how you say it?
00:00:23.519 --> 00:00:24.480
You can buy that, right?
00:00:24.719 --> 00:00:25.519
You can't buy that one.
00:00:25.519 --> 00:00:27.519
We're going to go through the list of what you can and can't buy.
00:00:27.519 --> 00:00:30.879
But gold is on the list, and gold hit new highs.
00:00:30.879 --> 00:00:33.840
So for any of you that have already been investing in gold, congrats to you.
00:00:33.840 --> 00:00:35.119
You've been making some good money.
00:00:35.119 --> 00:00:39.280
$3,800 an ounce right now is where gold was last trading at.
00:00:39.280 --> 00:00:42.399
So, but you can own this as an asset class.
00:00:42.399 --> 00:00:54.399
And I know a lot of people think of gold as maybe being or precious metals sometimes being like a counterbalance to the stock market, but the stock market's hitting new highs, and we have gold also hitting new highs.
00:00:54.399 --> 00:00:58.000
Um, we can get into the reasons why on that maybe and speculate here.
00:00:58.000 --> 00:01:00.960
But the good news is that's been an asset that's been performing well.
00:01:00.960 --> 00:01:04.079
So we want to talk about how can your IRA own this?
00:01:04.079 --> 00:01:11.599
Like the actual physical metal, like the actual gold bar, how can it own that metal um in your IRA?
00:01:11.840 --> 00:01:14.560
Yeah, and a couple of insights here.
00:01:14.560 --> 00:01:19.280
We once interviewed someone here on our podcast that actually had a gold bar.
00:01:19.280 --> 00:01:20.799
And I was like, I want to see this thing.
00:01:20.799 --> 00:01:25.200
Because, you know, James Bond and you know, Goldfinger, these things were massive.
00:01:25.200 --> 00:01:28.159
And uh he held it up and it was like the size of a cell phone.
00:01:28.159 --> 00:01:28.959
I'm like, what?
00:01:28.959 --> 00:01:31.439
That's a gold bar because that's that's a pound right there.
00:01:31.439 --> 00:01:32.480
I'm like, geez.
00:01:32.480 --> 00:01:34.879
Uh but uh it was pretty cool.
00:01:34.879 --> 00:01:37.840
But the don't listen to anyone out there.
00:01:37.840 --> 00:01:46.400
There's a lot of bad information about the myths of you can't buy gold because you can't, you know, put it in your house and you can't do this, you can't do that.
00:01:46.400 --> 00:01:51.120
And and so it's really some bad information has put a chilling effect on this.
00:01:51.120 --> 00:01:54.319
But you can do it and do it right is super easy.
00:01:54.560 --> 00:02:01.439
Yeah, and so if you're someone that loves precious metals or believed in that asset class, invested in it, we want to talk about how your IRA can do this.
00:02:01.439 --> 00:02:04.159
Now even your Roth IRA, traditional IRA.
00:02:04.159 --> 00:02:13.680
Um, we're gonna go through a number of things, like what precious metals qualify, how you actually purchase them, how do I get this account set up so I can actually buy precious metals in my IRA?
00:02:13.680 --> 00:02:15.199
I'm not doing that at Fidelity.
00:02:15.199 --> 00:02:18.479
Like maybe I can do buy the ETF, but I can't buy the physical metals.
00:02:18.479 --> 00:02:20.879
What are the storage requirements of this?
00:02:20.879 --> 00:02:24.400
And then some of the kind of do's and don'ts and some of the things that we've seen over the years.
00:02:24.400 --> 00:02:29.680
So let's start the first point on this, which is what precious metals qualify here.
00:02:29.919 --> 00:02:34.879
Mat, does it put does the coins and pirates of the Caribbean do those word Jack experts?
00:02:34.879 --> 00:02:36.240
It depends.
00:02:36.319 --> 00:02:36.800
It depends.
00:02:36.800 --> 00:02:38.000
Let's talk about it here, actually.
00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:39.759
That's serious, that's a good question.
00:02:39.759 --> 00:02:44.159
Um, that movie was fake though, but just you know, don't hate to burst your bubble.
00:02:44.159 --> 00:02:45.280
But you know what I mean.
00:02:45.280 --> 00:02:47.520
Don't you start talking about Santa Claus?
00:02:47.520 --> 00:02:49.520
I mean, yeah, but we'll go there.
00:02:49.520 --> 00:02:52.000
But let's talk about the gold coins.
00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:57.120
So um, gold is one of the qualifying metals, silver, platinum, and palladium.
00:02:57.120 --> 00:03:00.879
Now, the two most popular that we see in IRAs are gonna be gold.
00:03:00.879 --> 00:03:09.360
Now, I'm going to my own book here, by the way, the self-directed IRA Handbook, because I have a chapter on this, and there are specific requirements on, let's say, gold.
00:03:09.360 --> 00:03:11.520
There's two things you that meet the gold.
00:03:11.520 --> 00:03:13.680
It's not just any gold you can buy with an IRA.
00:03:13.680 --> 00:03:16.560
It has to either be meet purity requirements.
00:03:16.560 --> 00:03:22.639
So that coin in Pirates of the Caribbean, if it met the purity requirement, it counts.
00:03:22.639 --> 00:03:30.000
Or it can be qualifying because it's from the a government-approved mint or a government, let's say.
00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:34.400
So, like for example, the US Mint puts out American Eagle coins.
00:03:34.400 --> 00:03:36.400
Those automatically qualify.
00:03:36.400 --> 00:03:37.039
All right.
00:03:37.039 --> 00:03:43.680
So either way, either the purity requirement or um a government-issued type of coin.
00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:47.280
And the Iraqi dinar would not qualify.
00:03:47.599 --> 00:03:49.120
Yeah, that's currency.
00:03:49.120 --> 00:03:53.680
So that is on paper, that is absolutely worthless.
00:03:54.000 --> 00:03:54.319
I know.
00:03:54.319 --> 00:03:55.439
It sounds like gold.
00:03:55.439 --> 00:03:58.560
Well, we had, oh my gosh, do you remember those scams 10 years ago?
00:03:58.719 --> 00:04:02.400
Everybody was buying Iraqi dinar is going to revalue.
00:04:02.400 --> 00:04:05.360
It was like, all right, what are you smoking?
00:04:05.439 --> 00:04:11.360
But yeah, um I think this is a really good thing, though, to diversify into as well.
00:04:11.360 --> 00:04:15.120
And and I think that it's very realistic and doable.
00:04:15.120 --> 00:04:18.000
And gold has just been performing so well.
00:04:18.319 --> 00:04:18.560
Yeah.
00:04:18.560 --> 00:04:22.319
So let me get into the purity requirements here for any of you that want to geek out on this.
00:04:22.319 --> 00:04:26.000
Gold must be 99.5% pure.
00:04:26.000 --> 00:04:26.480
Okay.
00:04:26.480 --> 00:04:31.519
That's the minimum they call fitness uh or fineness requirements uh for gold.
00:04:31.519 --> 00:04:33.120
Now the second one is silver.
00:04:33.120 --> 00:04:35.920
That that's the second most popular precious metal we see people buy.
00:04:35.920 --> 00:04:41.040
And we have people that own hundreds of millions of precious metals in their IRA here at directed IRA.
00:04:41.040 --> 00:04:43.439
Um, and silver could be the same thing.
00:04:43.439 --> 00:04:51.680
You could have a government-issued silver coin, um, or if it's a bar of silver or something like that, it could even be in coin format.
00:04:51.680 --> 00:04:53.600
Night bullion is what they may call it.
00:04:53.600 --> 00:04:57.120
99.9% is the fineness requirement for silver.
00:04:57.120 --> 00:05:00.000
Now, I've never seen anyone buy platinum or palladium.
00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:02.240
We might have some people's accounts that own them here.
00:05:02.240 --> 00:05:07.199
They're technically in the tax code as something approved that your IRA could own.
00:05:07.199 --> 00:05:14.160
Now, generally, the IRS has restricted collectibles from your IRA and said your IRA can't own collectibles.
00:05:14.160 --> 00:05:17.759
Like it can't own a coin collection, like a collectible coin.
00:05:17.759 --> 00:05:19.040
It can't own art.
00:05:19.040 --> 00:05:28.079
It can't own a wine collection, you know, it can't own those things, collectible car, but it could own precious metals.
00:05:28.079 --> 00:05:39.120
And there's a specific exclusion in there that says in this restriction that says, hey, these are collectibles you can't own, but you can own precious metals, gold, silver, platinum, palladium, as long as they meet these requirements.
00:05:39.519 --> 00:05:40.000
All right.
00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:46.959
Now, I don't know in our lineup here, but I feel prompted to say this to everybody right now.
00:05:46.959 --> 00:05:55.519
Now that you know you can do this, the the big step of how is getting the self-directed IRA so that you can do this.
00:05:55.519 --> 00:06:01.040
So we're gonna break that down as well, but don't get stressed or frustrated right now if you're like, well, I want to do this.
00:06:01.040 --> 00:06:02.800
Um, where do I start?
00:06:02.800 --> 00:06:07.519
Well, it starts by having the right type of IRA that allows for this.
00:06:08.000 --> 00:06:08.319
Yeah.
00:06:08.319 --> 00:06:12.560
And that's not gonna be the Fidelity IRA or the broker dealer IRA, right?
00:06:12.560 --> 00:06:14.639
So that's what we do as a directed IRA.
00:06:14.639 --> 00:06:16.000
We have a self-directed IRA.
00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:30.560
So let's say you have an old employer 401k of traditional dollars, or you got a traditional IRA at Charles Schwab, or you know, what we will do is you'll set up a self-directed traditional IRA at directed IRA, and then we let you invest in whatever you want.
00:06:30.560 --> 00:06:34.079
You want to buy real estate, you want to buy crypto, you want to buy precious metals.
00:06:34.079 --> 00:06:36.959
We don't restrict you to just publicly traded assets.
00:06:36.959 --> 00:06:39.600
So we'll let you buy these types of assets.
00:06:39.600 --> 00:06:41.120
Some people call them alternative.
00:06:41.120 --> 00:06:46.079
I don't know how alternative gold is, but um, but you can buy these in your in your IRA.
00:06:46.079 --> 00:06:50.959
So we open up the account for you, you'll transfer that money over, and our team does this for you.
00:06:50.959 --> 00:06:55.040
We'll make a transfer request to Merrill Lynch or Charles Schwab, wherever your money's at.
00:06:55.040 --> 00:07:00.319
That money pops into your IRA with us, still a tax-qualified account, tax preferred.
00:07:00.319 --> 00:07:02.959
But now we don't restrict you on what you can invest into.
00:07:02.959 --> 00:07:04.800
And you say, hey, I want to buy precious metals.
00:07:04.800 --> 00:07:06.160
Now you'll find a dealer.
00:07:06.160 --> 00:07:07.920
We don't sell metals, okay?
00:07:07.920 --> 00:07:10.079
Well, we're here to let you invest whatever you want.
00:07:10.079 --> 00:07:10.639
I don't care.
00:07:10.639 --> 00:07:16.959
You want to buy precious metals, you want to buy gold, you want to buy silver, you want to buy start invest in a startup or buy crypto.
00:07:16.959 --> 00:07:20.639
Uh we don't that we don't we don't have a uh horse in that race, so to speak.
00:07:20.639 --> 00:07:22.639
We just want you to be able to invest in what you want to.
00:07:22.639 --> 00:07:31.519
And so um now we do have dealers that we can refer you to if you need assistance with that, with someone that's like, well, who can I buy precious metals from that'll work in my IRA?
00:07:31.519 --> 00:07:34.879
Um, because you want to make sure you're getting the right precious metals that qualify.
00:07:34.879 --> 00:07:37.839
So um, but but our we can refer you in the right direction there.
00:07:37.839 --> 00:07:40.000
So, but so that's what we're doing here every day.
00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:42.879
So we can help get this account open, get it funded.
00:07:42.879 --> 00:07:45.759
Um, and then remember, this is your retirement account.
00:07:45.759 --> 00:07:47.920
You're building long-term wealth in this, right?
00:07:47.920 --> 00:07:48.959
You're building this up.
00:07:48.959 --> 00:07:58.240
You're you would do this because you believe in precious metals, you believe in gold or silver, whatever it might be, as being more valuable over time and going to be growing your retirement account.
00:07:58.240 --> 00:08:00.720
So you have a retirement account you're looking forward to, right?
00:08:00.720 --> 00:08:01.680
With a big account.
00:08:01.839 --> 00:08:02.160
Yeah.
00:08:02.160 --> 00:08:13.040
Now, some of you've bought precious metals before, and you might go to a dealer and go pick them up and go home and bury them in the backyard or put them under your bed or something.
00:08:13.040 --> 00:08:16.480
Maybe in the safe or something like that.
00:08:16.480 --> 00:08:17.199
Yeah.
00:08:17.519 --> 00:08:18.959
Oh, that's good, I guess.
00:08:18.959 --> 00:08:22.079
Mark's stuck on Pirates of the Caribbean.
00:08:22.079 --> 00:08:24.079
He's like, you know, X marks the spot here.
00:08:24.079 --> 00:08:29.519
A treasure chest, maybe.
00:08:29.519 --> 00:08:32.960
Yeah with the goblet made of gold.
00:08:33.279 --> 00:08:33.919
Yeah.
00:08:33.919 --> 00:08:48.480
Um, so when but that's because you own it personally, you can be involved in that whole process of buying it, storing it, and looking at it at night and petting it, whatever you want to do with your gold.
00:08:48.480 --> 00:09:01.279
But when your IRA is buying it, you want to go through the right type of vendors that know you have an IRA and that can provide custodianship or holding it for you in this.
00:09:01.279 --> 00:09:03.360
And there's not a lot of options here.
00:09:03.360 --> 00:09:08.240
You want to make sure you do it right, but it's it's actually quite doable and not that expensive.
00:09:08.240 --> 00:09:10.240
Maybe Mat, walk us through an example of that.
00:09:10.559 --> 00:09:12.879
Yeah, there's a storage requirement for precious metals.
00:09:12.879 --> 00:09:24.879
So the tax code has a provision in it for IRAs that says when your IRA owns precious metals, they must be stored at a custodian that is a bank, trust company, credit union.
00:09:24.879 --> 00:09:25.279
Okay.
00:09:25.279 --> 00:09:30.159
So there must be a third-party storage place for those precious metals.
00:09:30.159 --> 00:09:34.720
And the IRS has come out pretty clearly and said you can't store these at your home.
00:09:34.720 --> 00:09:48.320
Like there's some guidance out from the IRS and kind of some buyer-beware kind of um taxpayer notices that have gone out from the IRS because they've cracked down on some people that have bought precious metals in their IRA and stored them at home.
00:09:48.320 --> 00:09:51.519
If you do that, the IRS deems that a distribution.
00:09:51.519 --> 00:09:58.559
They consider once those precious metals get to your house and they're in your personal possession, they deem that to be a distribution.
00:09:58.559 --> 00:10:01.120
So no storage at your home.
00:10:01.120 --> 00:10:04.320
So we use a third-party storage facility.
00:10:04.320 --> 00:10:06.320
Um, a lot of companies in the space use.
00:10:06.320 --> 00:10:07.519
You can even go in there.
00:10:08.000 --> 00:10:10.639
I thought we were storing all of this gold in the basement of our building.
00:10:10.639 --> 00:10:11.600
That's where you were going.
00:10:12.240 --> 00:10:13.440
No, no, definitely not.
00:10:13.440 --> 00:10:20.320
This this facility that stores it, literally, it knows for every employee, it knows if you have a filling in your tooth or not.
00:10:20.320 --> 00:10:28.720
And if you went to the dentist that day and you didn't update it, you will get scanned in and out when you go in and out of this building, and they'll be like, there's metal on you more than normal.
00:10:28.879 --> 00:10:29.200
Wow.
00:10:29.360 --> 00:10:34.799
Okay, like it is like is literally like a Fort Knox and lockdown, which is the type of place you probably want your metals.
00:10:34.799 --> 00:10:35.279
Okay.
00:10:35.279 --> 00:10:38.879
I don't want them in the treasure chest, you know, in the backyard.
00:10:38.879 --> 00:10:44.720
So, um, but this is that's a requirement for the precious metals owned in your IRA.
00:10:44.720 --> 00:10:49.679
They must be stored um according to the IRS requirements, which does not include your home.
00:10:49.679 --> 00:11:01.840
Now, you can have some personal possession of them during transportation if that was necessary, um, where your IRA bought them and you were somehow transporting them to be deposited properly.
00:11:01.840 --> 00:11:14.399
Generally, that's what you're just gonna have is you buy them from a precious metals dealer, they're gonna ship them to the depository that stores them, or that depository, frankly, many of them have a lot of the metals in the industry.
00:11:14.399 --> 00:11:20.879
They're already sitting on a shelf in there, they're just moving it to your name in your IRA as opposed to who just sold it to you.
00:11:21.120 --> 00:11:24.240
So what's what can people expect in a cost?
00:11:24.240 --> 00:11:28.639
Um, let's say they bought $10,000 worth of gold or uh $15,000.
00:11:28.639 --> 00:11:30.720
What would the storage cost be?
00:11:31.039 --> 00:11:35.039
So it could be $100 to $200 annual storage fee.
00:11:35.039 --> 00:11:41.360
Now we have uh, you know, a self-directed accountant directed IRA is $4.95 a year that you can invest in any asset.
00:11:41.360 --> 00:11:48.720
Now we do have a specific if you're just prying precious metals, there are some different different pricing on that uh where it could be less.
00:11:48.720 --> 00:11:53.759
Uh, but you're gonna have an annual storage fee to the facility of at least $100 a year.
00:11:53.759 --> 00:11:55.679
Uh so just plan on that.
00:11:55.679 --> 00:12:04.000
Um, so if you're buying the $10,000, just know you're gonna be paying at least $100 for that and maybe $300 to $500 a year for your IRA account fee with us.
00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:09.759
Now that's all consolidated into our account fees, and we handle that for you when you have a precious metals IRA with us.
00:12:09.759 --> 00:12:14.559
So um, and we, by the way, like I said, I'm referencing my own book here on some of these points.
00:12:14.559 --> 00:12:17.120
There's a whole chapter in my book on this.
00:12:17.120 --> 00:12:24.960
Um, we have other resources on our website about the qualifying metals and the rules, and we got a team here, of course, that can help you as you're sorting this out.
00:12:24.960 --> 00:12:31.200
And if you're interested in buying precious metals, like we talked about at the very beginning, this has been an asset that's performed very well.
00:12:31.200 --> 00:12:33.440
Who knows if it's going to continue to grow from here?
00:12:33.440 --> 00:12:38.240
We're not trying to give you investment advice, but we want to let you know this is an actual option in your IRA.
00:12:38.240 --> 00:12:42.080
Like the actual physical precious metals, you can own them in your IRA.
00:12:42.639 --> 00:12:48.720
Well, it's and it's uh a short podcast today or broadcast because it really is that simple.
00:12:48.720 --> 00:12:49.600
It's exciting.
00:12:49.600 --> 00:12:54.639
It's something you can do uh in just a few days, getting an account open.
00:12:54.639 --> 00:12:59.200
And we've got incredible uh resources there to help you do it quickly.
00:12:59.200 --> 00:13:11.120
Uh, an online uh app and on your uh desktop version, you can be opening an account tonight and started talking with uh precious metal metal dealers tomorrow.
00:13:11.120 --> 00:13:13.039
So it's it's pretty cool.
00:13:13.039 --> 00:13:28.960
Um, but anyway, thank you everyone for being here and being a part of this amazing mission and journey that Mat and I are on to kind of educate the world about this uh self-directed retirement account option that so many people don't know about.
00:13:28.960 --> 00:13:35.759

00:13:35.759 --> 00:13:39.759

00:13:39.759 --> 00:13:41.440

Give us a thumbs up, five star, 10, whatever's, you know, just 10 out of 10.
00:13:47.600 --> 00:13:48.480
